WA Big Trip Winter 2024. Day 80 - Yalgoo to Geraldton via Mullewa. After a great afternoon and night in the small town that is Yalgoo, it was time to head to the bustling metropolis of Geraldton. There were a few caches to do today, but five out of six of them were a short side trip off the highway to reach. Each was well worth the visit. I arrived in Geraldton in the early afternoon and had a late lunch as I set up. With the jobs done, I set out for a few caches around town for the afternoon. The challenge of suburban caching re-appeared and I was muggled out a few times and beaten by strings of DNFs at others. I did get enough to feel like I had a good day and I did the set of Labs at the HMAS Sydney Memorial. A very special place. Back to the van for dinner. Rain expected over the next few days, so it will be interesting o see how much I can get done.My afternoon started in the port area and worked its way into town for shopping, ending at the HMAS Sydney Memorial. I checked out a few spots before wondering where else it might be and as I was circling around, I saw it. The remaining paper is providing sustenance to the tiny brown ants that have taken up residence in the cache. Thanks for the cache TeamBastholm48512.11 TNLNVisited: World Traveling Gold GC A#6 & 2012 Cache Guardians A#230**Albida**
Found 11:44Three months in Australia with Muggle friends; stopover in Singapore on the outward and return flights. Caches and labs where they are on the way and can be done without too much effort. You may forgive me for using the same standard phrase everywhere, but there's not much more to it than that. Many thanks to all the owners for making our hobby possible. If there is anything wrong with the cache, more detailed information follows. Fotolog available if required.
Last find on a Sunday afternoon of caching about town. Find the cache however it is infested with ants!!!
We found it. Yeah. We had lunch nearby and after that we went for a walk in Queens Park. This little one was on our way. Thanks for taking us here. Cheers from Bavaria Madhome
Not too many ants but it's such a shame that the water feature hasn't been looked after.TFTC
I was about to give up but decided to have one more look and i spotted it. The ants have also taken a liking to it. May need to check in on it. Thanks for placing
Looked and looked… but had to land a DNF…
I’m back after being out of the game for a few years… so I don’t have my Geo-goggles on.

Spotted by my semi muggle mum. My first find in WA this trip. Thanks for the cache.
Found! Good spot, Cache owner you will need to replace. It's infested with an ant nest
Out and about on trusty treadles exploring Geraldton. The trip is making me think about re-imagining Australian history! Glad we detoured this way. Have travelled WEST from home base 3500 km away and that includes altitude as well so enjoying the landscape and habitat changes of this BIG country. TFTC and the lure to visit.
Any nest

On the hunting trail with SeasonedBird while in town for the wedding of the year. This was a more challenging for me than a normal 2.5/1.5 as the ant nest inside the container decided to vacate upon opening many of which took the route straight inside the cast on my hand mending my broken thumb. I did manage to clear the nest out, but they’ll probably return. It’s still a great day for caching.

For anyone making Geo plans, do yourself a favour and visit Australia’s only current Geotour at Ballarat while it lasts: https://www.geocaching.com/play/geotours/ballarat-victoria
And for anyone that can travel to Longreach, Queensland, late September 2023, Google “QOGM” which is the Queensland Outback Geocaching Muster. You’ll have at least 8 or 9 days of pure geocaching fun with around 200 like minded people attending a mix of events and access to over 200 geocaches placed by the QOGM team. It’s not a Mega, it’s better.

Very nice work on the camo. Blends in with the surrounds but I knew what I was looking for. Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache.
We went on a world tour with the AIDAmar and visited many cities on the Australian continent. We visited almost all the big cities in the south of the continent, and it was important for us not only to get to know the country and its people, but also to find one or two caches. We had a great time here. We went caching together with friends from the ship today. Many thanks for the cache say reax1001
Wir haben die Dose und den Stein gefunden und wieder zusammengefügt sowie ein kleines Logbuch beigefügt. Der Owner sollte einmal nachsehen.
Interesting water feature nearby. Cords were out be about 3m for me today and I must admit, we wouldn’t have found this if it were not for scrolling through and finding comments from Happy Feet 1. TFTC
All good here in this quiet park with lots of running water around..quick find cache and log in excellent condition tftc
Out and about, up in Geraldton, a short cache look between other stuff with family.
Found a variety of hides and in different areas which made for a nice day. Generally quick finds today
Thanks to all the CO’s for the hides I found.

