After a birding tour around Cairns I'm due to fly back to Melbourne today with time for a few more caches before I depart. This proved to be an be an interesting puzzle to solve. I discovered the name of the focus of the search without too many problems but the location of GZ took a little longer and there was some trial and error involved. I eventually reached the right spot but initially saw no seen of a cache. However on further investigation I finally came across the container. Thanks to MattCNS for the puzzle and cache. This was a different approach to a cache and worth a favourite.

Traveled past this cemetery so many times without giving it a second glance or thought. Incredibly interesting despite being unkempt. Well placed cache that I almost gave up on until I tried the unlikely spot.Thank you for creating the cache and a reason to stop.Deserves a favourite.

A definite Favourite Point for this cache! It was stiflingly hot during our visit to Cairns. We were only here for a few days to visit clients, but of course I had to find some caches. Fortunately I was able to obtain the information that I needed in the coolness of my hotel room, so on the way to the airport, we stopped quickly to make the grab. I always find these types of locations very interesting, although sadly some are rarely visited. At GZ, after a look around, the cache was located. Very nice work. Thanks so much Yarum & MattCNS for this enjoyable hide.

Up to now I was not quite successful with my caching activities in Cairns. Today I wanted to change that and started with this one. The most difficult part for me was not finding the right grave but finding the right spot at the grave. Finally I managed...

We are staying nearby and this cache attracted our attention as I'd solved a very similar one last year in Orange NSW.

I'd done all the work before arriving and we went straight to GZ for a quick pick up.

Thanks Yarrum and MattCNS, a favourite from me.

After competing in the Masters Soccer Carnival over the long weekend I tried to squeeze in just a couple more multis and mysteries before heading home.

I’d researched this at home and quickly obtained the information to narrow down the search but the map required to apply this information seems to be missing. Instead I went to a corner, recorded a couple of names and found them on the walls giving me an idea of how the area was mapped. Nevertheless it still took me a while to find the spot to make the cleverly concealed find.

The log ghosted my ink so I’ve added a photo. Thanks MattCNS.

We figured out how to search the site pretty quick, but it still took a long time. I think I looked at the grave 4 times before I realized it was the right one. Then Fung almost fell over accidentally finding the cache. The cache was full of water, but still signable. No mosquitos. This one gets a well-deserved Favorite Point.

29-Dec-22
Thanks for hiding this. Took me a while to find. Had the name but spent a lot of time just walking aimlessly. Once I found the map and nearby grave stones I found the cache. Didn't have a pen, but did take a photo. Hint if you're going to be spending any amount of time in the cemetery bring Aeroguard as the mosquitoes are vicious and hungry. Thanks again, this was a bit more fun than your average cache.

A few head scratching moments trying to find the right grave then some more wondering if i was missing something in the inscription but then whammo. Have always enjoyed having a wander around pioneer cemeteries, thanks for the adventure!

We’ve avoided this one for a long time and had placed it in the “too hard basket”. With a bit of time to spare on an afternoon walk a few days ago, decided to stop in and give it a go. Turns out it was relatively straight forward. Took the gathered information home and confirmed the answers against a few Google searches. Made the dash back this afternoon before it got too dark

This was a neat field puzzle which we solved in less time than we anticipated. A friendly gecko was hiding with the cache. Log very wet but weird it dry and was able to sign. Thanks for a fun one.

12-Jun-22
After a big morning out visiting the wildlife dome and some drive by caching, we stopped for lunch and a bit of shopping then back to our digs for a cold beer and a breather before tackling a few more in the afternoon. I had part of this one solved at home and after having a look around the rotunda worked out where I needed to go. Soon found what I was looking for, had a few moments head scratching then the Aha!! moment and had the cache in hand. Very clever field puzzle, worthy of a FP. TFTC

04-Jun-22
Pre-solves the puzzle at home, but it took me a while to find the map. Then I wasn’t game enough actually do it, but after a while decided nonetheless. The cache was then signed and I was on my way out.

