I thought it was time I did another clean up of the Northern Wairarapa area, particularly the 52 on 52 series and others nearby. I did many of the 52 on 52 caches before the series was created and their names changed to match - but that is all old history, about 9 or 10 years ago. Since a lot of caches have been archived in recent years, but many are still there and in good condition, I decided to try to find a few that looked likely to still be there - particulalry skindo caches where I had already solved the puzzle. The end result was a 12 hour round trip from Wellington, with 87 finds (of which 17 were archived caches).
Found the cache as per the hint, but the hint object wasn't obvious, although coords are good!

Heading down to Masterton for a week of work. Decided to skip SH2 and take the scenic route along the coast. Staying the night at Pongaroa Domain nearby. After dinner we stretched our legs to find the two local caches. You know you’re in rural New Zealand when the sheep are grazing the rugby field.. Thanks for the smiley.
Found after lunch. Followed the coordinates rather than the hint object. Thanks for placing the cache
We managed to get out for a short time to find a few more caches. Took a while to find. TFTC
It's our last day staying in the area but still time to get out in the morning to do some caching. Found with Polargirl and Allepousse. This one had us stumped for a few minutes as the bush was gone and we couldn't find any remains. However, we disturbed a slater home and unearthed the cache.
Found remnant of hint object per previous finders, but no cache there or in wider area. Replaced with permission.
This area must once have had quite a lot of vegetation but someone's been through with the slasher and weedkiller since then. TFTC Skindo!
Day 1 of our road trip around parts of the Waiarapa.
Weather patches of rain all day with some heavy down pours and to add to the fun very cold and windy all day.
Some caches we found hadn't been found for some time and very over grown.
Other containers and logs very wet so replaced these ones the best we could with new log sheets.
Some great scenery and some interesting sites visited today.
Both of us have never traveled these roads before with the gravel roads in good condition.
Thanks for the cache placements - SLTFTC

With Gap (of Fap and Gap)...
We have been planning for Queen's Birthday weekend for some time - routes and caches were identified and mapped, and Gap solved a whole lot of puzzles in readiness for this adventure. We scoured many online logs and took note of the condition of the caches and their logbooks. We determined to replace any containers and logbooks where there was a dire need - This is not usually our habit and is quite time consuming; but we are enthusiastic cachers and believe in doing our bit for the wider caching community...
It rained heavily overnight, and we expected more of the same over the weekend. As if on cue, the first day of winter brought biting cold wind and driving rain. Today had the potential to be quite miserable, but we had a caching mission to pursue. As the day wore on, we rearranged our clothing layers to conserve body heat... We started out on the 52 on 52 trail with enthusiasm. We've wanted to do this series for ages... Rain scuppered our plans to explore the area more fully. So we made one last find before leaving Pongaroa. What ever happened to the hint object? There was barely enough cover for this hide, but the cache was quite secure. Thanks Skindo and TFTC.

We are away in our campervan just cruising the manawatu to Waiarapa then on to Hawkes Bay and return. During our tour we enjoyed travelling the quiet roads away from the main state highways. we enjoyed the bike trails around the Napier to Clifton and the inland trails up to Hastings and beyond, many of these trails of course were extra special because they had geocaches placed along them. Many thanks to all those who look after the caches. We hope you enjoy the same when you come into our area.
Sorry about the cut and paste if you have more than one geocache that we had found

