Day #15 Christchurch to Melbourne - The Mega New Zealand ExperienceA chance for an overseas Mega was too good to pass up. Especially with half the state seeming to be attending also. I set about some last minute planning. Flights still available Accommodation found Mode of transport securedLooks like its time to cross the ditch. Ive never visited the South Island before so it is bound to be a fun filled trip. And just like that Its almost over! Half a day left until I fly home. Just picking up some last finds before I finish this wonderful adventure.I started this one when I first arrived in NZ and finished it on my last day here. My initial search was fruitless until I checked a totally different location. Bingo - not easy to miss when you are in the right spot.A big thanks goes to 8ManAfter for taking the time to add The Mystery of Redfang (Canterbury) to the geocaching map for us all to find and enjoy.----------------------------------------------------------Wow! The fun just never stops.Have you logged your will attend for Victoria's first ever Block Party? (Think Mega but even more special!)Join us on 22-23 March 2025 in Sunbury to celebrate 25 years of geocaching by logging your will attend at [**GCAP417**](https://coord.info/GCAP417).
It seems Red has lost his way once again! Until we can get things back up and running, please message the CO with the decoded coords and the necessary PIN code, and you will be messaged back with the coords of the final.
2nd Find for today! Thanks 8ManAfter For this cache! Found on the 05/04/24@05:55:51 p.m..Very cool cache! Solving the puzzle on the cache page was quite easy! but when we came to the waypoint but saw nothing. Came today(05/04/24) and found it easily. Went to the final and found that after a bit of searching. TFTC - Signed Log#314Fav Point!!!! [^]
Visiting the CO, who we knew from his prior time in the US. On our last night in NZ, we felt we had to log an 8ManAfter find! He brought us to this one of his and gave us copious nudges... thanks for a great evening, 8ManAfter!
With a nudge to get me started, I uncovered the essentials. The second part was "different" !! Went with a friend for company, found what I needed and then a great cache! another learning curve with this one, so thanks alot. Very satisfying to get this one logged.
Solving part one of the puzzle went well, tried to find Redfang but had no luck. Heard about another thing that could be used, first time for us newbies ever trying that idea. Came again tonight and tried it, wow Redfang appeared and told us where to go. Well this is very exciting, lets try. Glad it is the holidays and very quiet. Made our way excitedly and found the cache, what a buzz. So happy to sign this log, another huge learning curve of new things for us. Thanks for this puzzle and the cache 8ManAfter, a well deserved fav from us.
Ahhhhh this cache... I had no issues decoding the hint, and then got a little stuck. I spoke to the CO at an event as well as Jude_E who confirmed I was on the right track. I came back another time and still had no joy. Then the other day it was mentioned on the facebook page. She pointed out something that I'd completely missed like a dumbass.. Even 'experienced' cachers can go awry.... Anyway today being a mystery dot day, I came down as there were no students around... Located the cache under some leaflitter, awesome puzzle that deserves the fav points, let me add another! TFTC , the cache was found in good order Signed, sealed and returned to GZ. 1 find(s) of 1 today, making this find #4565
This took a while. figured the first bit ok and got to the second stage but despite numerous attempts to get in touch with Redfangs friend couldnt get the final coords to work . Went to a geocache gathering last weekend and chatted to hinemoana who gave us some help . At last got the final tonight .. wow it was heavy and a fun final location .. phew got a smiley on this one TFTC
This is my third attempt at the final. The first time Sir Belac and I spent ages wandering around trying to get some final coordinates using the wrong tool. It was only when we got home that day I realized that the coordinates for that stage had been changed. Next time we went to the location we visited today but still couldnt get anything to come up. I was at an event in Palmerston North for International Geocaching Day and Redfang came up in the conversation so we asked for a hint. That explains why we couldnt find it. I'm back in Christchurch for a few days so wanted to find it so after Sir Belac got home from school we headed out for it. The tip we were given wasnt quite right so it still didnt work so I called Isis58 who was with me in Palmy and I knew she'd found it since then. The tool we were told was close but not quite the right one. Once we on the right track it was no problem. Thanks for a very cool cache 8ManAfter#14809
I was recommended this cache at an event in Palmerston North on International Geocaching Day in August. I'm in Christchurch to spend time with my brother as he is recovering from a serious bike accident while his wife is in China visiting their son who is also recovering from a serious bike accident. There has been limited time to find caches but I really wanted to see if I could nut this one out. Solved the first stage in preparation yesterday because I thought Sunday would be the best day to do stage 2. It was looking very unlikely I would get here but I needed to go on an errand late in the day and the sky had clouded over so I decided to come and see what I could see - or if I could see anything. Everything went like clockwork and I could read what I didn't need but a photo brought up the rest of the details - fantastic. Nice quick find at GZ too. What a great cache - so pleased to have had it pointed out and great to do something a bit out of the ordinary. Of course, another favourite coming your way! I also finally managed to drop off a TB that wanted to visit caches with high numbers of favourite points. TFTC # 20,925
After several years and multiple visits, sinking my teeth into it, and a good nudge I am pleased to report that I finally located the cache, and in a very good spot too! Thank you for a good challenge!! TFTC!!!
Great cache! Thanks 8ManAfter and Michael! I solved the first part a long time ago, but wasn't up for coming in the dark so just left it. A couple of weeks ago someone was talking to me about the cache and I became more keen to find it. After church last week I thought I'd come and have a look since I was nearby, even though I figured it would be too light. It wasn't too light! I could see the coordinates, just! I think the fact that the lights were off in the building was the only reason I could see them, I guess no one is working/studying there at 9am on a Sunday morning - fair enough! I headed over to the final location but discovered I hadn't brought my GPS, and my phone was jumping around all over the place. Not keen to search a such wide area with my phone refusing to settle I decided to come back next week with my GPS. Well that was today, and I was able to find it quickly, I was actually so near it last week, would have almost touched it when I had a little search before giving up. Thanks so much for this great cache, really appreciate all the effort that would have gone into it, it was a lot of fun!
I found Redfang last night in the dark
I solved the first part of the mystery a while ago.
Came to WP1 during the day recently but it was too light and a lot of muggles everywhere- I also wasn't sure what to do, though I had a pretty good idea (which was correct) so after confirming my thoughts with AngelicKiwi who had gathered the info from WP1 recently, I came back at night with my partner.
After finding the clever info we decided to take a stab at searching in the dark and after almost giving up I decided to try one last look at something that caught my attention and there it was- Redfang in all his glory!!!
Thanks for a wonderfully clever and well executed mystery- a very enjoyable cache and worthy of a fav point

