#928 I have spent a fair bit of time working on this puzzle in the passed almost knowing I was chasing red herrings. It would appear Turtle has done the same. But after realising what we may have missed before we headed off towards GZ after work today and picking up a multi. As it turns out the set of coordinates we pulled from this final attempt was the set we’d been looking for the whole time. Was nice to finally put a smiley on this one. Thanks Agent Basil for this one that’s had me stumped for a while
#2808 I had chased a red herring on this cache quite some time ago. Came back this afternoon with another idea that this time proved much more successful. The cache was spotted on approach out in the open. Drained off some water and placed it with a little more protection after logging. Thanks Agent Basil for the cache.
After looking at this again I came up with another more simple solution and to-day had the cache in hand whilst working in the park this morning. TFTC.

Out for a little caching on my four hour window for adventure! Lockdown has bought a totally different approach to caching with the introduction of homework! Much time for homework in fact. Therefore many more puzzles solved, both as a solo and collective effort. Thanks to my fellow geo buddies for assistance when needed.
And in between were a few traditionals, though not nearly as many of them left these days
Logs all in good condition unless otherwise noted.
Thanks to Agent Basil for putting out and maintaining all of these caches for our enjoyment!

Had recently solved the puzzle and with a another cache to find nearby made it a twosome. A quick wander around and the cache was found. A little wet inside but the log only damp. Signed and replaced it was back to the geomobile and off home I went. TNLNSL TFTC
Found this nice Cache together with Dino and Flintstones. Thank you for putting it out and maintaining it Agent Basil.
A walk with the family on Red Hill to get some more of the nice caches around here. A very pleasant walk was had.
Quick find of this puzzle at GZ, all in good order.
Thank you Agent Basil for putting the cache out and maintaining it.

Another day of lockdown, another pressing need for me to take The Dog out of the house for a decent exercise walk in one of the reserves near the house. Today was a fantastic loop up and down Red Hill - there's heaps of little tracks all around here, and beautiful with all the wattle out. Just the thing to cheer a housebound cacher up.
I'm very slowly working my way through these puzzles - I find I can either twig onto them immediately, or else it's a massive effort to get me even close. This was one of the puzzles that I needed an enormous amount of help on, with assistance from a previous finder seeing me get across the line eventually.
This cache was located quickly at GZ. The log was quite damp, however was able to be signed (gently).
Thanks, Agent Basil.

Very excited to finally have my name in this caches logbook!
I have searched for this cache on 3 seperate occasions now, over a span of roughly 3 years too! Each time I have tackled a section of caches in this area I have tried a new set of coordinates. I suppose this is exactly what the CO planned for with this puzzle though, it's not got "Red Herring" in the title for no reason!
I have had my current set of coordinates for a long time now, but haven't come back out here for a while. I was tacking the newest multi in the area however which finally gave me a chance to check my newest coordinates!
I couldn't believe it when I found the cache almost immediately, woooohooo! As the previous finder stated, it was very wet inside. However the logbook is still double bagged, and easily written on, only slightly damp but not enough to make it a problem. The rest of the container is fairly ruined though and could do with a clean-up.
TFTC Agent Basil! Glad to get this cache found!

Today I wanted a GC and a GCA cache for my streaks and I also needed a mystery for the mystery calendar, and this was to be the one. Thank goodness for friends as I needed their help to solve this one and come up with the GZ coordinates. I missed finding the red herring here but I found the real cache which unfortunately was full of water. I emptied it out and was fortunate enough to be able to sign the log as the previous finders had double bagged it. The cache was elevated a little so that it didn't continually become flooded. Hahahaha!
Found with Kittykatch Barb2e and Joolay.
We put the log into a new ziplock bag and cleaned out the cache.

Log wet but could write in it. Put in new bag to try and keep drier. This was a doozy of a puzzle. A lot of fun.
Out caching with Barb2e, Kittykatch and Isopeda on a fabulous day to be outside. Been eyeing these off for years and today getting to pick them up.

