All was quiet at GZ, so I would have plenty of opportunity to search. However, right by GZ was a dead possum. I tried to search, but the smell and numerous blowflies really got to me in the end and I had to leave the search.
A quick little overnight trip to Hawkes Bay and then up to Taup and back home to find some Adventure Labs and to hopefully qualify for the S39 Challenge.Interesting area. Note cache container a lot smaller than the rat traps scattered about. All good here, and thank you to funkymunkyzone for the placement of your Traditional Cache.Find #6704 at 27 April 2024 12:59pm
I seemed to remember that there was a cache here but for some reason hadn't had a chance to search for it. Dropped off a rafting client and this was the perfect opportunity to grab a quick smiley face. Love this area.
Currently staying with in turangi and making day trips for bush walk and caching. What a force of water here - quite amazing. TFTC
Found after climbing Mt Urchin, we had a great day out. Didn't know this was here. Quick find.
Yay, first log on a fresh log sheet. Awesome place. Beautiful waterfalls nearby. Would never have known this area exists if not for this cache. So worth visiting. Thank you for the cache.
On a mystery weekend with the civil defense team, found this wee cache. Wonderful view! Tftc.
Thank you for a great place to visit. Good fun these locations which I'd be unlikely to know about but for geocaching. Cache isn't much but worth a FP for bringing me here.
Taking the side-road to this awesome spot with soooooooo much water moving through today. There was also an alarm blaring at full blast near GZ, but not too distracting and I soon had my name added to the log. Cheers fmz.
It's head back home today and after a night of torrential rain I wasn't hopeful of finding some dry weather to make a few finds. After breakfast with Liv and bidding her farewell to Auckland I headed back out to Tokaanu for a few, then a side-trip along Kaimanawa road for a few more. Nice day in the end, got up to 17 degrees!
A 3 day trip to Turangi is the plan for the weekend, but the weather is not looking likely to be all that favorable with lots of rain forecast. My youngest daughter is driving down for the weekend from Auckland to hang with Dad, so looking forward to that as I haven't seen here for a little while now. We stayed in the work's bach for the weekend and that was all good with sound amenities and a nice amount of caches were located. Also managed a soak in the Tokaanu hot pools, finished off 4 different Lab Cache series, and a couple of Geotour caches too. Thanks to all COs for their caches this weekend.

Picked up with ABCDF4 whilst in the area neat spot for a cache, loved the scenery and watch the sika deer on the road in the evenings, TFTC.
In a different century I worked for Electricorp (I think it was still the Electricity Division of the Ministry of Energy back then) and spent some time doing maintenance work at Tokaanu and Rangipo. I can tell you it's pretty cool inside. TFTC.
I'm staying at the nearby DoC camp as a volunteer on the 8 day Godzone Adventure Race - 675km of trekking, biking and paddling. Took a short break to go for a geo-bike ride while waiting for the next team to finish the 95km trek through the Kaimanawa forest.
TFTC. My son loved having a look at the infrastructure... and then he got to 'find some treasure' too!
Our visit was our first cache find of the new day, and new month, and new year. So it was our first for 2021. Tftc and smiley and souvenir
Found yesterday with PatnJohn and petone32. We had walked the Umukarikari track toward Sharp Cone then visited the dam as we drove out. Interesting construction. TFTC
Found while spending several days in the Turangi area with the Hutt Valley Tramping Club including livingk and gpetone walking and cycling some of the local trails. TFTC
With help from Patandjohn, and with livingk enjoyed sightseeing this power structure after an energetic HVTC walk up the Umukarikari track to the bushline.

And electric blue it is. We could hear the water in the building sloshing around. Worked out what the rail above the dam was used for. I wonder when the gates are used.

Leaving Taupo earlier than I would usually do gave me time to check out some caches on the east side of the Desert Road on my trip back to the Hutt Valley. An easy find of a cache which has a colour that could well be described as shocking.
On holiday in Turangi and decided to take the opportunity to explore this area and grab the various caches hidden there. Left this cache until last and stopped in at GZ on the way back. Had a look around the area first before zeroing in on the cache, with Jr. Cacher #5 making the find. The cache was a little damp inside but the waterproof paper meant that we had no problems signing the log. Dried things out as best we could and replaced as found. TFTC.
For our Christmas vacations, we stay for two days in Hong Kong and then two weeks in New Zealand : a lot of geocaches are on our way, including that one !
Geocaching : a good opportunity to discover the area.
Merci beaucoup pour cette cache !
Thank you very much for this cache !

