Situated on a slope overlooking Rock and Squaw creeks in the Missouri River bluffs, the one-story brick school is a remnant of the defunct village of Rock Bluff. Established by Joseph Diven Patterson and built in 1870 as the Naomi Institute, the building was originally a two-story structure. The Naomi Institute was known as one of the leading educational institutions in the state and the first institution in the county to offer secondary-level education. The school served as the Naomi Institute for only two years, and in the fall of 1872, the building became known as the Rock Bluff School.
The town, which no longer exists, was sometimes known as Rock Bluffs, as on the monument in the photo.

Cotati Downtown Plaza
California Registered Historical Landmark No. 879

Cotati is a town very near and dear to us- Order drives by this plaque every day! Cotati is described as "The Hub of Sonoma County." It is an old town that used to be a large cattle and sheep ranch. Page's Station, a train stop along the route between Crescent City and San Francisco, was built in the late 1800s. By 1894, Page's Station became the Town of Cotati, complete with a general store, a post office, and a town center.

Text from the landmark:
"Cotati's hexagonal town plan, one of only two in the United States, was designed during the 1890s by Newton Smyth as an alternative to traditional grid land planning. The six-sided town plaza was designed for founder Thomas Page, and each of the surrounding streets was named after one of Page's sons. "Cotati" derives from "Kotati", a local Pomo Indian chieftan [sic]."

This the entrance to Fort Rodd Hill, unfortunately closed at the time I went to snap a shot, but open most other times. During the summer it is a popular tourist attraction, especiall for old war buffs, since it has been watching over esquimalt harbour (canadas largest west shore naval base) for many many years. Inside you can find the fort basically as it was in WW2, with other parts dating back much longer.
Also contained in this park is FIsgard lighthouse, one of canadas oldest.

As one of the most revered trees in the nation, the CREEK NATION COUNCIL OAK TREE, has stood for centuries as a symbol of the strong spirit of Tulsa's early settlers. As history tells, it was under this tree in 1836 that the Lochapokas of the Muscogee "Creek" Indians created a ceremonial fire using live coals carried from their Alabam homeland, and began their new life by establishing Tulsee Town.

Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library, E. Main St. in Waynesboro, PA. The library is situated beside the old market place, currently borough hall, which is also on the National Register.
The original brick house was built by a Mr. Bittinger in 1814. Before it was remodled for a library, the house had 16 rooms. Interior woodwork was supposedly done by Eli Horner. The porch was added after the Hamiltons bought the property. Stories persist that a false fireplace concealed a passage that led under the alley to the neighboring building to the west. Slaves were allegedly secreted there as part of the Underground Railroad movement.
Alexander Hamilton, not the history book figure, is said to have walked to Waynesboro from Chester County, where he was a wagon-maker and blacksmith until his home burned in 1817. Once in Waynesboro, he built a brick home and shop on Mechanic Street, (now Church Street), married his neighbor's daughter and invested in real estate. He bought the library building in 1841.
Hamilton's granddaughter, Jane Stover, married E. I. Yost. It is she who willed the property to the town to be used as a library. Although the bequest was made and accepted in 1943, financial and other concerns prevented the library from opening to the public until April 22, 1955.

Forgot to log this one last summer after visiting it on July 9th. Happened to see the registration plaque and remembered that it fit a locationless cache description.
History:
Merrimac's first permanent settler, Chester Mattson, obtained a territorial charter in 1848 to provide ferry service across the Wisconsin River at what is now the town of Merrimac. The State Legislature of 1851 authorized a road, subsequently to become State Trunk Hughway 113, to connect the settlements of Madison and Baraboo via Matt's ferry. Today, the Merrimac Ferry is the lone survivor of upwards of 500 ferries chartered by the territorial and state legislatures before the turn of the century.
The fee charged by early ferrymen for taking a team and wagon across the river was weel earned for their muscles provided a giid share of the ferry's power until a gasoline engine was added around 1900.
The ferry changed hands several times before Matt's Ferry Road was added to the state system in 1923 and Columbia and Sauk Counties took over its operation. The name Colsac is a phonetic derivation of the tow county names. The State of Wisconsin assumed responsibility for the maintenance and operation of the ferry in 1933, after which the service was provided without charge.

