Find # 14425Headed down Castlemaine way to have a look around the springs and grab some caches in the area. For a few years I've wanted to check out the Vaughan Springs ad this area south of Castlemaine. The whole area down here just seemed to be slower. No hustle or bustle at all, just the way I like it.Thankfully the rain held off, for most of the day, and the bush tracks I chose, for the out of the way caches, were 2wd friendly making for a great arvos caching.Compared to today, they done things tough back then. And knew how to do it too as it amazes me how so much is still around n standing.TFTC juanmatt
Off the beaten track alright, had good fun searching here. Little nerve wracking when the kids wanted to play up top. Gem of a spot. Fp from me.
How cool is this place! Leaving Castlemaine Lewis told me stories of his family tradition of playing cricket at the Campbell's Creek footy ground. We detoured out this way on the way home and this place is so cool. Thanks for the cache!
My little brother Austin was so proud with himself for finding this one, great spot with the old gold rush stuff
Geocaching is a game that just keeps on giving. This is another fantastic hidden gem which i have discovered during my cache hunting. Absolutely fantastic spot.
A day of geocaching with SMS83 and our geokids around Daylesford and Vaughn Springs saw us head here. I had a DNF here many years ago so was happy to make a quick find today. This is such a remarkable place hidden off the beaten track. A definite hidden treasure worthy of a fav point. Thanks for highlighting the area with a cache.
Cleaning up some caches in the area. And came across this one. Went and explored the area and poked my head into a hole in the side of the structure and a few birds flew out, needless to say it scared me quite abit. In a time where toilet paper is pretty rare, this wasn't the best thing to happen!!.
But found the cache after abit of searching around all in good order. Thanks for the find!

This one took me a while to find, it was hidden very well.
Amazing place, I had no idea this was here

What a very interesting place to visit and walk around it. Would have loved to see it in its hay day! Great piece of history here. Did not take long to find this cache - 2nd spot we looked in as sometimes caches hidden in these types of areas can take some time we have found in the past!

What a gem! Based purely on the description of this cache's location, it was definitely on the to-do list today.Perfect navigation by the geoson got us to where we needed to be, and we checked out the tiny yellow toadstools growing on the ground. TFTC
A pretty quick find as was talking to Mrs inspectorrex and looked down and there it was. A nice historical area. TFTC inspectorrex and team.
On a well earned break in Castlemaine and I’m spending the time just touring the whole area, enjoying the sites and picking up caches as I go.
I think this one is just as impressive as the one at Garfield.
I suppose not being on the map keeps it as a Geocaching secret for us to find.
Just the engineering that goes into these structures and would have been interesting to see the water race as well.
Thanks juanmatt TFTC.

We decided to go for a country drive today from Melbourne.
We had no particular plans, but we thought we would visit some of the smaller towns around the Bendigo area. We ended up not getting to Bendigo today but had lots of fun checking out the towns of Malmsbury, Taradale, Vaughan , Fryerstown, Chewton and Yapeen. Vaughan Springs is a really nice spot with a big slide for the kids to play on that we had never been to before.
This cache is exactly why we geocache - to find places that we would not find otherwise!
This is a magnificent historic site which isn't signposted and we would never have found it without your help.
This gets a fave from us, not just for this site, but for all the fantastic places you have brought us to today. Thanks juanmatt for being our tour guide! Keep it up please!

When we pulled up here I wasn't sure I would be able to negotiate the fence but with a little help from Kenare the task was made a lot easier than expected. I was very glad to be able to investigate this amazing area, I can't even fathom how hard this construction would have been back when it was undertaken. The ingenuity of the miners never ceases to amaze me.
This is another incredible location that I would never have come across if it were not for geocaching so thanks for the hide junmatt. Favourite point added

Mostly blue sky, no wind and warm sunshine - what a change from the past few days. Perfect weather for caching out to the west of Kyneton.
What an amazing old piece of infrastructure, yes it certainly makes the Garfield Wheel seem relatively small. A FP for location.
Thanks to 'juanmatt' for the hunt and cache placement

