20/6/15. 12:48 PM. Cache #2614. Streak day #363.
3rd of 4 finds today. Cleared my last unfounds from Hornsby Heights (today's DNF at "Across the Land" at the end of my run will be the only one left).

After "Crossland Heights", I continued on foot to this one. At first I thought I would walk up Somerville Road and walk downhill to the cache, but then decided it was easier to follow alongside Berowra Creek along the Benowie Walking Track. I rechecked he description and saw that the approach would be better from the SW because with all the recent rains, the flatter part of the bush was indeed swampy. Even coming in from this angle it was damp, but I could hop from tussock to tussock.

Once at GZ, it was an easy find. Log was slightly damp, but signable (and is now double-bagged). I dropped off a TB and then took a more westerly route back from the bush once I found a way out. Back to the car and drove up the hill a bit for "In The Loop". TFTC.

Out for a rainy day cache with the kids. Log is quite wet so couldn't sign but otherwise in good shape. Left some swaps.

On a caching adventure for my birthday we decided to visit Hornsby heights as there looked to be a few geocaches in a similar vicinity along a nice bush walk. Not taking a close look at the map and never having visited the area before, I assumed that Somerville Road ended at the start of the National Park and it was fire trail from there. Little did I know that this road not only continued to the other side of the area, it even led to a super popular picnic area!! (yes I probably should have done some background research but I didn't really feel like it on Christmas - the day before)

After quite an adventure (and then DNF) at 'Across the Land', then walking up to the road from there and finding 'In the Loop', we continued down the road to this one. According to where we'd driven to the parking (my GPSr does not have this road on its map - part of my initial confusion about the area) the cache was directly on top of the road. Of course, we realised that this could not be true, but we assumed that it was nearby. We had read the description, but were hoping we could access via the road anyway.

Looking to our right as we walked down the road, it seemed less and less likely this would be a viable access point for the cache. Luckily, as we got as close as we could to the cache from the road (34m) the slope wasn't TOO steep and we were able to make our way down. We certainly earnt our terrain rating. Heading towards geozone, I was very happy to find the cache instantly - a relief after our 'Across the Land' experience.

Thanks Baktrak for a great ammo tin in a nice area.

I was on a thru hike with a group of students going from Hornsby to Mt Kuringai. A couple of students I had introduced to geocaching recently but most of them had never heard of it or done it before. As part of the activities on the hike I decided to include the geocaches we were going past. I would find a spot to stand and tell them all that the cache was within a 20m radius. I would also give them the details of the size and any hints. The kids all loved the idea and the thrill of caching, so lets hope we have some new cachers out there!

This was an easy find so we let the kids who had the least experience in geocaching attempt this. It was interesting to see them scramble towards the GZ and then watch how they attempted to find it. They went straight past the obvious hiding places but soon back tracked (no pun intended Razz) to locate the cache.

To start the new year it was time to knock off a few Old School caches plus a few more along the way. It was hot and geoson and I worked hard for our finds, but it was certainly a great time. This was cache number 3 of 5 for the afternoon.

We got back to the car from Across the Land to find there was a cache within 60m! So that couldn't remain unfound. Nice little bit of history here. I trod carefully across the swamp and was rewarded with a sturdy container. TFTC Baktrak

Nice bit of history and an awsome area. I passed by here a week ago by kayak. I was going to return by kayak, but I'm now glad I've walked the loop and done the local caches. GPS froze on me under these trees, so I wandered about until I got better reception and a bearing instead.

Day 13 of "31 Days of Geocaching"

After an early morning start to drop Smurfyguy off at Hornsby Station, I was heading back home through Galston Gorge. I was thinking about my day ahead and where I might go for my daily geocaching fix. Somerville Rd was looming so decided to swing by Crosslands Reserve to grab this Baktrak cache. I turned on my GPSr but the PQ loaded from my trip to Windsor yesterday didn't extend this far so out came the phone and I fired up C:GEO. Mr Ranger was around checking on things so I waited until he drove by before making my way to GZ. Luckily, no encounters with either mozzies or leeches! My phone brought me to within 3m and a likely hiding spot was spied with a nice big regular sized can in situ. I signed the log and replaced as found. Walking back out of the bush, Mr Ranger drove past me again so I gave a friendly wave and headed for the car. Thankfully, he didn't stop to ask me where I'd been! Crosslands Reserve really is a pretty place! Thanks Baktrak for the cache and the beaut history lesson. I enjoyed both.

I have never been to this area of the world before, and as is the nature of cache-chasers, I probably never will go there again Smile

It was a hive of activity today - being a long weekend, but I don't think anyone took notice of a sweaty man running through GPS in one hand, iphone in the other Smile

Mozzies and leeches are bad lol! We nearly got eaten alive!!!

The area was fortunately very dry today, but I could see how rain would affect it. A short stroll took me to GZ and a likely place, with a very large container well hidden. I don't know how the log would get wet, these things survive just about anything. Thanks for a good cache in a great place, it was nice here by the river, even on a really hot day.

After reading Mr MR's NM log I visited the cache today and replaced its innards. If earlier finders had closed the ziplock bag or the ammo can, it would have survived the deluge. Anyway ... Cache on!

26-Feb-13
The container was completely full of water with all contents saturated, including the log. Although I emptied out the water, the cache requires much more attention. The log needs replacing as I don't think it can be saved.