The newest ferry, named the Colsac III, was put into service in the spring of 2004 and can transport up to 15 automobiles and pickup trucks (as well as motocycles, bicycles and pedestrians) across the Wisconsin River in about 6-1/2 minutes. The Colsac III replaced the Colsac II that had a capacity of 12 autos and was slightly slower.

The ferry was listed (#74000330) on both the State of Wisconsin and National Register of Historical Places on 12/31/1974.

This is the Nemacolin Castle on Rt 40, Brownsville, PA. It is now a museum, open for tours. Enjoy the photos.

The most outstanding early structure in Brownsville and perhaps along the National Road in Pennsylvania is Jacob Bowman's old trading post at Redstone Old Fort, now known as Nemacolin Castle. There are three existing sections to the building: the original trading post, the 1800s addition, and the Italianate addition of the mid-1800s. Currently maintained and operated by the Brownsville Historical Society, it has been open to the public from Memorial Day through Labor Day since 1962.

The Royal Alexandra Theatre, 260 King St West, Toronto, Ontario, Canada was designated a national historic site because it is a nationally significant example of a theatre which was built specifically for the presentation of live theatrical performances.

The Royal Alexandra is an intimate but lavish version of a traditional 19th-century theatre built exclusively for live theatrical performances. Designed by noted Toronto architect John M. Lyle (1872-1945), who had worked in theatre design in New York, the Royal Alexandra was a direct importation of the small, lavish and more intimate type of theatre being built in New York. Its design allowed a relatively large number of seats in a deceptively small space. The Royal Alexandra was one of the last theatres of its type built in Canada and likely the best surviving example. Since its rescue and rejuvenation by Ed Mirvish in 1963, the Royal Alexandra has played a central role in the social and cultural life of Toronto. Its Beaux-Arts style continues to provide an elegant setting for theatrical and musical events.

This is why I love Geocaching! It takes you to places you haven't been and introduces you to new places. If it weren't for Geocaching I would not have stopped at The Hotel Colorado. It turns out we had a very nice time looking at the Christmas Decorations, we went inside and saw the Teddy Bear Christmas Tree. The Hotel Colorado is the birthplace of the Teddy Bear!! REad on for more cool facts!
The Hotel Colorado is located in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The Hotel Colorado was built in 1893 during an exciting time in the history of America’s west. Silver mining, transcontinental railway expansion, polo competitions, and the natural hot springs spa, each played a part in enticing the wealthy to the rugged mountain town. It is modeled after the sixteenth century Italian Renaissance Castle Villa de Medici, Hotel Colorado's redstone walls mirror the natural beauty of the surrounding red canyons. It was the area’s first electrically lit hotel and it boasted myriads of water features, including a courtyard fountain spraying skyward one hundred and eighty-feet.
• Society’s elite enjoyed Hotel Colorado polo events and miracle cures from the healing hotsprings pool.
• Once the temporary U.S. White House, Hotel Colorado hosted presidents and nobility.
• Theodore Roosevelt’s early twentieth century bear hunt produced the legendary birthplace of the Teddy Bear.
• Serving a variety of needs, the Hotel became home to a Naval Hospital and a school.
• Legends surrounding the Hotel ghosts create speculation of supernatural phenomena.
It is nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

A Moorish Castle listed in National Register of Historic Places

Just south of Warsaw on the Mississippi there stands a Moorish castle. Inside, ornate wooden lattice work twists shadows up the walls of a narrow stairway. Railings, doors, windows, ceilings, all are beautifully carved. It is as if you stepped into a rich merchant's home in northern Africa but there is no furniture. George Metz, rich playboy and world traveler of the late 1800s, built the castle for his sweetheart who died before its completion.

Rumor also has it that Metz buried his pet dog Bingo with a big cache of gold somewhere on the property. Numerous attempts to exhume Bingo prove fruitless.

This historic marker is located at a railway museum that marks the spot of a town known briefly as "Pinacate."
In the early days, Pinacate was the base camp for area gold miners. Apparently some struck it rich but the gold didn't last as long as other more celebrated mines. Posting pictures of the historical marker and the little geo-rangers who flanked it! An authentic building is preserved behind the marker and originated from the miner's camp. Pictures of this are here too, including a geocacher who didn't make it!

