Didnt have time to do this side walk the last time but we enjoyed it today and quickly had the cache in hand. TFTC
Thanks for the cache Spreyton22.I've wanted to explore this area since the MTB development here, and with quite a few caches in the area, I decided to take a little walk here this afternoon with the two GeoGSP's and see what I could find. This was a nice quick find at GZ.
Beautiful spring evening to be caching! Enjoyed my stroll around the shale trail. TFTC ️
A nice quick find on national geocaching day!
The cache is in perfect condition with some old finds on the logbook!

After staying in Sheffield for a very quiet New Year's Eve we headed off with Tassie Trekkers to find a few more caches on the way to and in the forestry area around Railton and Latrobe and this was one of them. A very interesting area. TFTC
come through this morning with the hubby who was going exploring nearby with mates. While they explored i went caching. everything in excellent condition.
Came out to "do" the Earth Cache associated with the Shale Works, then once on site and seeing a great collection of pipes I remembered in the nick of time that there was tis cache hiding close by. The old GPS was all over the place, but we happened on the correct hidey hole whilst it was settling down. All dry and in good nick with room to sign for a little while yet. TFTC Spreyton22.
Being such a nice day I decided to catch up on caches yet to be found in the Latrobe area. This was another bit of Tasmanian history that I was not aware of so thank you for placing this cache that brought me here.
Today gridge98 and I headed to the North west to do the moorland trail, another trail in Devonport and a few around Latrobe. A great day out, this cache was found along the way.
Apologies for the late and generic log.

On completing the near by earth cache I had to make my way up to answer the questions, the cache was near by so made the ice and easy find, such and interesting spot in history.
Today nettieknows and myself headed to the Mersey/Devonport area to collect some new and unfound caches in the area. We tackled the new moorland series, Victoria bridge to town series and a few around Latrobe. It’s great to get out and about in such a time we live in.

With a bit of time off and a chance to get away from Sydney was what I needed TeamMerlin was also free at the time. So Tasmania seemed to be a good place to spend about a week. It has been a while since I last went when I was there for photography and before I knew about Geocaching. We found a lot of nice caches including one of the oldest caches which was a Hide month I was missing. A lot of puzzles had been solved either before we went down or the night before between us. While here we also visited a lot of EarthCache and learnt a lot more about what makes up Tasmania. A quick find and the cache was soon in hand
With cache in hand we signed the log and replaced as found. Both the cache and log are in good condition. Thanks for bringing me to the area and thanks for placing the cache Spreyton22

Odd style of caching trip and run with code 1, not done this before with two cars and the partners in toe. Still was not long before a happy routine was established and away we went, chasing caches as we travelled the TT towards Dover.
We covered a fair way one day one staying at Liffey falls, followed by Jones river at Hamilton and then onto white, beach.
OK so we got a little side tracked.

This cache was found on our tour along part of the TT from Devonport to New Norfolk.
Lots of backroads were travelled and some great vistas and campsites found along the way.
As Tassie does turn on the weather at times we encountered all 4 seasons in a day on 2 of the days and enjoyed every moment of it.
Thanks to all the CO's for placing the caches we found.

Heading home after attending an event in Devonport. We came here to do the Earthcache and couldn’t go past this cache! Missed it in our first look but knew it had to be there somewhere. Signed and placed back as we found it.

On our way from Melbourne to Freycinet for a work function this weekend. Rode the ferry across the puddle and driving down so that we can geocache along the way.
Found quickly while chasing a nearby Earthcache.

Nice easy find after a little walk but the cache was outside of the pipe so we have put it back in the pipe....
All in good order, what a great spot. Thanks Spreyton22, Without geocaching we would never have know of this spot or the any other great places of history in this great nation of ours. We have to give this a fav. Tah
Thanks for checking this was still in place. Back with no children to have another good look and found it.
We were in the area thisorning and checked on this cache. It was a quick find with the cache and contents in good condition.
3 People looked and looked and looked and didn't find
Nice area would have been to see it all going in its day.
Nice area would have been to see it all going in its day.
I took the drive out along the riverside to find a carpark full of muggles [:o]
Not too worry,
none of them were particularly interested in the history in the hills.
They were all here for an Australia day swim in the river
Meanwhile up on the hill,
I was discovering a lot about this area that I didn't know about !!
There's oil in them thar hills,
Texas Tea
Amazing that even early in the 20th century they were mining for oil around here
These days shale oil has become big business,
especially in North America !!
The USA and Canada have heaps of the stuff,
and are free of the tyranny of OPEC these days !!
TFTC and exploration of this olde industrial area [^]

Just out of the car and on the trail when the hail started pelting down. With dogged determination soldiered on. Lots of rusty relics about, many possibilities, where it be?? Located in the third or fourth spot checked. Saturated for my efforts, however, all smiles.. thanks..!!
Quick easy find after pleasant walk from car park TFTC
We've now only got five weeks left of our six month stay (til the end of March '16) from the Kurrajong area, (Blue Mountains) NW of Sydney, to tour in the caravan and also visit our kids and grandkids in the Huon Valley On four previous visits before this visit, we were muggles, so we're having fun finding the caches we didn't even know were here!

