A couple of options in this region today with this area being least affected by the snow - only a few inches deep in the open areas. Decided to do the Big Bush Loop ascending Duck Down. This was the last stop and down on the flats after an enjoyable bush walk. A short search once I found a way in and cache location was located. Name added to log and replaced cache in it's spot. All good here with location not affected by the snow. 9 from 11 today.

And, school holidays have rolled round again. We are up at the lake for a couple of days and after the walk to Whisky Falls yesterday, I have a shorter walk for myself today. A circuit of the skating rink loop.

Find 6 here after a couple lakeside. As I got closer, watching the metres count down I saw a DOC type sign off to the side, so headed over to that. It mentioned rifle sighting in area. Guess I will head back and follow the track round, and round and round the mound. Got down to about 70m so headed in. Straight to it too, before seeing the booze bottle nearby. Got the last needed number and headed back out. About to break out from the trees and heard voices so paused while they passed by and I rejoined the loop track.

Having 3 nights away alone up here at the Lake - looking forward to plenty of walks on all the fantastic paths around here.
Today is my last day - plan is to finish what I started up this road and nearby tracks before heading back to town.
I came at this one from the worst spot and ended up a bush bash.... and then once found and signed I made the easy descent with no bush bashing DOH..... My legs have a few geocaching scars on them now.

A pleasant ride around the lower tracks, picking up caches along the way.

Steep scramble up, but the natural steps helped. Stopped when I thought I must be close, and there it was at my feet.

Now its time to explore these mountain bike track. Parked up the Seagnoid mobile and started walking.
And another one snagged and tagged. Cheers

The Seagnoid has to move his new cache, which is way down past St Arnaud, so going along for the trip, with Ricardino in tow as well. There are some caches at St Arnaud, along a bike trail to explore, after business sorted.

Forgot to log this one on our trip to St Arnaud. A bit strange as I had added the clue as a personal note on the page, something I do while logging. And I remember writing a story about going the wrong way while tS and TBD went straight to it. They patiently waited for me to sort my s**t out, so this made it a rememberable cache also. Ok, logging it now after getting the heads up from TBD that I hadn’t. Thanks belts.

Got the offer from the Seagnoid to go for a trip down to St Arnaud a few days back so decided to take him up on it. Haven’t done much exploring around St Arnaud so here was a good chance. Weather played ball, and Taybee Dragon was coming too, so it was the three of us on this trip.
First up, the small matter of retrieving one of Tom’s newly planted caches to give it a new location. This was duly done, although the whole process took a little longer than expected. After that, off to St Arnaud. We didn’t pack the bikes but it was mainly caches in a bike park that we targeted, getting these by foot with the car ferrying us as close as possible to them. A few roadblocks, literally, with some locked gates that restricted how close we could get, and a bit of a time restriction too in that we needed to be back in time to host the GIFF later that evening. No worries in the end. We did our caching and still had time to stop in to get an ice cream and say hi to Karen at GC7V5ET. TFTC to all COs.

Nice day for a walk as the bike chain snapped 20 m into our planned ride. A bit of a climb and bush bash to GZ but well worth it for the lush green moss and manuka trees. Gets a FP from us.

Mrs Kiwimykl (aka NZDi) and I booked a holiday home at St Arnaud for a long weekend in which we hoped to do a few of the local day walks. Being new to geocaching we thought there might be a few in the area that we could pick up on our walks, so imagine the surprise I got when I checked the GC map of the area, it would take us a week to clear it.

So wouldn't you believe it, after a summer of drought, the weekend we go to the Lakes, the weather forecast is pants. We arrived on Friday morning to driving rain and blustery conditions... well it was like that the whole trip up from Blenheim. So we unpacked the car and had lunch then settled in to read books and magazines for the afternoon.

At about 3pm the weather cleared enough to consider venturing out, so we decided to take a mountain bike ride on the Teetotal flats and hopefully pick up a few caches that had been saved into c:geo. This was the 3rd of 6 we managed to get in three hours on the local tracks.

Going by the cache description, I didn't expect to find the cache where I did and after a bit of 'bush bashing' we were in the general area. It was then a case of reading the clue and finding the right set of uprights. The cache was soon found but the rock was not on top, I will have to have a chat with my three workmates who were the last to log.

Log signed by both of us and replaced as per the clue.

