I'm staying in St Arnaud for a few nights and today I hiked up to Mt Robert, taking the Pinchgut Track up, then following the Robert Ridge Route as far as the Mt Robert ski field, then returning down Paddy's Track. Is was a beautiful day for it and a most enjoyable walk. This cache was a quick find as I made my way down Paddy's Track. TFTC!

Today I went from Lake Rotoroa to Lake Rotoiti. My mission: get up Moint Robert and catch some caches to get to 500.I thought it would take longer to do the loop. My navigation predicted 3,75h to do the loop, so I assumed it would take around 5h with findig the caches. It took me a bit more than 3,5h to find 12 of 18 caches.#504

In order to satisfy the requirements of a challenge cache, todays aim was elevation up to Angelus peak, and back, along with a couple of side trips, in a day. Yes, it is possible even at this time of the year, with one end being in darkness though, the oh dear it's early end. I walked 40 km over the 15 1/2 hours and gathered together 28 caches. With the previous days snow in the area, the wind from the South, across the top of the ridge, created enough wind chill to freeze my drinking tube and make some ice crystals in my spare water bottle. And, just enough that there were a handful of snowflakes further along. Then, at the other of the day, the Northerly wind was warm. This was a few short of my original plan of 34 to keep on the safer side of darkness at the end of the trip.

This was #21. Easy find here as it nears an hour until sunset. Should make it back to the car in daylight, just.

I did the Pinchgut/Paddy circuit with a group of friends staying at Bushline Hut so, of course, took the opportunity to grab a few caches on the way... a good excuse for a rest break! The lake is way too cold for me to swim, but the cache was easily found, TFTC!

Stunning view, despite the clouds on top of the range. Little cacher said he would only jump in the lake from here if he had a Canon to get him away from the mountain. Both container and logbook were in good condition.

Located with Ricardinho

A quick find by RNZ thanks to the very accurate coordinates

Weather is going to be very hot while we are staying in St Arnaud for the next 3 days so today was a hike up Mt Robert to the Relax shelter via Pinchgut track, then across to Bushline hut and down Paddy’s track.
The hike up Pinchgut was not as difficult as I renembered, I might be a bit fitter these days compared to when I last did it over 20 years ago!! I had forgotten how beautiful the view is on the way up & from the summit We had a magic day weather wise & it actually wasn't too hot

TFTC

03-Jan-22
A couple of spots matched the hint but again the coords are really food so it’s a simple and quick find. We have had great luck in that we have not really encountered muggles near caches on our walk today, with one exception. TFTC jackieandgrant.

First full day in St Arnaud and it’s a warm one.
We decided on a trip up Mt Robert to the Relax shelter via Pinchgut track, then across to the hut and down Paddy’s track.
We looked at the weather and the day after is predicted to be even hotter, so today is the day for this and we got an early start.
We loved the climb up. It was not as difficult as I imagined or RG72 remembered, and we came across another couple to chat to on the way. The descent was a little more exposed, but no dramas here either. We did feel a bit drained after the trek though - probably lacking some fitness.
17 caches targeted today. Just one true DNF, another we gave a miss as there was a nice family settled in for a while. All caches signed RG + ricnz or variations close to that. Any particular notes on each cache is in the first paragraph/sentence, but we found them in pretty good condition.
Sorry for this cut and paste bit and thanks all COs for making the walk fun.

We wanted to find five caches today. GK suggested he head in this area. We were watching the weather forecast and the snow we had earlier in the week and wondering if this walk would happen.
Thank goodness for the webcam that overlooks the lake, as earlier this morning he could see that the weather was clearing and it looked like it would be a nice enough day with no snow.

He also wanted to go and do a maintenance check on one of our caches in the area as there was a dnf on that one recently.

There was only one other car in the carpark when he left so thought the walk would be fairly muggle free.

We had made contact with the CO as there had been some dnfs on this one recently, so GK went armed ready to replace it if he also could not find the original.

He could not find the original, so he put a replacement cache in the spot that looked as though others had been searching before him.

Thanks for placing this cache and thank you for the smiley.

15-May-21
Thanks to gkmlb for replacing this cache for me. Will check again early June.

