It has been our aim to come up Mount Ngungun for quite some time and with #1500 fast approaching, it was decided today would be the day Big Grin
After a lovely walk up the mountain this morning with friends, it was time to carefully head down to see if we could nab this one. We were careful to stay on the rocks and not walk on the fauna, as we were aware why this one had been archived Sad
We all made the find quickly and passed the new log around for signing (Thanks to the MEG group that were here yesterday for replacing the container and log Smile)
Thanks JohnJohn for placing his cache, it is truly a magical place Big Grin

Out with a group today and this was the bonus cache. This really is a great location and has beautiful views. Enjoyed the walk up the mountain with friends today. Thanks JohnJohn for placing this cache. It is still bringing pleasure to its finders.

MEG#7 Part 2-the hard stuff!
Finally we get to the challenging stuff. After a few easier caches we took on a climb worthy of sweat, with a few easier ones thrown in!

WOW! What a hike! I loved it! Once again I can't believe the places Mr Prime takes me to. Places that have been so close t where I have lived my whole life and never been to. This place, and the views, are second to none ....simply stunning. It is not hard to inkstand why this is so important to the aboriginal dreamtime.
After reaching the top and catching my breath I followed the fearless leader over and down the rock face towards GZ. Prime was prepared for a little cache maintenance, and a surprising gift was left with an even more surprising note to Mr P!

Thanks for archiving this one JohnJohn. We took care not to disrupt the flora. Another fave Pt!

I will be back for sure.

This is my first MEG#7, Razz the day promised to be a day of adventure. Having checked out the list of caches to be done.
[|)] Started the day with a 0500 rise, with the view to be away at 0600, well the best laid plans can always be bent a little, Sad on the road at 0615, hope all the radars have been turned off Big Grin.
SadArrived at 0740 just as the crew were about to head off to find the first one.

Having climbed this Mountain for the Earth Cache Razz, and time spent at the top, admiring the the excellent views and catching my breath. I just had to find this Big Grin.
Found a suitable track from the saddle down, keeping in mind the reason for the achieve [^], as I arrived the others were leaving, story of my life.
Log signed, pathtag left

MEG#7: What is MEG? Amongst a few 2013 GEOGoals I've set myself, one I have dubbed Mission Empty Glass (MEG for short). This involves tackling all caches across an area I've defined loosely as 'The Glasshouse Mountains'. Every multi, every micro, every mystery, every mountain and everything in between. This, the seventh group outing, was focussed around the centre of the area and celebrates passing the halfway mark. For the traditional pre-start coffee the MEG contingent met up in Beerwah and the day got underway. After caching all morning, with one big and a couple smaller mountains already under our belts, the group dynamics changed for the afternoon run, and included Lady Sim and Swellerfungus, plus two part-muggle friends, Nyssaflutterby, Captain Terror, Crew153, Bulldozer71, and Sweet'n'Sour.

After conquering the mount, we set about rescuing this container that had become damaged, and ensuring that it will live on for a while longer still. With due care for the surrounding environment (as always, but with special care here) we made the find, wrote the log and escaped the area around the side.

Thanks for placing this cache, John. Left in good condition.

After completing the nearby earth cache it was decided that a group assault to put a log in this cache would not be the responsible thing to do so we sent off a couple of volunteers to take the last steps to get to the cache and make a group log for us all.

This is my favourite for the month! A beautiful day has brought out many muggles and one cacher to enjoy this mountain. Despite recent fires in the lowlands the views were clear. A bit of a wind has helped.
This old cache is still worth finding but tread carefully so as not to disturb the rare grasses. Thanks JohnJohn for placing this early cache!

Out on a rebel MEG day. Up doing the earth cache with friends. Thanks to Crew153 for the co-ords to find this one. A short stroll from the top to make this a smiley Smile

Today there is a souvenir on offer for finding a cache. Cool

Also P' has a MEG event happening. But a couple of us, Russelz, IolantheK, teamDFL, T-Tech and myself, have found the caches he is planning on going to today. So we decided to group up and tackle a couple of others. Smile

This cache was one I particularly wanted to do as I used to teach rock climbing and came up here at least once a month for a couple of years. So now I am walking up here without getting paid. WT???? Surprised I had heard this one was still here and with a little info from another cachers we had the co-ords and went for a stroll. There are a few tracks through the shrubs and we stayed on those. Big Grin The co-ords were spot on and we had a quick find. Smile Due to no maintenance this cache is in a bad way...but I do know of some others heading this way in about a month so I'll let them know what to bring.

