We are four ladies from Sweden on visit in New Zealand. We log as TULP (tigertassen, ursus67, lnganfans and pidjas). Today we took a walking tour in the city of Christchurch. We walked quite some time and the weather was a bit cool so we stayed for a warm coffee. A big thank you to CO for the cache.

Answers are sent for the 4 of us.D var det dags fr lite ventyr. Hlsningar frn Sverige, sdra Lappland Then it was time for a little adventure. The trip goes to Sydney in Australia and then on to Christchurch and Dunedin in New Zealand .On the trip are, Tigertassen, myself, ursus67, Lnganfans and Pidjas go, which means that we log under the common name "Tulp". The idea is that before we go home we should have visited a Megaevent, Geo Toroa. Greetings from Sweden, southern Lapland

I didnt know I had an uncompleted EC so close to home! I thought my closest ones were Banks Peninsula. Stopped by today to meet the requirements for the souvenir.

A handy little bush to park the bike under while I did the workings, what interesting bit of geology that I hadn't noticed before. Cheers for the education.

Found it. Thanks for this Earth Cache. Learned something new about those red markings. No andyfreya to help me today.

29-Jul-23
We were looking for a cache for the July spelling challenge, and as the month comes to end we decided to stop here for some geology. The boys like volcanoes and it was cool for them to see the rocks. Answers to CO, we didn't cross the road to measure as it felt a bit dangerous, but hopefully our evaluations are good enough. Thanks for placing this here.

Read up the information and few days ago and came to visit today. Interesting rocks I wouldn't have taken notice of otherwise. Thanks!

We parked and walked to this so we could look and see what you described. Driven past and never understood what really made this. Had fun discussing this and reading further at home. Thanks for bringing us here to see clever nature. Answers sent to CO. Thanks for this Earth cache TheWanglers.

This was a fun cache.
I forgot to log it at the time but found my notes and photo today, then had some interesting debates with my partner about colour descriptions and measurements (I approximated in real life, he did it from my photo- ultimately I was right )

Thanks for the Earth Cache- another piece of interesting info right under my nose that I wouldn't have found if not for Geocaching

I write "WRITE NOTE" because it is a time when we can't go on a long adventure, so I travel in the memories of my visits to New Zeusemad. Of this adventure in New Zealand, I only stretch Travel Bug. Writing "FOUND IT" is probably not right anymore, it wasn't today, but I was here before. And unfortunately I won't get here again.

I am sending a beautiful greeting from the Czech Republic. Smile

**Found on our February - March tour around the South Island. Logging back home in Auckland in Lockdown isolation**

We started and ended the day at the Woolston Club, an ideal base for caching around Sumner, Lyttleton and Ferrymead. Standing at GZ we spent some time trying to best interpret what we were seeing, and what we were reading on the cache page. Took measurements and photos, and completed the tasks after a bit more research at home. Thanks for the earthcache.

29-Feb-20
I was standing here just about to start measuring the layers in April last year when I decided I needed to look at the photographs in the description. That was when I also looked at my emails and saw a list of new caches published - at least one being very close to here so that was the end of this cache that day. Back today with Sidewaze which is always good to discuss and confirm the thinking on the answers. I love the vivid colours here. Interesting what you find on the side of the road! TFTEC # 15,351

Wow, one learns so much from earthcaches! I doubt I would have noticed the colours here let alone wondered what caused them were it not for the earthcache. Thanks Smile!

We are finally catching up on logging some of the caches we found while we were on our holiday. I have sent the required answers to the CO.
This was most interesting, an area that we would have driven past without being any the wiser of all of this information we now have, one of the reasons I love this hobby.
We were a bit surprised by the amount of traffic that was going past while we were here.
There was a cold wind wo we didn't want to hang around too long, but long enough to do the measuring and take a photo.
Thanks for bringing us here and teaching us about this area

Logging with permission of the CO.

