This area is known as Indian Leap - which is the cliffs on a narrow place on the Chicopee River between the Indian Orchard section of Springfield MA and Ludlow MA. On the Springfield side there is even a street known as Leap Street, or Indian Leap Street, which leads down to the west side of the cliffs. For nearly three quarters of a century there was also a railroad bridge that crossed here - part of the old Boston and Albany Athol Branch ... but that was removed when the line was abandoned. There are numerous stories about people who have jumped to their death here - as well as people who have drowned attempting to shoot the rapids here (see the undated probably circa 1930's photo attached to this log). There's evidence that people are still jumping from here: there's a couple of boards for a ladder in a tree growing in the cliffs and a rope tied to another tree. Alas, with the temperatures well below zero nobody jumping from here today! TFTC

This Lover's Leap is in Bangor, Maine on the Kenduskeag River. The legend goes that two Indian lovers were kept apart by their parents as she was arranged to marry another. The jumped to their deaths rather than be seperated.
This lovers leap is located in Swords Park Billings, Montana. This is an area where more than one have gone over the edge. It is actually a wondrful view at night. lakeman&tagalong
No soft landings here at this lover's leap! The stone dam was built in 1909 for Rocky Mount Mills at 'The Great Falls of the Tar River' in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
This lovers leap is located on US12 in Michigan City Indiana. USA
This is a 4-5 story jump.
If you wanted a softer landing you could aim for the water but that sort of ruins the idea.

As I uploaded the images I realized my GPS isn't in the shot. Please leave up until 12/31 and I will add to this log or you can delete before it gets archived.

1018. So I knew there was a lover's leap in Philadelphia's Wissahickon Park. As the count down to no more locationless closes in, I'm going out of my way to find these. This lover's leap does not have any not that says it is such but a number of other factors else where in the park say it is. See the picture of the maps, it says that the leap is where I took the picture. TFTC!
daddyhole plain is a place where lovers meet and where they also take there lives when we where there flowers had been placed for two lovers who were not allowed to be so now they are together for ever

We found our Lover's Leap in Calgary Canada on a tour of the city this morning. One of Calgary's Lover's Leaps is located on the south end of Crescent Heights overlooking downtown Calgary. TFTH. Check out the pictures!
This leap is located near the home of cacher Golfnutz. Although we dod not reside in Arkansas when this home was built the locals say that the femal half of the original home owner commited suicide by jumping from this bluff.
It is approximately 100 feet to the water from the top. The water is the impounded Arkansas river that forms Lake Dardanelle.

This Lovers Leap is at Beachy Head on the south coast of England. People plummeted to their deaths a few ways here; some got too close to the chalk cliffs which gave way and away they went. Others drove their cars right off the edge (this stopped when the road along the cliffs were built up with mounds and fences). And still others jumped to their deaths intentionally without disturbing the cliffs with tyre marks. The only consolation is that they all had beautiful views of the clifss, sea and the wonderful Beachy Head lighthouse on the way down and out! Thanks.
This is our Lover's Leap also called High Point located California, PA. It overlooks the horseshoe bend in the Monongahela River - the only river that flows north in the United States. Enjoy the photos.

This is PiTan suspension bridge, located in HsinTien City, Taipei County, Taiwan, R.O.C.
"PiTan" is Chinese, means "Green Lake", an old red suspension bridge across on it, the bridge was built in 1936, 200m across and rises 20m above water, it's a famous spot in Taiwan. However, many leapers, lovers and otherwise, have unfortunately taken the plunge off the side of this suspension bridge, it is not only stories but came up. There are many rumors of ghost and phantom in this area now, that's the reason. God bless them.

Located in Bettendorf, Iowa. This lovers leap isn't very high but I've heard it mentioned twice. Neither sources gave a story. Sorry.

Sacrifice Cliff is framed by several historic sites, such as the Yellowstone River, the Rimrocks, and Boothill. Deeply entrenched in legendary tales, the cliff was once connected with a Crow village.
Also Sacrifice Cliff, the site where Crow Warriors blindfolded their horses and rode off the cliff. The sacrifice was made in effort to halt the smallpox epidemic by offering their lives to the gods.
Our Local Lovers Leap is located far above the St.Clairsville,Ohio Shopping Mall in the secluded upper parking lot of the Hampton Motor Inn.The Inn is off State Route 40 There has been one confirmed suicide here by a jilted lover(so the word goes...who knows for sure}The view is spectaculr and it is a favorite spot for sparking couples. Reasor Park in Charleston, IL was the local lovers leap and lovers lane for decades. About ten years ago the city decided to reclaim the area and clean it up. They still haven't figured out what to do with it and its main use seems to be as a dog walk area. (And there is a cache!)
#1047: This Lover's Leap is referred to at http://www.800poconos.com/haunted.html which indicates: Lovers Leap at the cliff on Mt. Minsi at Delaware Water Gap Area, Monroe County, Pennsylvania is where Lenni Lenape princess Winona and Dutch explorer Hendrick van Allen leapt to their death here. Balls of fire are sometimes seen falling from the cliff.

