Today I'm attempting to find the entire Viking Helmet geoart series in a day, aided and abetted by jeanjeanie and LNM1961.Having just spent an hour doing a round trip to get a solitary cache in that series (number 46), we stopped by this one as a sort of extra prize to help feel like that hour was worth it. I did most of the '52 on 52' series over 6 years ago, so it was good to stop to find one of the last remaining ones for me. A quick find, and we were soon back on our way again.

Another easy find on our trip. Thanks---the Seagnoid and I are attempting to complete the Viking Helmet GeoArt trail in one day. This is not a small undertaking given that the 61 caches are spread across multiple roads that don't directly link together, one connecting road has a closure due to a slip, one cache is ~10km up its own road (with no others along the way), some have DnF's, there are many other unfound caches along the way to distract us, and it's a lot of time, driving, and kilometers. But we did it! We found all 61 of them in 13 hours, with the only downsides being a frustrated EtherLady and cold dinner waiting for us.Thanks to the CO's for their part in today's adventure SmileLog signed as ECatS (Etherlord Clan and the Seagnoid)

Discovered the original hint is no longer relevant, but expanded our search area by a couple of metres and soon had some luck at a corner.

I'm on a wee road trip to southern Hawkes Bay (or is to northern Wairarapa?) on an attempt to clear the Vikings Geoart, with a bit of freedom camping down at the coast. (Apologies for the generic logging)Today it's the run up from Wellington, over the track and up to Dannevirke before heading out into the back roads.Base around hint object cleared. Found cache on corner. All good here and TFTC.Find #6257 at 8 January 2024 3:17 pm

In the southern Hawkes Bay with rattll for a few days. Aiming to complete the Viking series. Our route took us past this cache, so it would have been rude not too. Bit of a hunt, but found it in the end. However, now I've spotted another series to complete! Tftc!

Isis58 and I are on our way from Masterton to Dannevirke today in the hope of picking up as many 52 on 52 and Viking caches as possible. I apologise for the cut and paste logs, I was doing the driving and didnt have much time to make any notes at each stop. Thanks for the cache Skindo

On a road trip with part of Team BOP and enjoying ourselves It is the first time since covid and just like old times Done all our solving for the Viking trail beforehand and put them on an offline list To collect this trip and a few others. Weather quite windy and few showers Lots of fun to be out again. Thanks to all the COs

Matariki weekend and a team of us from BOP have ventured south for a caching weekend. The team consists of TNXPro, NZFlossy, McJandals and DavidsonClan. Logs signed as Team BOP.
Weather cold wet and windy but that won’t stop us on our mission.
Ngā mihi for the cache hides.

14-Jul-23
With Matariki being a new holiday, part of Team BoP hatched a plan to collect a geo art series in the wairarapa and of course others along the way there and back.

I am logging using the Cachly app template so please excuse generic logging along the way. It’s just my way of keeping track, but I do genuinely thank each and every one of you cache owners for taking the time and energy to place these caches. Many Thanks for bringing me here. Cheers.

Out and about on a road trip with Lis'screw. Today we are collecting the vikings puzzle series and a few others as we go. This one was quickly found. What a fascinating spot, and very interesting to read the plaque and learn some of the history of the area. TFTC.

I've just been on a great geotrip with my friend thedbees. We went to the Palmerston North area to collect the Stickmen and Viking puzzles. We'd then gone down to stay with a geocaching buddy in Greytown. She kindly drove us around that area before we set off to Levin via a few more specifically targeted caches. On our way home to Paihia we collected the mini Jasmar year challenges which I was also keen to get.

Today was the last of two days planned to collect the Viking series. We'd done a loop and were now onto a long detour to collect some of the others in the series.

A non archived skindo. Couldn't pass up a chance to grab this on our way past. A quick find here too. Thanks for all your hides skindo Smile

Found on a roadtrip to compete the Vikings series and pick up some other nearby caches such as the northern end of 52 on 52. Fortunately I had boxhill riding shotgun with his superb planning and navigation skills. Cool He managed to come up with a good trip plan to visit all the far flung caches and remote road ends, while I practiced my rally driving skills. Wink

It was a fun mission and we were really lucky that the forecast rain kept away, so we enjoyed humid temps up to 30 deg with plenty of sunshine.