This is a top notch, quality, sophisticated cache. CO, well done. Challenging without being convoluted. An absolute gem in the ? cache world.
I’ve been pulling threads at this one for about a month. Deciphering the code took a bit of work but the usual tools did the job. I’ve had the WP on my to-do list for a few weeks and tonight opportunity struck.
Ivss_xx, Kozjah, a new cacher, and I were in the area for a concert and decided to hit the WP. Before the show started, we made a dash to GZ. We spent a good 20 minutes shuffling around trying to find the cache with nothing to show. I hit the obvious thing a few times but decided that wasn’t it.
We went inside and enjoyed a great concert. Admittedly, I stepped out a few times to review logs and even message CO. After checking several different map overlays and reading years of logs, I was confident I knew where to look.
Concert over, the four of us went back to GZ. Seems to be a thing with this cache, second time go is the winner. With minimal heckling from passerby, we made a concerted effort to find it. I went back to the obvious thing and dug a little deeper. Proudly, I got to announce the find. Turns out I had found it earlier in the evening but dismissed it as a bit of rubbish. I came to understand what other finders have posted - this cache is solid and heavy! I lugged it to a suitable signing area and we got to do the traditional signing-and-yarning that’s exclusive to a cache that took a bit of effort. What a satisfying find.

I'd been looking at this one for a while. But I didn't know or didn't think of using a particular tool for the initial cipher. Now that seems like a very trivial step, quite easy to get the result quickly. The result came out with quite a few typos for some reason but still readable.
But really I got on to finally finding it because of OSC mentioning he was going to this gig tonight, and sparking my interest in getting a ticket to the said gig, and that leading us to mounting this cache search tonight, first an unsuccessful one before, and then a victorious one after the gig.
As for the Redfang stage of it, it was exactly what I was expecting, but still pretty cool to actually do it.
Then, what was left, was to find the container itself. And that was quite hard for us. We had mistakenly taken the advice about visibility at night and trying to apply it for the final cache. Nope, for that the darkness will definitely not help you. The terrain rating was deceiving us a wee bit as well. It might as well be 1.5 on a nice summery day. But now, in an autumn night, these slopes can be quite treacherous under the insane amount of wet and slippery leaves.
We got there in the end! Also got surprised about the cache weight. Probably one of the heaviest caches I have found!
Kia ora! Paldies!