Gave the stump a good going over. No sign of the cache.
I wished that I'd messaged the CO. I could have hidden a replacement. Doh.

Thanks for another smile along the way jackieandgrant.
This on was quickly found on the way to the carpark. It was a short night with 17 people in the 12 bed hut... But it was fun and I will definitely recommend this loop walk to friends.

One upside from the recent lockdown period is that it gave me the opportunity to think about some day walks and overnighters that I've wanted to do for a while but never got around to. So, with NZ regaining some sense of freedom I set off for one such walk - the Mount Robert circuit.

I agree with the sentiment but today is not a 'lake-jumping' day; a few boaties out there from what I can see but the swimming will need to wait for the summer again now.

Back down into the trees now so this is my last view of the lake today.

Thanks

It was up Pinch gut Track, then a side walk to Mt Robert Ski Field, to get back on the return downward journey. Quick snag and tag here. Cheers.

Zara and I are off for some much needed tree time, with Lake Rotoiti on my agenda for today. Spent a fabulous time Friday and Saturday walking around Lake Rotoiti. Today my sights are set on Mt Robert. So lets go. Started from Buller River Bridge at 6.20am to finally get back to Zara at 2.30. Then decided to return home after a stop at Karens for an ice cream. Its been an amazing weekend.

Christmas time, and we went on a big family tramp to Kahurangi. Mum, brothers, hubby, and our 2 year old. We did a 7 day tramp, and then went to Nelson for the night, and then split up, and the 3 of us not wanting to go home yet did yet another hike just overnight.

We had a great time hiking, and hanging out with great weather (Except for one day! ) and good baking!

We found almost all the caches on the way too - except for some which were just too much of a detour with a heavy 25kg pack!
Thanks for all the hides, and sorry for the copied logs, but it's just been so much time, so hard to remember exactly, and it's a busy life chasing a toddler & running a business! Eeek!

TFTC!! Smile

Clear and sunny day was awesome for this short track around Mt.Robert and the caches made it even more interesting. Thank you

After a week away working in Sydney, it was good to be back caching on home territory. No wriggly sticks to worry about here!! This cache has been on my to do list for ages. Finally in the right place with enough time to get here today. All good with the cache. Found in the first place I checked. TFTC, Biggles.

A bit cold today to be jumping in the lake, even with all the walking, a jersey was still needed. Lake was very calm, the only ripples caused by a boat headed up it. Cache was a quick find and sign. tftc

After my inbox got inundated with choice yesterday it wasn't a question of when but where. Few things beat a day at the Lakes in spring so off we went. The day turned out to be one of the best. No sandflies to speak of and no wasps. Brilliant sunshine and few people about. After the walk to GZ it was a simple find. The hint item would have made a fantastic springboard in its day for anybody taking the cache name serious Big Grin We decided to make this our turn-around point and go up Pinchgut for some more caching. Thank you jackieandgrant

13-Sep-18
We had been away for several days but unusually hadn't been able to fit in a good walk let alone any geocaching except on the way home by making a detour up to Westport and Denniston so when a flurry of new caches were published while we were stopped on Spooners Range we decided a trip to St Arnaud next day would satisfy our need for some exercise with the added incentive of some new caches to be found.
We arrived at the carpark to find a perfect spring day, warm and not even a breeze so we set off with much less 'padding' than we normally would in this environment but also in the knowledge we weren't doing the full loop today.
This cache was placed soon after we had walked this track last and it has taken us this long to return.
Thank you jackieandgrant.

We had two wonderfull days in the Nelson Lakes National Park. We stayed at the very new campside called teetotal, basic but nice. On the second day we did the popular hike to mt roberts and the other way down to the carpark. We found some nice caches but also had two DNFs, but their probably gone.

It was a hot day, and we would love to jump into the lake that moment, but its a little too far for us. Did this when we got back down.

Thank you very much for this nice cache on this beautiful hike!