Wow this place is amazing. And slippery gets a favourite point for being so beautiful and peaceful. ~ Crazy Creels
It was getting dark now as we started heading back south for home after a great afternoon caching with DAB avoiding the rain and collecting "Hidden Creatures" souvenirs. That didn't stop us from trying our luck with this cache after reading the interesting write up we just had to investigate. Once we found the best place to park and walk in without bush bashing we made our way to GZ. The torches were needed to see the enormous cavity left by the wheel....it must have been ginormous!!!
Thanks juanmatt for placing a cache here, showing us this historic gem.

While enjoying my lovely warm house, I received a message from The_Tritonz. "What are ya up to ?? Do you want to grab some caches ?? Hmmm... I'll have a look out the window, grey clouds and strong winds. I'll just check the weather online, freezing cold, with a high chance of rain. With all of those things considered.... I said YES !! [B)] [B)] So a quick bag pack and we were soon off. We did have brief periods of sunshine, but the majority of the day was cold, windy and wet.
It didn't dampen our spirits though, we still found a good mix of hides. All in all, another enjoyable day exploring our great countryside.
Even though we found this hide by torchlight, the structure here was amazing. A great example of engineering from yesteryear. The scale of the wheel must have been amazing, this was my cache highlight today. I can't believe this cache has no favourite points. Thanks for showing me this fascinating piece of history. A fave point from me, it's one and only in 5 years !! TFTC juanmatt

sorry for late log, thought I'd done it but no.. I joined in with Claybol and Kazba16 to find this cache and enjoyed the scenery and the relics of days gone by. I found a photo of what the site would have looked like with the wheel in place and what a sight it would have been with workers scurrying around over rocky ground and the noise of machinery as they made haste to gather the gold that these hills were supposedly offering.. thanks for the cache placement juanmatt..
Found on my first caching day out for 2018 in the company of Claybol and jtnsilo. What an amazing place! I would never have known that this structure was here if it weren't for geocaching. Thank you for bringing us here juanmatt and thank you for the cache

Find #1648 for me. Found with jtnsilo and kazba16 at 12:50 pm. I took some rec. leave from work today to go geocaching with friends and fill another empty calendar date. When we left Bendigo it was cool and overcast so we were a little surprised when we got out of the car and discovered it was already quite hot outside. And then we saw it - Wow, what an amazing location! How would you even know it was here? It was certainly looking a lot drier here today than the photo in Sean.75's log taken last September. Thanks for bringing us to this wonderful piece of history today juanmatt and thanks for the cache!
Last one before heading home. I enjoy exploring old historic ruins, caxhe was an easy find, with kenare taking the honours. Cigc. Tftc
Kenare found this one in no time. What an epic place!! A fp from me for the location. Tftc
What an amazing place!! I would never ever have known it was here if it wasn't for your placement. We took some mouldy old papers in bulldog clips to drop into a bin. Tftc
After recent failure at another rock wall I was hoping and csme through thankfully. Logged at 8.44pm. Home time. TNLN TFTC
We took a very circular route into this cache but really enjoyed the spot once we got here. This must have been huge but suprisingly I can find little information about it on the web compared to the Garfield wheel. Another one of those places that geocaching can bring you to. Thanks SL TFTC
Straight forward find.
Water in the box. Soggy box. Contents wet but log ok.
Had a great look around this wonderful site.