The CO stepped in and told us what we were doing wrong... back this evening, we saw something we hadn't noticed before. Wow! Amazing! Off to the final, where Mr D suspected where Redfang was hiding, and had a look. Then Mrs D had a look. Then we went back and took a better look. Hooray! An interesting cache that has only taken us 7 years! And Redfang is heavier than we expected - obviously eating well and enjoying his restful surroundings?
Had completed various components ages ago and run out of time. Finished it off today.
Sadly, doesn't look like we can help find Redfang... many years ago, one evening during the Chch Mega, we were near here searching and surprised a mad scientist. That was our first DNF. Apparently the mad scientist arranged for Redfang to be woken up, so the people searching later in the evening got some good news, but we haven't been back until now. (The mad scientist has now got her PhD, also a job, a husband and a bonny son.)
Rolling 3 DNFs into one... Xmas day we forgot the GPS and no-one phoned us. Boxing Day the GPS said it wouldn't listen until Garmin Connect was loaded. Today, the GPS still didn't connect and although the phone said it was listening, nothing happened. So, sorry Redfang - just call us Winegum?

Well, I'd looked briefly at this cache page many years ago when I hadn't been geocaching very long but didn't know where to start. After a bit more experience I had another look lately and was able to figure out the first waypoint coordinates. It took a bit more thought and head scratching before I had the aha moment and then I knew what would be required at the waypoint. With the sun setting late these days, I didn't really want to be out and about on my own after dark so called on assistance from Flowerydaze and Talla64 who were coming down to Christchurch for Christmas and keen to solve and find this one as well.
We found the waypoint and were then thrilled when we managed to get the final coordinates - very cool! Then off to the final location but found searching hard going in the dark. We spent quite a long time before reluctantly deciding we'd have to come back in daylight. But one more quick look and yes, just spotted it!
This is a really awesome cache from start to finish, I really enjoyed it and well deserving of a favourite point. TFTC 8ManAfter and Michael!

Wow, what a cache! Talla64 and I are visiting family in Christchurch and prior to our visit TipsyTui suggested we should go for this one. After reading the cache page I was very keen. The puzzle didn't take too long, and armed with the right sort of equipment and paper and pencil we set off with TipsyTui driving. It was quiet and dark when we arrived, I did wonder if a security guard would appear at any moment, but none did. Talla quickly spotted something suspicious and the fun began. Notes were made and we were off to GZ, me keen to try out my new powerful torch that I got from Santa's sack at rattll's Christmas barbecue.
I was surprised how many people passed by while we were searching quietly in the dark, and it was a long search. When we were just about to give up TipsyTui had one last go and uttered the magic words "here it is." Log signed, cache carefully replaced, then back home.
Thank you very much for a great cache and fun adventure 8ManAfter and Michael. Definitely worthy of a FP.

On a trip to Christchurch for a family Christmas and with Flowerydaze and Tipsytui we set off with the solved puzzle coords not realizing we were only part way there to the complete solution. A bit tricky getting the next part but we got the final coords and set off with torches in hand. After what seemed an age we were about to give up and come back in the daylight when Tipsytui uttered the well known phrase, here it is. Phew what a relief. Thanks for the cache 8ManAfter and Michael.FP from me for this one.
I looked for this cache in January 2021 with another cacher from Wellington. Although we managed to solve part of the puzzle, we could not do the last bit.
This cache was on my list for this trip. I took GraciesGPSFun back to where we got stuck and with a little bit of help from a paf, we found Gracie’s tool worked and we soon had the coordinates - my one was no good -don’t know why. We went hunting for the cache in the dark but could not find it. We came back today with a bit more information and just like that, it was found. Phew..
A great puzzle cache, thoroughly enjoyable and so a favourite is given with great pleasure.
In Canterbury for a 25th wedding anniversary and am caching with GraciesGPSfun as well. Today is our last day caching as we both head north this afternoon.
Kia ora rawa atu for the cache 8ManAfter.

