In the area for a few days. Always find cemetery caches a little odd. Luckily didnt take too much searching to find correct grave. Tftc
We were staying nearby so had a quick walk down the road to find the cemetary. Luckily someone has recently cleared all the overgrown vegetation so the cache was quickly spotted by the grave of Mr and Mrs Barnes infant daughter. Found with Spudge. TFTC
Last find for the trip. We have never been to a cemetery quite like this one. We think the vegetation has recently been cut, making it an easy find. We noted it was the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Barnes, not their grave.
Well that was a mission, rescued a beached car on the way, correct grave took a wee while to find through the heavy undergrowth but a nice find when we got there. Nice to tick a rarely found one off the list
Cache is bigger than anticipated! Figured it was time to visit a cache that had not been found in a while.
Quite a mission to get here. Once we found the right spot (about 25m from where the GPS is marked), the cache was found deep in overgrown vegetation. Sad to see this place so overgrown.
FYI: wear closed shoes and long pants/shirts. We came back cut up and with a skin rash from searching in the bushes and flax in area.
Making our way to Whitianga for the day and some caching along the way.
A quick find - after a steep climb and a lot of bush bashing. Track overgrown!

I'm sure I've done one up here before... oh well. Still good to explore again. Found with Reny90
WE walked the road to find a private residence so back tracked to a track that went along the bank above the road to these old cememtery plots to find the Barnses. the search was on but finally located them and with more searching the cache with tagged. Cheers. Then its back to Toby but TS has left the car keys back there. So another search to find them before finally departing. Duh
Day 7 - Christmas Eve Thursday 24 December - Whitianga - Matarangi and back to Whitianga. So lets go exploring!
The Seagnoid, Zara, Toby and I are off on another geocaching escape over Xmas, this time to the mighty Coromandel, then over to Opotiki and stop off at Rotorua to return home on 5 January. Had an fabulous time exploring many wonders of our country. Rounding up over 400 caches along the way, with a few LABS, 20 odd TMGTs, virtuals and lots of interesting earth caches to keep the mind busy. Watching the sun come up on New Years Day at Mt Maunganui was spectacular. Lots of walking and even more driving. But had an awesome time. Thanks to all COs who made this adventure so special.

Scarry spot is right - I sliced my hands of the cutty grass looking for the cache. But a scary spot? Nah, it's just a cemetery.
The coordinates here are 25 metres out, rather a surprise they are that bad. I also noticed that the cemetery is not marked on the maps, I will fix that in a week or so.
Taybeedragon and I went on a tour of the Coromandel - one of the few places of New Zealand, especially of Te ika a Maui, that I have yet to explore throughly, and from there along the coast to Opotiki to see one of my many, many sisters. From 18 December to 5 January we found over 400 caches, including 12 adventure labs (60 caches), 20 or so TMGTs and a host of virtuals and earthcaches. And I hosted an event to see the sun come up on New Year's day - surprisingly popular given that it was at 5am. We climbed a lot of hills, saw some amazing beaches that were quite popular despite (or because of) the insane access to them, walk a lot of bush, entered and explored 8 gold mines and generally had an awesome time. However I am glad to be back, but now is the hard part, and I fear it will take just as long - logging!

Out and about for a few days for a bit of a road trip around the Coromandel area. Day Four of my road trip. I started my travels in Coromandel Town and ended my day in Tairua. Nice one! Although the coordinates are about 25m out, I managed to find my way to the cache based on the description and hint. Followed the track all the way, although it is getting quite overgrown it is still not too hard to find. Another great historical spot that I never would have visited if it wasn't for the cache. TFTC, Biggles.
Unexpected long weekend! Off to Coromandel then... Spooky enough when on your own and by the end of the day. Good to find the right (left) trail to get there. Landed on private property earlier on. TFTC
GPS is a bit out, find the track by the sign and follow your nose.
Another place I would never have known about if not for geocaching, thanks for bringing me here. A shame it could not be cleaned up and maintained, something for the local historical society perhaps?

Just mopping up a few caches between Matarangi and Whitianga in my cachemobile after moving my snail shell from the former to the latter.
Had to move past the first two before locating the right grave. Pity it is so overgrown.
Cheers for the cache.