There has been some serious track work completed since I was last up here. The track now goes above the lower cliffs and bypasses the cave gully. There is lots of re-vegetation work happen in the gully. [^] Awesome. Cool

Even the top track that went up the water washout (or was that the other way around) is now closed for re-vegetation work and the new track goes a little further north before bending back around to the summit. Cool

Well worth the walk to see the 'new' Ngunngun. Big Grin

Thanks for the cache.

Out and about on the Glasshouse Mountains for a crazy day with T-Tech, teamdfl, Brother Colin and ruzzelz Big Grin We were up at the summit of Mt Ngungun and knew of this very old archived cache, but none of us had remembered to bring the co-ords Twisted Not to worry, a quick call to a friend gave us what we needed, and we all headed off to track it down. Such a beautiful area here, and we were all careful to stick to the rocks and not damage the flora [^] The cache was a quick find, and I'm very pleased to grab this one as it fills in another month on my Jasmer Challenge grid. TFTC, JohnJohn.

Up from Brisbane caching around the Glass House mountains with IolantheK, teamdfl, ruzzelz, and Brother Colin [^]
Made our way up the newish QPWS highway track to the top of Ngungun for some great views [^]
Someone mentioned that there was a cache to the north but we didn't have the co-ords for it. A quick call to Crew153 and we were off to find this rather old cache [^]
The cache is soaked and in poor condition Twisted We did what we could help the log book to dry via the sun over time [^] Certainly I haven't seen a cache with such an early GC number as this Smile

=) Up for a Mt.Ngungun walk today with Brightskies and heard mention of this Archived cache, A bit of research into TeamBenders profile and I had a set of coords for the cache, we had just made our way down from the summit and I b-lined straight to the GZ , I think I took an awkward way in with a bit of light shrubbery to navigate through, found the cache no problem with the broken container and contents in great condition which was hard to believe .... the logbook on the other hand was double bagged but soaking wet and I had to sign the log with an indent as the ink wouldnt work on the wet paper , very much still a cache that is there and willing to be found and very worth grabbing the Trad while doing the earthcache at the same time , shame this one was Archived really, great spot and hide and a very rewarding one TFTC =)

11-Feb-12
We decided to challenge ourselves today by climbing Ngungun. When we arrived at the parking area a young lady rushed up to us and said that her car had been broken into and the glass of the side window had been shattered and her handbag, wallet and mobile phone had been taken. Off they went to the police. Surprised We started the climb. I had been up here twice before this several years ago and it has always been a challenge for me especially the rock wall and getting to the top. [^] It was a hot and humid day but with a lovely breeze intermittently blowing to cool us. The butterflies were everywhere and landed on us a few times. We were very careful going to this cache only stepping on rock so the flora was very safe. We were very happy to visit this cache which has existed since 2001. [^] I wished I knew about caching then as the last 12 months have been very enjoyable caching. The trip back down the mountain left us with a feeling of achievement. TNLN TFTC Thanks JohnJohn for bringing us back to the beauty and awe of this place

We set out on an expedition today to achieve 1400 finds, only problem was that we had 1398 and needed to find another cache first… We had decided that the earthcache on the summit was to be 1400, so Jason said lets go find the archived one too (I was not going to argue as that would be easier than climbing another mountain!) [^]

What a great day for it, I have had the flu and our baby had kept me awake for most of the night! Doh - why do I agree to crazy things when I am sleep deprived [?]

After stalking some other cachers logs we found this one, downloaded to the GPS and we were off. Along the track we went, nice we were thinking until suddenly we realised that our nice little stroll had come to an abrupt end! Oh did I happen to mention that we were carrying a 6mth old, and oh, did I happen to mention that it was sooo humid…[xx(]

After huffing and puffing all the way to the top we pulled out the GPS to see how far and we both looked at each other? What its down there? After grabbing our breath and feeding the baby we headed back down the hill in search of the oldest cache we have found thus far [:o]

The treasure was found very easily after a short 180m walk from the top along the rocky outcrop, just waiting to be rescued. We were so excited to find it, We removed the rocks to find the ageing container full of goodies and a logbook that was an interesting read. The contents were completely dry and log book in excellent condition Big Grin