We first looked at this years ago when new to geocaching with no knowledge of online resources for decoding ciphers. We made no progress then and forgot about it. Now looking for a way to fill dot days, we returned to the puzzle with years of experience. A quick decode! Reading the message, the clues and logs it then took only a few minutes of thought to realise what was required at the waypoint. But after a year since the last log, would it still work? Visiting just after sunset (a week ago before daylight saving started) the code was entered, and yes! Brilliant!
We did leave the visit to GZ for a dot day and returned in daylight hours. There were lots of muggles on bikes and scooters zipping past too fast to notice, but we still had to time searching carefully between gaps in the slower moving pedestrians. It did take quite a bit of a search with huge mounds of dead leaves surrounding the most likely hide object. We searched a few unlikely places too before returning to the likely object, brushing leaves aside and reaching into the correct nook to uncover the treasure. All in order! Another well deserved favourite. TFTC 8ManAfter & KiwiLegend!

I've been doing a few more caches in Christchurch, and having this sitting at the top of my unfound list at this side of town has tended to get in the way. It always felt a bit wrong to log a find here, as I put this incarnation out, but it has been sufficiently long that it also wasn't actually that easy to find. A few false positive clunks from tossed away cans, before actually finding the hide itself. I check the waypoint occasionally as well, and it was still OK a few weeks ago. Waiting for the next real finder...
STAY HOME, STAY SAFE, STAY SMART!
DISABLING FOR NOW. ANY LOGS POSTED FROM NOW UNTIL THE CACHE IS ENABLED WILL BE DELETED.

WOW WOW What an experience! That's really, really, a unique mission. From the decoding, to finding the first WP, to the GZ, to the find, every step, every clue, are so delicate and cleverly designed! I really enjoyed it. Decoded the message about a week ago, but got stuck on WP1, then talked with CO for a little hint, and all of a sudden it was all clear. Went to WP1 in a dark night, got the message, went to final location with my partner, she watched my six for muggles when I searched for Redfang. After a few search and OMG! Hello Redfang, you seem all fine my friend. That's one good home.
TFTC, Thanks for this one unique mission, 8ManAfter! Mucho gracias

Wow, wow, wow. You set the bar very high, 8ManAfter. A very clever cache. I had no difficulty with solving the code and finding wp1 but then couldn't work out the next step. Rincewind3 had a aha moment he kindly shared with me and back I came. Nothing doing. At this pointed I messaged the CO who kindly got the wp checked and so three days later armed with 2 kin of Redfang I found what I was looking for. Set off for the final thinking this will be a cinch. Hmm not so much in the dark. A quick read of the logs and I thought I knew what I was looking for so I widened the search in the dark and voilà! Awesome cache and hide. Will give a favourite. #3387
We had a look on the gc page for Mystery caches with a lot favourites. This one seemed interesting and after a few minutes I found the right tool. We decrypt all of it (it took ages...) and read a few logs and tried to understand the next step. Aha! We went to the wp and found the expected thing. We used it but what then happened we didn't expect. Wow! Nice work! We love it.
The final location was not too hard.
Thanks for showing! Tftc

Great puzzle. Really really enjoyed it. Many thanks Rob. Sets a very high standard of pleasure. Though my friend proved a little unresponsive at the critical moment. Fortunately a friends friend came to the rescue.
We still need your help to find Redfang. Everything is in place to help you help us.
This is one of those caches that I had had a brief look at ages ago and put in the "too hard basket". I decided to revisit it and after a bit of research I realised that I too have a loyal pal like Redfang who I am very attached to. After that, everything fell into place very quickly, the code was solved and I knew what I would have to do with the information given.
I went with my teenage son to the first co ordinates as I thought he would be a good decoy and reason for hanging around such a place after dark. I managed to get everything working and was so happy when the final co ordinates revealed themselves. We headed around to try and find the cache but it was dark so we didn't have any luck.
I went back in daylight hours today with Mr B and the cache was quickly spotted. Boy is that thing heavy!!
Thanks for such a great adventure and we will definitely give this one a favourite!

What a clever cache! Took two visits to the first stage over the course of a day to get what we needed. Abandoned our first attempt for the final thinking it a hopeless case in the dark and headed off for an attempt on a nearby cache. Decided to head back past GZ on the way back to the car for a final attempt. A-ha - that's it! Many thanks to my better more intelligent half for solving the first part of the puzzle.
GZ for the final is currently difficult (but not impossible) to get to. Add at least a star and a half of terrain...
So after a number of false starts, ending up with a conversation with the CO, Then revisiting the cache page again, we hooked in and managed to get part (a) of this 2 part mystery, I was with my son and we were well impressed with the engunity of the 1st part, well worth the headacha.
We tried to hunt for the 2nd but with fog rolling in and temp dropping, elected to have a nudge during the day following. Arriving here this afternoon there was no muggle activity so managed to have a good dig around amd came up with the treasure. What a great adventure. Thank you for bringing me to this place and placing this cache 8ManAfter (and Michael) from Mr Cuddly Brick , cache 1351 on this mighty day the 23 July 2016 Favorite point from me. filmed with the permission of the CO to publish on Mr Cuddly Bricks You Tube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCspYYJI5ZIvUE9ncq1_rpYw