These few caches in this area were the main reason for driving along route 52 from Masterton to Napier. They are almost perfect antipode to some caches logged in Madrid Spain. This will be perfect for an upcoming antipode challenge which I plan to create. No problems finding the caches and all good with them. Tftc and greetings from Finland.

Last cache of the day, I again removed the wet and ripped bits and left the swag dice in there. Thanks for your (many) caches today skindo.

Starting on this long route of caches, about half of them done today. Notes where possible.

After a whistle-stop previous visit to todays route back in April, I had a whole day to myself and some blue-sky/bluebird weather which is a departure from the more recent downpours. Todays target was a few more in Woodville, some more local PWGT Geotour caches and make a start on the cache highway (52) between back blocks of Waipukurau and Wairarapa (only as far as Weber today). My highest find total for many months, almost all targets met and a nice drive along some fairly quiet roads and around 450kms traveled! The road between Wimbledon was atrocious, slumps, holes, dips and side of road fallen away, but driveable I suppose. Thanks to all COs for their hides to make my day enjoyable.

We are on our summer holiday, we usually take a few weeks and travel around the South Island, but this year we are heading around the North Island. Heading up the West coast and back down the East coast. Finding only a select few caches along the way, we are mostly targeting some challenges we have qualified for, some large size caches, some that fill gaps in our date placed grid, a few D/T combinations, some with lots of favourite points, letterboxes and anything else that grabs our fancy.

I had a fall on day two of our holiday, while out geocaching which has resulted in a fractured bone in my leg and I am in a moon boot and with crutches and I was told to keep weight off my leg. So I am only limited use when it comes to our trip now. I tend to stay in the campervan and just hand out suggestions of when and where GK should search.

Another quick find to mark the roads we drove along.

Thanks for placing this cache and thank you for the smiley.

Heading down to Masterton for a week of work. Decided to skip SH2 and take the scenic route along the coast. Stayed the night at the Freedom camping at Porangahau beach which was great. Off to Herbertville for the morning then Pongaroa in the afternoon collecting some caches. This stretch of road is rather depressing. Lots of logging trucks and views of deforestation. I know it gives people jobs but the environmental impact seems sad. Still.Mrs Rubbishparty was cheered up to realise that today’s date was palindromic. The benefits of being married to a maths teacher.

Day 1 of our road trip around parts of the Waiarapa.
Weather patches of rain all day with some heavy down pours and to add to the fun very cold and windy all day.
Some caches we found hadn't been found for some time and very over grown.
Other containers and logs very wet so replaced these ones the best we could with new log sheets.
Some great scenery and some interesting sites visited today.
Both of us have never traveled these roads before with the gravel roads in good condition.
Thanks for the cache placements - SLTFTC

With Gap (of Fap and Gap)...

We have been planning for Queen's Birthday weekend for some time - routes and caches were identified and mapped, and Gap solved a whole lot of puzzles in readiness for this adventure. We scoured many online logs and took note of the condition of the caches and their logbooks. We determined to replace any containers and logbooks where there was a dire need - This is not usually our habit and is quite time consuming; but we are enthusiastic cachers and believe in doing our bit for the wider caching community...

It rained heavily overnight, and we expected more of the same over the weekend. As if on cue, the first day of winter brought biting cold wind and driving rain. Today had the potential to be quite miserable, but we had a caching mission to pursue. As the day wore on, we rearranged our clothing layers to conserve body heat... We started out on the 52 on 52 trail with enthusiasm. We've wanted to do this series for ages... There were a couple of items to choose from - a quick find. Thanks Skindo and TFTC.