This was definitely different to come to. A forgotten cemetery. Hard to believe 67 are buried in here somewhere. Only a couple that you can see. And this one is holding up better. Left a tb that seemed suited to this cache. Tftc
A nice evening bike ride from Matarangi, with Jude and Grahaem before tea. Very enjoyable, and a great spot for a cache. Cheers M@
A short walk along the discrete track led me to the hidden cemetery. Phone was still pointing 20 m away when I found myself i the right place using the clue. TFTC
Find number 4118. I parked back a little bit and walked over the bridge to GZ. Followed the path and my GPS. GPS wanted me to go further but befor I did I checked the plot and realized I was standing by the Barnes plot. From there it was a quick find but I had forgot my pen. So I have provided a photo of log instead. What an interesting place. I wonder how many more graves there are hidden under the undergrowth. Thank you for bringing me here.
Parked at the end of the Road and made my way toward GZ...found the sign and started up the track it got narrow and over grown...read the hint and was torn between the GPS and hint and private property...finally located the Barns final spot...the cache was quickly found and signed the co -ords appeared to be out a bit which made it a bit more challenging thanks Atawhai for interesting trek and placement
This was a great adventure. We drove our motor home down the road with trepidation but managed to turn around and park up. Headed up the track. Wow another old and forgotten cemetery. But sad to see how neglected it is. My god kept wanting to lead me down towards a house but Macwatt called me back up and after following the hint the cache was found. Thanks for bringing us here atawhai.
A very interesting spot! Well worth venturing along the narrow path. Tftc
Managed to find our way into this neglected graveyard... interesting place and although the co-ords were out the cache was located thanks to the hint. Interesting to note that the grave in question is for the infant daughter of the people in question. TFTC
Staying at Whitianga for a week's R&R and looking for a few cache's here and there in between swimming and tramping. Should have looked at the gravestones on the way in as the phone GPS took me 30 metres beyond. Another find by son. TFTC.
Team BOP have joined forces again this time to tackle the Coromandel. This one took a little searching as the cords were a little out. The hint really saved us here but it didn't suck up too much time . Parking was a bit tricky too, I ended up parking just to the side of the intersection once over the bridge. I do secretly enjoy these grave yard caches but the residents here clearly aren't visited very often. Cheers Atawhai, TFTC
Day 2 -We had planned a big weekend with 6 of us travelling the Coromandel area and logging caches as team BOP. Found many great spots, several caches we replaced wet log sheets and others missing for some time. Lots of km's travelled on tarseal, gravel and some not so good roads. Lots of rained showers seemed to plague us on the first day. SLTFTC
With Gap (of Fap and Gap), (Mr) Davidson clan, NZFlossy, TNXPro, and Philip.Perry… This is the first time we have cached overnight together. What an adventure… We group signed as Team BOP for efficiency and expediency.
We visited so many beautiful and remote locations on the Coromandel Peninsula. Many of these areas deserved to be hosts to caches. However, we encountered several that needed owner maintenance. Wet logbooks seemed to be far too common (We’ve had a lot of rain). Oftentimes, a sodden logbook was stuffed back into the container with a new, bagged logbook alongside (What's up with that?). And then there were some caches that were quite obviously missing (and have been for a while)… Nevertheless, a huge thank you to all of the COs for bringing us to these amazing places… We are determined to return and explore some more.
Another cemetery visit... This took a few sweeps to uncover. TFTC.

Team BOP made this find in the daylight thankfully. Not very scarry, nor scary today, just the coordinates were about on top of the neighbours house, which didnt really help.
Took the track in first but coords had us pointing to the neighbours house, so we back tracked a bit, wandered towards the house, but didnt look right.
On second inspection up the track we went in further and found the Barnes' and then the cache.
We have visited many old cemeteries, but none as neglected as this. Kind of cool really.
Thanks for bringing us here.