A busy weekend of caching was planned by Capperz, and The Seagnoid and myself were invited along. This was a great chance for each of us to pass a few caching goals. Many of our logs were abbreviated to GH, CAP, SEG or GH TS CZ depending on room available.
With our accomodation booked near Lake Rotoiti, and the inclusion of a small boat to expand our travel options the planning was sorted. Pick up a few each on the way up Friday night. Do the bulk of the walking on Saturday morning. Boat around the lake in the afternoon and then break out the Landrover for some off roading on Sunday. We explored some amazing areas, had a lot of fun and dodged the worst of the weather.

A weekend trip up to the Nelson Lakes with G H 6 7 1 0 and the Seagnoid was planned with a couple of days of the weekend in one of the work baches not far off the lake side in Rotoiti/ St Arnaud. Targets were set; get the Seagnoid past 4000 caches, get more than 50 a day for G H 6 7 1 0, and get me past 3200 cache finds. Also in target was some tramping, some boat caching (grabbing whilst moored as close as safely possible to G Z) some 4 W Driving and some basic park and grabs. We also wanted to get all of the puzzle/unknown caches in St Arnaud as well as 100% of the multi caches in St Arnaud (cache Tectonics!). There was driving, boating, walking, rain, mist, sun, ducklings, eels and trout, sandflies (of course), beech trees and great views. Fun and sweat (no tears), a wasp sting and over 100 caches found for me. We all surpassed our targets and at the end of 2 full on days we returned to a cooler Blenheim than when we left tired out.
Day 3 begins and a couple around St Arnaud to start us off including two solved puzzle caches and a couple of 'on the way past' caches too. Aren't they always on the way past? We contrive to make it so usually!
Found an easier way to G Z than the other two but still wet feet from the damp grass was the trade off! Up to the top of the little hill and the cache was soon located. Accompanied by a female robin at G Z who grabbed the disturbed insects

[green] Capperz decided that this was the weekend for a marathon run on St Arnaud. Not sure why, except that base lodge there had a cancelled weekend and was free to grab. So he, I and GH6710 had an interesting time caching the surrounds. Rained on and off. The wet long grass meant that I had wet feet for the entire trip. Saw the insides and tops of clouds, some great views, lotsw of rabbits (or maybe just the one, many times over - it always did the same thing: safe on the side of the road, it decides to runs across just in front of the car). Also got to see robins, sandflies, no keas, sandflies and more sandflies. We managed to get GH to break his 50/day record, and over 120 for the whole trip. Saturday we climbed half way up Mt Robert in the morning then boated around Lake Rotoiti in a little yellow plastic dingy for the afternoon. Sunday was lonely cache day - some over 10 months since their last find. Many of these found with GH's 4x4, bumping over some very rough roads, my first real experience of four wheel driving. What an awesome weekend!
Today is 4x4 day. But first we got to get there, early start, caching along the way.
I think I took the wrong way up this little mountain. Certainly getting back down seemed to be easier. There was a friendly Robin nearby, but it flew off just as I was trying to take a photo. Back to the car, walking through the long wet grass. 4 caches so far today, and already my feet are wet! (which is how they stayed the whole day)

Second of the evening for Pinetree and Pinecone out mountain biking. TFTC. Cheers Pinetree and Sunrise

Tackling a Teetotal MB Park cache run.
Underway and biking this was #5 of the run.
Which way to approach. After a circumnavigation we chose a route. Probably could have done better with this piece of the action. Got there in the end.
Straightforward find, cache in order; log signed and safely re-hidden, just as found.
TFTC found with team cacher Sweet P too
Loving the St Arnaud area. The MB Park adds to the interest, for sure.

Weekend away with MuzzaL53, heading to Lake Rotoiti, phones in hand, personalised manual for the weekend, and collecting caches as we go.

This cache was found as part of our last day at the Lake and our trip home.

A steep climb up the hill saw us rewarded with the cache and the final coordinates required for the final of the Lake Series.

On a mission with KFNZ from Nelson to Lake Rotoiti. Just when you get there there's always a bit more work to be done on these ones Big Grin. Nice hide and location. TFTC now on to the final in Nelson Big Grin at last.

15-Nov-14
A pretty appalling road to drive on and I bailed quite soon, letting StreetWalker do some pothole dodging for the rest of the journey there and back.
When we reached as close to GZ as the car could go, I thought surely the cache isn't up there? Yup, it was. Maybe there is an easier route, but we went straight up. Good to get another smiley and the penultimate piece of info for the final. TFTC.