Found today while out with PJMacNZ, Haydn.seek, Etherlord Clan and TwigNZ. Quick easy find. Log signed as "Team PHETT" (PJMacNZ, Haydn.seek, Etherlord, TwigNZ, and myself)
Thanks For The Cache
Thanks For The Cache
Today my son (ThatWeirdGuy04) and I were lucky enough to be invited to tag along with PJMacNZ, Haydn.Seek and Etherlord Clan on a day trip around the Wairarapa.
We knew it was going to be a long day, but we were hopeful that we would get to find quite a few caches along the way, especially of the Mystery variety which we decided to concentrate mainly on getting.
The weather was kind to us, meaning we were able to spend time out of the car finding the caches and making running repairs to quite a few of them, mainly due to waterlogged log sheets and damaged plastic bags. Anyone finding these caches next in a good condition have EC and HS to thank for providing the requisite items.
My apologies for the generic log entry here, but the volume of caches found today makes it the best way to get everything done. With a small few exceptions, most of the caches were a relatively straightforward find, and in every case the logsheet was signed as Team PHETT for all 5 of us before the cache was replaced exactly where found.
Thank you for placing this cache, and giving us the excuse to have a grand day out.

Cache number 9 of 56 (find number 7 of 50 for me) on a road trip from Palmerston North to Masterton (via Pongaroa) with some like-minded individuals collectively know as Geocachers!
We drove up the Pahiatua Track and ascended into the clouds, and then it was clear for the rest of the trip until we returned back over the Track.
There is only just enough of the host left to shield the container.
Quick find. Thanks

this left us powerless for a while! until we found the very small low funny shaped stump of what was the bush!
We left fairly early and headed for skindo land - route 52 -or a part of it - making use of the remaining summer's drier conditions etc . We were amazed at the effects of the storm /flooding just over a week ago on the road and surrounding area and the many wash outs slips etc and we took some photos of this which i will log also. despite leaving early we still had only got as far as the waihi falls for lunch as we detoured a little and went for the lovely walk through the small reserve at mangatoro to see the giant trees there. we replaced several caches and log books that were very wet, with water proof paper.
thank you for this series of caches and the happy faces.

The last on my Route 52 Alfredton to Pongaroa muster. Great afternoon. Cheers Skindo
#5150. Its the longest day of the year and I am planning a big caching day. Spent the night in Hastings at the local holiday park and now doing a few Hastings caches before heading south via Route 52 to Masterton and then back to Wellington. The plan is to find at least 70-80 caches today so I can get my numbers up for the bulk find component of the DGSC challenge (1500 needed in a year). Part of a blitz to try and get an additional 200 caches found by Boxing Day. I have done 82 in past 2 days driving from Auckland to Hawkes Bay. Heading south again and finally onto Route 52. Heading out of Pongaroa and parked here by the power station. Took a few minutes to find the cache as the main feature in the hint is no longer present and only past logs gave a real clue as to where it is placed. Signed and returned as found. Thanks for hiding the cache here skindo.
We set out today on an expedition to the Wairarapa to focus mainly on collecting a section of the Route 52 series of caches. We left Palmerston North about 9am and headed to Dannevirke and on out to Weber for our first cache. Then it was caching along Route 52, lunch at Pongaroa, more caching to Afredton, Eketahuna and finally back to Palmy, getting there about 5.15pm. It was a fine day for geocaching, but very hot for such a lot of travelling - the air-con was a blessing.
It was easy enough to see where the cache was, but it had been wedged in too tightly and was very difficult to extract. The problem is there is very little place left to hide it now - not even much of a stump. We re-hid it as best we could and covered it with some of the dry grass there. TFTC

Did you know that planning has started for a Mega Event in Wellington in 2018? Check out the details on the [Wellington Event NZ (WENZ) Website](https://sites.google.com/site/wenzgeo2018/home) or visit the event's page on [FaceBook](https://www.facebook.com/groups/590545297801072/).
Thanks to the Cache Owner who has gone to the trouble of creating this cache, determining the coordinates and then averaging them to make sure they are accurate, placing the cache and registering it online for our enjoyment. Without Cache Owners doing their bit, there wouldn't be a fun hobby that we all love - so again a big THANK YOU. For our bit, all we need to do is find and log the cache that was carefully placed for our personal enjoyment. As we log it we should consider that the Cache Owner also needs to maintain it - when the log sheet fills up, they must replace it. When the container becomes full of water, they need to empty it. When the container is broken, they need to repair it. When it goes missing they need to find or replace it. Well..... the great news is we can do our bit too - make sure your log doesn't take an entire page - just a name and date. If full of water, empty and dry the cache as best as possible. Be careful when handling the cache and make sure you replace it where you found it. If it has a bag, seal it. Just remember - the Cache Owner showed respect to you by placing the cache - please respect them and fellow cachers that follow you by being careful with the cache. And if you have a spare log sheet and the cache you are at needs one, please leave it behind. Finally, if the cache does need maintenance, please let the Cache Owner know - you can log a Maintenance Log or you can drop a line to the Cache Owner. Above all - have fun and remember the Geocaching Code.