We are away in our campervan just cruising the manawatu to Waiarapa then on to Hawkes Bay and return. During our tour we enjoyed travelling the quiet roads away from the main state highways. we enjoyed the bike trails around the Napier to Clifton and the inland trails up to Hastings and beyond, many of these trails of course were extra special because they had geocaches placed along them. Many thanks to all those who look after the caches. We hope you enjoy the same when you come into our area.
Sorry about the cut and paste if you have more than one geocache that we had found

I thought i had found this a couple of years ago and had logged it as such but now deleted it as i i am sure i hadnt' so this is now a new log. couldn';t read the old log as it was all wet. but now replaced and re-signed while on our trip down part of the old SH 52 now called route 52. from Waipukurau to weber.
Today was the day to attack a few more of Route 52 caches . The day was warm and sunny and we left at 7.00am. arriving home about 5.30pm The day had its litte moments . As we were travelling over the saddle road we were passed by a group of motorbike riders OH one took the corner too wide got into the lose metal skidded off the road and seemingly quite injured, while the second turned off the road to help but skidded on other lose metal and he too came off his bike Their mates were soon nearby to assist with cell phones etc and so we moved on. we had a lovely icecream at Wimbleton and lunch at Porongahau.
Many of the cache had soaking pulpy logs which we replaced with water proof paper. replaced logg here also.
The road at this end was in reasonable condition . not too many pot holes.
State Highway 52 is a former state highway now reclassified Route 52. It runs from Waipukurau, Central Hawkes Bay, to Masterton in the Wairarapa through Porangahau on the east coast and the Weber and Pongaroa hill country on the lower eastern side of the North Island.
History
Route 52 runs south through southern Hawkes Bay and the Tararua District to the Wairarapa passing through the coastal side of the one-time very dense forest of the Seventy Mile Bush, known at its southern end as the Forty Mile Bush.
Waipukurau to Porangahau
The 26 miles of road was approved by Provincial Council in April 1859 and constructed over the next year but, five years later, passage was still difficult.
Porangahau to Weber
By 1864 a road reached Wainui — renamed Herbertville in 1889 — though bridges still had to be made. A separate Weber Road Board was established in 1890, an offshoot of the Porangahau Road Board.
Weber Pongaroa Alfredton
Downgrade
Route 52, upgraded to a State Highway about 1960, lost its state highway status because usage did not grow but fell away as prosperity deserted New Zealand's farming industry. Farmers shed staff and cut back development. Farming districts became depopulated and the intervening settlements failed to grow. Nevertheless, Route 52 remains the only road access to large areas of highly productive hill country farmland.
Once serviced by coastal steamers remote areas like Akitio and Herbertville are accessed through Route 52's links to State Highway 2.
Because of its scenic qualities it is now a cycle touring route and noted by some as one of the must drive roads in New Zealand. The road is relatively narrow and winds through steep hill country. Wandering livestock and stock trucks are hazards
Southern Hawke's Bay
Route 52 leaves Waipukurau at its intersection with SH 2. From there it passes through numerous small farm settlements. Heading south-east the highway goes to the coastline at Porangahau through Wanstead and Wallingford where it turns back inland in a SSW direction. From there it passes through Weber, Waione, Pongaroa, and Tiraumea before heading west to Alfredton. From Alfredton it heads in more southerly direction to Ihuraua along Whangaehu Valley Road to Lansdowne, Masterton.
Taumata
A few kilometres south of Porangahau Route 52 passes a hill with one of the world's longest place names, Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu. A Maori word meaning "The place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'landeater', played his flute to his loved one

thanks for all these caches and now to do the last remaining one closer to Masterton. the cache

#5140. Its the longest day of the year and I am planning a big caching day. Spent the night in Hastings at the local holiday park and now doing a few Hastings caches before heading south via Route 52 to Masterton and then back to Wellington. The plan is to find at least 70-80 caches today so I can get my numbers up for the bulk find component of the DGSC challenge (1500 needed in a year). Part of a blitz to try and get an additional 200 caches found by Boxing Day. I have done 82 in past 2 days driving from Auckland to Hawkes Bay. Heading south again and finally onto Route 52. Great to be back into familiar territory and hunting out more skindo caches. The cache was quickly in hand, signed and replaced. Thanks for hiding the cache here skindo. It was at this place that I realised that my coordinates for Weber had not uploaded so had to start up the laptop and load up GSAK so I could locate the corrected coordinates for that mystery cache.