Catching up on some late logs, now that I have time, while travelling.
We are on the road travelling up through central Australian and down the coast of WA. I was happy to grab a few caches along the way and this was one of them.
Had to find the right lot of rocks to find this. Co-ords had us heading towards a tree which had been recently cut down, the it jumped around to some palms. Eventually I shoved the phone in my pocket and started to search. Happy to finally make the find under alot of leaf litter, from recent rain but closer to the some rocks that I would have expected.
Thanks TeamBastholm for placing this cache and doing the maintenance, so we can enjoy finding it.

It was a day of variable weather in Geraldton. We visited the old jail and the Hawes cathedral, and it was time for some caching. I found this one after muggle husband had a small mishap in his zealous search for the cache in an incorrect location..
G’day TeamBastholm, unfortunately I wasn’t able to find your cache today (Saturday 9/4/2022). Cheers for the hunt anyway!
Started our 2nd tour of WA now touring around the south slowly heading north on our way home to Cairns. Did your Royal Rocks today. 28 February 2022 2:09 pm Tyfc TeamBastholm total caches now 4363 .
Shire worker warned about being a needle dumping spot. So very careful. George found the little blighter. Thank you.
Just arrived in Gero from Perth to meet up with geohubby who is staying here 1 night. Decided why not! Of course we had to get a cache or 2 whilst here. Tftc.
This one is driving me loco, have tried to find this one 3 times in the last 7 days and feel as if I have pulled on, turned, touched and looked at every possibility. Could CO please check on this it has been some time since it was last found
No luck here today, had a good look around where the gps pointed me to and it’s surrounds and nothing jumped out, will have to try again
Dug all around the retic box and looked all over as that’s where coordinates lead us, no luck this time
pug002 found it 19/10/20 after a bit of consideration, dur, see these before and they do fool you. TFTC TeamBastholm
2nd time back and found it in a couple of minutes. Can’t believe how much time we spent last time
This one hasn’t been found since August last year, 15/8/19, sadly,
no luck here for us today.
no luck here for us today.
We spent a long time searching for this one, but finally had to give up and head back to the cruise ship...sigh!
Pretty sure I knew what I was looking for but just couldn’t find it in the dark
I dropped my car at the nearby brake repair place, result of a punishing trip down the Canning Stock Route. So filling in time I'm wandering the streets of Geraldton grabbing a few caches. This was the fourth for the day, a short search resulted in the find being made and the log was duly signed.
Thanks TeamBastholm for placing this cache.
Thanks TeamBastholm for placing this cache.
Yay!!!! After a couple of unsuccessful tries we finally found it Brilliant little hide, blends in soo well Thanks for the great cache TeamBastholm x
We were making our way to Geraldton picking up a few caches. While waiting for Diane to finish picking up some supplies we headed to the nearby royal park to search for this one. After reading the cache page description we were quite confident of the type of hide that we would be looking for. As we approached GZ we were fortunate to have no muggles around which was a blessing as the cache had become quite obscured and proved a little challenging to find. After a methodical search the cache revealed itself and our name added to the log book.
Thanks TeamBastholm for the cache.
Thanks TeamBastholm for the cache.
Having been up to Kalbarri for a camping weekend, I stopped off in Gero on the long drive home for fuel and to stretch the legs Only a short stop but of course it was a great opportunity to pick up another couple of caches while here. This was one of the two I grabbed. Parked up nearby then took a short walk over to GZ. Nice and quiet here today, and a warm sunny winter day. I knew what to look for but the GPS was quite jumpy with many potential hiding spots. Patience paid off though as I worked my way around and eventually struck lucky. Lots of natural camo but got there in the end Glad to put a smiley here - TFTC
This one took a while but luckily we had a muggle free search while here. The cache type was exactly what we expected to find and I wish I had a dollar for every one of these we've found over the years. Can understand why this one gets a few DNF's though. It was well covered today and took a bit of locating.
Thanks.
Thanks.
I decided to have a big day and find as many in and around Geraldton today before heading further north. A bit of walking around in circles, but got there at the end. TFTC!!
Last morning in Gero before heading up to Kalbarri. Quick loop to find a few caches while the wife shopped. TFTC
The cache had buried itself after not being found for a while. There was a rusted TB inside the camo (obviously not inside the tiny container inside the camo) which I have taken to try to resuscitate. Thanks for another hide.
No problem with the find here - the problem was that I couldn't find the car keys! Another search round GZ then a retrace of my steps to where I had taken a photo of the Cathedral and there they were sitting on the ledge. Whew that would've really stuffed up my day. TFTC TeamBastholm and kia ora from Aotearoa/New Zealand. # 11,395
Out on IGD in Geraldton for the 3rd year in a row with Barnzy12.
We started the morning a little late compared to a usual geocaching weekend however we did only get into town at midnight so a 8.30 start was early enough!!
The morning started with a extremely poor Find rate at around 40% found. We then headed to the Event and enjoyed a pub lunch and a pint of beer and that would see the luck turn there after.
After the event we headed off with Team Ruphace Matthew and Cathy finding around 20 caches with them.
The highlight was following the lead of reticbob and getting the caches in Moresby Range, going through private land that offered sensational views.
Overall a great day out in Gero, looking forward to seeing some of you again soon at WA Goes Big in Rockingham on the 9th September