I looked at this one ages ago, thought about it, decided I had no clue, thought again, had an idea, found I was wrong, gave up. Tonight I got a nudge from a previous finder. It turns out my thought was on the right track, I just didn't execute it properly. I still can't believe how simple it really is! Anyway, I soon had a wee story and some good looking coords so I just needed to wait to finish work and I could go look in the dark for final coords.
Arrived at the WPT, and sent out a signal to Redfang (do you know, I've only just got that now - stupid!) Nothing. Hmm, wander around a bit, try Redfang again, heyup there's a set of numbers. So cool!
Off to the final where I found that satellite mode on my phone app was no help, until I got closer to the correct spot. Then I could see what I needed. Anyway, I can't tell too much of my hunt for the final dure to spoiler elements. I will say that at one point I had to hunker down behind some cover, turn off my torch, and hold my breath, while 4 inebriated young men walked noisily past! Not spotted so soon had the log signed and collected the two TBs to move along.
TFTC, it was fun, and worthy of a favourite point

No need for maintenance, as everything is in place! As noted, the cache page changed, so please use the most recent version if you solved the Mystery of Redfang a while ago.
This time made it to the gz. Unfortunately unable to attain then final cords....stink az
I think I know what happened. You've either copied the information off someone else, or haven't downloaded the information since over a year and a half ago. You need to re-solve the puzzle.
After a long long time trying to figure this out , I with a little help headed to where I thought you needed to start. Tried a scan with no success. Resorted to PAF and resulted in a walk to another area but was hindered by construction fences so was able to get close enough. Still the puzzle guru on the phone and plotting my location to Google we were directed left 10m scan. GPS bouncing didn't help. Elected to stand down for now and return maybe when the construction fences are down and give it ago again. Looking forward to trying to get this one sorted
Perfect start in the morning.
Well, actually it started yesterday.
Together with the original CO I went to stage1 but something was missing
Today I had everything with me and was able to get the final coordinates out of the fangs of red
Very good puzzle, stage and final.
For sure one of my favourites.
Thank you very much for this nice cache.
Dropped some TB that want to stay in New Zealand.

Heard about redfang's mysterious disappearance some years ago and solved the first part of the puzzle. The Mega was the opportunity to track down the next step... after solving the puzzle again to get the current coords!
We were in the area, so after our first failed webcam attempt mid-morning we called into see if we could meet redfang. We all looked as happy as possible, flashing our dentures to attract all the attention we could as we walked towards GZ. But no bites, not even the faintest nibble.
Hmm.. a window. Looks like a lab. Promising, redfang sounds like a technical type. Peer in, nose to glass. Aarghh, someone's peering back! White lab coat, probably a mad scientist! Suddenly a door opened and the mad scientist type emerged and greeted us by name... It was GSVNoFixedAbode's #1 offspring, working on her PhD on Labour Day Sunday. So she was well aware that we were the sad dregs of society and was very kind and understanding. But, she didn't know anything about redfang...
So we left again, chewing on rusks to sooth our sore gums. But we see that other search parties have succeeded where we failed. Maybe our gnashers weren't tempting enough??

We were on a mega night cache journey and the team had the solve for the puzzle. So of we went. Got the co-ords when we saw a glint. Off to the final. Nice to see a good sized cache.
After the prize.ceremony at the MEGA, it was finally time to do some night caches. Thursday evening, after arriving in ChCh I was too tired, friday, also too tired and pre-occypied with getting the cache-o-cachres. Saturday evening I had car-trouble (had to replace the car at the rental the next morning) - so .. now was the time!
We were 4 in the car: Riser5, Tikkitour, Tikki Tour and me.
This one was recommended to me as I checked in at the MEGA friday afternoon. I quickly sat down to solve it, and not having the right tool, it took a little while, but soon I had everything needed.. now it was just a matter of time to get time to go there..
Sunday night was the night and with Riser5, Tikkitour & Tikki Tour, we went out specificaly for nightcaches.
After navigating the city, we found the coordinates from the puzzle and I activated my special device.. and voila! There were the coordinates, as clear as day!
Back to the car and then it was matter of finding our way to the final coordinates,, park,, walk a little - and there it was! Definetely worthy of a FP from me
Found at 10:02 PM - #5528