We are in Cairns for a few days, and this morning after a long walk up a steep hill, we decided to take it easy in the afternoon and do a few drive-bys.
We had looked at this one prior to leaving Brisbane, and so had a reasonable idea of what needed to be done.
In the afternoon, it was very peaceful around GZ, and we had plenty of freedom to walk quietly around until we found what we were seeking.
It was then time to hone our searching skills and add a name to the log here.
A crafty and very clever hide, which had us scratching our heads for a minute until we had a lightbulb moment.
Very nice field puzzle!
Thanks Yarrum and MattCNS

I kinda enjoyed this one! The history was fascinating, and just after we'd done our log signing duties, the Kuranda Rail train came by. It looked sadly empty. Lovely cemetary and history, and I enjoyed exploring just a moment before heading back to the wonders of the foreshore.

After a three-day conference that oz_bean_counter and I happened to be attending (along with a couple hundred muggles) we felt that while killing time before flight departures, we ought to squeeze in a few geocaches.

With minimal plan but "within walking distance" we headed off. And after a little bit, we were en route to here. Annoyingly, I had forgotten just how humid and sweaty the tropical north is. But onwards. OBC had done a bit of homework on this and identified it might be enjoyable, also a bit of research to reduce our time spent searching for the required information.

Several uninteresting blocks of closed shopfronts later, we tucked into this small patch of green. We took a few moments to find who we were after, and a few more moments to find what we were after.

I'd say this was a peaceful little area, but the Kuranda Railway noisily chugged by as we strolled along. So naturally I snapped some photos and when I turned around, OBC had located the container. I commented it was a clever geocache, hide and puzzle overall. Logbook signed and sorted at 09:30. Thanks for this cheeky adventure, MattCNS Smile

Great Northern escape 2022 Day 21. Cairns section Day 5. After the first of two dive trips, I had two days in Cairns. Today I set out to work out some multis I have struggled with along the esplanade. I am sure I have failed to work them out before, but this time after carefully reading all the instructions, I was able to work out some numbers that when visited mostly matched the supplied images. It is great to get these off the list of caches to do. I also did some beer labs and a few other scattered caches. It all took longer than expected, but I am happy with the outcome.

I enjoyed working out who I was looking for before I arrived. Once onsite, it was quite an exercise to match up the plot location with the physical location of the grave. Happily when I found the right headstone, the cleverly hidden cache soon was found as well.

Thanks for the cache MattCNS

Nice, straight forward puzzle to solve and I enjoyed it. This place brings back wonderful memories of childhood and collecting pine cones for our Christmas tree. Every time I smell pine trees, I think about this cemetery.
One hint would be to take a photo of the board and work grave stone to grave stone. These old grave stones are very well worn and can be hard to read.
Thank you very much for the cache and the reminiscing

Did a bit of prep work before we arrived but it didn't actually help much when it came to looking for the Beloved Son. Working out the plan of the cemetery is something I reckon only the original grave digger knew. Razz It took two of us quite a long search. Probably a good thing as the dubious encounter that was taking place was a done deal well before we found the right place. A great hide but that's a hyperactive gecko that made me fear for my shorts legs. Surprised TFTC MattCNS.

Did my homework before leaving Brissy a couple of weeks ago and, boy, did it take some research. Think I’m now familiar with all the beloved sons with name’s beginning with the letter D So this puzzle was on my wishlist for Cairns

Pulled in for petrol just up the road and noticed the engine light was on and mysterious letters flashing orange on the dial And running rougher than it had all week. Thought maybe the poor little rental car had overheated and left it in the shade while I ran about in the pioneer cemetery.

There is a lot of info here if you look at everything and soon located the appropriate beloved son. There is more than one option but the listing indicates who to choose Located the correct grid and strolled to GZ... what now? Poked around a nearby tree that provided shade but didn’t give up a cache A previous log by a Brissy mate of mine suggested something needed further examination and it moved and there was the wee cache Not my kinda hide as it’s a bit creepy but logged and wandered back to the street.

