TFTC! Were headed to Purakaunui and took a wrong turn so did this fun geocache to turn around
#22859 @1810Back in NZ to attend the Geo Toroa Mega in Dunedin. Today was driving from Christchurch to Dunedin, targeting a few specific caches to help with various challenges and goals. A quick find on my return from finding / attempting the two challenge caches on the peaks near here. I enjoyed a cup of the nice cold water. TFTC.
On the road heading towards the Mega via Port Chalmers now.A good find. I filled my water bottle.TFTC
Nice fresh spot and apprepiate placement next to nice safe parking, the horse that went by seemed to be in a hurry!.. love the handy provided cup lol
Replaced with a 1 litre screwtop. It's under a slab of ferns that have been pulled off the bank (probably by the same vandals who sprayed graffiti on the horse trough ) - please leave the cache covered completely.
Checked today while biking past. Unfortunately cache is missing. Will arrange replacement asap.
Saw several parties filling containers from the stream. All good with the cache. Thanks
Found on the way back over from Waitati - nice spot and a good sized cache - wonder if there is a track up to Cedar Farm Reservoir ? TFTC
Nice easy find. Always good when there is suitable parking so close by, especially when there were more cars travelling along here than we expected (there is only so long you can pretend to look at the water). After finding so many caches with soggy wet logs it is nice to see CO making sure their log stays dry.
Only a trickle. Was hoping to fill up the van but would take all day. Quick stop while looking for the way up Mt Kettle.
I guess was part of the old dray trail and the horses and owners would have been grateful. Still in use today by the look of the cups left there. Great big cache so pleased to drop off some tbs. Thanks for creating this stopping point.

I am on a 4.25 day geocaching road trip with Jude_E. We're going to spend most of the time near Dunedin. Some geo art was a real draw card. We are on day 1.25.
How novel, the trough and the cache.
Thanks for hiding this cache daywalk I appreciate it.

Heading through here today for some caches. Did not realise this trough was here. Quick find once I had a look. Plently of parking on a pretty narrow road.
Thanks for a great cache daywalk.

Nice quick find thank you. Thanks so much also for all the fascinating information.
After an uneventful day of not finding much, this was a beautiful stop and lovely cache
Traveling back home from Dunedin and took a detour, great corners on the bike. Cheers for the smiley

No caching during Covid-19 alert levels Level 3 & 4.
This includes virtual waypoints - we need to stay home except for essential outings.
Working together, we can beat delta and keep our community safe.

In Dunedin for the week for work and have been doing some long hours so decided that today I would leave early and hit some caches off the beaten path. Well didn't manage to leave as early as hoped so knew I would only have around an hour before it was dark so planned to have a quick look at each and if I couldn't find it not to waste too much time and move on...I can always come back right?
Parked up across the road safely and wandered on over. Spotted two mugs next to the water...wonder what thats about. Quickly found the cache that had been well covered in leaves. Signed log, returned and was on my way.
Thanks for the cache.

I need this one for a challenge, and on a misty day like today I thought there might not be too many muggles at the site. I had the place to myself for a brief search, then had time to admire the trough and surroundings. Why have I never noticed this before??? Thanks for this Daywalk.
Great to have so much information about this location. Retrieved TB after muggle filling his water bottles left. Then walked back a little and up a track to discover the remains of an old stone building. TFTC.
After a couple of very wet days in Dunedin, we woke to a glimpse of blue sky and sun so decided to find a few caches in the city before heading north to Moeraki.
I was happy to find a good pull off spot opposite the water trough, where the cache was a quick find. That's the biggest "small" sized cache I think I have found . Dropped off a TB that has been hanging around in my caching bag for too long.
There was quite a gush of water flowing here today. My only water trough story is that there is a trough on the road from the Sign of the Kiwi down to Lyttelton, though it is not nearly as picturesque. Thanks for the interesting cache page write up and TFTC.

