We weren't going to try this one as the track was initially hard to find.. however we didn't end up on the track we wanted and ended up going past this one. Cache is damp but log still signable. It's behind a dying pine so may require maintenance in the future. Thanks
Here was where we became mesmerised by a flock of Kaka feeding on the Karo trees. Very dry here but plenty of water in the peanut butter jar to water a tree
Lid was off the cache & jar full of water. Tipped the water out. Log just able to be signed. [TFTC]
Went for a walk in this neck of the woods this afternoon hoping to pick up five or six caches. In the end I managed three. Two I didnt seriously attempt based on their recent history, and one other, the new one, was a major DNF. This cache was a quick find. However its behind a tree now marked in red. See photo. Does that mean its for the chop? If the tree disappears, the cache is likely to do so too! #7096. TFTC.
Accio 13:06:22T4mmmy and I have had a blast exploring the Coromandel's, but today is our last day here before we head south and east. A lovely little walk around Opoutere. Quick findThanks G-2 for entertaining me at this location. *{Overall find #11750}*
Got a bit off track but once back on the track cache didn't take long to find.
Manage to completely loose trail between last cache and this cache which was a little concerning with all the dangerous tree signs. Once back on track cache quickly located. Tftc
Was invited to spend some time at the Opoutere campsite with the Winstone family, who have been coming to the campsite for the past 20 years!
Decided to take the kids out and to do some geocaching. They had never been, and really enjoyed it.
Was visible from the right angle. Hints very helpful, and grateful when in the bush.
Had to do a bit of a zig zag back at the Trail Junction before I spotted the trail leading over here, that seemed apparently obvious on my GPS. No problem finding the cache once I successfully navigated to the correct location, TFTC
There were a number of possible hint items here, but I tracked it down eventually.
Its a little bit eerie wandering around here on my own - maybe its those dangerous tree's giving me the creeps
Thanks for putting this here

Nice sized cache here and I liberated a pathtag from the cache. The smell of the trees was quite appealing today, almost perfume like.
Off out for the day to Pauanui and other nearby areas as the weather forecast for tomorrow doesn't look too flash. We found a 'few' caches by a certain North Island CO, which was to be expected due to the prolific regional placements. Guess we can see where he likes to vacation in Jan each year?
I have got a busy few days coming up, and am heading north to the Coromandel peninsula for the weekend with a work holiday home booked for this upcoming long weekend, including stat day on Monday. Then I'm heading home with mrs c for a couple of days leave followed by a couple of days WFH before heading back to Manawatu and my new work area at the weekend. Not massive numbers of cache finds but a few to keep things ticking over and a surprising amount by Auckland based COs too! Thanks to all cache owners for their contributions.

A very pleasant walk from the previous cache along this trail and a nice quick find.

Another use for peanut butter jars. Have some in my maintenance kit. Left our calling card here. Cheers.
Day 12 - Tuesday 29 December - Whangamata - Opoutere - Onemana and back to Whangamata today. Some local beaches to explore so lets go!
The Seagnoid, Zara, Toby and I are off on another geocaching escape over Xmas, this time to the mighty Coromandel, then over to Opotiki and stop off at Rotorua to return home on 5 January. Had an fabulous time exploring many wonders of our country. Rounding up over 400 caches along the way, with a few LABS, 20 odd TMGTs, virtuals and lots of interesting earth caches to keep the mind busy. Watching the sun come up on New Years Day at Mt Maunganui was spectacular. Lots of walking and even more driving. But had an awesome time. Thanks to all COs who made this adventure so special.

More editing of the maps needed. The track here is missing. Will start on some of this tomorrow.
Taybeedragon and I went on a tour of the Coromandel - one of the few places of New Zealand, especially of Te ika a Maui, that I have yet to explore throughly, and from there along the coast to Opotiki to see one of my many, many sisters. From 18 December to 5 January we found over 400 caches, including 12 adventure labs (60 caches), 20 or so TMGTs and a host of virtuals and earthcaches. And I hosted an event to see the sun come up on New Year's day - surprisingly popular given that it was at 5am. We climbed a lot of hills, saw some amazing beaches that were quite popular despite (or because of) the insane access to them, walk a lot of bush, entered and explored 8 gold mines and generally had an awesome time. However I am glad to be back, but now is the hard part, and I fear it will take just as long - logging!

