Find #990

Eltham is not a spot that I have been to before but I had an errand to run there today (in fact my final destination was just near this cache on Frank St) so I put the bike on the train, avoided the big city crowd at the footy and headed out that way. I was approaching this one from the sister cache to the south nearby but it still needed another serious ride up a steep hill on the wide HV pylon reserve. I looked for this one for quite a while changing my mind about where I thought it would be and looking here and there. Eventually my brain caught up with my eyes and the tricky fellow was in hand. Log just about full but I squeezed my name in on the end. Thanks for the cache R36. It earns a favourite point from me and I can't believe it's been almost a year since it was last found.

Out with Funsize Manor for a day of caching. At this our 6th cache for the day we searched and searched but couldn't find the little treasure. Nevertheless we pushed on to the one down and up the track. I had previously found this other similarly named cache and Funsize Manor was also able to find and log it. It was the walk back up the track to the car that nearly did us in. Need to come back with even keener geo-eyes and clues to crack the DNF one. Thanks anyway. We got some serious exercise!!!

Found after competing in an orienteering event just down the road this afternoon.
After just about having a coronary power walking for an hour through the surrounding streets one of my fellow orienteers who has just been conscripted into the world of geocaching questioned me about a cache that he couldn't find just down the road. I suggested we go and have a look as I had not found it previously and so off we went (ahhh, more walking Sad). Arriving at the GZ I called got it after a quick search but allowed rmdhudson to continue with some prompts along the way and he also had a Big Grin shortly there after.
Now I just need to work on his log writing techniquesWink
Thanks for the cache R36

Found today- not my first visit and I did need help. Thanks R36.

04-Apr-14
kmace and I parked our cars in a street that was between this cache and the other similarly titled cache. We had a very pleasant stroll to GZ and searched several places for quite a while. We were thinking of giving up when kmace expanded the search and found the cleverly camo'd cache, which had an MO that we have seen a few times recently.

We didn't find the log removal tool mentioned in the cache description but luckily I always carry one so we carefully removed the log and signed it at 4:55 pm. TNLN. We then rolled the log up a bit tighter and smaller so it would be easier for future finders.

Thanks R36 for the tricky hide and for bringing us to such an interesting location. [^]

Found this one today with Ladioactive. We worked out how to approach this cache and took an easy stroll to the cache location and then searched for a while - we initially looked in the wrong place, then changed to another wrong place. I expanded the search a bit and the tricky cache was found. Signed log after having difficulty in getting it out (we couldn't find the retrieval tool) and then we rolled the log so that it was a bit easier to find.

Thanks for the cache R36.

I'm claiming a second find on this as GZ has changed and so had hide. Found with Rebel Acts.

23-Dec-13
3rd time lucky , couldn't find the log removal tool, so I found an old peg and used the wire from that TFTC Smile

17-Dec-13
Found with Spiffy- on a mini cache run. The owners kindly came over and introduced themselves. Nice to meet more cachers. TFTC

17-Dec-13
It was yet another beautiful weather night tonight so headed out with my caching buddy to find a few caches after dinner until dark. It was a pretty successful night.
We parked in between these to "Eltham needs more...." caches and arriving at this one we meet the owners. Nice to meet some fellow caches out and about. Since they were now watching they gave us one large hint that I won't pass on. (I now I'm mean).
After a couple of minutes I found the tool so knew I was close and then seconds later my buddy found the cache. Glad we found the tool as well which made removing the log much easier.
Thanks R36 for the cache, the hunt and the fun.

15-Dec-13
Found this late at night after foraging around in the dark with torches, R36 himself came out to assist and after a little hint we found it. Great cache R36 . ty

10-Dec-13
Since I am new to the Cache finding, i did not find this, went to #2 and found that one quickly, with a better idea of what i could be looking for I then came back and tried again with no luck. it was getting dark so I will have to return during the day when I can set a fresh mind and get some fresh eyes on the prize.