Stopped by today to check on my old friend. He has been VERY well taken care of, and is ready for some more finders.
Red's friend has found a new home, and he is now ready to help. If you have decoded the location of the helper before, you need to do it again. Hopefully he will stay here for a while. Happy Hunting!
D'OH! Just received word that Red has gone missing, but should be back real soon!
Red has decided to move to new digs. Shouldn't be long before he's back in action! Sorry for the trouble.
Fantastic cache! I initially dismissed the puzzle not sure what to make of it but as some friends were talking about it I had a look at it again and immediately tweaked at what I needed to do. Being armed with dessert and not fruit I had no problems finding the final coordinates from the first waypoint. Was a little surprised at the container at GZ given the location; hopefully it will last!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Had a wee hint on the solving of this one, but did all the required stuff and was not disappointed at the GZ.....awesome. Cheers for this one being back in action.
Yay CatMad strikes again! I had intended waiting until I could meet up with some geocaching buddies but muggle daughter was wanting to go out and I had this solved so the temptation was too much. I had solved the puzzle last year and turned up to do the next part but something was wrong. Cache was shortly after disabled and has been on my watchlist ever since. Now was the opportune time. With Hannah holding the torch and me navigating we soon reached the woo hoo moment!!!! That was fun!!! Then it was off to solve the final mystery. This had us to-ing and fro-ing a bit until in the end I trusted my geocaching instincts, or perhaps I was thinking like Red would have. The log book was soon in hand but it did take some effort I must say! Could have done with muggle hubby's big strong hands. Thanks for all the effort involved in putting this awesome cache together!
Finally - SUCCESS.
This was the first puzzle cache I tried to find - and while I solved the first part of the puzzle quite quickly, somehow the rest of the puzzle eluded me. But dogged determination has won out. My first attempt was scuppered by juggles, my second because my 'friend' was not the right sort, but I didn't know it at the time. Somehow various things got in the way of my finishing the puzzle - the wrong idea, the wrong friend, quakes, being too busy, being shifted, changing jobs, repairs, security guards, DNF's, ...
Then the cache went offline, again, and I hoped I hadn't missed my chance to beat it.
But a recent note from 8ManAfter and I was back on the case and determined.
Yorkshire P, RogoBaby, purdiepurdie and I made the move on a chilly but clear night. Luckily RogoBaby had the right 'friend' since the rest of us did not. We moved on to the next stage, narrowly avoiding the scrutiny of muggles by claiming to be looking for eels!
And, success - what a great cache and well worth the prolonged journey, thanks.

Woo hoo! There has been much work on resurrecting Red's clue, and it is now back in place. A recent check of his "kennel", however, found that his hiding place had been ruthlessly removed by a fast-moving toothed beast! Man, Red's surroundings sure are dangerous! At any rate, persistence has hopefully paid off again, and Red would be happy to have some visitors again. Many thanks to KiwiLegend for ably putting things back in a more-than-findable manner! Game on!
Good progress on getting this one back online. I'm hoping in the next two weeks or so. Sorry for the delay!!
I think I am onto Redfangs tail/trail. Looking forward to this being ready to go again. Cheers
Construction work has chased Redfang away, but only temporarily. I had a whistle that will help call him back once things are sorted. Don't lose hope!
Sorry - yes, there has been some maintenance. I was hoping it wouldn't have any effect, but it has, and there is something wrong. Hopefully will get sorted in the next couple of days.
So my RedFang curse strikes again. Got the new message decoded easily enough - the time spent writing a spreadsheet to decode the first one was well spent. The new location seemed reasonable given the previous failed attempt. purdiepurdie offered to help us out so Yorkshire P, RogoBaby and I approached the way-point. We came brought along multiple 'friends' just-in-case. We listened hard but - zip - nothing - nada - again! There also seems to be some renovations going on which could have put this one temporarily out of action again? Either that or I need to ensure I take the right 'friend' with me, one that can listen properly - apparently you can't get good 'friends' these days.