We have visited Opoutere a few times, but have not taken this path before. It is most pleasant, even if the warning signs are discouraging. All good with this one, thanks G-2.
You could almost forget the ocean was right there! Cicadas and birds chirping, the smell of pine in the air.

Spending the long weekend in Whangamata for some Kayaking and Tramping. Arrived today and enjoyed my walk around the area collecting geocaches. TFTC
Good hide. Lucky there was a pencil and sharpener as we lost our pen prrior to the last cache
Having spent a great day cycling and caching in Pauanui, we thought we'd make as much use of the good winter weather as we could. Opoutere looked enticing for a late afternoon caching adventure, and so it turned out to be as we bravely negotiated the dangerous trees in the ever increasing shadows. Woooh Hoooh! On the middle trail. but now there are gunshots all around us. Are they hunters after ducks or are the tree branches trying to get us?? Too dim to see too far. Oh thank goodness, an easy find here. Sign the log and run. Cache all good. If we survive this unscathed we will award you a fav point G-2. You certainly have earned it. TFTC
Been planning on this road trip for ages and finally got there today. Nice early start and beautiful sunshine all day Track is closed but I decided to run the gauntlet as such good weather and no wind to blow branches down. Glad I did as it is a lovely walk and all caches are good TFTC
On a lil mish from Tauranga today with Grandies in tow as they are on school holidays. A bit overcast but nice mild temp. A fabulous place for a cache. I am logging these with a generic template on Cachly. Many Thanks to all cache owners for the placements. Cheers
Having picked up all the caches in Pauanui and Tairua I decided an outing to Opoutere was next closest and what a little hidden gem it is too! The only problem is that most of these caches are in the ‘forbidden forest’. Closed off due to dangerous trees. I was now pretty well in the forest and it was such a still day I continued and continued to feel guilty! Anyway, looked in wrong place at first but then spotted the hint items and the cache.
Thanks for placing and greetings from the .

Cache number 3318. After a nice easy walk to this one. I stayed on the track. Hint items quickly spotted so the cache was in hand just as quick. When I opened it I was pleased to find it empty of Peanut Butter as it is not my favourite spread. A Marmite jar would suit me better. Covered it with pine needles on returning. Thanks for the placement.
Lucky last on this side of the bridge. Really enjoyed this trail, the basis of a great day. Thanks for them all. They are a long way from your Herald Izland Boat Ramp one we found a week or so ago. CBE
Woke up early to lovely views this morning, after overnighting on the foreshore at Whangamata. Time to head north to find caches along the way to Pauanui and Tairua. Neither of us has travelled this part of the country before, so it was all new to us. After visiting the peninsula lookout spot to the north of Whanga our next detour was to Opoutere.
We enjoyed the loop walk around the peninsula. The hint here made for an easy find, thanks.

Found quickly and in good condition with accurate coords and a good hint. Cheers G-2 TFTC

Found all in good condition most enjoyable walk in the forest..signed and returned thanks for a great cache G2
Another great Highlight on my NZ trip! On the map Opoutere looked like a quite and lovely place and so I decided to visit it and have a short stroll near the seaside. That was perfect! It was exactly what I had expected and so I had a very, very nice walk here and also could find some very, very nice Caches. Really a beautifull landscape.
Thank you so much for showing me this nice place and for the caches. I spend some favorite Points here.