I remember finding this many moons ago..before I heard of this geocaching. So great to come back whilst living the geo dream to refind it
After a visit to Port Chalmers we decided to take the long way back to Dunedin. Very scenic, I enjoyed the drive. TFTC
Another one of those places you’d just drive by without a cache to prompt a stop. Thanks for the history
New Zealand is under Level 4 lockdown from today for at least a month, because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
I am disabling all my caches for the meantime to remind people that we MUST break the chain of infection.
Covid-19 is now being spread within the community, person to person. We know that the virus will remain on surfaces like metal and plastic for up to 4 days.
We have only one chance to stop the Covid-19 virus spreading further. This is to BREAK the chain of infection by keeping each household separated completely. During this time each of us MUST keep isolated and only share with the people in our own household.
The best advice is to act as though you are infected... which you might be. We know there are cases in Dunedin... I might be infected and so might you.
If you touch a cache container, you will leave viruses on the plastic, logbook and pen. Those will remain infectious for up to 4 days. Suppose some other person finds the cache tomorrow. They are likely to pick up those viruses and will get infected.
Playground equipment is out of bounds for exactly that reason- touching surfaces can spread infection.
Each of us has to do our bit to save lives. If the Covid-19 virus spreads, a lot of us will die. Maybe your grandmother, or my friend who has just had a bone-marrow transplant.
Stay home, stay safe, let's get to the other side of the pandemic before we go geocaching again.

Awesome spot! Filled up my drink bottle and took a trackable! It will be jet setting to Australia with me!!!! Tftc
Checking on way past. Added pen (it had gone missing) and put back in the correct spot.
Dropped off Oregon Coast #1 trackable [https://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=6936466](https://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=6936466). It likes water and is aiming to get to Oregon, USA, eventually.

Picked up river rat and dropped off geocoin - then had a lovely cold drink of water! TFTC
Loved reading up about this little water trough. Found with Yeah Aight on a drive around the peninsular after the rain deterred us from Mt Cargill. TFTC!
This water is so pure, so crisp, for sure it is safe to drink?
Well, using my hands as a cup, I did. It is several days later now, and I can report that there were absolutely no signs of malaria, diarrhea, vomiting, or things in stool that shouldn't be there. Quite the contrary: after drinking that water I felt extremely refreshed.

We had decided to ride to Orokonui today, so invited Mr and Mrs daywalk to join us. Given that we had e-bikes we could beat them on the uphills, but they, being younger and less risk averse, could beat us on the downhills.
Stopped for a breather here and grabbed this one in passing. Nice history and an interesting spot. This is what geocaching is all about but, unfortunately, placements such as this are all too rare nowadays. Definitely worth a favourite.
TNLN. TFTC.

What a cool cache! This particular has a big significance for Deane and he grew up in the area and remembers this spot as a very young lad with his dad. Quickly found and cache still in good condition. TFTC, a fav point from us. [^]
no dunking today! Still more hidden creatures to find. Enjoying caching with kiwinutter, luciusmalfoy05, emojiqueen and silver_penny
Thank you daywalk for the informative slice of Dunedin history. Glad to have the presence of the trough finally explained after driving by so often. Lovely spot. Found while on the way to do the Orokonui Estuary walk.
Tried to find this a couple of months ago but the daylight had disappeared. Headed back this morning and soon had it sorted with Frame Family. Tftc
Nice little spot, with the sound of the trickling water. It gave us somewhere to wash our hands after finding the cache! TFTC!
Quick find with BetaNate. Another one of those sites I wouldn't have learnt about unless there was a cache there. TFTC
Nice easy park and grab. Have driven past here before and never even realised there was something!
Well done!
Found with waimoguy

Back in 2016 the cache disappeared from its hide, after a newish geocacher had found it 'super exposed', dropped in a TB and rehidden it. We checked, searched around the area but it was nowhere to be found, so we put in a replacement.
Well... on Friday KJR sent a message to say she had found the original cache with the TB in it , so today took Mrs D Senior on a cache checking drive.
Sure enough, there it was, a metre from where it should have been, in a place I had originally considered as a cache hide but thought it would be too wet... I suspect the person who 'hid it better' didn't realise they had successfully hidden it from the CO as well!
Another bit of good news is that several locals have found the replacement cache and written appropriate comments in the logbook - "Hei waiora, the healing power of water' - it is indeed a place with mana.
So all good - have put the original cache back in the easy-to-find place, with both the old and new logbooks - sign either logbook! I've also added three pretty brooches given to me by caching assistant Caro especially as cache swaps - enjoy!