On a caching foray with EthNZ into the Wairarapa today - No 38 in the race to 50 in a day, car, mind, body and phone battery willing! "It's worse than that, He's Dead Jim" to continue the analogy from EthNZ. TFTC.
Off for a trip to Masterton from Hastings with our main aim being the the 52 on 52. In the end it took us a little over 8 hours with only two of the series that we didnt find, and picking up na few off the trail as we went. Although most were in good condition there were some that were wet and some that were just mushy logs impossible to write on. TFTC
Today was another nice day for our holiday trip in new zealand were we of course also found some caches along the way.
Today we took a trip from wellington to napier.
This is one of them. thank you for maintaining this cache.
we also did a lot of cache of 52 on 52. lot of these caches needed maintenance (most of them very wet)

Morning drizzle has turned to sunshine The hint object is now reduced to almost ground level but glad to say the container is still tucked away there. Thanks skindo.
Driving from Hastings to Masterton today. Route 52 seemed to be well signposted - find next closest!
It was dark, wet and cold by the time we reached this cache, therefore it was our last for the day. We managed 27 out of the series for the afternoon. Thanks for the work involved in setting this up. Now I must set a date to complete the southern 1/2 . . . . .
Love it when I spot the hiding place from across the road. cheers from casa del hince TFTC

125 Mission summary:
SpudNZ, Hunterhillson, AtomsNZ and Tommygun9 (me) (we logged ourselves as "TEAM SHATner" to save space and time) decided to set off for a caching mission to gather a heap of caches in the Wairarapa on a Wednesday. Noting that the weather was going to be good we set off from Palmy a little after 0600 and grabbed a few caches in the dark and morning light before (having a pie and) setting off south down Route 52. We had a couple of zig and/or zags south and got to Masterton in the dark of the moonless evening. Two of our party broke through the 1000 cache mark while I managed a day of 125 finds. We got back to Palmy very late cold, tired and hungry and know that, despite the uncharacteristically fine weather, summer is definitely the better time of year for long caching missions. Thanks to the local hiders for all their caches.

Cache no.42 for the day. T f T c skindo.
Logged as team SHATner - (SpudNZ, Hunterhillson, AtomsNZ, Tommygun9) Spent the day caching out in and around the Mighty Manawatu, the Wild Wairapapa and the Bay of Hawkes, in the hope of clocking up +100 caches. As well as seeing some of the best scenic views rural NZ has to offer, we also came across a few stray sheep, a couple of rabbits, Farmer Joe, the Ram gang, some shifty goats, Farmer Dave, a pie, a cop, Farmer Ned and Farmer Ted, diggers, mud, rain, sun, fog, Farmer Jane and her trusty farm dog.. And even a few caches!