Greetings from Switzerland , Team Fludia

Ninalila and I spent a few days visiting around Nelson's lakes and Karamea.
We went hiking to discover nice places and landscapes, and of course play geocaching at the same time Smile
We found all the boxes without difficulty and discovered really good spots for photography.
We will keep good memories from everything we saw (Lake Rotoiti, Lake Rotoroa, Mt Robert, Moria Gate Arch, Mirror Tarn...)
It was a good opportunity to see a lot of native birds on each tracks we went.
So surprising to see them so close and get great pictures Smile

We signed on logbooks with our team nickname : Lekiprokos Cool

Thank you to all owners and their boxes for the discoveries we made.

fefe.adrien and I have visited the Nelson's lakes during few days and spent a great time.
Nice to see a preserved fauna & flora at the lake Rotoiti, many birds were so closed ! Nice waterfall at the lake Rotoroa.
Geocaching was perfect for walking and tramping around, especially the Mount Robert : such a nice view from the summit ! Cool
All of boxes were quite easy to find and well maintained but to many boxes found to make the difference in each log. Red Face

we logged with our team name : lekiprokos

Day 6 of an upper South Island holiday from Rotorua with sveppi. Surprised to find the big-ish tree stumps on this side, the rest of the area is making it look like nothing bigger than grasses can grow here. I wonder what happened to them and why no others grew back? BTW the cache container is a micro but listing says small. Minor detail I suppose...

Found quick before even looking at the hint. Again nice views and our weather for it today is great. TFTC

Out for a Sunday walk with all the Makka pakkas. Plane for the day is to do the loop up to bush line hut and back down pinch gut. Had a lovely day out with lots of caches to find, the Nelson lakes as a backdrop what more could you won't. Thanks for all the caches we found

Headed up to the lake for a sunday afternoon walk... weather has been cooking me in town lately - so nice to be up here in the shade. I know the shade won't last on this Mt Robert loop - but not too hot today.
Track seems busy - both car parks are full - so will be interesting to see how many times I get muggled today. Great views from this point - pleased to find cache quickly before the legs seize up.

A weekend trip up to the Nelson Lakes with G H 6 7 1 0 and the Seagnoid was planned with a couple of days of the weekend in one of the work baches not far off the lake side in Rotoiti/ St Arnaud. Targets were set; get the Seagnoid past 4000 caches, get more than 50 a day for G H 7 6 1 0, and get me past 3200 cache finds. Also in target was some tramping, some boat caching (grabbing whilst moored as close as safely possible to G Z) some 4 W Driving and some basic park and grabs. We also wanted to get all of the puzzle/unknown caches in St Arnaud as well as 100% of the multi caches in St Arnaud (cache Tectonics!). There was driving, boating, walking, rain, mist, sun, ducklings, eels and trout, sandflies (of course), beech trees and great views. Fun and sweat (no tears), a wasp sting and over 100 caches found for me. We all surpassed our targets and at the end of 2 full on days we returned to a cooler Blenheim than when we left tired out.
The last day of January and this January has probably been my most prolific with lots of great South Island caches, with a handful of N I ones thrown in for good measure. Todays plan is to start with some P &Gs, then off up the Pinch Gut for a nice tramp, then back to the car.
Quite a fall if we were to follow this caches name advice. No thanks, we'll walk. After finding this cache of course
T F T C j&g, liking your hides so far

[green] Capperz decided that this was the weekend for a marathon run on St Arnaud. Not sure why, except that base lodge there had a cancelled weekend and was free to grab. So he, I and GH6710 had an interesting time caching the surrounds. Rained on and off. The wet long grass meant that I had wet feet for the entire trip. Saw the insides and tops of clouds, some great views, lotsw of rabbits (or maybe just the one, many times over - it always did the same thing: safe on the side of the road, it decides to runs across just in front of the car). Also got to see robins, sandflies, no keas, sandflies and more sandflies. We managed to get GH to break his 50/day record, and over 120 for the whole trip. Saturday we climbed half way up Mt Robert in the morning then boated around Lake Rotoiti in a little yellow plastic dingy for the afternoon. Sunday was lonely cache day - some over 10 months since their last find. Many of these found with GH's 4x4, bumping over some very rough roads, my first real experience of four wheel driving. What an awesome weekend! Big Grin
Yep, the lake does look close. Maybe "Go Roll in the Lake!"
