What a shame there isn't a track to visit this area. It is getting hard to see the feature well because of the vegetation. Answer have been sent to the CO. It's an interesting place geologically. #10414

Started here today and what a start! A beautiful and interesting place. Thanks for the cache./herrFamaxe from Sweden

I have visited the Putangitua Pinnacles, which are very similar in appearance. One is able to walk amongst them and explore. A viewing platform allows one to get an overall view, which is extensive. The Cathedral cliffs are slowly being obscured from view by the growth of the trees. As can be seen by viewing older photos.

A nice stop at Cathedral Gully on the road from Kaikoura to Christchurch. A very sunny day so we can see much better the rocks. Thanks for the earthcache. Answers sent to the owner.

After staying overnight at a nearby b&B it is time to do some exploring Gore Bay. A bit tricky to see fully, as some of the trees need a trim. Fascinating feature, answers have been sent to the CO, thanks

As previously mentioned the view from the viewing area is becoming obscured by overgrown vegetation. CO emailed with responses.

Found this with angelic_kiwi who has emailed our information. A shame there is not a lot to see from the lookout any more. Obviously there was heaps more visible years ago as per your photo on the cache page. But good to explore anyway. tftc

19-Aug-22
Enjoyed exploring this area with mumandme today, and learning about the formation. Couldn't see much from the lookout, some trees need a trim, so did the Tweedles Gully walk to see if we could get a better view. Wasn't as good as we hoped but we could see some of the formation and enjoyed the walk. Thanks for the cache!

This is a cool spot. We are staying just up the road a km or two, so easy access. The trees are obscuring the view slightly but it is still quite cool. We will be seeing similar ones later on our trip to Omarama. TFTEC beltfamily.

Visited here and collected answers several weeks back, duly sent to the CO. Great area but its a shame the gully track has had to be re routed away. Keen to return and camp here! Tftc.

What a nice place, Gore Bay was our final stop on our vacation to Kaikoura. Too bad the DOC track is now closed and we are redirected to the top of the mountain with little view of the gully. Difficult questions, answers sent to CO. Thanks for placing this here!

I started my great and unique round trip over the South Island in Christchurch.
My first major stopover was at Lake Tapeko - here I hiked up to Observation Mountain.
I then planned two days in Mount Cook NP with some unforgettable hikes. My big goal was the Mueller Hut - on a super strenuous hike I reached it.
I continued my journey over the lonely Danseys Pass to Dunedin.
Afterwards I drove along the Southern Scienic Route via Invercargill to Manapouri for some days. On this route I visited many sights and enjoyed the beautiful nature again and again.
I already booked a tour to the Doubtful Sound in advance - another highlight on my tour.
Afterwards I drove on to Queensown and Wanaka. From there I continued over the Haast Pass to the lonely Jackson Bay with storm and heavy rain. Afterwards I drove along the west coast always in pouring rain.
The rain stopped the whole west coast, but I had good rainwear with me. Only high up in Nelson the sun shone again.
Soon I reached the east coast again in Picton and Blenheim and the sun was shining again.
After a few days I travelled back to Christchurch via the beautiful town of Kaikoura.
At the end of my round trip I spent a few more days in Christchurch and its surroundings.
I visited many geological sites and found many caches on my round trip. In Rangiora I visited an event.
I travelled 3418 km and take home a lot of positive experiences.
Thanks to many beautiful caches I was also shown unique locations, historical sites and geological features.
I am overwhelmed by the fantastic and ever changing nature on the South Island of New Zealand - I will definitely come back.

Many thanks to all owners

We came out to Gore Bay this morning and stopped at the Cathedral Gully on our way out. This is a very interesting landscape and well worthy of an earthcache. Thanks for showing us.

I visited this remarkable and beautiful spot en route from Christchurch to Picton as I was returning home from Christmas in Christchurch. I have never driven this route before, so also had never been to Gore Bay or its surrounds. As with many other amazing places, I would never have discovered this spot were it not for geocaching.

Thanks for bringing me here. Answers sent to CO.

Down from Northland, visiting the South Island on a 7 day caching and sight seeing trip. The main object was to find the last four CANZ caches, finish off my D/T grid, fill as many spaces as possible in my Jasmer grid and then concentrate on special types, solved puzzles, completed challenges and those with good numbers of favourite points, plus maybe a few extras that were close to any of our stopping points.

The trip started off on a good note, with our rental cache mobile being little more than a week old and only 109 kms on the clock. It certainly had a few more by the time we returned it..!