In the wee hours of 20 May 15, Tommygun9, Atomsnz, Hunterhillson and myself formed an elite squad for a daring raid into Skindo land. Our codename; Team SHAT-ner.
We would be operating deep behind enemy lines, often out of contact range from Hotel Quebec, limited supplies and no chance of rescue, should we need one. We were horrendously out numbered. I’ve heard rumours that it was close to 300 to one.
Our mission; covertly kill off as many insurgents as we could and return home alive. We had all set personal goals for the mission; mine was to crack the 120 mark. Although, I had recently learnt that another member of our squad from yesteryear had a tally of 133. Perhaps I need to re-evaluate my goal.
Our insertion point was the North entry to Route 52, where we soon realised that the insurgents were coming thick and fast. We had to fight for every inch down that road. After 10 hrs of battling insurgents at every turn, we eventually reached our Southern most point, the insurgent stronghold of Masterton. It was the “home straight” from here. We blasted our way North as fast we could. Sporadically shooting insurgents from our windows as we went. The road was blocked near Mount Bruce so we had to make a detour back towards Masterton and take some of the back roads. I hope this wasn’t a trap. We eventually made it back over the hill to safety. I don’t think we were followed.
We did notice a few spotters located down the back roads that we didn’t clear. No doubt, they’ll relay any information back to their Supreme Leader and we’ll see reinforcements taking up defensive positions around the country side on the satellite imagery we receive.
Weeks of prior planning and INTEL gathering meant a smooth and successful mission was carried out. Against the odds, we returned home well after dark, safe and sound after a hard days work.
Some numbers for the mission:
620 km’s covered,
16.5 hrs of driving,
132 insurgents killed; of which 118 blindly follow Supreme Leader Skindo.
116 were killed on site
16 were questioned before being put in front of the firing squad.
7 evaded us.
For acts of bravery above and beyond the call of duty. In which I successfully carried out a raid into enemy territory and killed 120 hostiles or more, I am awarded the Ruby Badge. I also received various other badge upgrades as well.
A quick find made by the team here. Signed as Team SHAT-ner
Thanks for the cache and the smiley.

After hearing that Tommygun9, SpudNZ and Hunterhillson were planning a mission to Skindoland to knock off some caches out there I decided that I couldn't possibly be left behind to go to work for the day while they had all the fun -so I offered my expertise in solving Skindo puzzles in exchange for a seat in the vehicle. Turns out I only ended up having to solve a couple but gained a seat anyway.
Starting out well before the crack of dawn, my hope for the day was to crack 1,000 caches and under the cover of darkness I found my 1,000th cache at around 8.30pm. After coming across a major accident on state highway 2 our route home was greatly expanded and it was close to 11pm before we finally made it back to civilization and a well deserved dinner.
Thanks to all the cache owners for the caches we found today

Find number twenty one today on an afternoon adventure up highway 52 on way to Napier. Quick find today. Thanks for the cache.
Road trip from Eketahuna to Dannevirke trying to get our numbers up. Perfect weather for the 1st of January 2015 to go caching. TFTC - left calling card instead of signing log to speed the day up a bit.
Boxing Day trip through to Masterton the long way to grab a few smiles! Thanks for setting these up. Very nice weather for us...TFTC
Sunday and tackling one of these interminable backcountry routes. This time, Waipuk to Porangahau to Pirongia to Eketahuna.
This being #36 after departing Waipuk.
Pleased that P2P #2 was in situ, having DNF'd P2P #1 a couple of days ago.
Cache find was straightforward; log signed, safely re-hidden.
TFTC found with team cacher Sweet P too

EEEEWWWW slaters were fullying covering the cache, there was no way I was grabbing this one - after slaters shaken off we managed to log and give the slaters back there home
well had planned this caching to kick off at 10 this morning but hubby left the lights on in the car overnight and the battery was flat as a pancake this morning.
we had waiting for setucurst to turn up so we were able to cache a new road together, we followed in suit racing to see who could find the cache first
So once we sorted that we were on our way to hopefully get 33 odd caches and pick up caches I missed on the last run through here, where there wasnt a place to stop safely with just me.
Came across another cacher from Nelson had a little chat over a cache and carried on.
I have added my card to all and handmade swag to the ones that I could fit something into, there were a nice range of container sizes, and as the rain stayed away they were easy grabs (even if some were for a second time hunting.
Thanks for the cache, sorry this is a past and copy

Headed out on the first flight to Wellington Saturday morning with FMZ and Lostcourse. Relocating a vehicle back to Auckland meant we had a big caching road trip ahead of us...! We headed back through the Wairarapa towards Napier, clocking up the numbers through skindo land. Sorry for the copy/paste log as its now all abit of a blur having cached for 36 hours with only a few short naps in between. Enjoyed the drive through these rough and winding gravel roads and saw alot of interesting sights.
36 hours, 1,200km, & 315 finds made for an epic adventure! Many thanks for the cache and the perfect excuse to make a weekend of it!

