26-May-24
Definitely lots of Sulphur here, so strong. The hint meant nothing to us. Think we found the petrified log but not 100% sure. Found after looking all over the place & then walking up from below. I spotted it thank goodness.

26-May-24
This one took us quite a bit of searching until we finally laid our hands on the cache. Still not sure about the 3 parallel sticks. Strong sulphur smell down here. Tftc

14-Apr-24
Came here a few years ago and came up empty. Decided to give it another go today. Funny enough it's raining today like it was the last time I was here. Made my way down and where my ph told me last time to look was saying no go further. Carried on and got to 7m look around me and saw something. Is that it? Sure was. Glad to tick this one off. Enjoy the area here. Wouldn't of known it was here if it wasn't for the cache. Tftc.

14-Feb-23
Superb spot. On an amazing trip for the Tarawera Ultramarathon, this was found during our (extended) stay in Rotorua. Thanks for the cache!

14-Feb-23
This was our last find for today as we filled in what was meant to be a travel day but with our plane flights postponed until tomorrow we needed to find something else to do.
With sore and weary legs we made our way down the path past GZ and onto the lake where we took some great photos just as the rain started to fall again.
We eventually made our way back up to GZ where we were able to spot the hide on our way. TFTC and bringing us here

15-Oct-22
Steep walk downhill. Steps washed away in places. Take care when decending. Beautiful spot. Lake is not full currently.

19-Apr-22
On our way back home
Mr EyespyBen found this one after a bit of a hurt in the rain

19-Apr-22
Found in passing second time round with ABCDF4 on our way to Rotavagus, a bush bash to get down but once the gps settled cache soon found , tftc.

18-Apr-21
Found it on a mission out of town. Steeeeep climb down. Lovely little lake

18-Apr-21
#1013 - Tripping around the Rotorua area today. Beautiful area, I had never been down here before. A pretty steep walk down the hill, so many possible hiding spots. Like a previous log suggested its easier to spot from the bottom.

18-Apr-21
Another quick trip down a side road, with another couple of potential finds up for grabs. Headed down the path with care and went too far to start. Backtracked and headed to lake edge and spotted the hide on the way back up. All good here and thanks for the cache GenCuster.

Day 2 of our visit and 20 caches were found. A real mixed bag with a Geotour one, the CANZ regional one (just AKL to go for the NI set), a couple of solved puzzles (incl a 5/5 Challenge), a letterbox, 4 Virtuals to get the Project-GC badge upgrade, an Earthcache and a lap of the lake (in the car) and plenty of great scenery.

We're off on a mini-break to the Bay of Plenty, specifically Rotorua and a visit that we had to cancel due to the last Auckland lock-down trapping us in the region. Away Friday morning and a weekend in 'Vegas' before heading back home on Monday. Nothing massive caching-wise, a few PWGTs, some Virtuals and a couple for solved puzzles was on the list and that was about it for finds really. As they say, quality over quantity (sometimes). The weather played ball and was generally good and it was good to be back in Sulphur-town after about 6 years since last visit. Thanks to all COs for their contributions.

20-Feb-21
Beautiful lake!!

27-Jan-21
A short side trip to pick up the two caches in the area and visit this little lake. Once at GZ it took a little while for the GPS to settle and initial searching was unsuccessful. I decided to pop down to the lakeside for a look at this lovely scenic spot. On the way back up I looked in an area not already searched and soon spotted the second part of the hint. Its easier to see from below. Tftc GenCuster and for bringing me out this way.

04-Jan-21
I am down in Rotorua for a few days of caching with some friends who are arriving tomorrow. Today, I went out for a few caches while I wait for them.
My GPSr would not settle, and I couldn't find the first item in the hint, so this one took me some time before I spotted that cache. TFTC.

14-Jun-20
Stopped here to walk in to try and find this cache. The description sounded amazing. We walked in and carefully down the hill. The little sulphury outcrop of rocks was a bit of a sight and then we got down further and WOW . . . . . the view of this lake just takes your breath away. Thank you so much for bringing us down here today. So now to find the cache . . . . . walked around in a circle for a bit and then trying to find 3 parallel sticks ??? so I finally spotted the petrified log but still couldn't locate the 3 parallel sticks . . . . . . and then I saw the cache just sitting partially tucked under a tree . . . . about or so meters directly off the end of the petrified log. We hopefully have hidden it a bit better than we found it so muggles won't loot it. TFTC

14-Jun-20
Our second stop on this little side road . . . . . we decided to walk in and try to find this cache . . . . the description sounded cool. Walked down thru the bush (directions were great) We found some cool eocks where sulphur had once flowed over them and a beautifully quiet little lake. This place is amazing . . . . . would like to return here sometime. We were mucking around taking pictures and Mum was hunting thru the bushes looking for the cache and she found it . . . just sitting not well hidden. We rehid it better than she found it. TFTC

Nice spot, funny smell. Fast found. TFTC

I was down this road earlier in the week at night time grabbing the nearby cache called '[Glow worms in native bush Rotorua](https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC6VWG1)'. I decided not to grab this one in the dark and I'm glad I didn't because I would've missed the views from near GZ which just simply are magnificent! The cache was quickly found.