28-Nov-17
We set out today on an expedition to the Wairarapa to focus mainly on collecting a section of the Route 52 series of caches. We left Palmerston North about 9am and headed to Dannevirke and on out to Weber for our first cache. Then it was caching along Route 52, lunch at Pongaroa, more caching to Afredton, Eketahuna and finally back to Palmy, getting there about 5.15pm. It was a fine day for geocaching, but very hot for such a lot of travelling - the air-con was a blessing.
The cache was quickly found here. The log was quite damp, but was able to be signed. TFTC

Off for a trip to Masterton from Hastings with our main aim being the the 52 on 52. In the end it took us a little over 8 hours with only two of the series that we didnt find, and picking up na few off the trail as we went. Although most were in good condition there were some that were wet and some that were just mushy logs impossible to write on. TFTC

Out on a day trip to Waihi Falls collecting a few caches along the way. Hadn't intended to do too many of these Route 52 caches as we will do the entire trip from end-to-end at some stage in the future. However we missed the parking for the cache a bit further along the road to Weber and this was a convenient turning point. Another quick find to add to the day's tally before backtracking to get the cache we missed. TFTC.

Cache no.27 for the day. T f T c skindo.

Logged as team SHATner - (SpudNZ, Hunterhillson, AtomsNZ, Tommygun9) Spent the day caching out in and around the Mighty Manawatu, the Wild Wairapapa and the Bay of Hawkes, in the hope of clocking up +100 caches. As well as seeing some of the best scenic views rural NZ has to offer, we also came across a few stray sheep, a couple of rabbits, Farmer Joe, the Ram gang, some shifty goats, Farmer Dave, a pie, a cop, Farmer Ned and Farmer Ted, diggers, mud, rain, sun, fog, Farmer Jane and her trusty farm dog.. And even a few caches!

20-May-15
In the wee hours of 20 May 15, Tommygun9, Atomsnz, Hunterhillson and myself formed an elite squad for a daring raid into Skindo land. Our codename; Team SHAT-ner.
We would be operating deep behind enemy lines, often out of contact range from Hotel Quebec, limited supplies and no chance of rescue, should we need one. We were horrendously out numbered. I’ve heard rumours that it was close to 300 to one.
Our mission; covertly kill off as many insurgents as we could and return home alive. We had all set personal goals for the mission; mine was to crack the 120 mark. Although, I had recently learnt that another member of our squad from yesteryear had a tally of 133. Perhaps I need to re-evaluate my goal.
Our insertion point was the North entry to Route 52, where we soon realised that the insurgents were coming thick and fast. We had to fight for every inch down that road. After 10 hrs of battling insurgents at every turn, we eventually reached our Southern most point, the insurgent stronghold of Masterton. It was the “home straight” from here. We blasted our way North as fast we could. Sporadically shooting insurgents from our windows as we went. The road was blocked near Mount Bruce so we had to make a detour back towards Masterton and take some of the back roads. I hope this wasn’t a trap. We eventually made it back over the hill to safety. I don’t think we were followed.
We did notice a few spotters located down the back roads that we didn’t clear. No doubt, they’ll relay any information back to their Supreme Leader and we’ll see reinforcements taking up defensive positions around the country side on the satellite imagery we receive.
Weeks of prior planning and INTEL gathering meant a smooth and successful mission was carried out. Against the odds, we returned home well after dark, safe and sound after a hard days work.

Some numbers for the mission:
620 km’s covered,
16.5 hrs of driving,
132 insurgents killed; of which 118 blindly follow Supreme Leader Skindo.
116 were killed on site
16 were questioned before being put in front of the firing squad.
7 evaded us.

For acts of bravery above and beyond the call of duty. In which I successfully carried out a raid into enemy territory and killed 120 hostiles or more, I am awarded the Ruby Badge. I also received various other badge upgrades as well.

A quick find made by the team here. Signed as Team SHAT-ner
Thanks for the cache and the smiley.

