It was 2 years ago, and I was just about to hire a pair of snow shoes to go and get a newly published cache of Philipps that had a GC in it that you could only retrieve in winter.....and then it all went very pear shaped and I got a very fast plane ride to Melbourne.
So here I am 2 years later, with a pair of snow shoes in my hand and a full pack on my back , going off on another one of Philipps crazy ideas...........despite his best efforts, lets hope history doesn't repeat itself.
The hike up in the rain was quite cold and wet but Mark and I still managed some smiles and chats. Once we got to the hut, the tent was set up and we questioned our sanity for a while before getting changed into warm clothes.....things got better from there!
And there was Port........a couple of bottles.....nice and warm now!
At some stage during the evening, the rain turned to snow and we awoke in our igloo to a winter wonderland.
In the morning we eventually got our stuff together and everyone slowly made their way back down the big hill dreaming of hot food at the pub.
Well, long story short......Philipp didn't kill me again......and I learnt that spending up on good quality warm clothing and gear pays off big time!
I had a great time and it has whetted my appetite for more snow camping.
It was a great event that I really enjoyed..........well, except the bit when I was cold and wet.
A favourite, even though I can't award one.
(of course this just means he will try harder next time)

Notes from the weekend;
1/ ☂ Rain at altitude is crap.
2/ ❄ Snow now on the other hand is a whole different story.
3/ Dry bags are the best thing ever.
4/ Spare pair of dry gloves worth their weight in gold.
6/ Love my sleeping mat and bag.
7/ VCC members are a lot more adventurous than GC members
8/ On paper gumboots appear to be a good idea.
9/ Good people, good port, Alpine hut = excellent weekend.

Hypothetical favourite point from me
[teal]Merci beaucoup
Cheers

The winter weather in the Victorian High Country doesn't really like me. Thinking about it, I actually believe it doesn't like anyone. Imagine it to be the evil step-child of [enter your least favourite politician's name here ... ahh doesn't matter ... enter any politician's name]. You can try to forecast the behaviour but in the end it does what it want and that mostly ends up in a lot of tears.
So here we are again on the mountain:

Rain[/*]

+2°C[/*]

Zero Visibility[/*]

60 km/h Northerly Wind[/*]
That sounds like fun, doesn't it? For everyone who hasn't been to Alpine areas in the snow: plus degrees and rain means everything is going to be wet. Absolutely everything. As soon as it drops below 0°C life is nice and shiny again (Sugercoating and Rainbows) because everything is dry ... but that didn't happen. My mum always said there is no bad weather, there's just the wrong clothing. Unfortunately the right clothing in these circumstances not only comes with a significant price-tag but also a slight cut-back in comfort: Instead of wet and cold, you're only wet and warm.
Despite this sub-standard setting, 15 members of BWWC, VCC and Bogong Equipment made their way up the mountain and to the event. On that note "normal geocachers" weren't present and we should be glad nobody did a psych-evaluation upon our return to Harrietville.

Probably next time.
B2 officially unable to attend.
B1 will give it a go but a big day that day and might arrive at 7pm.
Will bring doona and snakes.
Looking forward to another night in the snow under snowflakes.
How cold could it be?
In order to avoid the terrors of hypothermia, frostbite and other unpleasentries, we organised an info night:
9th July - 18:00 - Clifton Hill (where the Rangers Anna & Philipp live)
Bring your gear and check if you have some spares so others don't have to hire/buy stuff.
Cheers
Ranger Philipp
We got a bunch of people signing up for this trip and there are multiple sheets/ trips / facebook events which add a bit to the confusion. Beside us the following two organisations running a trip at the same time:
Melbourne Uni Mountaineering Club:
The MUMC is doing their annual Midnight Ascent to the MUMC hut. They might come for a visit but this is unrelated to us.
More info at http://www.mumc.org.au/node/3919
Victorian Climbing Club:
The VCC is also running a snow camping trip. This isn't really a coincident
More info at http://www.vicclimb.org.au/location/events#332
The main hub for organising this WinterCamp event is a google spreadsheet > If you haven't filled in your data please do.
Also the BWWC is currently looking for a venue for an info session on snow camping prior to the trip.
On that note I'll leave you with a baby marmot picture which should give a smiling start towards the weekend.
Cheers