THIS CONCRETE MARKER WAS ERRECTED IN 1911, AND IS one of the many used by surveyers to determine the sexact boundary between the U.S and CANADA. The ST.Clair river was orriginally designated as a boundary line by treaty 1783. The first detailed survey from ST.Regis on the ST.Lawerence to lake of the woods was carries out under the terms of treaty of Ghent 1814. It was directed by a british commissioner John Ogilvy. A more precise delineation of the whole international boundary was ratified at Washington on January 11,1909

FORT COOPER STATE PARK

Spring-fed, 160-acre Lake Holathlikaha lured battle-weary volunteers to its banks in 1836, where they built and defended a frontier fort. The fort was named for major Mark Anthony Cooper, commander of five companies of the First Georgia Battalion of Volunteers during the Second Seminole War. In April, 1836, Cooper's duty was to protect the sick and wounded left behind during Gen. Winfield Scott's long march to present-day Tampa.

For 16 days, Cooper and about 360 men watched and waited, drinking from the waters of the lake and scanning the woods that rimmed its eastern shore. There were several skirmishes with the Seminoles, but the volunteers held their own. On April 18th, Scott returned with supplies and reinforcements, leading the men of Fort Cooper from their frontier sanctuary into new adventures.

The 710 acres that would become Fort Cooper State Park were acquired in 1970, and the Park opened in 1977, six years after excavations had confirmed Fort Coooper's shape and size - roughly square and nearly 200 feet long on each side.

There is a re-enactment held at the Park each Spring. Also, each December the Park offers its "Nights of Lights". Thousands of lights are strung throughout the Park and visitors drive through to enjoy the sight. This year the Nights are 12//16 & 12/17.

Also note that there are four caches hidden within the Park at this time, and the Park management welcomes geocachers.

The Oliver H. Hovda House is located in Absarokee, MT. Eleven days before the Crow Indian Reservation territory was formally opened to settlement here (October 15, 1893), Sever Simonson and his family claimed squatters rights here in the valley located between the Stillwater and the Rosebud Rivers. Oliver Hovda his 25 year old nephew soon joined him and they established a trading post that was soon to become the Absarokee Cooperative Trading Cmpany. Hovda also buildt a saloon, livery stable, hotel and blacksmith shop. He became the first postmaster in Absarokee and took Belle Wilson for his wife in 1903. The home you see was commissioned in 1903 and finished in 1904.
It's period of significance 1904-1941. The home is currently a restaurant, hostel, and trade store specializing in hand woven rugs and goods from Kurgestan. It was placed on the Historic Record in 2003. Horseman and Jitterbug205

FLORAL CITY, FL - THE AVENUE OF THE OAKS

I live in Floral City and we take great pride in our Avenue of the Oaks, aka Floral City Historic District. Coords are for the Secret Garden which contains a cool brick labyrinth. The best times to visit are the first weekend in December, when we hold our Heritage Days celebration, and in February for the Strawberry Festival.
On the Saturday of Heritage Days (this year it's 12/03/05), many of the old homes in the historic district are open for touring.

CITRUS COUNTY COURTHOUSE - INVERNESS, FL - "THE KING WAS HERE"

Citrus County, FL was founded in 1887. Shortly after, the original settlement, called Tompkinsville, was renamed Inverness meaning "at the mouth of the river" because of its relation to Lake Tsala Apopka. In 1891, Inverness was elected as the county seat. The first courthouse in Inverness was a rented wooden building. Several years later, a wooden Victorian-style courthouse was constructed
and remained until 1912. It was then that the Board of County Commissioners moved the Victorian building out of the area and built the "new" courthouse, now known as the "Old Citrus County Courthouse", for $55,885.

In 1961, Elvis Presley made a movie in Citrus County called "Follow That Dream". Major scenes were filmed in the old courthouse as well as other locations around the county.

Today Inverness' Old Courthouse is a beautiful building that houses a gallery that offers changing exhibits. My favorite was last Spring's exhibit of The Highwaymen http://highwaymenartwork.com/about_the_highwaymen.html.

Menlo Park, CA. We go by this old gatehouse all the time, but never stopped to explore. Tonight, we explored the house and grounds just after sunset. This cache is a great idea! Thanks.

The Barron-Latham-Hopkins Gate Lodge, or the Gatehouse, is the oldest existing structure in Menlo Park and the last surviving gatehouse in the state of California. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and is important as a last remnant of the fabulous country estates that were built in the area during the 1860s.