After hearing that Tommygun9, SpudNZ and Hunterhillson were planning a mission to Skindoland to knock off some caches out there I decided that I couldn't possibly be left behind to go to work for the day while they had all the fun -so I offered my expertise in solving Skindo puzzles in exchange for a seat in the vehicle. Turns out I only ended up having to solve a couple but gained a seat anyway.
Starting out well before the crack of dawn, my hope for the day was to crack 1,000 caches and under the cover of darkness I found my 1,000th cache at around 8.30pm. After coming across a major accident on state highway 2 our route home was greatly expanded and it was close to 11pm before we finally made it back to civilization and a well deserved dinner.
Thanks to all the cache owners for the caches we found today

20-May-15
SpudNZ, Hunterhillson, AtomsNZ and Tommygun9 (me) (we logged ourselves as "TEAM SHATner" to save space and time) decided to set off for a caching mission to gather a heap of caches in the Wairarapa on a Wednesday. Noting that the weather was going to be good we set off from Palmy a little after 0600 and grabbed a few caches in the dark and morning light before (having a pie and) setting off south down Route 52. We had a couple of zig and/or zags south and got to Masterton in the dark of the moonless evening. Two of our party broke through the 1000 cache mark while I managed a day of 125 finds. We got back to Palmy very late cold, tired and hungry and know that, despite the uncharacteristically fine weather, summer is definitely the better time of year for long caching missions. Thanks to the local hiders for all their caches.
T F T C Skindo.

Sorry for logging late...

This cache was visited by me either during the one month (February 2015) of hiking/tramping in NZ together with Bärgegumperli or in March/April 2015 while on a bicycle trip across NZ and AUS.
We/I enjoyed geocaching a lot. Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

Hiking
Hikes:
- Abel Tasman NP: Motueka, Kaiteriteri, Marahau, Inland Track, Separation Point, Coastal Track, Marahau.
- Nelson Lakes NP: St. Arnaud, Hopeless Hut, Travers Saddle, Blue Lake, Waiau Pass, Thompson Pass, D'Urville Valley, Lake Angelus, St. Arnaud.
- Arthur's Pass NP: Mt Brown Hut, Styx Valley, Browning Pass, Whitehorn Pass, Waimakariri Valley, Jordan Saddle, Hut Spur, Arthur's Pass, Mt Aicken
- Bridle Path
The weather conditions were great for tramping almost every single day. We enjoyed the beautiful landscape, the peace in some very remote areas and the many friendly people we met on our way or in the different huts.

Cycling from Dunedin to Auckland
It is not my first tour with this bicycle (map with long loading time).
Places along the route: Dunedin, Otago Central Rail Trail, East Manuherikia track, Tekapo, Fairlie, Geraldine, Oxford, Waipara, Hanmer Springs, Jacks Pass, Island Saddle, Picton, Wellington, Homedale, Hutt River Trail, Masterton, Pongaroa, road near Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu, Waipukurau, Fernhill, Taupo, Whakamaru, Tirau, Hauraki Rail Trail, Kawakawa Bay, Aukland.
After one month of perfect weather (see above) I finally got what I had to expect: Some rain... And sometimes stron headwinds. That the route was not flat at all meant usually that the landscape is great Big Grin.

Cycling from Melbourne to Darwin
Places along the route: Melbourne, Great Ocean Road, Penshurst, Edenhope, Jervois Ferry, Sedan, Tanunda, Crystal Brook, Port Augusta, Coober Pedy, Uluru/Ayers Rock, The Olgas/Kata Tjuta, Mereenie Loop, Alice Springs, Karlu Karlu/Devil's Marbles, Litchfield NP, Mandorah, Darwin.
Along the coast the weather was often wet and cold. The small roads in Victoria and South Australia were very pleasant to ride despite a lot of headwind. This changed as soon as I reached the Stuart Hwy to sometimes strong tailwinds. That's why I had some "spare" time to ride a loop in the Red Centre. Further north
As in NZ i met some awesome people.

Guess what I did while waiting for a connecting plane in Perth?