Swung by this Earthcache while making my way to Taylor’s Mistake for a walk with the whanau over the Christmas period.
I remember coming here on a geography trip at some stage and the teacher talking us through the formation here. It is a good cross-section spot and easily accessible. I think some of the students were excited as they got to try out their fancy rock hammers for the first time.....
TFTC The Wanglers, nice spot.

Our GPS was very dodgy here, undoubtedly the rock wall interfered with the signal. So, where was GZ actually supposed to be? We decided to pick a spot closed to our GPS GZ and started identifying and measuring. Suddenly two other cachers arrived and we pooled resources. Nice meeting you! TFTC

This spot has been saved for just this type of occasion. Answers sent via messenger. I really interesting spot for more than one reason. Have had lots of fun with these types of rock as part of my work. Dis you know that there are lots of Magnetic rocks across the Peninsula? They are a pain when you are searching for Iron survey marks! Thanks for the effort that goes into caches like these.

**This was 1 of 10 caches that was found by me on the 2nd of 19 days in New Zealand.**
**Which also was the 55th of 75 days that my travels thru southeast Asia and Oceania would last.**

Here I did spent an long time trying to see exactly what I was supposed to see. And a little less time walking back and forth as there was a lot of traffic on the road.
But in the end I thought that I had some good observations to send.

There must have been an severe car accident close to car park by the way. there where namely the cut of front of an car near some kind memorial stone.

*During 19 days I traveled from Christchurch to Auckland in an SUV, that i also slept in during most of the nights. 5.956 km of driving did it take to visit the 351 caches that I have marked as found in c:geo.*

*Earthcaches was my main focus during the stay. And I manage to visit 106 of them. So New Zealand is right now the only country where earthcaches are my most found cache type Cool.*

Answers to earthcaches and virtuals did I send in via Message Center close after the visit, or when this log is written in March 2019.

Thanks to the CO's for placing and maintaining these caches. Cheers.

Usually you just drive past features like this and without the explanation on the cache page we would continue to do so. Did not realise that there are so many different layers and how they are being formed.
Emails our answers (or better: best guess) to the owner, thanks for making us stop here today.

Thanks for the earth cache. Another point one might have driven past without noticing.

Cache # 4,019 - CelloJoss and I had an interesting trip here in the early morning. The rock formations were fascinating, and we probably would not have paid attention just driving by. All answers sent to CO. Thank you for a very cool earthcache!

Sir Belac and I stood on the side of the road, I read the description out to him and we talked about the layers of rock and put together our answers. I did know about the existence of the lyttelton volcano but that was about it. I did the two pillow lava earthcaches during Geofest so it was good to read a bit more about volcanoes. Thanks for the interesting geology lesson TheWanglers

We're well into our second week in this beautiful country. I wish I had more time to explore the many, many wonderful things to see and places to go in this country. I'm quite comfortable in New Zealand as it reminds me of home - mountains, glaciers, and the seashore. It's getting close to the end of a three month adventure, mostly away from home. micaparamedic arrived at my place in Washington State toward the end of July and we immediately headed down to Oregon to find some old caches for his Jasmer challenge. From there we headed up north to The Yukon and Northwest Territories in Canada for a few weeks.

We attended the mega APE event in Washington, and the same day headed down to camp on a farm in Oregon where we were directly in the path of a total solar eclipse. Back at my place, we took a few day trips before heading to Australia where we spend almost a month doing many things on my bucket list including walking around Uluru and seeing the Sydney Harbour. Now we're spending a few weeks in New Zealand (which was also on my bucket list) before once again going our separate ways. What a trip!

This cache made me think I was back in Hawaii where I first learned about the two types of lava flows.

Thanks for this stop.

Early start to the day with daughter on a geocaching mission day! We spent most of the daylight hours out and about, and covered quite a bit of ground in the day. We signed the logs Team Polak for brevity and to save paper, even though some of the caches one of us has found before. Great day to be out, even though it started chilly and finished likewise. Great fun here trying to work out the answers - what a great spot to do some science Wink TFTC!!