Day two today and heading northward. Made a detour off to Gore Bay for some of the caches here, especially this EC. A very interesting rock formation that does indeed look like a cathedral. Thx for setting up this earthcache and bringing me somewhere I may otherwise never have visited. Answers have been sent to CO. TFTC

On our way down to Cheviot, grabbed a few caches on the way.
Here we loved the rock formations and the views beyond
Answers gathered as best we could and sent to the CO
Hopefully enough to retain the find

The Seagnoid, Toby, Zara and I are off to Cheviot for the weekend leaving early Saturday. Well that was the plan. A new plan emerged with a day trip to Cheviot with Toby and Zara resting up in Blenheim. Lets Go exploring the Hurinui.
Its getting late in the day but just have to visit here before thinking about dinner and heading home. The place is awesome. Spent some time trying to find the traditional here - but sadly no go today. What a great place to end our visit to this area. Thanks for this earth cache Beltfamily. I always enjoy these as I learn so much. Cheers.
I am logging this without COs permission as I have not heard from them.

08-Sep-18
This month is Adrenaline Junkie weekend, given that I will not have much chance for caching thoughout the rest of September, Taybeedragon and myself are heading to the Hurunui. The plan was to bring Zara and make it an overnighter, but instead we just brought Toby for a day trip.
The dragon had misinterpreted this - she thought caves, and there are a number of cathedral caves - with earthcaches - some of which we have visited. But instead, no torch needed. Yes a pretty amazing area, And while we were checking the place out, a kereru decided to photo bomb. Well, okay, why not!

Cache logged as a write note. Will convert to a find once CO approval attained. Will get a favourite then, too.

This is one of those interesting little spots you probably wouldn't know about if it wasn't for geocaching.
We were happy to make a small diversion from our travels to visit here, although we did find some of the questions require pretty challenging. I hope the answers we gave are ok.
Thanks for setting this up beltfamily

I sent an email a couple of weeks ago but not heard anything so logging this cache. Had a lovely day in Gore Bay finding a few caches and exploring the area. Loved seeing these cliffs and we also did the walk from the township. Thanks for the fun of this cache.

My very ambitious goal is to clear out enough caches so that I only have 500 caches unfound within 80km of home by the time I go back to work from maternity leave.... but new publishing unfortunately makes that harder!! And with only one week till I return to work, and almost 600 caches within 80km, I don't think I'll find 100 more in that time, but may as well get close!
So today I took annual leave off motherhood, and hubby looked after baby, while mum & I went off geocaching!! Plan was to get the 30-odd caches within 80km of my home that were in a kind- of- bunch up north-ways.

We ended the day with 32 finds, and quite a lot of them had been unloved for months! But came home a little later than hubby was pleased with... oops! Haha I hope he lets me out next time too! Razz

Have sent the answers to CO on behalf on mum & I. I hope they're all good!

TFTC!! Smile

It's been a while since we went for a nice long day of caching with sonia26642, so we decided that it was time to do it! We started nice and early and headed up north to target mainly those neither of us has found, and some odd one one of us has. We had an amazing day of adventures!! What a cool spot, thanks for bringing us here!!!

Answers sent and logged now after visiting earlier in the week. What an impressive formation!

Managed to come here for International Earthcache day. We are doing a self drive tour of the South Island and this was our final leg. We drove from Kaikoura to Christchurch via this scenic route. I am currently sitting at the airport logging the answers to the owner. Lucky I have some time to do some research as there are no signs here to explain the formations. The cathedral gully was a lovely spot to visit. Another unique spot that my muggle husband even found beautiful and interesting.

We had the weekend in Gore Bay and wow what a contrast the two days were. Saturday way hot and sunny , today it was awful. Had to dismantle camp in the rain and beat a track home. Called past to get the requisite information and trundled back down the road. Great spot missed the trad as it was blotted out by the earthcache but that just gives us another reason to come back. Answers emailed to CO.

We had time today to make this detour off the main highway, and it was so worthwhile. Many scenic views along the way, and this Cathedral Gully was such a surprise. Thanks beltfamily for inviting us here and setting up this earthcache, the answers have been submitted.