27-Nov-13
Great day for a caching walk. Stopped to talk to the horse in the paddock. In reaching GZ and reading the description knew where roughly i should start my hunt and yes there it was. Now how to retrieve that little log....barb wire perfect size for little rolled bits of paper!!!!! TFTC

07-Nov-13
Finally!! Had a pen this time. Clever hide, thanks

07-Sep-13
Made this one our first find today on our way to the event in Doncaster. Had to let a few muggles walking dogs pass on by before having a good crack at it. The young geo kids ended up talking to a lovely lady walking her dogs while Mrs Happy pants managed a quick find. I had some trouble removing the log and spent even more time looking for an extraction tool, made the mad dash back down to the vehicle and removed and signed the log in the front seat of my geo ute. Headed back up to the gz and replaced the cache, certainly made this one more difficult than it needed to be, thanks for the cache R36. A sneaky hide indeed.

07-Sep-13
This one eluded me last time, just before it was disabled. This time it took me about ten minutes - had to think a little bit laterally to get it, but seeing the "log extraction tool" helped narrow it down a little bit. Cheers R36!

03-Sep-13
Wandered up the steps and then wandered along the fenceline, and then wondered where it could be.
It was only after a second sweep that I noticed this little blighter.
Thanks again R36

25-Aug-13
We came back today with a more reliable GPS but were still a bit out. After looking around for quite a while, we rechecked some areas I was sure I'd checked last time we were here - and there it was. A good hide - I think I just looked straight past it last time. SL, pleased to make this find in the end. TFTC.

24-Aug-13
Found after a brief search, Clever hide. TFTC

22-Aug-13
Hmmm, found this years ago but forgot to log. Visiting R36 and looking at my local finds there was no smiley there for me..

19-Aug-13
Didn't find this one today but we probably did give up sooner than we should have due to the cold and a GPS that seemed to be confused. We will return another day.

13-Aug-13
We were in the area today and took the opportunity to add a few smileys to our count. This was the second find of four. Took us a while to find, but we got there. Thanks for bringing us here!

06-Aug-13
Great hide and location.
Had a go at this quite a while ago when still new to caching,
So now with a bit more experience, had to come back and
get it. TFTC

04-Aug-13
Just to confirm, cache is definitely there!

01-Aug-13
Found it, it was there all the time! I just wasn't looking in the right place.
A few thoughts to come out of this:
- Don't automatically assume just because you can't find a cache that it has been muggled.
- Trust your GPS. Mine were both (I was using and comparing a Magellan Explorist 310 with a Magellan Explorist 510) consistently indicating a position a metre and a half from where I was looking. But I was convinced that the cache would be in another position.
- Maintain an open mind as to what and where the cache 'must' be. As I indicated I was convinced that it would be in a particular place and associated with a particular and unusual feature at the site. I think there was a bit of 'well that's where I would have put it' coming int play!

Thanks for the cache. It was worth the time I have spent looking for it. TonyGold

30-Jul-13
A couple of 'Did not finds' and I am confident that I was looking in the right place that was supported by the hint and other finders comments. Have we been muggled?

30-Jul-13
I Was talking to the property owner last night and he said it was still there, I Will check up on the cache tomorrow evening after work and post another note regarding it.

28-Jul-13
Spent a long time searching for this one with no luck.
Might try again some other time.

26-Jul-13
Although I had previously found this cache near my home I saw that it had had been reinstalled in a different location and was a little more difficult. So I thought I would give it a whirl and find it again. It sure was more difficult and try as I might I couldn't find it. Oh the ignominy!

25-Jul-13
Approaching this area with the young son on my shoulders I thought "Uh Oh...., EXPOSURE!" but as it turned out we spotted only a couple of people while I searched. The son amused himself by falling over, numerous times while I puzzled over GZ.
It was while I was getting ready to leave that I thought "I wonder if..." and bingo. I knew what I was looking at straight away. Then I located the handy log removal tool and quickly had my signature down.
I don't know how hard the last hide was but this one is sure to frustrate a few people.

Cheers R36, thanks for the challenge and another cache that helps me towards meeting the requirements for the Spread the Love Challenge.

This cache was checked after the pruning was carried out and the cache was not in its spot, it was actually found by geodaughter on the ground, It was put back in the correct position, but has now disappeared, will disable it until i can get a new container in there.