I was driving through Galston Gorge on the way to Dural but had to turn around when informed by an oncoming motorcyclist that the way was blocked by an accident. My plans in ruins, I decided to attempt a couple of caches in the Crosslands Reserve.

This was a quick find in a spot which is presently seriously mosquito infested. Insect repellent is recommended.

Unfortunately, the container had not been closed correctly and was completely full of water. Everything, including the log, was totally saturated. I emptied out the water and signed the log as best I could, though I could not separate the sodden pages to open it at the correct place.

The cache needs more attention than my meagre resources could provide, basically everything needs replacing.

Thanks Baktrak.

My afternoon almost done, but needed to get the 2 Baktrak caches on the way out. Walked from the car into the slushy stuff, but it was ok. Walked right up to the cache Big Grin I SL, TNLN and replaced. Thanx for keeping the area alive with caches Baktrak, well done. TFTC.

The family had a nice picnic at Crosslands Reserve on a warmish summer day, and afterwards went for a walk along the boardwalk to the attractive viewpoint. On the way back to the car Geokid8 and I raced ahead and went searching for this one. There had been lots of rain earlier in the week so the swamp was fairly swampish, but we were able to make our way through without getting wet but with attracting all the resident mozzies. The iPhone was not happy with the tree cover or its low battery level, but eventually we found some likely spots. The geokid then spotted the container, so we grabbed it, signed the log, took a TB, then returned it to its spot before joining the rest of the party, before they got back to the car (pram 'n gran speed). TFTC!

Found on a day out around Hornsby.

Was looking to make a find today and start a series of finds to get a challenge cache in Townsville which requires finding five caches in alphabetical order. With two new ones close together here in order it was a good place to start. The Crosslands Reserve is a bit of a hidden gem of Hornsby Shire, hidden away up the end of Somerville Road. It's a fair drive and then a plunge to the creek but a great park. Visited many times and I always wondered why there weren't more caches here.

Was interested in the history although there's not much sign here. This was a short stroll across the swampy ground (which floods after serious rain) and a quick find. I signed and grabbed the TB, dropping off three TBs. Replaced the cache with slightly less obvious camo, although camo is probably only obvious to a cacher!

Thanks!

Having shamefully neglected this one when the event was on here the other week, I thought I'd zip by today and do the double. Nice big tin it was too. Hopefully it, along with the others around here, bring a few more people to this great riverside reserve. Thanks Baktrak.

03-Nov-12
This is obviously a very popular reserve, as it was teeming with muggles even on this rainy morning. The reception in the area was hit and miss, so I made it all the way up to the road before the 'arrow' turned me around.
It was actually found in an area I was heading towards when I first arrived, but diverted due to a big spiders web! I shimmied under the web on the way out. TFTC x

Met up very early with Bella at Waggy to organise a car shuffle for the walk. After failing to hail the ferry man, Graham Cookie was nowhere to be seen, I suggested we try this cache seeing that BaW were unsuccessful a little earlier. Now it is not often a virgin cache is within my grasps but off we went anyway. Sat. lock was woeful in here but soon the Oregon settled down. I opted for a little gain in elevation to get better sat. lock which worked a treat, and then narrowed down the search area on my descent. BaW extracted the cache from its hidey hole and we were not at all surprised to find that the log was blank. Took the TB and the FTF pathtag. Thanks Baktrak.

A difficulty one. Oh dear! It would be frightening to know the number of caches worth of experience that was in our little group, and to also know that this cache managed to elude all of us for a few minutes. Eventually I went back to where I had already looked and realised that I was looking at the cache! Thanks

Last find for the day after everyone else had moved on. The GPSr bounced around a bit, but in the end it was an obvious hide. Thanks Baktrak.

We were navigating to this cache after getting back to the road after 'In the Loop', and passed within 45m of it. But that 45m was over the fence down a nasty looking slope, so we sensibly kept walking on the road & came back the right way to look for this one Smile.

Someone did look in GZ early in our hunt, but missed the cache. We all walked further in & searched in many wrong spots. Then bikerbuddy rechecked the right spot & made the find. Much embarassment for all of us over how long the search had taken Big Grin.

Thanks for fun hunt Smile

Hehehe we had a decent group and 3 or 4 GPS units employed but still it took a good 5-10 minutes before anyone spotted it! We went up down and around until Biker Buddy rechecked an area he looked in and claimed the prize. Our last for the hike bar the Earth Cache back at the start and a Trig on the way home. Very enjoyable day and the most caches Ive found in Sydney area at one time for a long time as the Geostreak has been cutting me short!

Cheers Baktrak!

We had already arranged to meet at Crosslands early as part of the car shuffle with the NSW Geo Walking Event. Imagine our surprise when we saw some new caches in the area so we headed out the door earlier in the hope of a **FTF** or two. We arrived at Crosslands to find the place full of campers so we thought the FTFs might have gone but then had success at Crosslands Height so headed over hear as we still had some time. Our usual problem with a D 1 hide surfaced as we could not get a good lock and a wide search did not show up the hide. We headed back and met Tronador as previously agreed for the car shuffle and we teamed back and headed off. Tronador's GPSr was more accurate than ours which narrowed down the area and we made the find with the help of a torch. We opened up the log for a joint FTF. With the signing duties done we re hid. During the event I needed to return to the car to check emails as I was on call and couldn't get data reception on the phone at our table. The cache was near to the parking spot so into the bush and made a fairly quick find, with the phone initially wanting me a bit high. Thanks Baktrak.