Paddle Chick and I were heading back to Nelson after spending a week in Christchurch with family. We did a few caches along the Waimak river and a couple of other trails on the way. We then headed north when we realized I needed 33 caches to get my 1000 th,so headed towards Gore bay was hoping to make it to Cathedral Caves to achieve this, what a beautiful place to get my 1000th cache. Thanks for the earthcache Belt family. Cool

Not quite on the same scale as the Putangirua Pinnacles but rather impressive all the same, and well worth a visit. They are well hidden away, and without this earthcache I would of never known about this place.

Logged with permission, many thanks beltfamily.

Logged with permission of CO.

Found with TregearP as part of out 2015-2016 South Island Earth & Virtual Cache Road Trip to Te Anau (to do the Kepler). Over 3,200km journey we completed 15 Earth and 3 Virtual Caches along with a few traditionals.

Photos and other logging requirements recorded with TregearP's log.

Thanks to all the Earth and Virtual CO's for taking us to some interesting places along a route we've travelled all of several times and parts of many times yet driven past and missing some unique and interesting features.

TFTC.

A quick 24 hour trip away has been planned over the last couple of weeks and Greymouth was supposed to be the destination. Weather forecasts however were not looking too flash so late in the week we changed the booking and decided a night in CHCH was on the cards and let mrs capperz see the change from her last visit 8 years ago, how time flies! On the road at about 6.30 so able to avoid any of the potential traffic snarl ups and see the coast line in its early morning glory, nice. Over the weekend a little bit of caching diversity, plenty of wonderful places visited and a FTF to boot! Really windy day on Friday followed by drizzly rain on the Saturday but the explorers will prevail and sights will be seen, caches will be found!
We were enticed down the road to Gore Bay after some photos appeared on an F B page, those cathedral spire shapes looked awesome and a nice drive was enjoyed. Solved the 2 puzzles down here and grabbed a couple of traditional caches whilst in the area too, well worth turning off the main road to get here.
Incredible rock formations, well deserving of the Earthcache and F P for bringing us here
Answers emailed just now and back to SH1 we go

Requirements sent through to CO.
Completed as part of The Great 20152016 South Island Summer Earth & Virtual Cache Road Trip of SJT_NZ & Tregearp involving detailed planning and preparation resulting in scheduled reviver driver stops in the 3200km journey.
There were some challenges, some long days and the odd speeding ticket - yet to confirm who was driving at this point.
We completed 15 Earthcaches and 3 Virtual caches, it would have been four but a navigational error had us drive past the VC and not realise until we were another hour down the road.
To all the Cache Owners thanks for all the effort in putting your caches together, Both VCs & ECs involve quite a bit of research and it was appreciated and made the journey educational as well as enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Mega trip to NZ: day 3, alone with my beloved squib. We wanted to drive to Kaikoura and find some caches on our way. My husband noticed sign Scenic route and scenic it was! We stopped to admire cathedral. I missed to tell my husband what kind of cathedral it was and he was blown away.. Thanks for the fun and greetings from Finland.

Found it with Team FIN [janahola, kapeka, laalaa & temyllyl]

We had fun with caching few weeks here in New Zealand. Lots of geocaches and many sort of them too. We saw awesome places, weather was pretty good all the time and people were friendly and polite. Caches were pretty similar like in our home country. Of course there were some exeptions. Nice and really scenary country!

Greetings from Finland

On a geoholiday road tripping to Christchurch MEGA and around beautiful New Zealand. Our four people group (temyllyl, laalaa, kapeka and myself) from Finland used group tag FIN to log the caches.

After the Mega weekend we drove from Christchurch to Blenheim caching on the way. We saw many nice places and caches. Thanks for the cache!

Welcome to MEGA Finland in 5-7 august 2016!

11th day on our geo-roadtrip in New Zealand, and caching our way towards north. Logged using our group nickname FIN with janahola, laalaa and kapeka. We made it to Christchurch, and now it is already to start heading back home, fortunately first driving back to Auckland.
This scenery truly reminded us visiting last spring in Barcelona Gaudi's Sagrada Familia church. Both places just amazing.

Wow, this amazing natural formation is so close to the road but so easy to miss. Another great geological feature found by using geocaching as a tourist guide. Made our observations to send to the CO. And the name, spot on! TFTEC beltfamily.

cache find #3794 Had just found the nearby cache, and walked over to admire the views and the earthcache. We love finding earthcaches on our travels. Together with Orionj we worked out what was required. Stopped to admire the views and to take photos. Thanks for taking us to this place. If it wasn't for geocaching we would never have known about this beautiful place. TFTEC.

Logging after sending answer by email to CO, awaiting response.