Being aware this hasn't been found for awhile we came to GZ to see a lot of trees had been pruned can you please check to see if cache Is still intact.

Errghmahgawd... another DNF today. Sad

I'll be back

20-Nov-12
Took a bit longer to find that it should have. After doing the "Eltham Needs More Caches #2" first we wrongly assumed we were looking for something similar. As the light faded, a spark of inspiration overcame me and then 'boom'....found it..........done these type of caches before so was kicking myself that I didn't go with that first.

05-Nov-12
Nemesis found! After three (unrecorded) DNF's Red Face and with a better idea of the sort of things to look for (courtesy of finding other Micro's) Smile, I finally found this one today Big Grin. Thanks R36 for a challenging cache...

04-Nov-12
Great spot. Found this one when about to give up. Very small. Didn't have a pen, sorry about that. Coordinates in c:geo were wrong so glad I got the proper ones from the internet first.

26-Sep-12
Had me wandering around, until I re-read the logs and then it all made sense. Thanks R36

With a clear understanding that R36 has raised the bar high from a recent find we now tackled this task.
With no neighbours to discourage the bananas an attempt at every conceivable movable object was attempted. The reward was the treasure that we seeked. Again B2 resolved the issue.
At least this was obvious that it did not belong but beautifully hidden in the most unlikely of positions.
Thanks R36 for the assault on our time management theories as again the Steve Hooker would also have difficulties topping the high standards you have set. The treasure again is in perfect condition and looks well loved.

Another huge and awesome TDC (The Demolition Crew) run consisting of myself, Quasar3671 and TrailRunning. Starting in the afternoon, heading into the evening, night and early morning hours, we cached until we almost dropped, finding around 70 for the run. A huge effort. The run took us from the Eastern Suburbs, winding our way slowly out of Melbourne then up to Sunbury and finally back through Melbourne.

The weather was fine, with no rain to be seen. A big mixed bag of caches with at least 10 mysteries, several multis, a few night caches, a few tree climbs, and a few nice walks thrown in as well. Marty got stung by stinging nettles, we had a huge Maccas feed during the night and we even stopped at a local Sunbury pub for a pot of beer, the run was going so well time wise. A top night caching down south for me.

Took a little while to locate, but we got the tricky bugger in the end. Between the three of us, we forgot a single pen. So, we have photographic proof of the find, if need be. Next time I go back past that way, I can stop in and sign if you like. I won't post the image of proof on the cache page, don't want to give it away. Let me know if you need it though. TFTC.

An exceptionally huge and successful winters afternoon, evening and night of caching by The Demolition Crew (myself, Blacklegend and Trailrunning). Yet again the weather was kind to us and although it was pretty cold, the rain held off all night. In a nut shell we worked our way from the eastern side of Melbourne across to Sunbury then back through Melbourne city itself. With only a few DNF's for the night I managed to net about 64 caches for the night ranging from some nice easy trads, multis and puzzles that we had worked out the finals for, and a difficult up tree hide that had me being hoisted up by Blacklegend and Trailrunning, using the harness and ropes supplied by TR. I was glad to get down after that one as with the tightness of the harness was almost giving me at extra set of tonsils, if you know what I mean . The last of the difficult local tree hides now conquered (for now).
Another highlight - or lowlight was when we did Time & Tide. The terrain was very wet and slippery and stinging nettle everywhere. I managed to slip and my right hand and wrist slammed into a great big patch of the stuff. Three days later my hand was still feeling the effects with pins and needles and numbness. At one point we even stopped for a beer at a local pub in Sunbury as we were ahead of time, and sat and relaxed for a few minutes and enjoyed the larger. Back on the road and we continued on, into the early hours of the morning. A great night both for the cache's found and the localities visited.
Thanks for the cache.