This is the location of a true local Lover's Leap.
It is local because it is our back yard.
The Lover's Leap became reality some 15 years ago. The original owners of our house were an elderly couple. When her health failed to the point of not being able to bear the day to day struggle of life, she ended it all by jumping to her death from this point.
Most people believe it was an assisted suicide but there was never any proof & no charges were ever filed against her husband.
It is 95' from the point to the water. If you jump to the right you could land in the water. Some locals have claimed they did this as kids. If you jump to the left you hit a rock ledge about 6' to 8' shy of the water.

The altitude is 1589 feet at this point. We climbed up the steep side of soft dirt because there was a cache at the top. We took the shortest and steepest way, one step up and sliding two steps down. Finally making it to the top, we were debating on what was the best way down and I suggested sliding on our butts or crawling backwards. I got a little dizzy being at the edge and said, wow, this would make a good lover's leap locationless. Fortunately we saw a gravel road further back that we could have driven on. Of course, we walked this road down and then down the highway to our car.

This "lover's leap" is also the location from the 1991 movie, Thelma and Louise, where they drive the car off the cliff at the end of the movie! Pictures taken at dawn but no lovers sighted here. This parking spot is in the city of Orange, California.

Washington Park - The favorite make-out spot that all teenagers knew about in the Warren, PA area. Unfortunately, some fell in love and went a little over board, well, over...bank. Rumor has it, that many took the plunge from this point, driving their vehicles to the point of no return.
Kickin' already gave you the story in the previous log entry so I won't repeat it. I'll just let you know the the requirements - It's in Warren, PA at Washington Park. Lovers took the ultimate sacrifice and drove over the edge. She didn't mention that they now have large rocks at the edge in an attempt to stop the young lovers before they attempt the leap!
While there are lots of stories, I don't think any distraught lovers have actually jumped here, but it is a very impressive cliff. Cathedral Ledge, located in Bartlett, NH, is a favorite spot for sightseers and technical rock climbers. In the photos you can see a climber on the face of the cliff to give you some idea of the scale. At least one person has slipped and fallen to their death by getting too close to the edge with slippery shoes and there have been several climbing accidents there as well.
This great place is near Hubbardton, VT. It is part of 400 acres of land upon which the generous owner has put a beautiful Japanese Garden with ponds and a waterfall for visitors to enjoy. It is a true delight! We have posted some extra pictures so you can get the full effect of this marvelous place.
You can even see a bald eagle or two if you are lucky!
Did we mention Fall is best???
Thanks for the cache,

I had to drive down the road and took the time to stop at this Lover's Leap, as identified on the quad map. It is on California Highway 152, east of Gilroy.
Caching with Bushwack Bob in 40 Acre Park when we came across this "Lover's Leap."
I didn't know of any Lover's Leaps around. So, I looked through the logs - and found one that was close by. I drive by this every day on my way to work - and didn't know it was a place for star crossed lovers. Attached is my cold snowy picture. Morrison Colorado
This one really caught my attention when I saw it and I immediately thought of Bangor's Lovers Leap. I do not know of any specific stories of lovers leaping from this cliff but last spring a man accidentally fell from this area and lived to tell about it. I am a firefighter in the city of Bangor, Maine and we use this to train for high angle rescues. I have known it as "Lovers Leap" for over 20 years. TFTC #166
This is Montreal Hot Spot, daytime a lot of tourist come here to admire the vue you can even see our Olympic 1976 Stadium in the backround. When the sun sets, a different clientele come here. This is Montreal hot spot.
This is a bit of a leap, because the actual Lover's Leap no longer exists, but this is very near to the original spot. Vienna, Virginia...previously known as Ayr Hill, was settled in the mid-1700's, and grew to be a prosperous town. Late history (19th Century) records that there was a "Lover's Leap" located at the end of this road in Windover Heights (now a Historic District), the road has been named Lovers Lane to commemorate/record the "leap" location. Elevation at this spot is 420 feet. TFTC

This is a neat little cliff that couples or just a group of kids and some beer would go and have fun as well as trash the place. Suprisingly my visit turned out ok, no trash or anything. I will not admit to anything but I have certainly known of this place for years and that is all I am going to say. It seems the reason thearea is so nice is that Croydon Creek Nature Center opened up on the grounds.

George Washington Memorial Bridge
Seattle, Washington
Many leapers, lovers and otherwise, have unfortunately taken the plunge off the side of this cantilever bridge. The George Washington Memorial Bridge, known to locals as the Aurora Bridge, was dedicated on February 22, 1932, George Washington's 200th birthday. It's a beautiful structure which is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearly 3000 feet long and 70 feet across, it rises 167 feet above Seattle's Lake Union. Thank you very much for maintaining this interesting locationless cache opportunity for the past three years.

We found this Lover's Leap near Hannibal Missouri. The story is about an Indian brave who was being chased by warriors who were trying to kill him under instructions from the Indian princess' Chief father. The couple climbed this precipice to elude the pursuers, but after being cornered on the ledge, they embraced and threw themselves to their deaths.

These cliffs are situated near the ACT/NSW border along the Murrumbidgee river in Australia. To be on the safe side, I was located at the bottom of these cliffs. There is a platform located at the top (see photo), which allows you to take in the scenic view before contemplating any leaping. Luckily there was no leaping done while I was there.
There have been two deaths from this cliff in the past year. The first was a lover of sunrises, who may or may not have been drunk at the time.
The second was a young lad with a seriour personal problem, which may or may not have been a lover tif.
My sister who lives just down the road slept through both events.
The cliff top has now had a proper path and some guarding put in place.