Took the first flight down to Wellington on Saturday for a fly-down-drive-back-caching weekend with mike-miss and FMZ - basically a caching raid across the North Island.Team FML! for the win! We headed out of Wellington making a beeline for the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay before venturing back to Auckland. We headed through a bunch of interesting winding back roads and saw a lot of beautiful sights and historic spots that only geocaching could have bought us too. We shared the duties around and took a few micro naps when ever prudent. Saturday was my biggest caching day ever, and this February, is easily my biggest month ever.
Arrived in Pongaroa at about 3am Sunday morning. Grabbed an hours nap here before heading onto cache on the former state highway 52. Quick find here. Cheers for the cache placement!

Headed down to Wellington for a fly-down-drive-back-caching weekend with mike-miss and Lostcourse - basically a caching binge drive back to Auckland, caching under the moniker "Team F.M.L." We headed out of Wellington as quickly as possible to get some serious caching done in the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay before heading back to Auckland. Apologies for the copy/paste log, but we found >310 caches in 36 hours and for many it's hard to remember specific details. We headed through a bunch of interesting winding back roads and saw a lot of beautiful sights and historic spots. We shared the driving and stopped for about an hour to catch some shut eye in Pongaroa before continuing, caching all the way. Saturday was my biggest caching day ever, and this Feb, after just the first 36 hours, is already my biggest month ever. TFTC!!!
A day caching with the Seagnoid and Bright_Jun after Pongaroa Picnic Event at Four Mile Bush Reserve in Skindoland. Quick find. Thanks for the cache.
Planned a huge day caching. Left at around 6.30 and started heading to pongaroa to the event. 40 caches on the way there then realized we couldnt do the rest we planned or we would be late. So headed a different way. After the Lunch we had another huge list of caches to get but got to pongaroa and petrol station wasnt open, 1 1/2 hours to masterton or 45 mins to pahiatua or dannivirke....hmmm that stuffs that plan up, should have thought about that earlier opps. So headed straight back to dannivirke and missed out a huge chunk of our planned trip. Thanks for a cache owners of all the ones we found along our trip.

[Green] Popmac rings me up, wanting to do a raid on Skindoland. We bring in super-new cacher Bright_Jun and sneak in under the cover of darkness. We left Palmy at 6am, attacked the natives of Skindoland with a relentless assault lasting 15 hours (including an hour off for tea and crumpets at the Pongaroa Picnic Event), travelling over 450km. We even had spare petrol in the boot, because there were no shops where we went. We defeated over 90 of the little blighters, not even a decimation. I bet the lords of Skindoland won't even notice.
Hey! Back at last on Highway 52. I wasn't paying attention and driver Popmac went straight past. He blames me, just because I was navigating. And wasn't. Sigh.

We spent 3 days traveling on SH52 with the caravan. Thanks to Skindo's cache placement, we were able to stop at most caches. Nice hide
Out and about on a cache raid of skindoland. Glad we finally got the opportunity to complete the local powertrails TFTC.

Most Christmas holidays involve a road trip of some description and this year is no exception. Today we left Napier and headed to Wellington, taking Route 52 and picking up the caches along the way. TFTC!