I took a day off annual leave from motherhood, and left the baby with hubby. - And meanwhile, mum & I went out geocaching!! My goal is to have under 500 geocaches within 80km by the time I go back to work - and that's really close, so gotta get about 150 more finds within 4 weeks! Eeek!

So we headed off towards the port hills/lyttelton, and then also picked up a trade me purchase in Burnham!

Ended up with 30 odd finds - not quite as many as planned, but I am starting to have bigger gaps between caches!!

Number two for the day. Mum managed to get a photo of us at GZ, and I recorded the answers!

It's International Earthcache day and the day of my 4300th find!
Clinkery top sounds like stuff from an **anecdote**. Anyway, went to see how the aa looks like.
The walkway is actually closed at the moment because of roadworks but when have these things ever stopped a geocacher from a find - never, right? Smile

Thanks for the cache!

[green] Out with Hanknstone again, doing a miscellaneous set starting with the Smile series and then working on the D\T group. After caching the last couple of days in the rain is was nice to finish the day with dry feet - sunny all day! (Surprise!).
Interesting solving this in the dark. Hanknstone and I both have good torches, which helped. Actually, without them we could not have answered the questions. Took some photos of the city lights and the last glow of sunset. Man, H's cellphone's camera is way better than mine!

parislaura, Team Jacob and I flew to New Zealand for the 2015 Mega. Smile
Never having been out of Australia before, this was a very exciting trip for me Cool
What a wonderful thing is a Mega! Cool Seeing fellow geocachers with their flags on driving around town, tooting at those who are at caches and meeting many new people Cool

Today was our 4th full day in Christchurch and our last day here before heading off to Waimate for an overnight stay prior to heading to Dunedin, then Queenstown.
I found 5 caches Smile throughout the daylight hours while also attending the Labour Day Picnic event, then taking the trip up the gondola with the added bonus of the company of my two travelling companions and the cheerful North Islanders, Fuzzyfruit and fire-mansam Big Grin
Later I headed out on my own to cache all night in an (unsuccessful) attempt to find all of the horses head series so total finds all up until parislaura, Team Jacob and I left the following morning was 58 Smile finds.

Wow! So many earthcaches in this wonderful country and each of them has its own special appeal! [^]
Logging now to maintain order of finds and email will be sent to CO asap after I arrive home.
Thanks for the learning Cool

After an extensive walk around the Godley Head area it was definitely time for something a little less Strenuous. This proved to be the perfect option and I soon was parking the car nearby to the area of GZ and taking the short walk along.

I did my best with the questions, and hopefully the answers are suitable before taking a photo to post and then it was on to take a look around at a couple of other things.

On a geoholiday road tripping to Christchurch MEGA and around beautiful New Zealand. Our four people group (temyllyl, laalaa, kapeka and myself) from Finland used group tag FIN to log the caches.

Found it with Team FIN [janahola, kapeka, laalaa & temyllyl]

We had fun with caching few weeks here in New Zealand. Lots of geocaches and many sort of them too. We saw awesome places, weather was pretty good all the time and people were friendly and polite. Caches were pretty similar like in our home country. Of course there were some exeptions. Nice and really scenary country!

Logging with my fingers crossed for this one. Found this very interesting, but also very challenging to identify the layers with confidence. Very interesting that the same type of flow here as in Hawaii which have seen on you tube. Thanks for placing.

It's a tough job being a transport bunny, but at least you can reward yourself with a quick stop for a 'must do' cache. Wow, exciting, it really does look like the diagram in the book! Measurements were taken (with quite a bit of what-do-we think-this-bit-is in the lower areas, but then making you think is what it's all about?).