This is the reason we love caching. An out of the way spot that hides something wonderful. A chance to get to know the history of the area that isn't touristy and sold-out. Just you, nature and your imagination of how people battled and won or lost in such a harsh environment. To see what could be achieved without modern machinery, and how things were built to last with craftmanship that far surpasses some of the slapped together, designed-to-break work we see today. Thanks so much for bringing us here. After a short search the Moose's caching sense spotted the hide. A sensational spot.
Bogonghazy and I came up for a long weekend of caching and to attend the CVG Annual Anzac event. We DNF'd this one a few months ago, today it was 6.15pm, dark and cold, came in from a different access point (no having to crawl under fences this time) and BH had the cache in hand within 30 seconds. We shook our heads, and cant understand how we missed it last time. Thanks, glad to have it crossed off now.
Found with Sully1 after the event here in town while touring this beautiful part of the state. Sully and I had been here on New Years Day and had no luck after an extensive search. Ironic that we spotted it straight away with headtorches on in the dusky light. Thanks again juanmatt for bringing us here to this piece of history
Probably the best hidden (of that type without giving it away) that I have done. Well done, thanks for the great cache and interesting area
We are enjoying exploring this area, there are so many interesting things from the past to check out. This certainly must have been an amazing operation in its time. Once again we found it fun, trying to imagine what it would have been like in this place, many years ago. It took us a little bit of searching to finally come up with the goods, but done, we SL and replaced. Thanks again juanmatt.
Always makes me wonder when a cache seems to disappear just after a newbie has found it. Sully and I spent a good 20 minutes up and down the wall here, but no luck. The structure however is amazing, thanks anyway JuanMatt
Came across another cacher who was holidaying from Newcastle as we came into GZ. He commented that he'd had a look and didn't have a lot of time, so was leaving empty handed. Bogonghazy and I persevered for a good 20 mins here, and also came away empty handed. Never mind, we will return again another day. Thanks for the hunt.
I came here for the first time early in 2013. Locals said that GZ was once clearly visible from the road - maybe 20 years ago. TFTC TNLN
I have been consolidating my finds database in GSAK and have located a number of caches that I haven't logged as yet. I guess when you travel with limited net access, it is easy to miss logging a few, or maybe it's just laziness. As always I have enjoyed the hunt and the experience in finding this cache. Thanks juanmatt for taking the time to research and place this cache.
Found bonus treasure first. Took a while and only when caught glimpse of green as approaching fm below. Happy looking!
After failing to find this one after several previous attempts, we finally found it this afternoon! Quick easy find for us today. TFTC
The new coordinates are pretty spot on. I was initially worried as CevDog and I had searched this region in our initial visit when we had widened our search. Spent a bit of time looking around when H discovered it! I'm pretty sure if it wasn't for her we would have come away empty handed again. Great spot.
Also checked out the 'extra treasure' mentioned by Romax. Very odd!
We also dropped off the Fraggle TB as the location seemed appropriate.

Thanks juanmatt, we hadn't been here before and you are right, it is up there with the garfield wheel. It is all very interesting how things were done in the past. The co-ords were accurate for us today. Nice to be second to find.
Found by Roma and Max.
Having searched unsuccessfuly previously we opted this morning to get an early start to try our luck again!
This time we found your coordinates to be spot on, although your cunningly camo'd container did still elude us for a while.
We reiterate our previous comment that you have chosen a very impressive historical site that indeed challenges the better known Garfield Wheel for visual impact when first sighted!
Thank you juanmatt for placing this hide and for your prompt maintenance of it.

Thought for sure this would be our first FTF. CevDog and I scoured a 20m radius around the GZ given by the coords but to no avail! Later 2 more cachers joined in but we still left empty handed! A beautiful location that I would never have found so TFTC anyway!

Sorry for any inconvenience, we will endeavour to correct the coordinates as soon as we can. We had placed it using coordinates on an iPhone but will check them with a GPS.
What a great geo destination, such an imposing construction hidden away from the usual tourist route, and very worthy of a visit.
However now that we have made a couple of visits to this site it is time to log a DNF.
Like the previous log we widened our search area considerably to no avail, your cunningly hidden container eluded us.
However we did have the added pleasure of meeting Michelle and Brittany on site and even with 4 sets of eyes searching we all came away empty handed.
We did find a note in a bottle which we left for other searchers to find and also ponder over!

We had the rare opportunity to chase a FTF today.. but didn't manage to find the cache after over two hours of searching. However, we had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Romax today, which was just as exciting as finding a cache!