Its a shame that this cache has been archived as it is so old and in a great location. I would definitely given it one of our favourite points. Please note that no flora has been disturbed on our expedition to this cache and we really couldn't see how and vegetation could be disturbed Smile

After sitting reading the log book for about 30 mins we continued on up to the summit for some pics of the surrounding Glasshouse Mountains, thanks John for bringing us here and helping us out to achieve our 1400th find CoolCoolCool

This one has been archived for a while now, but we couldn't resist after climbing all the way up there (carrying the 6month old) to get the Earthcache at the summit [xx(]
After spending some time at the top, enjoying the view with a young couple who thought we were crazy for carrying a child up, we started back down and then off the other side towards GZ Surprised. The first bit was quite steep (and slippery after all the rain), but then it levelled out to a gentle walk [^]
We were well aware of why this one was archived, so we went out of our way wherever possible to avoid treading on any flora at all. Just a matter of sticking to the rock Wink. Before long, we spotted a very suspect pile of rocks, and with much jubilation, we opened the oldest cache we have found so far (March 01 Surprised)
It was dry, still has heaps of swag, and even has the original log sheets .. which we sat and read [^]. It was great to read the lengthy old logs, where people actually wrote about their experience in the book … some take up more than a page Smile. It rarely happens these days.
[^] ..Chuffed as .. [^], we gingerly made our way back to the top, only to have make the trek down that bloody steep hill again Razz. Boy, am i going to sleep well tonight [xx(]
Thanks for placing this cache here JohnJohn, a magical place indeed [^][^][^]. TNLN TFTC

I have archived the cache. The cache was in an area that has fragile flora and my hope is that less people will meander off the track.

“The vegetation communities in the park sections are fragile because the peaks are small isolates with steep terrain and easily eroded soils… In particular the rocky heathlands on the summits are being degraded by visitors walking over them. This seriously affects herbaceous species and some shallow-rooted perennials. The heaths’ shallow, skeletal soils make it difficult or impossible for plants to recolonise after trampling or fire.”

“Significant species in Mt Ngungun’s rocky pavement community are threatened by trampling. These include Calyrix tetragona, Arundinella Montana and Micraira subulifalia.”

(The above two quotes are copied from Department of Environment.(2009), Glass House Mountains National Park management plan.) http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/parks_and_forests/managing_parks_and_forests/management_plans_and_strategies/pdf/glass-house-mountains-national-park.pdf

Found with the rest of the Brisbane gang after doing the earth cache. I loved the trees in this area, well worth the walk to find this. TFTC

An additional challenge after climbing the mountain with the rest of the MCBC. Had been well and truly found by the time I'd gingerly made my way down the slope. Loved the red trees and the groovy grasses endemic to the area.

Thanks for the cache John. Cheers, svn07

Found with TassieGirl13 and everyone else who came along on our trip up here today.
After a good walk up the do the earthcache we all popped over the edge to grab this one.
All hands converged and the cache was located pretty quick.
A top spot with some great views, TFTC.

As part of a little geo-gathering today, we tackled the mountain. After a good fun hike up the hill, took in some views before moving on to grab this cache. Brilliant day today and the views were amazing. TFTC

At the summit, a group of cachers gatherred for the earthcache and asked a muggle to take a group shot of us at the peak... [^] Then, we dropped off the edge and wanderred across the flat, only to dissappear behing the bushes out of sight... Surprised Five minutes later, the group reappear and make their way up to the summit in order to find their way back down the mountain... Wink I would love to know what the muggle was thinking as we just "did our thing"... Big Grin

Thanks for the additional challenge after "that climb" JohnJohn.

It's always good to find a cache such as this, especially when it's been there for so long. Took a path in to minimise damage, and found the cache in short order. Nice, safe hide, and no risk of being seen by the numerous muggles at the summit. Good work! TFTC.

05-Jul-10
After picking up the nearby Earthcache, we clambered down the rocks and across the plateau toward this cache, trying ever so hard not to stand on any of the rare mat grass that grows up here. I hope we didn't do too much damage, and I was glad there were no rangers around to tell us to get out of the Special Protection Area and stay on trail like the sign at the bottom tells us to. Found it, signed it, and got out of there as fast as we could. Cache lid is cracked and the outer cover no longer zips up, but the contents were still fine. TFTC. ='.'=

Found in the company of La Kedi, I was not to sure about the approach on this one but between us we got there in the end, I really think that this cache is in an unsuitable spot as We noted on the main sign not to go off track due to the rare mat grass in the area, we tried to keep to the rocks to lesson our impact to the area, I feel thee were plenty of spots at the side of the track where a cache could be placed with out impact to the area. i did however enjoy the view up here.