13-Aug-12
Yet on another clear winter’s night, The Demotion Crew (TDC – Quasar3671, Blacklegend, and TrailRunning) are out on another mammoth night-time caching run. This time the route took us north of Melbourne. One could describe it as a run through the northern outer suburbs from Eltham to Sunbury, and the final part of the night (or should I say just before daybreak) in central Melbourne. We have all cached these areas before, but with new caches being published all the time, and multi’s yet to be found, the night yielded a swag of over 70 caches. Many of the multi’s had been worked out using Google and streetview in the planning phase before the night. The night was going so well, we were well ahead of time, so we stopped for a beer at a local Sunbury pub. There is nothing like helping out the local economy! The highlight of the night was Cladocalyx (GC2RTN3). This cache I had previously attempted immediately after doing the Woodlands series, but I was so tired I was unable to get to the cache. On this night we had great success in harnessing up Marty, and pulling him up to the cache using my climbing gear. I'm not sure how I missed it last time, but a smilie is noe in the place of an unfound log. Thanks.

08-Aug-12
Parked nearby and walked, got a lock on GZ and stood back to think about my approach. Decided the best way was around the other side and this was at first poor, then wise. Got a face full of cobweb and then found the cache. Nice reward that. TFTC.

Clever hide , thanks !

31-Jul-12
Tftc, good hide. Mum found this one on her 60th birthday.

11-Jul-12
Nemesis negated. This one had been bugging me for a while, but third time lucky. After a couple of hundred more finds worth of experience, when I finally got back to this one today I found it. I had a better idea of what I was looking for (and where I should look after a hint from the CO!). Glad to have it off my list!

09-Jul-12
Quick and easy find. First Geocache on a day of Geocaching. Smallest in the bunch found it and was very proud as it was her first find. Loved the smell of the tree farm. TFTC

24-Jun-12
i searched for a bit.
worried that it may be covered in fresh grass cuttings.
or amongst the rubbish.

but a little more searching finally got it.

Find # 1738

I headed out today despite the misty rain that had just started, I was determined to get another ten caches today as I have set myself a target of getting my 2000th cache at Groundspeak Headquarters in Seattle when I go there in August. I estimate I need another 200 caches before I leave Australia. Today the plan was to start near Heidleberg and then head towards Eltham area.

I parked in the nearby side street and made my way up towards GZ. This one took me quite some time to locate, I was just looking to leave it as a DNF and there it was. Very Happy.

Thanks to R36 for the cache.

27-May-12
Walked up from the last one and had a quick look but impatient hubby & doggy, plus lack of hides and eveything damp held me off from looking too hard today..... hmmm minimal hiding spots and GPS had me in the open.....

15-Apr-12
Searched and searched again and still no find. This one's got me stumped. I need a hint!!!!

14-Apr-12
AH ha tricky!
TFTC

02-Apr-12
There was some building rubble pavers and planks where i thought it should be. I couldn't be bothered moving it to possibly find a cache. Too much for this tired and aching body today after I got a nasty scratch from the tree. Might come back another day.

26-Mar-12
Certainly wasn't a walk up one, but got there with a little persistence! Thankfully noone around today! That brings up number 499... Tftc!

25-Mar-12
Found today on a caching run in Eltham together with nadya. Really enjoyed the residential area around. Good hide! Not too difficult while not plain easy.

25-Mar-12
Nice hide!

11-Mar-12
So after coming here to find the house occupants playing out in the backyard and then walking up to No 2, hoping they would be finished by the time we got back, we walked back here and thought they had gone so started looking. We soon realised they were in fact still out in the backyard when Mum and daughter suddenly started playing again. We had read that they were aware of the cache and as GMelbs GPS took him to the big tree trunk out in the open, we decided to introduce ourselves and tell them what we were doing and the Husband acknowledged he knew about the cache confirming it was roughly in the area where JMelb was looking but he didnt know exactly where. JMelb soon spotted the bold hide and so we showed them what it was and told them to look geocaching up on the website. Never know, there may be some newbies soon !! Smile Off to check up on HOB 7 now
Oh also JMelb accidently dropped her bottle of water at the tree and didnt realise until we got back to the car so GMelb went back to get it. Whilst waiting at the car JMelb first saw a rabbit scurrying for it's life across the road and up into the reserve and about 30 seconds later a fox!!! In the middle of the day, bold as you please! Wow, we just dont get anything like that where we live!!