Turned on the aircon at the risk of blowing up the engine and made a call and we agreed the quickest option was a 6 minute drive to the rental office. The mechanic had a quick squiz and decided the little car had done the engine coil and I should be transferred and upgraded. Oh if only it’d blown up last week I would have had a sparkly SUV to beadle around in. A quick turnaround and drove into the city to get my nails done and something to eat. I haven’t eaten ham for decades so a bit surprised (and unimpressed) to find it in my vego toastie Some sandwich dismantling ensued but a replacement was not offered

That’s it for today. Going to lie in the pool and then watch Netflix with a

COs- Gradually trying to catch up on a major logging backlog, some I'm sorry to say, stretches back a few years.
Please note- I'm logging each cache on the day that I visited it, not the day I'm logging on. Cheers??

***************************************

Returning home to Brisbane from the QOGM events in Blackall but taking a "little detour" as I often do. This time it was via Barcaldine, Charters Towers and Cairns then down the coast on the Bruce Highway.

This is as far north as I'm going on this trip and I'm staying for a few days as I haven't been here for many years and that was before I started caching.

Came in here for a wander around and made a beeline for the info I needed. Found the beloved son and the cache. All good here when I visited.

The hardest part of finding this cache turned out to be finding a way into this well fenced cemetery.
I was beginning to think the only way in was to die !! [:o]
Some wandering around later and the portal to the underworld was found Big Grin

From there ...
... finding GZ was easy Razz
OK !! Easyish !! Red Face

I finally spied a grave that I had noted as a signpost on the way to GZ Smile
And a right turn and short stroll later,
GZ was found Big Grin

Er !! So now what ?? [:o]

I stood around for a while wondering what to do next.
The cache notes had ended,
so too had me search for this cache I thought Sad

Much standing around later,
and I noticed something !!
A poke ...
... and a cache find Big Grin

I don't think the gecko appreciated me disturbing it though Razz

TFTC and sneaky hide.
I hope the guardian approves Wink

Marathon effort for me to get this one. Second attempt today, went completely off in the wrong direction initially when I misread the chart. Had several reorientations before finally getting on coarse and finding the hide. Noticed some dodgy stuff defacing one of the graves , pointed it out to a security guard who turned up when I was hunting about.

09-Jul-19
I raced around in the rain this morning, checking the entire area for the correct grave. We were booked on a Kuranda tour so I had to surrender or miss the shuttle. After the train dropped us at Cairns Central, we walked home and my partner managed to spot the grave. The lack of surname was what threw me. Thanks for the cache.

Got an early start to the morning and after a DNF close by due to a chirp failure, dropped by this spot for another signature cache I targeted while I'm in Cairns for work. Managed to find references in some sources before leaving Brisbane. Rather a tragic story re the family.

So today at the information source found where I wanted to be. It took some time and a few photos to decipher where in the long sleep paddock I wanted to start looking.

Narrowing down to where GZ should be, found the appropriate spot to begin the search. Spotted something worth investigating and uncovered the cache. Thanks for continuing the life of this cache MattCNS.

Our first mystery cache find! Took a little while as we had to re-read the clue a few times, and wasn’t too sure about poking around too much once at the right location, but rewarded with a nice little surprise for our efforts. And one very startled gecko! TFTC

Lot of history here and it took tassie expat and I quite a while to find the correct site due to the lack of accuracy in how the graves and markers were logged. Interesting place though. Tftc

Frmen1 and I love cemeteries. So much history, so many stories. Took a while to find all the required information. Ended up taking a pic of the map to help us. I loved the restoration group's statement re not working in lines. Sounds like it's been a headache for them. The list is very sobering..many SBs and one that I saw was 20mins. We appreciated the acknowledgement of people other than Europeans who helped make Cairns the place it is. Fav pt given. TFTC

Found after realising the map wasn’t true to scale. (Oblivious) muggles sitting and laying around doing nothing, hopefully didn’t wake up to me. Took the TB just in case. A gecko jumped in my bag. Didn’t sign log as it’s very wet and mouldy - have photo instead. Thanks for bringing me to this interesting and historical cemetery. TFTC.