As I was coming out of the bush there were 3 riders on horses and the horses got a little spooked. Luckily no rider fell off their horse and I was able to cautiously walk past the horses without further incident.

Thanks for bringing me off the beaten track to a fantastic location worthy of a cache.

TFTC Smile

In Rotorua with Merlot58 for Easter. Out exploring the area we detoured off to locate this one. Not sure about the hint but we found the cache. Beautiful spot that we have never been to before.

21-Apr-19
In Rotorua for Easter with Jag50 with the aim to put a smiley face on as many caches as we can. What a beautiful spot! Mrs Jag spotted the cache after a brief search though we didn’t see the petrified log

Smile

21-Mar-19
Mahalo from Hawaii for the cache. Decided not to take the travel bug since we are going further away from Africa.

28-Feb-19
I made this a lot harder than it needed to be. Coordinates were very good under the circumstances but I assumed they would be unreliable due to the conditions. I simply, somehow, avoided looking at it all the time I walked past it. No matter. Never a bad day out that way, especially when you can loudly crunch the dry leaves underfoot and nobody else is there to hear it. By the way, "opposite" still has four cardinal points, depending. I found it in the last quadrant. Off home for a well-deserved drink and some self-pitty.

16-Sep-18
Found the petrified log. Had to widen the search a bit to locate GZ. Finally spotted and signed log. Thanks for being me to such a lovely spot. TFTC

We're always grateful for the dog attribute when we see it and even better when we see a lovely picture of another cacher's geopooch. So we added this cache on to the list since it also had lots of faves and is in an interesting place. Albert the Geogreyhound was very pleased to have his walk down to the fascinating lake and we loved coming across the sulphur deposits, so interesting.

We walked down to the lake edge for a look and then wandered back for a more intensive look for the cache. Couldn't quite make sense of the hint, we did find one bit just fine but not so good on the other bit but not to worry we were confident we were in the vicinity. Sure enough spotted the cache after a little toing and froing - big enough to have you kicking yourself - how did I not see that?!

Log signed and returned, all is well here, thanks for the cache. Mrs Tuolei nominates this for a FP, high praise indeed.

16-Mar-18
Nice sulphur smell. Quick find close to gz. TFTC. A fav for the view.

25-Feb-18
Great hide !! Excited kids watching out for dragon

12-Feb-18
Been to this location before during a school camp so when I saw it on the map I was pretty happy to return for another view. Water level is much higher now than I remember it being. GPS was jumping around a bit so walked down to the lake and came up a slightly different path and bingo! there it was. No muggles around today so it was easy to retrieve, sign and return. TFTC

12-Feb-18
The rain was keeping all the muggles at home today, thank goodness because we had a little trouble finding this one GPS was not our friend. We ended up go down to look at the lake and read a few logs and found it on the return. TFTC! Smile

Wow had us stumped for awhile so we went further down for a walk and thout we will return as we may have missed sumthing. Sure enuf the hint indeed become true . good hint .

25-Nov-17
I knew this would be a tricky one. MRS tryfyn turned back at the steep path. I continued down and proceded to flounder around for ages until the GPS gave me 2m. After that the cache was soon located but I still don't like the hint. Couldn't log a DNF after all the other Tauranga cachers had found it! TFTC.

05-Oct-17
The cache was very nice and we loved the lake it was nice try to cover it better

05-Oct-17
Well this one had us stumped for a while, took the wrong track and ended up going in circles, decided to walk up the bumpy track, definitely the better way to go and a good track to follow, got there and spotted in the open. We tried to cover a bit better before we left, many thanks for the adventure.

08-Sep-17
Cache number 3391 and day 84 of current streak. Parked at the end of the road and walked to the top of the track and realized my phone was in the car and if I wanted to take a photo then it was better to go back then. A bit of a scramble down to the lake edge. The track has suffered a little from erosion. Enjoyed the view before heading to find the cache. This was spotted out in the open which made it easier. Signed and then back up and quickly to the car before the rain came. Thank you for the placement.

03-Sep-17
Nice little walk... Smell of sulphur very strong. Bit of a search but not a major.