What an interesting spot - On a road trip with Team BOP - had a couple of goes getting to the right area. Knew we were correct when we got there but the cords were out quite a bit - and the grave is actually the child of Mr & Mrs Barnes. Thanks for showing us this piece of history TFTC
What an interesting spot to find thanks to geocaching. The coordinates were less than helpful on my iPhone and neither was an obvious GRO trail that led me on a wild goose chase. A close inspection of gravestone revealed a further inconsistency, but the hint was followed and the cache revealed. Took the trackable inside. The log was damp and I could have brought some up, but left it in the car at the end of the road. Thanks for bringing us here. TFTC
Amazing to see the graves with fences and scattered headstones in the bush. Thanks for bringing us here!!
With the annual work fishing trip on this afternoon in Coromandel town, I thought I'd make a full day of it and head over first thing and make it a bit of a caching trip too. So I was out the door about 5.30am, with a general plan to find caches around the Whitianga and Kouatunu areas before heading over to Coromandel Town for the fishing trip.
Noticed the sign saying no vechile access to the cemetery so parked before the bridges and walked up to the cache. There was a sign at the start of the track pointing out the cemetery so access wasn't a problem. With the rain that we recently had and the track begining a bit overgrown, meant I got a bit wet getting to GZ. The GPS was pointing me about 15m out, but the hint put me in the right spot and the cache was soon found. A cool spot for a hide.

Headed over to find this one, the last in the area for us before heading to another beach...parked as close to GZ as we could get and footed it down the road until we saw a "private road" sign... well that put the difficulty rating up a little... I had noticed a little trail into the trees a little ways back down the road so headed up the path, but felt a little out of place as people were out in the yards of the dwellings just down the hill from GZ... the GPS had me just about at GZ when only meters away one of the locals just about spotted me... as I hid in the long grass I located the hint to then make the find... log very wet.
I left the area unobserved.

#11348. An interesting historic grave yard; shame it isn't better maintained. TFTC.
Today, we had pencilled in a trip via the 309 Pony Express power trail but the predicted rain arrived early so postponed the trip to hopefully do another day. We had a leisurely morning then mid morning, the rain stopped so decided to head out but to stick to mainly sealed roads and short walks in case the rain restarted.
It's unbelievable that this historic little cemetery is in such a sorry state. I stopped to admire one gravestone, then saw the sad inscription on it. Then after we realised that the co-ords were off and used some alternative ones, found that I had stopped right by GZ. Thanks for bringing me here, worth a detour. TFTC,

Geocaching takes you to spots that normally one would never go. What a pity someone connected to the cemetery or local conservation group does not give it a make over - must be a lot of history to be uncovered. Thanks for bring us here. The log book is very wet and needs replacing, appears as if recent visitors have not been able to record as the last entry I found was during 2014.
What a beautiful and peaceful place cache is easy enough to find it's the cemetery that's hard & when they said no cars they mean it. Glad I had sneakers on for this bushwalk. TFTC
to bad that this is in this shape
it was a really big surprise to see a cemetery in the middle of the trees...and the walking path to it was just invisible
thank you very much for sharing this amazing place

Relatively simple cache to find. Once again by previous comments it seems local knowledge trumps tourist activity.
It didn't take too long to find this cache, although the coordinates were 26 metres out for us. Our coordinates were S36 43.804 E175 43.540. We suspect Dr and Mrs Barnes would prefer their correct titles. The log was quite damp. TFTC
We had a spare day so it time to head up the coast to find some caches that were new for us
and weather was good TFTC The log is to wet, just managed to get a signature on it.

Came here during a day's exploration and cache finding in the area. A very interesting site, certainly difficult to find if you didn't know it was there. Found the cache after a short search, the GPSr was trying to lead me 30 metres down the hill into private property so I had to trust the hint. Signed log, TFTC!
Book quite wet. Worth a visit. Left a poppy, thought it appropriate. Cache right on the spot. Please be careful around the site.
Map on GPS was showing this as a loop road, but turned out not to be the case. We back tracked and parked just by the bridge and walked up to the track. What an awesome piece of local history. We really enjoyed exploring around here and reading the headstones that were still in place. Gets a favourite from us. TFTC.
Our first attempt at finding this one was in the complete wrong direction and we were all very confused - seemed like a whole lot of bush rather than a graveyard. After having to head back down the hill and move our cars (which we had cleverly parked in the middle of the driveway) we started again and this time were on the right track - cache was exactly where the hint suggested. It was sad to see the area so overgrown and forgotten about, so it's nice to know that those resting here still have a few visitors.
We'll this was a little journey. We headed up the hill finding the path and up the hill past the sigh... Hummmm. Only a couple of grave sites around, and none that fitted the description. Then a car came along the road below. 'Toot Toot'.. Ah nugget we had parked our cars blocking the entrance way... So we went back moved cars and basically started again. This time finding the correct path to the correct GZ.