Travelling from Rotorua to Masterton and at first unsure what way to travel. Decided in the end to go do the 52 on 52 as they seemed like a good choice on a quieter road. Enjoyed the drive, hunt and finds and despite parking being a small problem near some of the caches the road was very quiet and nothing was worrysome in the end. A lot of logs damp and some wet but mostly writable. Good effort in placing these.

Just as Morgan Ed was starting to prove too powerful in our PSR game, we both drew a blank here, 1 point to Skindo.

Mega Weekend
It all started about a month ago when Cats&Dragons brought up the idea of heading down the line to collect 350+ caches. We both had targets that we wanted to meet before attending the NZ Mega. Plans and locations were drawn up and puzzles were begun to be solved. It took me a while to get my head around a few of the puzzles and with the help of a cacher I was soon on a roll.
The weekend finally came and we departed Hamilton at 6pm on a Friday night. 3days, 2,000km, & 11hrs sleep, later 472 caches collected. Thanks to all those who's caches I found especially Skindo with a huge number laid.

A MEGA Adventure
Both Nova Lightning and myself had set ourselves caching targets that we were hoping to meet in time for the NZMEGA in a few weeks. So with a plan in progress and fuel in the tank away we set.
Departed home at 6pm Friday, returned home 3.30pm Monday, 7 hours sleep approx 470 caches and a great adventure.
Thanks to all those that have placed caches especially Skindo as I think we gave his caches a bit of a nudge
Thanks for a great weekend of Caching and Bull.

Nice simple find, but cache a bit too small for the TB I had hoped to be able to leave in it. Never mind, TFTC.

The second noisy cache for the day. The sheep don't seem to mind though.
I have since seen there are a few close by caches that I could have found. However, I had earlier made my mind up that it was only the Route 52 caches today and I was not to be distracted by others. However, it's good to know I can return one day for a trip in the opposite direction and still search for a good number of caches without deviating too far from the Route if I choose not to.

I love taking the back road like this. A day like today with magnificent weather was made for geocaching. First half I did some time ago and today the other half from Weber to Masterton was done. TFTC!
I don't usually like to write cut / paste / template logs for caches but I do make the odd exception for 'power' trails. The main aim for my caching day today was to get from Masterton to Waipukurau via Route 52 picking up as many of the caches along the way as I could. All in all it was a great days caching and taking the back road like this really made a pleasant change from charging along main highways. Looks like a few other interesting caches in this area too. TFTC, Biggles.
Day 5 of the trip home to Christchurch, Napier-Martinborough. Came down via route 52, a great way to see some back country roads. A very quiet road and some small communities. Thanks Skindo for bringing us this way. 50/52 for the trail. Plus some extras!
#4618. Easy to spot the general area of these Power To the People hides from some way off. TFTC.
Good parking by GZ (though on this road, it wasn't really a problem as we saw very few vehicles during our drives).
TFTC.

This cache was found as part of my epic as move down south to Christchurch from Auckland - A drive that involved around 3,000km, 350 caches, 14 days, and a bit of a detour through East Cape, Gisbourne, Napier/Hastings, some back roads in the Wairarapa, Cape Pallisier and Nelson/Tasman as well as every CANZ cache along the way that I was still missing. (Hence my excuse for the not as interesting log as I usually try to make mine.) But thanks to every awesome amazing as cacher that placed caches along these roads, you made my trip awesome, and very cache happy!
I had specially planned the move to involve route 52... and it was a great day! - I learnt how to pass sheep on the road, I met some interesting locals, and wow the number of washouts on the road! Thanks so much for putting these caches out here... definitely helped me towards the 500+ in a month finding challange! - (I am still to get the official count, but I think december ended up with about 510 geocaches - of which probably like almost 150 were skindo caches )
TFTC!!

Many thanks for your great series of caches along Route 52. We thoroughly enjoyed our journey and the many caches we found along the way. TFTC drawp
Decided to take the scenic route back to Wellington and collect those in the series that I didn't already have. Enjoyed the beautiful scenery and the picturesque local settlements - TFTC and series.