14-Jan-17
Out on my 1st geocaching mission and am so pleased to have found this beautiful lake. Started at the wrong track and a couple of muggles suggested the road. Walked down the road, refreshed my feet in the lake then headed towards what I thought might be a good hiding spot. Took a while and a few scratches later when "mumma" jeffrcray's spotted it from a distance. As I am learning she stood well back, pointed in the general direction and sent me in! Great container, log signed and then I got taught how to camo well. Walked back up the bush track/stairs. TFTC. find #2

14-Jan-17
Took alot of rustling around in the bush before mum spotted a glistening corner. Great finding bigger caches. Thanks for bringing us to this beautiful spot!

04-Jan-17
Goodness me what a hike I had to do d this cache. I found the abseiling spot and loved the colour if the water it was so tempting to stop for a swim. I backtracked to find the correct track then took ages trying to find the cache. There were a group of teenagers enjoying themselves in the sun and I tried hard not to disturb them and as they were singing and laughing I guess I succeeded. Spotted the cache eventually signed and took off back up the hill. I was amazed there weren't more people here as it is so beautiful.

01-Dec-16
I hadn't walked this track since I last ran the Tough Guy Challenge... well... walked... well, got to the end Smile
It is however a great spot and it was cool being here to explore. The GPS was for one reason or another.... useless but a good description and hint made it a quick find. Cheers GenCuster, TFTC.

Nice lake and really strong smell of sulphur. The cache was quite hard to find because GPS couldn't get it's coordinates straight.

23-Oct-16
Mrs W was over at Lakes Ranch winning a first place it a Cowboy Challenge event on Sunday, we stayed overnight and went for a ride to the lake this morning, her on her horse, me on my bike.
Cache all present and correct.
Lovely spot. TFTC.

11-Oct-16
11/10/16 Never fails to amaze me how this cache remains in situ. Was sitting in plain sight, clearly visible from the track, untouched since April. Now has a covering of parallel sticks, as it should, nestled under a scraggly bush. Thanks for finding my caches, Cheers, GC.

13-Apr-16
Unusual wee spot. Thanks for the cache.

24-Feb-16
we searched for a long time, but last we found it

24-Feb-16
Returning from the CANZ-cache we also made a stop here.
We didn't read the listing carefully, we walked to the lake in sandals and flip flops. I slid down the way a lot.
Fortunately colatruck found the cache. I'd almost given up. T4tc

We were talking about this cache for few days.
Tonight, fefe.adrien, Helonon and I decided to go there.
It smell the sulphur a lot ! Smile
Even if the level of the water is quite low, the lake is very beautiful.
Not to easy to find it in the dark but thanks to the hint our hypothesis was the good one.
On the track to return at the home, we enjoyed to observe many glow worms Smile

Thank you for the discovery and the information

Found while attending Inferno 2016.
I spent far too long looking for petrified logs and parallel sticks before enlisting the help of 'scargoes.
This is a beautiful lake and I enjoyed canoeing on it and abseiling down the cliffs.
Thanks for the cache GenCuster.

Not good cell coverage so GPS all jumpy. And too many petrified logs.

25-Dec-15
One on our Xmas day road trip from Eastern Bay to Taranaki. What a beautiful spot and totally free from mozzies which was good as it was very humid and we had forgotten to put on any repellent. We chose this one as we thought it might have fit the lonely cache criteria (no other caches within 5km) when we eyeballed the map but in hindsight there are a couple of others too close. Never mind we still got to stop and see another beautiful spot that we wouldn't have otherwise seen

November in Europe, the dark month, neighter autumn nor winter: short days, rain, fog. Everywhere unlucky people.
But now we are in NZ. Early sunrise, mighty green and flowers everywhere. Happy cows and sheeps also. We delight look forward to such lovely challenge. Thank you NZ. Greetings from Germany, from the mountains of Harz. TFTC

Actually found by Dad while wandering about 3m from cache, disbelieving the 16m to the cache my phone was telling us! I was born in Rotorua and been back lots since but never knew this lake existed (Dad did though, being a permanent local and keen fisherman and botanist. Cache was all in good order. TFTC.

Great little spot by hidden lake Smile

I happened to be in the area today to compete in the Tough Guy and Gal Challenge with some Hamiltonian Geocachers. The track for the event passes only a few meters from GZ but to avoid the more than 1000 muggles that would be charging past I came here as part of my 'warm up'. This is a great location, which I think I have visited before when I was on a school camp out here. Thanks for bringing me back here. As for the event, I scrambled up steep hills, crawled through tunnels and under barb wire, waded through a lake and swamp, wallowed in mud and climbed over large obstacles-so pretty much your average Geocaching adventure with HKCB, Cats&Dragons and 11hpg11!

We had done the Dragons Breath cache a few years ago and called in this afternoon to see the changes here and find the new cache. An interesting landscape near GZ. The cache itself took a little searching for and was eventually found by one of us starting below GZ and working uphill. Thanks for bringing us back here.