Lovely walk to GZ. Enjoyed looking at the relics and we disturbed an echidna which started to burrow so we couldn't see it. TFTC
This was a fascinating place to visit but was a bit too snakey for me today on such a hot day in the bush. Thanks for the cache.
A very interesting spot - found the info about the shale oil mine at the display down the hill to be quite interesting.
Our first visit to a reserve that we wouldn't have found without a cache being here. Such an interesting spot to explore. TFTC
What a great little walk. apart from some initial groans from the little ones about a hill they were fascinated once at GZ. the smell of oil is still present and we will now have a look online to see any more info as it was amazing that it was so close and not common knowledge. TFTC.
Was in the area doing some maintenance on one of my caches and realised I hadn't found this one. What a interesting place. TFTC
Once again it takes Geocaching to get you to some ripper locations. Have driven down this road on numerous occasions but didn't realise the old Shale works was just up the bank. It looks like the cache location is actually at the old processing site which abounds in relics. Cache in top condition..co-ords spot on again. This cache completed a days outing and capped the day off......great spot....so many thanks for a great tour Spreyton22....cheers.
Very interesting place.
As 2y'stassies pointed out, there is a distinctive oily smell in the vicinity.
Many thanks Spreyton22.

Time is running out. We leave Tasmania in a few days, and there's still heaps of caches to find.
We strolled up the hill and spotted the cache location as soon as we rounded the corner.
[/blue]
Coordinate Accuracy: Excellent (Under 2 metres)
Cache Condition: Container and log book are in good shape.
Took: Nothing.
Left: Nothing.
Thanks Spreyton22 for the hunt today.

Found on a trip to Latrobe nice little walk interesting old equipment.
Wonder what went on there.

Nice little area -would never have found it otherwise - good to see the old pipe and brickwork! TFTC!
Found this cache on a north west adventure to find one cache especially - Flummin Hell - But also visit an area I had not been to before. An enjoyable day with Oldsaint
A great area for a cache - and reading the history of the area - maybe a few more to explore the area. I could see this being a great little series in the future.
Anyway thank you for bringing me here to this area.

Hi Spreyton22
An early morning rise had me meet Budgietas at 0630hrs this morning for a caching expedition in and around Chudleigh, Mole Creek, Caveside, Westmorland, Gowrie Park, Sheffield and Latrobe; a change of transport in Launceston late in the evening; I arrived back at Huonville at 0030hrs.
After finding the "HOBBIT"; we took a stroll up the hill and quickly found this cache. The cache was found at 1850hrs. Steep climb but the history available here was worth the climb.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

Found on our way down to the coast for the weekend, stopped to find some caches that had been published since our last visit and this was one of them. Enjoyed the walk to this cache and visiting the site. Great hide Thanks for bringing us here and for the cache Spreyton22.
A pleasant walk to this one [albeit uphill]. Fortunately the breeze cooled the day off a bit. Only 1 snake was seen on the way up but that was as frightened as I was and soon disappeared into the bush. Thanks, an interesting area.
Really interesting area. Especially interested in the mine manager's site that we passed on the way in. The laurel tree and red hot pokers were looking magnificent! Investigated some of the artifacts around the cache site. Local history at its best! Thanks for bringing us here to see it all. only downside is that it was all up hill to get there! [xx(]
We knew about the "Shale Works" in the area mainly from our parents who recalled cars and trucks fitted with shale burners around the streets of Latrobe during the Second World War. The locals used the uneconmic and abandoned deposits to supplement petrol rationing. It didn't take us too long to get to the area of GZ. Abandoned machinery was expected by we were surprised at the distinct smell of hydrocarbons in the area. It confirmed what we had been told - oil shales are still in the area but are uneconomic to work. The cache was an excellent hide making good use of the environment The cache and its contents were in good condition. TFTC Spreyton22 and for bringing us to this previously not visited area.
PS Congratulations tattsus for your FTF - greate to have you back caching and in the area.

Upon returning from The Original Hobbit Habitat, we wonder if we should attempt this cache by torchlight. Yeah, nah, should we, yeah ok why not... Off we went to find the cache. Mr Tatts knows the area quite well (from his childhood days).
It didn't take too long before we arrived at GZ, and had the cache in hand. FTF @ 2345, our fourth for the night. Got to be happy with that thanks Spreyton22