We are on our way down the Desert road with a few stops on the way.
Stopped off at this dam along our journey. Men working on the Dam at the other end. Far enough away for us to snag and tag this one. Cheers. Those big gates there are very interesting. Would love to see them in action.
Day 11 - Monday - Rotorua to Desert Road. The Team is back together and heading south.
The Seagnoid, Zara and I are on another epic caching adventure for the next two weeks, starting with the Wellington Mega, then East Cape, Tauranga, Waihi, Rotorua and back to Wellington. Its been an awesome journey, over 2500 klms later, visiting many amazing places. Thanks to all COs

I find the phrase "The Pillars of Hercules" intreging so, since we have time, I suggested we stopp of at the eartcache on the way back to the ferry. So here we are, on the way to there. Some workers working on the far end of the dam, they pretty much ignored us. The gantry system for the water height dodads is interesting. Dropped in a new log sheet.
I find the cache description "The scheme generates approximately 1350 GWh of electricity annually." an interesting choice of words. The statement is correct, yet is also wrong - it should either be "generates 1350 GW/h." or "generates 11.8TW annually". Yah, I am a pedant!
---
Day 10 of our Mega trip: Rotorua to Desert Road. Two weeks of travel with Taybeedragon, from Blenheim to the 2018 mega event, then on to my mum's eightieth birthday in Rotorua via the East Cape and Tauranga and the hole in the ground that is Waihi. Dropped the dragon off in Wellington while I continued on to Motueka for more family time before at last arriving home. We may have only found 230 caches over that 3000 km, but I qualified for 4 badge upgrades, hit the 10,000 cache mark, and even have a missing month ticked off! Throughout most of the trip we targeted special caches - earth caches, virtuals, wherigos, etc, although there were a lot of traditionals too. On the cache maintenance side about eight caches were replaced, and many more logs were added to or replaced. Many thanks to everyone who made this an awesome trip.

After attending the Feilding ANZAC dawn service to commemorate the sacrifices of previous generations and heading home for breakfast, I was at a bit of a loss of what to do for the rest of the public holiday. I came up with a bit of a plan today, with a special cache for my 4000th find and a few more around the central plateau.
Heading back towards the direction of home now, and I've identified a few caches off the Desert Road that I was to target. This was the first of these and it was a quick find here and I can get back on the road. TFTC

On a road trip south and we found this neat we place...a few trout fisherman trying their luck and oh so peaceful....I checked the geo site and wow how lucky can you be ...there's one about a 100 odd meters away...a short walk in the nice cool evening air and soon had the cache in hand and signed...thank funkymonkeyzone for the great placement
We are on a roadie starting today and lasting indefinitely with no particular destinations. First stop is right here - idyllic so far. A bonus having a cache on our doorstep. All good here. As we signed the siren rang out and we watched two fishermen scurry up the wall out of the way but we didn't notice any increase in water flow. As we stood on the dam a bug trout lazily swam past!! Thanks for the placement funkymonkeyzone
Found this cache after a camping trip for my besties birthday. Log very wet needs maintenance. Thank you for the cache. Off to take a photo of the waterfall.
We were on our way across the Desert Road, southwards and home today after a few days' holiday in Turangi. When we travelled up the weather was atrocious - pouring rain, roads awash, all views obliterated, difficulty even seeing the road ahead! Today couldn't have been more perfect, blue skies, bright sun and mountains standing proud and clear.
We had limited time available for caching so, rather than stopping at intervals to pick up a few along the main road, we decided to deviate off and focus only on the Pillars of Hercules Earthcache and any others along that way, before continuing our journey home.
Well, this one was certainly along the way. We came here as we drove back to the Desert Road. The find was quick and straightforward but the container has suffered from all that recent rain. We had to tip water out. We dried it as best we could. The log is damp, but is signable. TFTC

Cool spot. More Eco friendly power for NZ. Lucky enough yo be here between rain so river active and dirty.
#120 Found with my mum Gr33nslime and perhaps my dad JimmyNZ. Trying the mass logging thing with GSAK hence the really general log entry!
# 917 JimmyNZ had some time off work, and DangerSAM and myself were keen to get out of the house, so we went on a holiday to the shores of Lake Taupo from Palmerston North, and caching was to be big on the agenda!
DangerSAM, JimmyNZ and I plus a couple of friends had ventured down this road to visit the Pillars of Hercules. The boys wanted to see some big infrastructure so here we went! Some hardy souls were rafting down the river just as we left, looks like fun. Thanks for bringing us to yet another piece of the hydro - scheme.