Yaaaaay!!! Milestone!!! Milestone!!! Number 3000!!!
So as I started approaching my milestone, I started thinking about what I wanted to make my number 3000. I had heard good things about this cache, and I had also heard that it had recently been re-enabled!! So I asked 2wombles if they wanted to come along as part of the celebrations! Ended up finding a day that suited the both of us, and off we went!!
Arrived to find 2wombles already onto it! Which was a good thing... because between the 4 of us, there was only one redfang that was the correct type!! (Which I totally don't understand how! )
But either way, we then got the coords sussed out pretty quick smart, and then we started figuring out how to try and get there...
There was a building... and this building was locked... but this building had a gap underneath that one could crawl through... so that is what we did!! That was pretty adventurous and fun!!
And then we arrived at the coords. And while I was still faffing around, KommandantHVS got his hands on the cache!! Yaay!! He then felt bad for not letting me find it... but meh! I don't mind! Number 3000 done! BOOYAAAH!! And yup, a fave for the ingeniousness of it all!!
And consecutive caching day # 291 also!!! Yaaay!! Epic!! Great!!!
On the way back we took the detour rather than climbing under the building again... haha.

Nutted out the solution to the puzzle, and visited this evening with Sonia26642 as she wanted a special cache as her 3000th find. Sonia26642 and I didnt' have the right equipment with us, but Mrs 2wombles came through, and got us the final co-ordinates. A short walk later, including crawling under a building (as you do) we got the the GZ, and KommandantHVS made the find. Congrats on your 3000th find Sonia26642. Thanks for the cache 8ManAfter.
If you already decoded Red's message prior to him moving to his new home, you'll need to do it again with the new encoded message on the page. Sorry for the trouble.
I'm happy to report that Red has found a nice, cozy place to live, hopefully for a long while! Should be good to find now.
Just a note to say we are still working to find a good place for Red. I hope to have a new home very soon. So sorry for the delay!!
This has to one of the cleverest caches I have come across in my limited time caching. The code was quickly deciphered and my first instinct proved false. Had another think and thought I had it and returned no luck, resorted to asking for a hint from CO was on the right track but the had a grapefruit which wasn't working. Negotiated to meet a fellow cacher who was caretaker who helped me see the light. Thanks 8Man for your most excellent cache and your perserverance. Thanks also Looking4theBrock for maintaining an awesome cache and for assisting me with the grapefruit. A definate favourite.
Red's home is being occupied by another resident, and so he is looking for a new place to live. We'll have this one back soon, I hope. He doesn't like living in limbo...
Omg. The most excellentest cache ever. This took me so long to find but the feeling I have after finding this cache is extreme elation! 11 out of 10! I wish I could do this one again.
Had puzzle solved some time ago, second visit an still no luck. Arrived at dusk armed with several tools that I thought might be the key without success.
I solved the puzzle but I don't know anything about the tool needed. Can anyone help me? I am very new to all this. Thanks.
Looked really strange hunting around. Gps never zeroed and finally a student muggle questioned me so I gave up and left.
After trying to get 4 of redfang's friends to help me hear him he finally made his whereabouts known. When we got to him, the poor wee chap was a bit damp. He must have had the nervous sweats. So happy that we could finally meet him. We wish we could give more than one favourite point for this one. TFTC TNLNSL
We waited until dark before heading off on what was going to turn into my fourth failed attempt at this one. The first three I was under prepared (and very green) but this time should have been different.
My first attempt I'd solved the first part of the puzzle and had a location but didn't know what to look for.
The second attempt was muggled - a group photo at what I expected was GZ!
The third attempt saw me better prepared, but the light wasn't ideal and I hadn't yet understood the mystery of Redfang.
This attempt, I was sure the stars were aligned. I even had purdiepurdie, RogoBaby and Yorkshire P to help. But we searched in vain. The expected eureka moment failed to occur. Our faithful companion did not enlighten us. Still, we plan to return.

Decided to go down to Dunedin to attended the first ever Mega in New Zealand and my first ever MEGA. Managed to work it out so that I was able to team up with -gonefishing-, fozzmiester and agcnz on an 9 day caching trip around the South Island, this was day 8 of the road trip. Today we were making our way form Timaru to Christchurch for the night and picking up a few caches on our way and it was another beautiful fine day.
After finding GC3F7YV - Kahurangi Camouflage (Canterbury), this was the next cache and final cache for the for the evening. Having solved this puzzle cache way back and messed it up in February, I made sure that I would come back and complete the task and complete the previously failed mission
This time I had extra help and we managed to work our way though it without any issues with a previous finder looking over our shoulders making sure that we didnt make any silly mistakes. In the end it worked out well and we completed the mission successfully
Managed to retrieve the cache, signed and then replaced the cache back where we found it. Thanks 8ManAfter for placing this cache here and for bringing us to this spot, TFTC TNLNSL (5373). Thanks so much for keeping this cache active, a very enjoyable cache and a great cache to finish the day caching with, giving it a favourite point.
Now it is time to make our way to our accommodation in Christchurch for the evening and have some well earned dinner.....