Damm I thought I had solved it, but was I disappointed to go out and only find a plastic container with a red herring in it. Back to the drawing board.
This cache really is a muddy soggy mess. Have cleaned out as best I can. Log book is still able to be signed but a new dry plastic bag would help. Tftc
Finally after three red herrings we made it to the finish line as we were in the area today undertaking Agent Basil’s latest meander cache. Lots of kangaroos to enjoy along the way. A cool overcast day making the atmosphere dark and a tad gloomy.
Had the puzzle sort, really sorted, late April but only back this way today.
Unfortunately the contents of the cache are saturated and putrid and appear to be rotting. The cache wet and luckily had a water pen that can write on wet paper . The previous finders also noted the same problem. TFTC Agent Basil.

With GreyHams we headed out on another enjoyable weekend caching mission with the focus on Red Hill. As seems to be the way we have both seen many visits up here and even after today's efforts there will be others. We meander our way about, adding in a few loops and detours visiting each point and puzzle along the way but for the most part it was an effective route around. GreyHams puzzle solving in the last few days uncovering yet another cache hidden up this way!
After the potential forecast of rain it was a pleasant sunny day and lovely to be walking out in the area although the legs did complain along the way in places! With the first part of the hill complete it was off to cache some flatter parts nearby for a well earn't rest and recovery, and a yummy lunch at the kebab shop in Yarrulamla!
Some more suburban caches was in order as we visited a variety of ones we both had yet to find with a few trees visited, will have to return another day for some but GreyHams did do the climb on one T4, I was very impressed!
Many thanks for your cache that helped lead to a lovely day out.
Circled about before the container location was spotted. Was full of water and a bit yuck. Took one for the team and emptied it out and signed the log, a bit damp but sitting on top so just dry enough. The container and contents are still in a bad state though but pleased to have found this one today.

Container was a bit gross, but got to give credit to those all weather logs...they survive anything

Another weekend caching run around canberra with Aquilus1, the focus was again on clean up. Finish some of the multi's we had started, collect on some newly solved puzzles (I was on a roll the last week!) and some of the newer trads that have popped up here and there.
First order of the day was to attack Red Hill... yet again! What made this even sweeter is one of the puzzle I solved just yesterday was exactly on one of the planned routes. We did a few s,all loops, here and there, moved the car and repeat.
Highlight of the day, apart from the company, was the Kebab from Yarralumla shops.... just the best! The tree climb I did was also an adventure to say the least. I don't DO tree climbs.... but this just looked gettable and I surprised myself by hauling my fat arse up there and getting it. The tree may have a few less branches now, and I certainly used one of my lives, but it was something I was proud of...once I was back on the ground.

Our 3rd attempt at GZ that we thought looked really good, like it had potential. However, we came up empty handed - not even a red herring container. Grrrr back to the drawing ️ board.
Nnnnoooooooooooooo............2nd red herring in nearly as many days. We were here today to complete the Federal Golf Course Meander multi cache so thought we’d check another set of coords.
Ok. I guess it’s back to the drawing board. This time I’ll look a little harder. Watch this space.
**16/4/20** Yep, we have another, really, really obvious set of coordinates to try. Just hope it's not the third red herring this time around. But we are not spending another minute looking for another set of coords. Anyway it will be good exercise to go back if this is still not correct.

Damn, damn, damn - yep, we **FOUND** the red herring container. It would have been a DNF had we come up empty handed. We indeed found a container with a very sick fish inside - thought that we should log a maintenance of this one but then thought - better not (
Aaaahhhrrr but the numbers had fallen out so, so easily and so, so quickly - in hindsight it was just too easily. Oh dear, and I thought that I was starting to get good at this puzzle stuff.
At GZ I just couldn’t remember how I had 'figured out' this puzzle the other day and now I know exactly why I had the memory lapse. There was little or no pain or time figuring out the coords in the process to remember - LOL. But after a good meal tonight I remembered within minutes what I had done and now I’m back to the drawing board.
Now I understand why it’s all in the name - sneaky and evil
But at least today we got to walk 6hr 50min up, down and around. Totaled 15kms with ascent/descent of 523m for about 9 caches.

Plan A (a 3 day bush walk to Mt Namadgi) for the weekend was cancelled due to the impending rain, so I resorted to plan B. Something with a good long walk as preparation for next weekend's Australian Rogaine Champs. The southern end of the Bullen range fit that bill nicely - a 4 hour walk. After that I picked off a few newer caches and some solved puzzles as I made my way home. Cache easily found, but as others have said it needs a good cleanout. Solved yesterday. Fortunately I didn't spend too long chasing the red herrings. TFTC.