Great climb with great views from the top to go with an easy cache. Amazed to find a young woman at the top with her dog, a black labrador. Apparently the dog loves these steep walks.
Lots of muggles around at the top but as the cache is well out of the way it was no problem to be a bit discrete. However, a couple did ask me what I had climbed down the other side for. The answer of "treasure" resulted in funny looks but no more questions.

Took the 3yr old for his first Mountain climb with a cache as a reward. I had "north up" which meant I spent some time scratching me head as to where the cache could be since I was now on the edge of a precipice! Once I realized my mistake it was soon had.

TNLN, needs a freshen up I think.

Cheers

I would rate this cache as one of the best I've done yet.
Loved the hike to the top but the GPS said that the cache was down there. That surprised me and I rechecked the co-ords.
There was going to be only one way to know for sure if the GPS was right or not.
It was correct.
On the way back down the very steep section of the track we had to help an injured hiker back to the base. It made me realise how easy it is to come unstuck in this type of terrain.
Thanks for taking me up here.

What was I thinking? I climbed up to find this cache and I still hadn’t regained my composure after Mt Beerburrum. As always, though, it was a worthwhile effort. The view is beautiful, but somewhat changed from my last visit over 15 years ago before geocaching was invented. Geonephew ‘Bedmaker’ and I used to abseil off the southern face. It’s only 40 metres, but when the wind blows, it’s a daunting descent. There seems to be more housing estate than pineapple farms now. Progress I suppose. Sad. Rescued a lizard from the cache bag, signed the log, TN/LN and took some photos like everyone else has done. It's an inspiring place.

Good walk and great views. Took the TB (on it's way to "Hoter" climates) and left a one Riyal note.

21-Nov-07
We got within 168 metres and turned back. There didn't appear to be a trail to the cache and as it looked like it might rain we wanted to be back down the hill before it got wet and slippery.

Probably the best view I have seen in ages. It was quite something to see the rain showers blowing north along the coast, only to realise that if we didn't hurry up and get down the mounatin that we would be caught up in them! There were a few muggles around on the top of the mountain (a youth group of some sort) but they quickly left us alone so we could get on with the real business of geocaching. Cache was found quite easily. TNLN. TFTC.

Found after a little walk up the mountain. I was thinking this was going to be a lot tougher but I loved the views. The effort is well worth it and in the company of the assault planner "Ruzzlz" and Brian from Sunshine Toledo it couldn't be any better. After spending lots of time on top I think now I am motivated to do "GORILLA". I also took Supercacher geocoin from the cache to move on. Cheers TheNanks

Out for a mini Geotrek with Mr. THENANKS and Sunshine Toledo we found ourselves up to the top in quick time. We engaged in lots of happy snapping as the views in the early morning sunlight were splendid.Big Grin

Moved on to the lower level for the cache and then back to the top where a much keener climber than us was setting up ropes for the morning. Given the numbers of other climbers we saw on the way back down there must have been a waiting list to jump off this mountain today.

Out: Mouse toy?

That nearby Gorilla is not looking any friendlier from this angle.Surprised

Found by Sunshine Toledo at 7:15am in the company of THE NANKS(David) and ruzzelz. After an early start and a rush for the top we got the view of the early morning over The Glasshouse Group of mountains. What a view!!! 360 degree view of pineapples, orchards and forests and the coast to the east. A great way to spend a morning. Oh! the cache, yes it was just a little further but on the lower level and found easily. In: stamp Out: keyring. TFTC

Yeah, I finally got around to climbing this peak. It is the first time I've climbed up here and I must say, wow what a great stroll and great views Big Grin
The placement of the cache across the summit plateau was a good excuse for a bit of exploration instead of just a climb too Smile
Cache is in good condition and easy to find.
I got an early start on this one as the day was going to be a scorcher. Nice cooling breezes on the summit ridge though Razz

Does anyone know what maintenence needs to be done here? I will be heading up this Sunday and will fix what's needed.