The Gatehouse was built in 1864 by William Eustace Barron who was a leading capitalist during California’s formative days. It was the entrance to a 280 acre estate that extended from the Caltrain Railroad tracks to Middlefield Road and from Ravenswood Avenue to the San Francisquito Creek. There were several outbuildings on the estate that supported a 40 room mansion.

In March of 1996, the Junior League of Palo Alto•Mid Peninsula, along with the City of Menlo Park, undertook an historic renovation of the Gatehouse that was completed that August when the League became sole tenant of a wonderful and historic old building.

The above info is from the website of The Junior League of Palo Alto-MidPeninsula: http://www.jlweb.org/paloalto/npo.jsp?pg=about7

Des Braves Park is where the famous battle of 1760 was fought (pitching Lévis against Murray). On this site one can observe: the monument dedicated to the Braves of 1760.

The Des Braves monument, dedicated to the French soldiers killed at the battle of Sainte-Foy on April 28, 1760, is public property. This national monument was executed by Charles Baillargé. Measuring 75 feet in height (22 metres), it consists of a fluted cast-iron column. At the very top stands a ten-foot high statue of Pellone, the Roman war goddess.

Mission St. Louis is listed on the National Historic Sites of Canada as St. Louis Mission. However, locals prefer the French designation since it was a French outpost in the 1600's. It is the site where Jesuit Fathers Brebeuf and Lalement were captured on March 16, 1649 by the Iroquois to be martyred later the same day at nearby St. Ignace. Nearby are the Martyrs Shrine and the reconstruction of Ste. Marie Among the Hurons(both visited by Pope John Paul II in 1984). Mission St. Louis is very hard to find since the signage does not correctly point to the entrance roadway.

The J.D. DeFine building is on the corner of Market and Canal STreet in Navarre, Ohio. The building use to be a private home with a grocery store on the front and a bar in the back side. J. D. Define lived to be 100 years old and still had some grocerys for sale. It was auctioned off and a nursing home chain bought it. It is now used for meeting rooms in the grocery store and bar. The rest of the private residents is used for out of town guest. It is furnished with beautiful antiques. It also can be used for local or private parties. We had my Mother's 80th birthday party there this year. I was by myslef so I held up my GPS in corner of picture.

This church is one of the oldest Baptist Churches in Knoxville. It is sandwiched in between the City-County Government Building and a Bank of America highrise. There is not much room for expansion and they have had to build more parking back behind the church. The building extends quite a bit back behind, but I gather that was addied in later years to accomodate growth.

You can't really make it out in the picture, but there is a satellite dish/receiver attached to the bell tower of the steeple. It was just knid of odd to see that kind of thing on a church steeple.

Guess they really do have a hotline to God Wink

This Courthouse is still in use. It houses the County Clerk's Office where you get you license tags renewed and a few other clerk type offices. It has been completely restored.

One odd thing though... they have installed a drive up window where you can renew your car tags around back without haaing to go inside. (parking is at a premium down here) The drive up to the window is so small, the only thing you can drive in there is a small car. I guess that back alley was originally made to fit horse and buggies.

Up until the late 1970's this hotel still operated as a upscale hotel. In the 1980's it fell into disrepair and was seemingly abandoned for almost 15 years.

It has been completely restored now and I think it houses some offices. I don think it has reverted back to a hotel.

This place has a lot of history associated with it. One thing that most people may not know is supposedly Hank Willliams died here in his car. He and his driver had stopped in Knoxville to do a show. Hank was said to have "fell asleep" in the car while his driver was inside the hotel getting ready for them to leave for the next show. His driver said he thought Hank was asleep , and it was late, so he just got in the car and drove to the next show location up in West Virginia. Hank never stired all the way there. When the driver got the WV, he tried to wake Hank but he was dead.