Another smiley added here today on our way towards home from a 5 week Kimberley and Pilbara break TFTC
Our last day of caching in Geraldton with iluvtrekking and after a morning visit to Ellendale Pool Mrs iluvtrekking and I dropped off our geo-hubbys along the foreshore cycle trail so that they could grab some finds while enjoying the scenery. We headed off together grabbing finds in the surrounding suburbs. Thanks TeamBastholm
We had a great day an in and around Gerald ton. The boys rode their bikes along the IGD 2016 cycle way while we girls looked for caches a little further afield.
Thanks TeamBastholm
Thanks TeamBastholm

Another fun DNF in the heart of Geraldtowne this time
Queens Park looks rather nice.
But should I be poking around here in the trees by the ex-fountain,
when there is a line up of three vehicles in the nearby carpark with signs on the side saying "Ranger" ??
No not bl##dy Ford Ranger ... council Ranger !!
Sheesh !!
Speaking of colourful adjectives ...
... the crowd assembled nearby on the hill at the back of the carpark were getting more and more vocal as I poked around for the cache
It was like being at a footy match and I was the star full forward ... on the opposition side [^]
Though I think that the 'cheering' would have got securities attention and they would have been chucked out of the ground
No security here (yet),
and I continued me search.
But it was all in vain.
Like Collingwood on Grand Final Day,
I failed to bring home the prize
I waved at the grandstand as I rode off,
and recieved another 'cheer'
Gotta love caching supporters [^]

After a little bit of help from bexx&strawn we got this on our second visit- very cool little cache a new one for us
First find for today. We've been busy so had a few days off caching. That was super sneaky and the look on our faces when Strawn called out 'found it'
Thanks so much for giving us that feeling of adventure and excitement with this find today

Our last day in Geraldton so we headed out to grab a few more before heading home ...... Took a bit of a search and some digging as it was quite buried ........TFTC ....
After rearranging the area and turning over everything we gave up. Is it still there??????
Found at 2:58 PM GAFF1.
Started to search all of the "magnetic" type places and then re-read the cache name and looked down and there it was [^] Found 10c on the ground and tossed it into the water feature for some sort of promised luck
Thanks TeamBastholm.

TFTC! This cache was found on my two and a bit day GeoTrip to Geraldton and surrounds to attend the International Geocaching Day event in Greenough.
The weekend started with a nighttime drive from Perth to Geraldton getting in at 1140pm after finding a couple of caches along the way in the dark. I rose on my first day in town as grabbed supplies before some CBD caching and then some more hides in Greenough before the event. I had a nice little run after the event following the guys chasing a few of the FTFs before getting back to my planned routes to help cleanup a lot of the newly published caches since my last visit in 2013. Had a reasonable day, which went Pretty pear shaped come mid afternoon, with a large number of DNFs in the northern Geraldton suburbs. I returned to my accomodation to freshen up and watch a bit of footy before heading out again on a night time run around the CBD. Big Mistake. had one of those blind nights, where the easy finds were impossible and I resorted to PAF to help guide me on some of the simplest hides!!
I was back on the saddle the next day grabbing a bunch of caches in southern Geraldton before attending the CITO event. Grabbed a few bits of rubbish and got talking to the local COs, where were most amused by my DNFs LOL. They were gracious enough to provide a large number of hints which Ive stored in the memory bank for next year!
Thanks to all of the locals for your hospitality this weekend and I'm looking forward to attending next year! Thanks
Glad to cleanup another dnf from two years back

I should of located this hide a lot quicker than I made it, I must of circled the gz three or four times before spotting the cache, talk about cache blindness, thanks TeamBastholm for the cache and showing us this great little area.