Found as part of an epic NZ Mega Event trip. Day 8 - Timaru to Christchurch in the company of agcnz, -gonefishing- and Yeetrees. Thanks to the owners of the 500 + caches which I had the pleasure to find along the way and which contributed to a very fun trip.
A quick find this evening to finish off the day's efforts. Thanks for the cache and for the great puzzle which I was very happy to get to the end of.

Found on the great post-Mega roadtrip with agcnz, fozzmiester and yeetrees. A great trip from Otago to Wellington, taking in many backroads and some fantastic scenery along to way to over 400 caches. Thanks to all the cache owners for the great caches we found on the way.
A very cleverly constructed challenge with this one. It was most enjoyable to get the chance to find this while passing through Chch on the way home.
Thanks for the cache, 8ManAfter.

#4291. This mystery turned into a bit of a saga! Our first recce was in April, with La Vista x 2, when redfang was in his original lair. It was a daytime visit, so we made little progress. Then in June (at the new lair) we were there at night, but weren't sure what we were looking for. In July I had a free evening, and knew what to do, but redfang didn't come out to play. Next chance was October, en route to the mega, so I checked with looking4thebroc a few days before to make sure redfang was in rude good health. I paid a visit one night while I was staying in Chch (usually we are out in Rangiora) and soon had coords. Just over a week later, en route back from the MEGA, we finally put our names in the log book. TFTC.
This was high on our list of "must-do" caches after failing previously. StreetWalker visited at night last week to complete the first stage so we finally had co-ords for the final.
Spookily we were at the same local restaurant with the same co-diners when we decided to pop out to look for this cache - almost a re-enactment of our June visit. The difference was that we had final co-ords and we found the cache. Nice easy find at the final.
Thanks for the entertainment.

Was in the area and this was one I wanted to tick off, but like others no luck? Is anyone able to check it is OK?
Was very close to the cache when the previous log came in and so was able to check on the first stage of the cache. All is in order with the first stage. However, it would be almost impossible to spot the first stage during the day and especially before noon due to the way that the sun shines around the cache. The first part of the stage of the cache is best attempted in the dark.
Had a couple of hours before flying back to WLG, so decided to have another go at Redfang. I lurked for quite some time, making little progress. Eventually looking4thebroc happened along (he seems to be keeping an eye on redfang now) but he couldn't get anything to happen either. Maybe there is a technical issue. Hopefully all will be back in working order next time we are at GZ (in the dark). Troodles would have been a bit annoyed if I had found it, as she solved the puzzle.
Noticed that the puzzle had changed a few days before we flew down to Christchurch for the weekend so was prepared with the new instructions. We were having dinner at a nearby restaurant so popped out to hunt this cache down while the slowest eater at our table was still chowing down. Not a good idea to do this under time pressure and after a few unsuccessful attempts to communicate, we had to admit defeat and return to rejoin our dinner group.
We will return!!
We will return!!
Had decoded the original message and was all set to grab it on the way home when the alert came through that it was disabled. Hoped it wasn't permanent. Phew, it wasn't as it was live again about 30min later - but I needed to decode again.
Did that today, then kiwicampnut arrived on doorstep this evening to collect her trackables. These night ones are always best with a friend so off we went. Found red's friend easy enough, and he was willing enough to share with us - but we were distracted when he sent his message. Second time we got it, then off to the final.
Bingo! Smiley!
Thanks for the cache - really must learn more about Red's friend.
Happy travels 8MA - pleased I got this one before you left town.

After visiting mother in hospital, went and retrieved a couple of tb's from RuruNZ who decided we should go out for a few caches as I was feeling down having received a ticket while at the hospital. I hadn't realised that the co-ords I had for this had been changed but RuruNZ had worked out the new ones. While we both looked a bit stumped with what we had to do, a quick observation in one of those moments and we quickly had the final location, and onward for a smiley.
Thanks for making my brain work in a way it hasn't before - safe travels and we will miss you here in Canterbury. Kiwicampnut

Redfang is trying to find a new home. Hopefully he will be up and running again real soon!
All set. If you've already decoded Red's message, you'll need to do so again to continue your search. Please help!