This property is on the National Register of historic places located in Lucas, Kansas. The creator of this concrete made of limestone collection was Samuel Perry Dinsmoor, a retired schoolteacher, Civil War vetern, farmer and Populist politician. Gripped by a deep desire to create at age 64, he started builing the Garden of Eden as a residence in 1905. His house is made of limestone cut to look like logs. His sculputure garden surrounds it. He opened his home as a tourist attraction in 1908, even as his vision of bibical and modern man was being molded out of 113 tons (2,273 sacks) of concrete. He continued building up until his death in 1933. Dinsmoor had prepared for his death by building a 40-foot-high limestone mausoleum in one corner of his garden. When he died, he was embalmed and put on display. Even after 60 yrs. you can look through his glass-sided coffin and see the moldering creator of this heavenly splendor

The Hall was dedicated on November 26, 1890. The International Order of Odd Fellows has an interesting history going back to the mid-eighteenth century; see their web site at www.ioof.org for information about the Order including theories on how they arrived at their name. The Hall is the sole remaining example of the Italianate style in Lake Oswego's public buildings. In 1990, the structure was carefully restored and the interior remodeled into apartments, and these are occupied today.

Park of the Canals is a city historical park. The canals are the ancient Hohokam Indian canals that brought water from the Salt River to their fields. I chose this place because of my past as an archaeologist. On my first dig, I had to excavate a canal. Although I love excavation, canals are miserable things to excavate.

Known as Sky City, Acoma Pueblo was strategically built on top of a 357-foot sandstone mesa many hundreds of years ago for effective defense against raiders. Spanish conquerors learned of this defensive stronghold when they entered New Mexico in the 1500s. Acomans claim that their 70-acre village is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the U.S.

Acoma was nearly destroyed when Gov. Juan de Oñate and 70 of his men retaliated for the killing of 13 Spanish soldiers by the Acomas when they tried to take grain from the pueblo storehouses in 1598. As a restitution of peace, the San Estéban del Rey Mission was built in 1629 and completed in 1640 under the guidance of Friar Juan Ramírez. Both the mission and the pueblo have been designated as Registered National Historical Landmarks.

Today, fewer than 50 Acomans live in Sky City year-round and the remaining residents live in nearby villages. Only on feast days do all the Acomans gather on the mesatop. Census 2000 figures indicate a total of 2,802 Acoma villagers.

Millington, Michigan
My work "hometown". This building, originally a bank, is now the Millington-Arbela Historical Society Museum (a noble use). Here's what I found:
The former Millington Bank Building is a one-story commercial building with split fieldstone walls and a flat roof which slopes gently toward the rear. The building faces east on State Street in Millington's small central business district. It has ground dimensions of twenty-four feet in width by thirty feet in depth. Broad, arched openings capped with cut fieldstone voussoirs enfold the recessed entryway, on the south, and a tripartite window with double-hung-sash center section, on the north. A simple cornice supported by evenly spaced brackets extends across the facade below a low parapet. The building's front walls below the cornice display a suggestion of coursed ashlar construction, while the austere side and rear walls exhibit a construction of uncoursed rubble masonry. The interior was and is a single room. A brick vault against the north wall toward the rear remains in place. Most of the historic interior finish has been lost during successive remodelings, but the pressed-metal ceiling remains intact beneath the modern dropped ceiling. The building has been recently acquired by the Millington-Arbela Historical Society and will be refurbished, with surviving historic features restored, to house the society's museum.
The Millington Bank Building is a landmark in the Millington area because of its distinctive split-fieldstone-wall construction. The building served as the home of the community's first banks from the 1890s to the early 1930s.
Period of Significance 1898-1934

TFTC! So nice to have history so close!

This cool spot is Causland Park in Anacortes, Washington. Constructed between 1919 and 1921, this park was designed by John Baptiste LePage, a French-Canadian architect. The park is surrounded by walls made of multi-coloured pieces of rock collected from local quarries in free-flowing serpentine designs.

We found Prospect Point at the northern end of Stanley Park in Vancouver. The plaque tells the story of the steamship 'Beaver'.
"Here, on 26th July, 1888, the steamer 'Beaver' was wrecked. This historic vessel was built for the Hudson Bay Company at Blackwall, England, in 1835, sailed for this coast immediatly and was the pioneer steamship of the Pacific Ocean. The story of the 'Beaver' is the story of the barly development of the western coast of Canada."
More info about the 'Beaver': http://www.historylink.org/essays/output.cfm?file_id=1946
There is also another plaque for the 'Beaver' at the coastline and a lighthouse named Prospect Point.

Found this while looking for part of a multicache. This old station is still in very good condition and the lawn was being cut as we were there.