Ventured back up after a tip from the CO. Found after some chook scratching. No climbing required (but it was fun)! Cache very wet and icky. Needs some love. Thanks Agent Basil. A favourite for the puzzle!
Dragged the boys up. No luck. Thought that solution was too easy! Thanks anyway for the puzzle. We'll be back.
I had looked at this cache on and off for a year. Then viewing another cache (can't even remember what it was), gave me an idea. Turned out it was the right idea.
Today (Father's Day), geopartner and geohound joined me for a stroll on the hill of red. At GZ, we soon discovered the container. Yuck. I think a rusting bottle opener thingummy is created a bit of a mess. But, the log, albeit damp, is still usable. And so my name was entered. TFTC AB

After popping into the lab to attend to some experiments, I decided to clean up a few caches I still had left to collect on Red Hill
The puzzle: After examining this one in detail, I had three possible GZ's to choose from So once in the vicinity of all my GZ's off I went to examine them all-you just never know with this CO so I wanted to cover my bases!
Well found the red herrings lol. So then I'd thought I'd try something quite obvious when I was "on the fly". Well waddya know!...there it is!...you sneaky so and so! lol [:O)]
Thanks for the puzzle and hide, Agent Basil...giving this one a fave!

Wow, this one really was an epic cache hunt!!!
Many hours were spent trying extract coordinates from the listing. 3 treks to what we'd hoped was GZ, only to be disappointed with 3 red herrings - despite Basil informing us that there should only be 2!
We were beginning to think we would never come up with the goods when finally Saf said, "No...that can't be it, can it?" and Basil confirmed - yes it can! What a sneaky..........................
Today was the day we would FINALLY be able to claim our prize. We made the short walk to GZ, and there it was, it all its glory! Sadly the contents did not match the joy of finding it - everything in the container should be thrown out. Some metal objects have mixed with the water and turned the whole thing into a rusty, soggy mess. Surprisingly, the log has survived so far, so we were able to make our mark. We can now close off one of the most frustrating caches we've encountered so far. Thanks Basil!

I see what you did there... Revisiting the puzzle revealed yet another possibility. Bet that's it. Yep, it was! Sorry to say the cache is very wet. Logbook is still usable though. Thanks Agent Basil
Red herring 1 and 2 found. Should have derived a few more possibilities before leaving home. Yet another cache-less GZ for the day!
Accompanied with ALL7 for the day, we enjoyed walk . Signed the log. Thank you Agent Basil
Out today with batteries dying and went for one last puzzle. Caught this herring and he was definitely in swimming in water however log was dry and brand new

Bag errr replaced, who steals bag ? Still very soggy, will replace the whole log in the next few days
Red Herrings everywhere.
Who could have imagined there could be so many little red fish on such a high hill.
We were truly taken in by all the red herrings and visited all the likely spots only to find yet another red herring and two red-faced Domskys.
A gentle remark from CO confirmed our final and likely suspicions! We'd been had......We been Red Herringed! Gone the raw prawn and run far too many kilometres.....all in good fun of course.
Today we we were back up and down that hill again; this time the caching gods were smiling at us...although perhaps smirking might be more accurate. However, we didn't mind! we were just happy to have finally earned that smiley.
Thanks Agent Basil,
Domsky

Back to the drawing board again for us.
There are certainly plenty of Red Herrings on Red Hill.
We had two possible sets of likely looking GZ locations. Neither of those turned up the goods. For one moment we were very hopeful, only to be disappointed. Ummm...very sneaky...
Back to think again....
Thanks AB for the walk and hunt.