Just had a quick check, and the cache is definitely still there, and yes, the person who's backyard you can look into knows all about the cache!

24-Feb-12
Searched for a while with no luck!

24-Feb-12
Had a good look for it on Wednesday 22/2 and couldn't find it.

20-Feb-12
A DNF for me today. While I was searching I thought what an odd spot for a cache. It appears to be a dumping ground for neighbours rubbish, and the neighbouring property has a great view to the hiding spot from the comfort of their armchair. I then read in a log that the neighbour has been out asking questions. If I were him I would have thrown the cache away as I wouldn't like seeing people searching along my back fence. I'll be back, I hope the cache is still there.

19-Feb-12
Found 15:50, we spent some time looking for this one, and then played our "Phone A Fried" card. What a Doh! moment, had it been a spider it probably would have crawled down his back and bit him on the butt [B)]

TNLN, CSI=2, thanks R36

11-Feb-12
Didn't Find @ 13:30. Starting to look at GZ, but too many muggles in yards and dogs barking at us. Decided to move on to Eltham needs a cache 2.

05-Feb-12
Hmm, do we head home after family function or go and find some caches before heading back to Ballarat. Yep, caching won. Thanks for the good little wander and the quick find.

26-Jan-12
A couple of caches before lunch, and I so should have done them after! This was the first, and took several minutes before I spied what is really a very logical hide, with the coords not too bad either. Thanks R36.

22-Jan-12
11.00 Out on my own today and thought I would beat the heat. Decided to walk between these 2 so I parked in between. This one had me stumped for quite a while and got to chat to all the doggie walkers as they came by. I love the trees but I have had my mornings full of greenery
Simple excellent hide, loved it
Thanks R36

A NF for me today @ 19;50hrs,will be back for another look.

13-Jan-12
Second of these 2 newies while on my way to work this morning. It wasn't until I arrived at GZ that I realised that this one was the tougher of the two. The problem was compounded by a dog-walker stopping right at GZ while his mutt had a bit of a sniff around so I kept walking down the hill a bit.

Once they had gone, I headed back and started a proper search, including widening my search pattern just in case. In the end, I decided to believe the O3 and the spot-on coordinates had me with the stash in hand at 10:40. A bit more A than clay though I'm happy to admit Wink.

TNLNSL, although our BYO pen geocoin had a visit to mark the occasion. Thanks R36.

13-Jan-12
Found it with my old man on a day off from work. Very close to my parents house! Probably go for Eltham needs more caches #2 tommorow afternoon.

13-Jan-12
Wandered out today to look for the two new Eltham caches. Mr Thetaz spotted this one. Mrs Thetaz was looking in the wrong direction. TFTC

13-Jan-12
Spent a bit of time on this one. Had a feeling it would be where it was but couldn't find it for a while. We had one last look before giving up and I just spotted it. Thanks.

12-Jan-12
Found it at last. Everything had given up the ghost including my pen at the other elthamo cache and phone battery flat. Searched for over an hour. Met one of the neighbors who came out to see what I was doing and educated them about geocaching. They where friendly which surprised considering it was outside their back window. Sadly didn't get excited when I found it. Tftn

Found it 12.25 on 13/01/2012. It took a long time!

08-Jan-12
When I saw Landau's DNF log it was a bit daunting but it had been wet out there overnight. It must have rankled as I woke unusually early, saw the rain had lifted and could not resist a short drive. However no luck so went in search of #2 with more success. Returned for another look and went home for breakfast. The other half of the team said a third look would be good and so finally a *FTF* at 9:40am. Fairly obvious when you think about it. Thanks R36

07/01/2012 22:57 Went for the long walk after collecting the nearby #2. The rain really started to come down and I had no hat or jacket as I had rushed out the door. We already had #2 so this would have been our second ftf but it is well hidden and the rain was soaking us both. It's also hard to see when the rain runs down the lens of your glasses. We were both glad to give this away for one of the other ftf nutters Smile - David & EagleEye