A bit of research online gave me a name and plot number. First visit I made had many locals at the rotunda as well as nearby benches so I wandered. Cemeteries are interesting to me. Curious engravings like “He died from falling off a bridge” and simply “Infant girl” (which I always want to name) Found the captain’s son quite by accident but couldn’t look for the cache due to the nearby muggles. I took a pic of the grave and left. Looking at the pic and reading the logs at the hotel, I knew exactly where to look. Went back early today. No muggles and a quick find. The 8 legged friend gave me a quick jump and a laugh. Leaving a TB . Fav point! TFTC

Wombles and myself were quick to discover exactly which beloved son we needed to pay our respects to but it took us two goes to actually find the chap. Thankfully wombles worked out exactly which direction to wander.

Once at GZ, we looked around thoroughly but didn't think to look there! Surprised

Ashore from the Norwegian Jewel. I’d done my ‘official’ Cairns sightseeing the previous day, so I was happy to do the remainder by geocaching...

I enjoyed visiting this quiet cemetery and found the appropriate grave, then drew a blank. I looked at my watch...and the rapidly darkening sky and decided to let this one get away without giving it the time it clearly needed...

27-Jan-18
Finally found it, but I had to get a hint from another cacher (that had previous found it).

Previously, I had correctly solved the clues to locate the correct name, and found the gave location on the (as I discovered NOT TO SCALE) cemetery map. Thinking the map was to scale, I got a range and bearing for the grave site. That coordinate led me directly to a grave site, but the wrong site (so obviously nothing was found at that site).
From the help I finally got the correct grave site, which was only a short distance from my calculated coordinates.

21-Jan-18
I looked for this cache, and solved the clues some days ago. I was not sure of the solution (at that stage), but looked for the site given by the clues. With the unsure solution, the missing named head stones, (and the rain) I was not sure of the solution, and found no cache.

I went back to the site to have another go at finding the cache. Taking time with the clues verified I had the name correct the first time. From the map, I verified I had the right location. But a good search at the site did not reveal the cache.

An easy find as I remembered finding the original cache back in 2009. Went straight to GZ Smile TFTC!

### **AUSTRALIA-TRIP 2017** ###
----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
Two weeks in Australia for shooting a part of an international music film production. Started in Sydney for a few days, we continued our journey to Cairns, where we visited the rain forest, several beaches and the Great Barrier Reef.

----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----

At home, as I knew at which hotel we stay here, I searched for a mystery cache in the sourroundig area. I found that great one and started to research the name of the beloved son. It was an exciting adventure to get the result!

At my first morning here, I made a caching stroll through Cairns and started here. At the rotunda I recognized immediately how I can find the container. Nevertheless it was not so easy. I had to move arround a few meters for about 10 minutes. Suddenly the cemetery gardeners arrived for working. They started the irrigaton plant, but this was not a problem for the searching area. I took a lot of pictures as a tourist and pretended to note some inscriptions. As I spotted the right place, they worked only in a distance from about 10-15 meters. So I had to wait until they looked in another direction. With a quick move, I could grab the little container. If you do it in the right way, you don't need a tool!

It was a cool feeling to reach the finishline of that remarkable adventure. And of course, I also commemorated the beloved son! Afterwards I watched some other headstones and the interesting historic discriptions at the rotunda.