Whoops we are logging this very late, which may mean that our logged visit in the book doesn't match the date of this log because I have forgotten when we did this one. Mr winglen solved this months ago, and on a Sunday afternoon we headed out to get this one and another one or hopefully two nearby. We also found the container wet, so dried do out whatever we could. Thanks for the puzzle Agent Basil.
#2300 - 13:15; I had originally come to this area in search of another of the wily foxes hides to celebrate a mini-milestone find, but after an unsuccessful search, I checked for nearby caches and realised I must have made an error as this one was way too close for my other calculation to be correct (which was confirmed and the error corrected on my return home!). Anyway, it was on to this one and somewhere between the herring entree and the 'umble pie I twigged and soon had a rather sodden cache in hand. There were, fortunately, no herring swimming in the pool inside the cache container. Luckily my writing implement allowed me to make my mark in the log, despite it being saturated . Did what I could to drain the moisture before replacing the cache in its hide, but it will need some TLC from said fox (CO) . TFTC Agent Basil, and having identified the error of my ways (I hope), like Macarthur, I shall return in search of that other elusive cache in the next day or so .
8071 + 981 = 9052. Found during a quick meander at lunchtime.
I thought I had several answers - which could all be Red Herrings... Turns out they were ! Then an idea - a re-read - and another possible GZ was spotted.
Did the dash at lunchtime - parked in a familiar spot and walked up and did "Rainy Day", then back-tracked and found this one. Very happy when the container was found - nice work Basil !
Thanks again Agent Basil !! Echoing noikmeister - unfortunately the cache is wet.
TNLN - TFTC !!

579 (210) 2nd time lucky on this one. Enough herrings to sink a fishing trawler! Tks AB.
I forgot to mention that the container had water on the inside and since the log book isn't in a bag it is wet too.
Found at 12:40:00 PM.
You took my spot. I preferred the Archer's take on this.
Thanks.

I've seen one using this technique back in Tassie, so I quickly had coordinates I was pretty sure of, and a visit to GZ today confirmed it.
The log has no plastic bag and is a little damp.
Thanks, Basil.

Solution number 1 - It's 2 esi, but let's check it anyway. "For that, you must cut down the mightiest tree in the forest with ... a herring (a red one)". Damn.
Solution number 2 - It's trickier, but I suspect it's still not right. Damn, I had to cut down the second mightiest tree in the forest with ... another herring.
Solution number 3 - It's unsatisfying, but starting to get desperate. This time I found ... a shrubbery! At this rate, next up I'm going to find another shrubbery, that I can place here, beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher to get a two tier effect with a little path running down the middle.
Solution number 4 - After much investigation I discovered another highly convoluted and diabolical set of coordinates, or one really elegant possibility. But I can't remember which. Finally, I've found the grail! I mean, a cache!
TNLN - Thanks Agent Basil!

7215. [green]I don't know how others got so many solutions. I had one that didn't work, everything else was rubbish or malformed. So instead I took a different tack and viola voici. (I think that's it? - AB can you help?) A terrific day for a walk and so I did over a lot of this bump. [/green]
[blue]Thanks for the cache Agent Basil and the aperitif. [/blue]

Red Herrings? Did someone say Red Herrings? YES! Noted two red herrings in this one very quickly and immediately discounted them as being '2 esi'. However, they were worth checking out just in case. I knew I would need more than that so after much investigation I discovered another highly convoluted and diabolical set of coordinates and one really elegant possibility. My gut feel was the elegant solution but I figured four sets of wouldn't go astray and it was a great day for being out with the dog anyway. Really enjoyed this one and it certainly gets a favourite point from me.
Found on a nice caching day with alpacattacker. Unfortunately he can't log this one right now because he isn't a premium member, but he still signed the log. When I first looked at this, I had no idea what to do. The next day or something, I was with SdL caching and he gave me a small hint for it, from there it was quickly solved and then the co-ords were ready to go - thanks Sol! What a good idea for a puzzle, not everyone thinks about that all the time - very nice! It was a quick walk from the main road through a very familiar area with some steep parts. Once at GZ, the cache was quickly found. Nice little niche in a very lovely area. TNLNSL. TFTC AB, very tricky puzzle!
Found it this time! Between showers! Have seen this type of puzzle before - but did you think I would recognise it? It wasn't until trying all the other red herrings (cute they were too - in their little boxes) that it finally dawned on me! But no doubt it won't be the last time I'm coming up this hill! Thanks AB!
P.S. - Upon opening the cache, it appears that I have found it before

Had solved this one acouple of nights ago and was in the area today with captain Tomato. Got to gz and made a quick find TFTC
Decided to go and get this one after having an early mark off work. Taking advantage of the early mark we decided to pick up a few waypoints for others whilst on this side of town.
We had 3 alternative solutions to pick from, so we started at our first attempt and luckily enough we selected the right one of the 3 to do first. Very sneaky took some thinking. TFTC