Out for a day caching with Gullivers Travels54 from Christchurch north along the east coast to Kaikoura. This was one of the specific spots that was on the list to visit today and I must say very glad that it was. The view here is amazing and the way that the cliffs have formed. Very happy I got to visit this spot.

Thankyou for your time to create and monitor this Earthcache.

Second visit to this amazing place for a cache - last time for the traditional. Had the place to ourselves and the views were brilliant. One of those places where nature beats manmade hands down. Answers sent to CO - hopefully they stack up. Thanks so much for the earthcache beltfamily. Great area to revisit. #7125

Really worth an earth cache...thanks

Heading home after a fun family weekends adventure in Kaikoura. Detoured into Gore bay - just because we could. Fantastic place to stop - so cool to see Nature in it's various forms. Geology can be so cool. Fantastic spot & everyone thoroughly enjoyed having a look & taking photo's (even the wee dudes). Thanks for the Earthcache and the opportunity to find out some interesting information about the area. Cheers.

Although we have been here before, it is a spectacular place to revisit, and today we furthered our education about this feature, although we’re not entirely sure we answered all the questions correctly. TFTC

We were transitioning from Arthur's Pass to Kaikoura today. Thanks to this earthcache, we enjoyed a bit of a side trip through New Zealand's badlands and a short walk along the nearby beach. These badlands look quite a bit different than Alberta's badlands near the Royal Tyrrell (dinosaur) Museum at Drumheller, so it was interesting to compare and contrast. Answers have been emailed to the CO. TFTEC and greetings from Canada.

The last hoorah before cachelet #1 heads back to school and theWanglers spent a few nights in Kaikoura. We were heading back home today and made a few stops. We stopped at Cheviot to try and fill up with fuel but the automatic after hours machine wasn't working. We had enough fuel and headed out to Gore Bay for a picnic by the sea. This is only the second time I've been out this way. We found a lovely spot and had our lunch. The waves were crashing a few surfers were out and about. We had heard of this formation but have never made it out to see them. We headed up after lunch to check them out. We parked up and made a few guess and measurements at GZ and my kids loved the 'fairy castles'. The erosion made for an amazing view!!! Thanks for bringing us out here it great. Sending answers to CO.
Thanks for the cache.

Fabulous spot that was the target place in the area today. CO emailed with answers but no reply as yet. As we are not 100% sure we are correct we will withdraw log if we hear back to say we are wrong.
We have learned a bit about Hoodoos with an upcoming trip so learning about Pinnacles fitted in perfectly. We also found that things we thought we knew were wrong. Not the first time that has happened.
Thanks.

I needed an Earthcache to satisfy the requirements of an Auckland Challenge cache, and as this is currently the nearest unfound one to my home it was a major cache target on today's cache tour of North Canterbury. Answers emailed.

Logged with permission. Stopped here on my way north for the South Island Orienteering champs at Blenheim and Lake Rotoiti. Left Christchurch with plenty of time (ie. 9 hours to Blenheim) to detour some of the back roads and try for 50+ caches (for the bulk finding challenge of the DGSc). Stopped here for a morning tea break and to marvel at the formations. TFTC.

#3239 Logged following the speedy approval from the CO Big Grin - thankyou! Even better as it is not only our 2nd day touring this lovely country but an Earthcache found on International Earthcache day. A silver for us with our caching buddies DazzPete [^]. What a wonderful area to explore (from afar) visually. After a rainy cold day in Christchurch yesterday we were pleasantly surprised to see the day clearing & the sun shining giving us great views & brilliant photo opportunities. Our thanks to the owners for highlighting such an intriguing area & of course for the learning that is always associated with earth caches. Cheers from Australia & thankyou the beltfamily for realising our Earthcache souvenir [^]. Loved the experience, a favourite from us.

Logging with permission.

Day two of our New Zealand Odyssey with Skullracing and it's International Earthcache Day! We were heading north out of Christchurch after a late start due to Britz issues. We chose this Earthcache at random as it was on our proposed route and what an Earthcache to choose! Wonderful views and a quick response from the Cache Owner to boot.

We found the traditional here as well then headed down the hill for a toilet break and to grab another cache. Whilst down the hill we came across a lone fur seal sunning himself on the beach - what a way to start our holiday!

This is a fascinating and quite beautiful formation which deserves wider recognition, not far from where I live I visited it today in the rain where the forces which created these unique structures were hard at work.. thanks for placing this cache, although I have visited this spot many times I learned some interesting new facts from doing this earthcache.