We just completed the walk to the Organ Pipes so carried on down the road on our way to Port Chalmers. Nice quick find and picked up a TB that wasn't listed. Just logging now and it has been listed as missing and supposedly not in this cache. Glad to get it back on its way! TFTC
Awesome spot fresh water beware of muggles Would not recommend leaving trackables
Enabling Monday 24 October. A minimalist replacement cache with only a logbook and pen. Will see how it goes...
Last time going past, found cache in front of where it should be and put it back completely concealed with a couple more swaps.... but today it's gone... will arrange a temporary replacement to see how that goes.
Didn't find today, there is a sort of hole where I found some false teeth however - haha!
A quick park and grab with Sirbennis. Looks like it might snow again up here will have to head off to lower ground. TFTC
Quick park and grab, then decided to head back as the snow was starting to get quite heavy. Interesting history. TFTC
Easy find with a new recruit who I met whilst searching up through the rocks at the organ pipes
Interesting story, loved it!!
Thanks for the cache, outstanding bit of research, appreciate the effort.

Out for a drive to Waitati and back today. Had no trouble securing this one - in fact, I took the time to sit back on the trough's edge and take in the surrounds. Amazing to think that this once was a main road - (possibly) a consequence of being a child of the 1990s is that I see freeways and major highways as being the only main roads. Thanks for showing me this bit of history and another side of Dunedin. Cheers!
Thanks for the history, that is why I love caching finding out about history going to new spots that you usually just drive bye. Son enjoyed this one especially splashing me as I was finding the cache. TFTC
Thanks so much daywalk for the interesting and detailed cache description and the replacement log which I had the pleasure to sign first. AS we pulled away a father with two boys arrived to full up their water bottles. TFTC #7936
Mr D amused his biking mates last week by checking the cache on the way past. Since he reported the logbook was a little damp, this was our route for today. Chatted to the lady filling her jerrycan at the spring and told her about geocaching. Nice new logbook to replace the damp one and onward to Orokonui cafe for lunch.
Logged with the kind permission of the C.O - I just couldn't remove the lid...
I was returning to Chch after a family Christmas in Dunedin; decided to drive this way to claim U.N.C.L.E.'s nearby Quarry cache.
Great cache, day walk - this is why I love geocaching - highlighting the history behind something I would've otherwise driven past . Photo of container attached.

The plan was hatched a few years ago now and it has been a standing weekend away with a few of us mad keen cachers. This trip was made up of Karma Reprint, Team_Gaters and me (TheWanglers). We couldn't use a previous anagram to sign the logs as one member was in Aussie. So we had to come up with another... Hmm, KiTT? We decided on KiTT but after signing the first few logs something KR mentioned took a while for me to sink in and I didn't really take on board until the next time I signed the log. "Hey, the double 'TT' looks like Pi!". Oh, that's what KR said! So we signed the log this trip as KaTT pronounced 'Kapai'! And the trip was kapai!!! We had an epic weekend starting with a detour to Peel Forrest for a few FTFs, stopped in Omaru, thrashed Dunedin and detoured to Port Charmers for a FTF and then back to Pleasant Point and Peel Forrest to finish off the weekend with more FTFs. We got home to our families at a respectable hour after clocking up just over 1100km!
We had a few milestones we really wanted to crack. My 4000th, TG's 5000th and KR's 10,000th. We cracked my and KR's goal and got really close for TG. It really is about the numbers. This trip was awesome as it has given me some ideas
We decided to try and get a few around Dunedin head north up the Leith and Waitati valleys and back into town over Mt Cargill. We stopped in Waitati for a great lunch. The weather played nicely too. We stuck around town to grab the ones in town before it got too busy. Quick find. Nice double container.
Thanks for the cache.

Show weekend and a Road Trip to Dunedin with 'The Boys'....Karma Reprint & TheWanglers. Initially came up with the acronym KiTT but on seeing the TT looked like a Pi symbol we quickly changed to Ka(Pi) (ie. Kapai)....and a fantastic weekend it was. 3 days, 1100km, a heap of caches and great fun.
Wow. Cool history; thanks for researching and placing the cache. Nicely contained container. Cheers.