I had solved 3 solutions for this, but the pessimist in me said that that wouldn't be enough! However, decided to give it a go anyway, and sure enough - no cache! Oh well, back to the drawing board.
It was a meandering journey that lead me to the cache. I managed to avoid the first barrage of red herrings and contemplated the meaning of life. This did not help much! Then I received a nudge from the CO and I got with the plan, or so I thought.
Off to find the cache but a severe bout of cache blindness left me empty handed. Mmmmm must be on the wrong track. Must have got the wrong end of the fish? Sought guidance from Agent Basil who set me straight so out again and sure enough there it was! Now why did not look there before? Just too absorbed with the other spots I suppose..... As they say, thanks for the fish!

After finding 2 red herrings and 1 "nothing" yesterday, I had a rethink, a sleep and a bigger think. Managed to extract another set of coords out, golly, I hope there isn't more........ Armed with the new coords I ventured forth and...........found it! Well done AB. Thanks.
Had THREE sets of coords, so off I went. Found 2 red herrings and one nothing! There's a 4th?????
2137. Hip hip hooray! I do love to part take in piscatorial activities, and I did catch my fair share here, but today I returned and found a log book with some familiar names in it and one that I could sign. Now that brought a smile to my dial. Definitely a favourite for all the fun and organising.
Thanks AB for a rip snorter!

The fog or should we say cloud finally lifted this morning when Miss Stormcatcher fished out a set of coordinates from all the Herrings and today there was no fish to be had.
The journey started yesterday when Miss Stormcatcher sent Mr Stormcatcher out on a mission with the first set of coordinates that were communicated incorrectly that lead to a hidden munzee...totally random I must say and had me scratching my head. So once that was all sorted it was off to another spot that came up empty as well....mmmm
With the FTF gone there was no real pressure to solve this but we were determined not to be filtered . Another set of coordinates rewarded us with a little fish but still no cache. Feeling very beat I headed back down to the car and it we decided to sleep on it.
So this morning the breakthrough came and we were both very confident that we had it nailed. Still we were nervous as we approached the suspected GZ so we were very relieved to finally claim the smiley.
This was definitely an interesting journey for us, we feel a bit silly we missed it the first time but it did mean we got the full cache experience . Have to give this a favourite for its crafty execution and the journey to the end. Thanks Agent Basil

3TF!
Darn, Darn, Darn! I knew what had to be done as soon as it was published but I just didn't have any time at that point. I was hoping that it wouldn't have been found by the afternoon. But alas, it was not to be. Got to GZ and there was a shifty looking character lurking in the area. I waited for him to leave as he was obviously not a cacher. A quick find at GZ. Left 2 x TB's, took 3 x TB's. TFTC AB, 2nd of your's for the day!

Mr Stormcatcher was sent out solo with some possible coordinates and all he found was a cute little red Herring. Tried a few other possible combinations without much luck so I guess it's back to the drawing board...I just think Miss Stormcatcher loves to send me out on wild goose chases up and down hills.
Look forward to solving this one!
Surprised I didn't run into anyone considering.

How does it go, hook line and sinker! Not sure if I am brave or plain stupid for logging this DNF, but I'll be having fish for dinner. A FTFARH for me. Yes I found a fish. I came armed with two sets of coords, but neither were good enough to get me a smiley. I now have another set, wish me luck!
2TF @ 12:40. For some reason, I immediately saw the solution of this puzzle. But I was not unhappy about that. Discovered three TBs in the cache. TNLN. TFTC Agent Basil!
*FTF* just after after 12.00pm...
After looking at the listing, I grabbed some numbers and checked the maps....yep, that seems possible....and it's in Basils favourite playground, so it was off to check it out. Once at my GZ, I didn't find anything that resembled a cache, so I guess that was a red herring afterall. I then took another look at the listing.......and managed to pluck yet another set of numbers out. So, it was off to try again.
Arrived at this GZ, not toooo far away from my first one, and low and behold after a short search, the cache was in hand......and even after a false start, my luck was still in and the log book was blank. Then I sat and wait for about 15 mintues in case any of the lunch time crowd turned up, but alas, no-one did.
Thanks Basil, another take on a puzzle and a little tester as well.......
Left 2 TB's to continue their journey