Thanks for the thrilling mystery! I left a favourite point here at the cemetery!
TFTC and nice regards from (Lower) Austria/Europe! Smile

TFTC. We had done the research to find the name of the beloved son a couple of weeks ago. Today was the first opportunity we had to drive down the Range from Mareeba to find a couple of puzzles. We found the way to the short cut to GZ, but it still took us a lot of time. The gravestones are not that legible. We returned to the posted co-ords a couple of times. I took a picture and then bingo . I the aha moment! I had found a QR code and I recognized that location on the map. bingo.
The log book is saturated. We managed to make our mark as H&L.

This was a lovely one to figure out and the coords made it a quick route to the cache. I'm delighted to have found my first puzzle cache in Australia and the bird life at the site was amazing! There were birds standing guard at one graveside and they made the most mournful cry. Very appropriate for the location. I will post a picture when I get back home. Thank you for providing a mystery that can be solved. Smile

An interesting spot of local history

Love the mystery of the find hated the placement of the cache.

26-Jul-16
Our cruise ship, Pacific Aria, docked in Cairns overnight and this gave me the chance to get out at dawn today to grab a few caches before things got busy downtown. For the most part, that strategy worked well though by the time I got to the Esplanade, the area was so full of workers, joggers, walkers, exercise freaks and tourists heading out on early morning fishing/reef excursions, that I had little choice but to call it a day and head back to the ship for breakfast.

No such problems doing this one though as it's a place that doesn't attract too many visitors ... except for local history buffs and geocachers like me who enjoy doing cemetery caches. I had done the required homework before heading off on the cruise so, on arrival here, it was a simple matter of finding out where the beloved son was residing and then making my way there (paying my respects to a few other residents along the way) in order to make the find. However, I didn't like where the cache was hidden ... I think of a grave as being hallowed ground and I therefore didn't think it appropriate for the cache to be hidden right on the grave site. If not for that, this would have got a fave point from me ... I liked that it was a different sort of cemetery cache to the norm and that the walk around provided something of an insight into Cairns' past, so thanks for that MattCNS.

25-Feb-16
finally had a go at this one [^]
never attempted the original
... so it was all new for me
did some research prior to my visit ...
but my deductions proved to be incorrect [:o)]
so a bit of onsite research was required to determine the location of the prize

(interrupted some locals using the facilities for shelter from the heat
but I was unperturbed and they didn't seam to mind too much, and they eventually left us to it)

that done - a little stroll and the cache was quickly in hand
thanks for the cache [^]

Lazy day today so we decided to go out for a drive. Saw the cemetry and thought how much history is in there. We were going to pit a cache of our own before realising one already lives here. I spent another hour and a half just wondering around reading the headstones, and there's some interesting stories there.

Another one done. Yay! After recently completing a 4 month streak its nice to just find caches ad-hoc. I love the challenge of the geocache cache hunt - read the notes, decipher the cache requirements, and go searching for the hide. This is an amazing world wide game of hide and seek. I love it!

Thanks go to MattCNS for placing this cache and maintaining it. It's a great contribution to the Geocaching community and much appreciated. I enjoyed finding this one after doing my research before coming to Cairns for work. Once in the rotunda it didn't take too much to work out the next stage of the mystery and find GZ. This cache was another "Found it" for me. TFTC! Cheers. [Blue]Jump Pilot [/Blue]Cool

Our first find for the day. We worked our who we were looking for before heading to Cairns. At the given coordinates we found him quickly and the map led us to gz. I really like how this puzzle is done. Some homework and some fieldwork both required to find it. A favourite point from us for this effort. TFTC

Had to go back to have another go at this one as we are staying just across the road at RPV.
As I had more time and better light, I slowed down and read all the information again and as I knew nothing was to scale I made a better search. Names are so important. Sneaky hide just how do you get that out?? Check for muggles and aaaarrr that's how. Two containers, only signed one.

got all the info so we thought set out to find the cache, but no luck.
I have the feeling we were well out. The co-ords get you where you need to be, but, this beat us.
Travelling from Shellharbour we really want to find one here.

We've lived in Cairns for nearly six years now and haven't had a look around the cemetery. Nice to connect with the local history.