Greetings from Switzerland / Gruess us dr Schwiiz

*There are a lot(!) of caches which I did not search while on the bicycle trip. The reasons are mainly:
1. Stopping slows if one wants to get somewhere, especially on bridges where no one wants to slow down a fully loaded touring bike. Yes, there were quite a few days with >200 km on the pushbike...
2. Riding or resting next to a loaded (recumbent) bike attracts in some areas so much attention that stealth mode is not possible.
3. On rare occasions I rode during the night. If I had to do that there was no time to search for caches anyway [:-(]
4. Some places I did really not consider worth stopping for a cache... Sorry.

Logged together with Tarkal and Linnkal on our vacation trip to New Zeeland. Between looking at the great views and experience the typical NZ "things" we will mange to find some caches Wink. This was one of them. The cache was rather quick to find on good description. This time it was Linnkals turn to find the cache first. The logg is wery damp, in fact we poured out som water from the container Sad.
Thanks for the cache.

well had planned this caching to kick off at 10 this morning but hubby left the lights on in the car overnight and the battery was flat as a pancake this morning.
we had waiting for setucurst to turn up so we were able to cache a new road together, we followed in suit racing to see who could find the cache first
So once we sorted that we were on our way to hopefully get 33 odd caches and pick up caches I missed on the last run through here, where there wasnt a place to stop safely with just me.
Came across another cacher from Nelson had a little chat over a cache and carried on.
I have added my card to all and handmade swag to the ones that I could fit something into, there were a nice range of container sizes, and as the rain stayed away they were easy grabs (even if some were for a second time hunting.
Thanks for the cache, sorry this is a past and copy

Headed out on the first flight to Wellington Saturday morning with FMZ and Lostcourse. Relocating a vehicle back to Auckland meant we had a big caching road trip ahead of us...! We headed back through the Wairarapa towards Napier, clocking up the numbers through skindo land. Sorry for the copy/paste log as its now all abit of a blur having cached for 36 hours with only a few short naps in between. Enjoyed the drive through these rough and winding gravel roads and saw alot of interesting sights.

36 hours, 1,200km, & 315 finds made for an epic adventure! Many thanks for the cache and the perfect excuse to make a weekend of it! Big GrinBig Grin

Took the first flight down to Wellington on Saturday for a fly-down-drive-back-caching weekend with mike-miss and FMZ - basically a caching raid across the North Island.Team FML! for the win! We headed out of Wellington making a beeline for the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay before venturing back to Auckland. We headed through a bunch of interesting winding back roads and saw a lot of beautiful sights and historic spots that only geocaching could have bought us too. We shared the duties around and took a few micro naps when ever prudent. Saturday was my biggest caching day ever, and this February, is easily my biggest month ever. After a DNF at Earth Sandwhich it was good to get back in the finding habit. Cheers for the cache placement!

Headed down to Wellington for a fly-down-drive-back-caching weekend with mike-miss and Lostcourse - basically a caching binge drive back to Auckland, caching under the moniker "Team F.M.L." We headed out of Wellington as quickly as possible to get some serious caching done in the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay before heading back to Auckland. Apologies for the copy/paste log, but we found >310 caches in 36 hours and for many it's hard to remember specific details. We headed through a bunch of interesting winding back roads and saw a lot of beautiful sights and historic spots. We shared the driving and stopped for about an hour to catch some shut eye in Pongaroa before continuing, caching all the way. Saturday was my biggest caching day ever, and this Feb, after just the first 36 hours, is already my biggest month ever. TFTC!!! Big Grin

We spent 3 days traveling on SH52 with the caravan. Thanks to Skindo's cache placement, we were able to stop at most of the caches. This is a great way to visit all the bridges and streams

Out for a day trip to the Hawkes Bay coast to find some sunshine and some geocaches - successful on both counts. Good to collect more caches in the 52 on 52 series too. Enjoying the drive, thanks skindo.

I rarely write copy/paste-logs, but for these caches I will make an exception. Quite a few of the logs were quite damp and falling apart, but still signable. Most caches were quite easy finds too (the ones we could find Wink).

Nice and quiet road with easy parking at most caches (we did skip a few where parking was on the other side of the road) and very nice views Smile

Found at 15:30 - #4394 - together with aedk and Difool - logged as RAD to save space and time