Lovely to visit this restful peaceful spot while enjoying a wee road trip in my Geonut. Parked by private drive and wondered along the small but overgrown track up the side of a hill. Not long and then came across a few very old and interesting graves. Mr and mrs very welcoming and cache was exactly where it said it was thanks. Shame it's so overgrown and forgotten.
We left our car before the bridge and favoured the left fork which took us a long way off track and had to make our way back again. Then we found that that the approach to the overgrown little cemetery is left just before the private driveway sign. At the cemetery notice a 'grave' sign pointed left up the hill but that wasn't right. So then we went right along a track and cache was exactly where described, except the grave is of the infant daughter of Dr and Mrs Barnes. We agree with a previous cacher that it's sad to see the historical cemetery in disrepair but it was great to be able to visit it.
Thanks very much to the locals and others for showing us around on our first visit to this lovely area. We are celebrating our 42nd wedding anniversary holidaying and having fun geocaching together.

A reminder of the harsh living conditions of previous generations. Left a wee baby and a butterfly, rehid the cache a bit more as it was right out when we found it. A fav from us.
Did you spot the 1948 penny? It was near where we parked.

Followed track to cemetery and found the right grave just along the same track. Cache nice and easy. TFTC.
I like areas of old history like this.
Soon found but co-ords were a little away for me.
A real shame this location has been allowed to get into such a poor state.
Earns a favourite point. SL TFTC

On a Geocache mission from Coromandel to Whitianga and back. Found it eventually. Sending message to CO.
9.30am.One of those places we would never find on our own. A favourite point from us for bringing us here. We expect one day someone will get enthusiastic and clean the place up. It deserves better. A quick find although GPS wanted us to go further.
Thank you. David and Noeline.

We never find cemeteries scary. This was one of the most unusual cemeteries we have visited due to the unkempt and overgrown nature of the site. Parked back over the bridge so as not to block access and walked the overgrown track to GZ. Found the Barnes daughter's grave (see image) and Garmin said 37 metres to GZ but cache was as previous finder described. Have entered coords we got for reference as we had excellent satellite reception. Said hellow to neighbour down below as his dog was barkingly aware of our presence. Favourite for interesting spot. Recommend the visit. TFTCSL
Followed bkj97 who was convinced we were on the right track. We were and cache in hand quickly. See bkj97's log. Not much evidence of the 60 plus burials but well worth the visit. T4TCSL
I must have been tired because at the beginning of this cache hunt I did everything wrong - went left at the fork in the road instead of right... retraced my steps and found the track... then went too far uphill, lost the track and ended up going cross country through the cutty grass - ouch! Then finding the right track I trotted along looking for the right grave... hunt, hunt in the local area until I managed to turn myself around and there she was... Mr P was asleep in the sun by the time I got back. t4tc
Co-ordinates well out. But found it behind a bush on the right-hand side of the grave of the infant daughter of Dr and Mrs Barnes, as sort of implied by the hint. Pen no longer works, so BYOP (lost mine on the track up). Thanks for the cache.

#889, Wouldn't like to do this after dark, has to be one of the creepiest graveyards I have ever been to, what with the overgrown trail and the huge tree's some falled over and then the derelict state of the graves all apart from Dr Barnes. which was creeply almost freshly polished. Told daughter to hurry and find cache so we can get out of here. She at 7 was oblivious to any fear and was quite amused at mine. TFTC

Not a scary spot at all, we are particularly fond of these types of hides. We love all the history that can be found at such places. Thanks for the placement. Starting to get dark now and the tummies are starting to rumble.