This one was good to find even without hint due to lack of mobile connection. Huge trees around though.
The last cache for the day/night. we didn't intend to get this cache, we were hoping this track would lead back to the carpark, it didn't feel right, but as I was thinking these thoughts, rusty said another cache was nearby, so abandoning the thought of being semi-lost, I searched for this instead, as had been said the cache would have been a piece of cake in the light.
Then I must have been seen as being idle, because rusty then grabs the head torch of my head and carries on searching! Hah hah hah, That'll teach me for standing around when there are caches to be found! Good one rusty, because in seconds she found the cache!
So we carried on up the track and the sounds of the beach were to my right, so I said to the girls, I had better do a track log, see where we're at and it was soon obvious we were heading away from the carpark, so back we came, the same way, and we soon hear a guy in the dark not sure of his surroundings! Hmm, what's going on here? We see a fisherman who has made a very bad tactical error by overstaying the daylight and trying to find his way back in the pitch blackness - no torch or cellphone, what a flippin' ning-nong! So I told him he could tag along with us. So I was up front with the head torch, leading the way, showing the others the tricky bits and we made it back without any further ado. Cool adventure though G. you never know what's going to happen...

OK its dark now, and we only have the head torch between us (gorby & supernanny), and the phone batteries are on critical! Now what was meant to be a short cut, took us past this cache, which we overshot, and had to back track to GZ. A bonus find in the dark, which took a bit of searching, again I could call out to the others that I had found it. In daylight it would have been a much easier find.
Its dark and the roar of the sea is on our right, we decide to go back the way we came. Abandoning a possible short cut, to "Trail head which way" (we could not find one). The walk seemed to take ages, and we acquired a fisherman muggle along the way, who had forgot to bring a torch!
It turned out to a night time adventure! and a great way to end the day. We will have to return in daylight, so we can get to see the sea

Time to head back to carpark ..... but what's this ? We somehow are close to one more cache !
A bit of ferretting around and the peanut butter jar revealed itself ......Like the last one , this would have been really obvious in daylight ! Thanks Glyn !
Will be back sometime not too far away to complete this series ....

Mr P's turn and he made a quick find in amongst the pine trees. I hope they never change this reserve into places humans can build upon. t4tc
Staying for a couple of days on this beautiful place: Of corse I want to get some caches here!

Another mini raid in Coromandel to find caches for our latest license challenge... With Gap (of Fap and Gap).
The track in this section was easy and pleasant. We arrived at ground zone and quickly located the cache and completed the business. We heard voices, then saw the group of bare-footed walkers approaching rapidly toward us. It's a bit hard to disguise anything while emerging from the bush. So I pretended I was looking for puha (That always works... and I can pull it off successfully). TFTC.

Staying in Whanga with the family and the weather is just perfect for being at the beach; only problem is, everyone else thinks so too. Decided it'd be worth a drive to a less popular spot, with our kids voting for a return trip to Pukehino, but that had to be vetoed coz my legs are still recovering from a 16km mission through the waitakeres and even the short walk to Opoutere beach is more than enough challenge for my feeble quads today. We've visited here quite a few times since we started caching but in-house 'rules' about not cleaning out all the caches from our family's favourite spots (helps reassure our kids they'll get to come back lol) means sometimes I look for a cache when we're here, sometimes I don't. The carpark was overflowing when we arrived today so I was thinking this would be a non-caching visit but very few people had gotten further than jumping off the bridge at high tide in the estuary. The path to the beach was surprisingly muggle-free so I persuaded the team to detour and have a look for this one. Thankfully a nice quick find, thanks to a great hint. Onto the next! TFTC
JAC & G found it. Not sure how old this one is? Clue is cryptic? Maybe there used to be a swing?
I only had limited time so literally jogged around these paths to get as many caches as I could and appreciated this easy find. I again noticed someone else had visited this spot today.
I almost 4got tht 1, so I had 2 go back all the way. Tried to take a shortcut, but that was not a good idea... Found it anyway in the end

Soon found the different size trees despite having lots of trees to choose from! Log book was pretty wet
Found while being serenaded by a tui. Awesome walk still dodging the family looking for a hang out place. TFTC
We are enjoying the variety of caches on this trail, sometimes you've seen one, you've seen them all. This one offered us an English Breakfast tea bag that would have deteriorated if left, and a pirate bracelet, destined to join the bounty in our new cache in Hamilton, Plunderin' Pirates GC 5C9BZ.
Nice walk, thanks, reminds me a lot of my grandmothers place at Waitarere Beach, and the forest before it was mostly cut down