30-Aug-06
The cache is not really in need of maintenance though a little TLC wouldn't go astray as this is a great cache.

The outer container is a million years old but it still does the job, in fact, the zipper still works which is amazing.

From memory, the insides of the cache are in pretty good shape but quite old.

The maintenance request was made a little while ago by someone who couldn't find it and as a result asumed it missing.

I think it takes the owner or a reviewer to remove the flag now - not sure. Note that the owner hasn't visited the site for 6 or 8 months.

If you like, i would suggest taking a new log book and a couple of pencils, a few swaps and ziplock bags.

Cheers and enjoy this one - it's a ripper!

Sent the Birthday Boy off to find this one first. No problem! Lovely day, loads of Muggles but the cache is out of sight so a great spot. TFTH

Some funky daylight saving / twilight zone stuff happened with the alarm clock this morning.

PLAN: Set the alarm for four, up the top of the mountain to see the sun rise.

Reality: Alarm went off. Out of bed, wake (the 2 intrepid) GeoKids and get them moving. Shower. Dressed. Coffee. Ready to go .... time check - 03:35!!!! Aaaaaarggggggg - back to clock control 101!!!

We certainly arrived before the sun and made our way to the top. We watched the sun rise and it was wonderful.

As it became light, we ambled down to find the cache and took plenty of time to admire the very special flora in this place.

A really wonderful cache - thank you !

We took a lizard and the geocoin and left a car and a GeoLutin.

Edit - Wrong Date

Went up and found the original cache there again. Must have been hiding on me. Re-added my small cache back into this main one. All looks good and intact. Zipper on bag getting a bit dodgy but.

Everybody loved this spot especially the caves!Took some great shots but no cache camera? This was our third hill climb so when we hit the summit, everyone just laid across the rocks like fat lizards. Heaps of muggles, at one stage im sure someone sang out " number 26 your view is ready !"
Fantastic, good job, you'd da guys!

SmileSmileTook the kids up again. We found both caches, one in a plastic bag (not far from the original cache) , and the original in the now faded red lunch container. Both were in good condition and well hidden under a pyramid of rocks.

Was good to climb the mountain, but we picked the worst time of day to do it. Tough climb, but rewarding views. Took Lion Pants TB, left Rubber Stamp TB.

Wow someone described this one as 'just a steep walking track', well I would describe it quite differently! Geonanna & Geopa made it to the top after a gruelling climb and shrieking when a brown snake slithered by! (that was geonanna). Quite frankly the only thing on our minds was reaching the bottom safely so we didn't really search for the cache. We met an Austrian tourist going up to the top and when we reached the bottom of the steep cliff approx. 100 students and teachers from Humpybong State School were eagerly awaiting their climb. We are glad we did it but certainly won't be returning!

Finally got around to doing this one after ... how many years?

The plan was for Citria and I to do either this one or the new one on Mt Beerwah. I've climbed all the Glasshouse Mountains in the past but hadn't located the original Beerwah one (probably muggled) or Gorilla on Tibrogargan so it was nice to post a find at last. The track up through the forest to Mt Ngun Ngun is much more thigh-friendly than it was ten years or more ago when I last came up this way. Smile

Great company, a pleasant climb, a humid but nice day and a good cache location. Despite the flying ants (which I'm still picking out of my ears), it's whetted my previously waning appetite for geocaching.

Thanks John.

Made the trek up to this cache with Manta. Quite a steamy day, although the breeze and view at the top made it worthwhile.... watching Manta pick flying ants out of his nose was an added bonus! Razz

Rode the MTB from Mooloolah, dumped the MTB at the base of the cliff, and walked up. (Easy for me!!).
Got to the top and the Kookaburras were laughing at me.!!
I've now climbed 2 mountains here so far - Beerwah & Ngungun. Took glasses, left lizard.

Walked back down to the MTB then, it was Coooooeeee down and onto Beerburrum for another workout.

Found at 14:45. We've been up here previously... back when we weren't caching and really enjoyed it, so have always been looking forward to coming back and finding this cache. We thought the cache would be elsewhere so were surprised at the final location, but enjoyed the extra climbing and walking.

The cache is still in really good condition... it's great to find an old cache doing so well (wow - over 4 years old).

Put in model racing car and Orlando Daphne Travel Bug and took out 50 cents.