Gr33nslime, DangerSAM and I decided to have a belated break from work and came up this way for a get away from our usual haunts down in the Manawatu. Luckily we have some friends with a bach around in Omori so we were able to stay there and enjoy some great weather. Almost every day we were able to get out and cache around the local area. Some locals have placed some interesting caches in places that we have not been before. We’ve been amazed by how many caches have taken us a few more steps off a well worn track to see some great little gems of New Zealand. We’ve been coming here for many years and these caches have been a cool way to explore the local area in a lot finer detail. With DangerSAM now playing the game with us it’s been good to take him along to these new places, many are kid friendly. Our muggle friends even enjoyed the distractions when every so often we’d veer them off the path to get a cache on out on our many outings. My thanks to the caches in this area, they have put some great little finds together and are very much worth a visit.
The cache was easy to find and had an odd recursive feel to it when eventually found. The place was packed with thrill seekers and understandably they were all well down river from the massive water collection point. Very cool place and a great spot to visit and generally wonder at.

It was like this was a purpose built hide! I wonder how many times I've been to this place and not realised that there was a geocache here. Retified that now

Second to last find of this year! (Interestingly enough that the log Before me says it was the first cache of the year [:o)][:o)][:o)] )
Came here because Foursquare said that there was a filming location of the scene "Everything is lost" from LotR here but I doubt it's accuracy. Anyway, discovered a cool hidden campsite and nice falls here.
Thanks for the cache!

We had a great time geocaching in this area such a lovely area to visit never knew there was a small camping area close by and people were having a lovely time many tents were here. it even had a toilet. then went to get this cache it was a quick find no muggles to be seen here today. signed the log and placed back where found. cache all good here today. now to find the next cache along our travels. always nice to be brought to a new area thats what we like about geocaching it takes us places we would never think of going to. tftc
TFTC. Just about had time for this one, but the others in the vicinity will have to wait... never mind, the area is worth revisiting! TFTC.

#2991. I have been up at the Turangi Mega event over the weekend. But like all fun activities it has to come to end some stage and now slowly making the trip home. I decided to divert down this road to pick up a few caches. The Poutu dam is accessible to the public so interesting to have a look over the barriers at how the river is harnessed at this spot. What I found most fascinating on the cache page was all these dams, tunnels and diversion canals in the Turangi power schemes only contribute 4% of the total energy needs of New Zealand. That is a huge amount of engineering for such a little return. Then off to locate the cache. Good coordinates and a nice quick find. Signed and replaced as found. Thanks for hiding it here.
Team B.O.P. has disbanded as TNXPro hit the wall on the back of an epic 4 days and over 176 finds. NZFlossy offered him a ride home and now I've got a very old saying stuck in my head. "When the cats away - the mice will play." I shot Davidson clan a cheeky grin... Rangipo?... then as if by magic - McJandals and her hubby Dave emerged from a trail It didn't take a lot of convincing from here - we were off to Rangipo and even better then that - Daves vehicle was far more appropriate for the job!
This trip keeps getting better and better - Everything here is either big, beautiful, interesting or all three. The cache was found quickly and in good condition thanks the accurate coords, a good hint and straight forward placement. Cheers FMZ - TFTC

I think I've been here before but eaither didn't know about caching or, with the family they didn't want me wondering off.... anyway as I was at the Mega event, I found the time to parkup and wonder round the building to the GZ. Easy from there. TFTC
On another mission with half of Team BOP. (Phillip Perry & Bruce Davidson) the others had to get home unfortunately as this was the start of some great places and scenery to visit. Great place. TFTC
Team BOP has lost a member of the team Tnxpro needed to.get home so he grabbed a ride with Nzflossy and we jumped into McJandels ute. We head in the opposite direction to home uo the Desert Rd to get these caches. Cache was quickly found and in good order.

First full day in Turangi for the mega event, and I thought I would head south for the couple of power station drive bys as well as some bushwalking which I much prefer to urban caches. This one was fairly easily located before going out onto the bridge for some photos, despite not having the safety gear shown on the sign at least with me, it's all back in the work car in Sydney. Thanks funkymunkyzone.
Found on day one of the Mega. A bit of a cut and paste log for the moment while I preform the mammoth task of logging all these caches.