As a bonus, we found that the carpark is the site of the old Ferrymead wharf and the railway station for the first public railway in NZ, the 1863 Ferrymead-Christchurch broad gauge railway https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrymead_Railway

Many thanks for pointing us to the "Extinct Volcanoes' guidebook - we got it out of the library, brought it up to Christchurch with us and found it fascinating.

cache find #3771 We attempted to do this earthcache earlier this morning, but the blistery winds were just to cold and made us unsteady on our feet so we came back this way later in the day to complete our task. We are enjoying the caches around the area. Answers sent to the CO.

Ever since being the Tourism Manager for Banks Peninsula, I have had a fascination for the volcanic birth of the region (Lyttelton and Akaroa) and the places to go to see the best examples. This has led to me wanting to see and find out about volcanoes anywhere. Other places on Banks Peninsula to go are Onawe, Quail Island, Panama Track/Lavericks Road (huge dikes), Timutimu Head. Fascinating. Interesting also is that Capt. Cook made a mistake on his map of the South Island and had Banks Peninsula as an island. Had he come about 10 million years ago, he would have been right as the volcanoes formed the island which gradually became a peninsula with the the shingle drift and wind blown loess from the Alps. Another truly magnificent, if not a little frightening experience, is to visit Mt. Yasur on Tanna Island of Vanuatu. Walking around the crater rim there, you have to dodge magma rocks that are blown out of the caldera every 5 minutes or so - some the size of cars - I kid you not. Another great adventure can be had at Waimea Canyon on Kauai Island (the Garden Island of Hawaii - see photo) - amazing colours. On Kauai, the whole west part of the island is red dirt and it gets everywhere.

I have emailed my answers even if I was a bit unsure of them. I actually visited it on 18/07. The volcanic rocks of Lyttelton were used for buildings in Lyttelton especially Holy Trinity Church which unfortunately didn't survive the earthquakes. The rocks were also used in many of the retaining walls in Lyttelton.
When I visited Iceland I went inside a dormant volcano of a similar type to Lyttelton's volcano and it was fantastic.

This was a bonus cache for StreetWalker as he needed a J, U, L or Y which wasn't a trad, multi or puzzle for Gracie's July monthly challenge, and that fourth cache type is hard to track down.
As usual, we debated about the questions and the answers but in the end came to a consensus. And now SW carries a tape measure as part of his caching kit so we were prepared for the measurement questions. Not a lot of room by the road to stand by the cliff, so had to keep an eye out for the passing traffic.
An interesting earth cache, good to make some sense out of the seemingly random layers of rock here. Thanks for the geology lesson and now have a new word in my vocabulary (aa) - wonder if it's acceptable in Scrabble? Answers sent. TFTC.

Found with MadCat9 and it was a momentous visit. 1000 is pretty special!
The earthcache was also special. I've driven past here several times and never paid any attention to the rocks except for the colours. This was the first time I'd actually stopped and had a good look and MadCat and I spent quite some time discussing what we could see. I wanted a photo as I like a record of all my earthcaches, but I also wanted a record of what I'd seen. The cars that whizzed by while I was trying to get the photo apparently gave me a few funny looks... not sure why... I mean doesn't everyone hold out a reindeer with their camera for a photo?

Answers emailed to the CO, not sure how right they are... [B)] Interesting to see the amount of history in nature that is all around us, and most people would drive past here without thinking twice, like I have until now... Fascinating. TFTC (1800)

Had to deviate to find this cache in order to finish the 7 souvenirs of August. Meant to be heading to Blue Skies for Region Brownie Camp activity that I'm in charge of so why did I go to Spencer Park? (That's another story). What a busy road this is today - took my life in my hands crossing and recrossing with cars whizzing past my rear end as I measured bits and pieces of the landscape in order to fulfil the requirements. Made it without incident apart from being tooted at by a truck as I was trying to U turn to go park in an area safely off the road before I had even started. Interesting how our land is made up really and glad this one was close to home.

Thanks for this one TheWanglers and I haven't finished my log and already you emailed back to me the approval - Thanks that was really super quick.