I was participating in an orienteering event here today. After my run, I checked my GPS to see what caches were nearby, and this one was just over 100m away. I couldn't not get it. Cache easily found. Left GC. TFTC.

[blue]Day 4 of our 31 Days of Caching Challenge.[/blue] 1/40 for the day. After not having a very good nights sleep where we were staying we thought we could get a good start to the day. There was enough light out so we set off early. I wasnt exactly sure how to get to this one but we fluked it anyway, and surprisingly we were able to drive most of the way. After a quick scramble we found it. 1st the the series for us. Thanks for the cache Smile

dry lake/creek today. a welcome bit of rain. just enough to make the scrub really wet. tftc

21-Mar-13
Brought the 4WD in to here today. Interesting to see the installation of culverts since last time I was in the area, but a large amount of water at some stage has caused a bit of damage to the culvert surrounds. - - - Still. Of course the cache was "high and dry" and well out of harm's way. Signed the log, noted the number and we were on our way. TFTC Big Grin

Sometimes you just have to admit that your idea of how to get to the cache is wrong and this was one of them! As I'm usually caching on my own you will understand that these occasions are rare! TFTC #4613

tftc, our GPS was a bit off, but soon found it

Was somewhat mystified about the cache name - what an odd GZ for a Lake? It wasn't until I read the description (usually the last thing I do when I have difficulty finding a cache) that the significance became apparent. MTBed to within 30m. Found the cache, minus the rock on top. Signed log and replaced the container with the rock now back on top. Thanks for the cache. beltfamily.

Not a big area to search, but the GPS/phone meant that I spent most of my time searching the wrong spot. Got there in the end by a process of elimination, before retreating to the car with the promise of a flat white whilst we worked out the final maths. TFTC

04-Nov-12
Not much of a creek today but a nice area to explore. I have to admit that I didn't walk all the way up, a little geocacher growing in my belly makes hill climbs a bit challenging these days Smile TFTC

Our fifth cache in the " Little Lake" series, and final cache for the day.
had no trouble finding this one -good one
have recorded all the numbers.
thank you for the cache

Not the first cache we have found in this general area so happy to straight line it from the road. And the first set of uprights were the right set of uprights - sometimes the gods are on our side. Thanks.

28-Aug-12
From Roto Iti to a Little Hill... My fifth and final little lake cache for today. I managed to remember to note the numbers from all the caches and now await the revelation of the bonus cache. I've been in this area a few times for some other caches and it is pretty cool. Much better weather today than in the picture on the cache listing too. I had to check a few likely spots before I struck plastic. All good fun. TFTC, Biggles.

02-Aug-12
Resited the temptation to drive in. Laft car at nearest entrance on the main road. This random area felt familiar. Good fun this spot. Thanks.

01-Aug-12
Our third cache for today that required a bit of footwork. Not too sure of the correct entry to this cache we took the most direct way to it from the road. It took a bit of grunt for this old girl to scale the heights but a quick find once 'up' there. TFTC.

01-Aug-12
How sad when work brings you where caches can be had and time to do it. Yeah right! The weather improved after rain and snow showers at low levels. Another tick for the series. The direct approach was taken and after an effort to get the old bones at GZ it was not that hard to locate and sign the log. Dropped TB. TFTC

22-Jul-12
Not so quick find. TFTC

06-Jul-12
FTF??? I thought I was anyway but maybe not as I see someone else may have been there first. I certainly signed the log in the appropriate FTF spot but I didn't actually check the back of the book for other logs. That was probably because I was just relieved to sign it after having a bit of difficulty in the dark. The sacrifice to the caching gods you would think would be sufficient to ensure a clean log. Still at least it was an FDF. Wink TFTC

@Angelo&Barn, so sorry if I did in fact deny you your first FTF. Anyone who ran up that hill in the dark through the snow certainly deserves to be first. If I could gift it to you I would. I was there at about 7pm or just before if that helps establish the timeline. All the best for your next attempt. Cheers, KE.

Sorry Kiwi_Explorer, our bad, you were FTF. At the bottom of the hill we noted no logs online and ran to the top, I think in the excitement of the moment of beating Barekiwi to the cache we've probably completely missed your entry. Bloody amateurs!! Oh well at least we're learning. TFTC!!
