Before leaving Barcaldine this morning, we visited the Tree of Knowledge and whilst there, collected information for this earthcache. Answers to the questions have been sent to the CO. Thanks TeamSenz for the earthcache - it earns a favourite from us.
What an interesting location and a great piece of history. and the interest extends right up to modern times with the preservation of the tree as an eternal monument to the early union movements. If the tree was poisoned by some individual they must be disappointed as its gained more life and fame as a memorial post life. Thanks for bringing me here.
Thanks for making me look more closely at this icon. We have enjoyed our time in Barcaldine.
Answers have been sent.Kiwisteve2 and I enjoyed our visit to Barcaldine in July. Just catching up on earth cache answers and logging now. Trying to find all my notes and pics. Thanks for bringing us here and thanks for the education.TFTC

What a very important site. I didn't know about this thinking tree eventhough my father was a big unionist and labor party member. I love sitting under the largest wind chime I have ever seen. My Geocoins visited.
Found on a nice Sunday stroll through town on our way home from Longreach. Great to see in person what I teach my year 9 History class about! Tftc
Our time in Longreach has come to an unfortunate end. Not to worry, our caching adventures continue as we make our way back home to Caboolture. Its sad to be heading back home, but at the same time weve made some unforgettable memories and visited some spectacular locations we never thought wed visit. Thanks for bringing us here.#4140 - TFTEC

Very little planning had been done but a very rough outline was in place and it was going to be a day by day trip.A wonderful stop in Augathella overnight with The_Tritonz and today we are on the home stretch with Longreach our final destination!A great spot to visit here. I only wish I was able to return at night. Thanks TeamSenz for adding this cache to the worldwide collection for us all to enjoy.----------------------------------------------------------Are you planning a trip to Victoria? Answers sent by email now Im back home in NZ This is second time Ive seen the tree and first time hearing it chiming. Stopped on way to Blackall in 2019. Over from Otautahi Christchurch for this the last Outback Muster. Spent ages working out all the puzzles but I really enjoy jigidi ones. Shame I didnt find them as I didnt join in with someone with a spare seat for the day. Thanks to all the organisers for the hard work and effort in putting this and previous events together. Only sad thing is I could only get to Blackall before this one. Sorry this is cut and paste logging but I will add in a comment as required along the way. Ma te wa from me for the time being. Im sure we will meet again
I have vivid memories of this tree. I spent about six weeks in the Winton/Longreach area as a volunteer tutor to children on outback stations under a scheme called VISE (Volunteers for Isolated School Education). On the way to Winton I stopped here and paid homage to this ailing but revered tree. A week or two later there was news that the tree had been poisoned. Everyone was talking about it and were very upset that it had been poisoned and hoped they would be able to save it. On my way home I had to go through Barcaldine again. The tree was looking very much sadder and there wasnt much hope for it. I was pleased they had gone to such great efforts to restore it and at least keep the memory of it alive. This year, on the way to QOGM, I had the opportunity to see it again. Its not much like what it was, but if I treat it as a memorial to the tree and its significance I can almost be comforted. At least they tried to preserve the significance of the beautiful old tree.
I have visited this tree on several occasions when in Barcaldine. I think it is a valuable memorial with a lot of historical meaning. Thank you for this cache which made me focus my attention on this history. A favourite point from me.
I am in the camp who really likes the "replacement" structure, I find it very striking and ey-catching.
Caching here following QOGM 2023 with La Kedi.

This is a fabulous earthcache with so much history. If only the tree could talk. I love the art that had developed around it. It's a nice cool spot to sit and contemplate. Great park too.
They’ve done such a wonderful job of creating the memorial monument to the poor old tree - I really cannot fathom why someone would go and poison it! The answers to the earthcache were not always evident so there were a few guesses based on research but I really enjoyed the visit to the historic tree and associated memorials.

Outnabout for some solo caching while camping in town overnight. We’re taking the roundabout route to QOGM 2023 at Longreach. It’s always a great day for caching.

For anyone making Geo plans, do yourself a favour and visit Australia’s only current Geotour at Ballarat while it lasts: https://www.geocaching.com/play/geotours/ballarat-victoria
And for anyone that can travel to Longreach, Queensland, late September 2023, Google “QOGM” which is the Queensland Outback Geocaching Muster. You’ll have at least 8 or 9 days of pure geocaching fun with around 200 like minded people attending a mix of events and access to over 200 geocaches placed by the QOGM team. It’s not a Mega, it’s better.

We have visited this amazing site twice and remain impressed with the story behind it, the work to maintain it and the present day design concepts. Answers sent to CO for this brilliant earthcache location.
On our Queensland adventure, we happened to stay overnight and woke up to find a lot of knowledge. Great history of this amazing tree and the township.

Departed Melbourne the other day and travelling north for the winter, well, for the northern warmth actually (hopefully ), passing through as many small towns as I can grabbing the odd cache here and there as I travel. Leaving Charleville this morning and heading north again hoping to find somewhere for the night just past Barcaldine. I'll be heading out first thing in the morning through Augathella, Tambo and Blackall
This one took me a good while to work out the answers.
**Thanks for placing this cache TeamAstro**

A great cache to 'find' and learn the history about. Also seeing the tree lit up at night was awesome.
We visited at night which was a great time to view the memorial with it all lit up. A very interesting and iconic place to visit and its great to have this EC to highlight it.
Greyhams and I have been on a mission to see as much of Australia and visit as many of the LGA's as possible for some time now. This trip was Queensland, flying into Brisbane and a full 8 days on the road stopping for as many of the caches of interest we had time for as we passed through.
Leaving Brisbane northwest was our direction, as far west as we could go all the way to Birdsville. Of course, it is a Geocaching trip so it zigged and zagged as needed to cover the areas required. Yulaba, Charleville, Barcaldine, Ilfracombe, Longreach, Windorah, Birdsville, back to Windorah, Quilpie, Thargomindah, Cunnamulla, St George, detour to Moonie for a FTF, Wyaga, Warick and the home run back into Brisbane for our flight home.
Love the driving as we left behind the trees and entered red earth and sparseness, always a surprise though passing through areas of yellow grassy plains, although generally open flat land in all directions was what greet us. Wildlife was in abundance and never have we seen so much. Emus dominated for 1000's of km, cattle as we passed through their grazing lands, but also pigs in numbers we didn't expect. Echidnas, goats, horses, a giant goanna, foxes, and birdlife that does well on the overnight roo casualties. Still no camels though, they have to be out there somewhere!
The country hospitality was a highlight, great friendly people, Queensland hotels full of history and character. They all were great but the Wellshot in Ilfracombe needs a huge shout out for being the stand out of this trip. Leaving the car at Windorah and flying into Birdsville not only saved a day of driving but the scenery flying low over the countryside was spectacular and memorable.
Also memorable was waking up on the second day with the best case of laryngitis I have ever experienced... no voice, none! To top it, it lasted the full trip only returning by the end, I'm not sure if I pity GreyHams for having to deal with me squeak in an attempt to talk and silenced, or he had the best trip ever!
The days were full, either full of km's or caches but never dull with so much to see or do. The caching grounds are rich thanks to the QOGM events, it's definitely a great location to hold them. Many thanks to all the CO's for your caches that helped guide us as we travelled through Queensland on a great trip.

What a great road trip through outback Queensland....Aquilus1 had a great time, and its lucky I like the sound of my own voice, and can argue both sides of an argument, because Aquilus1 had (un)fortunately lost her voice.
We saw this at night, which I actually think added to the experience.

This was such an incredible area to visit. Would I have been drawn here to this spot, to look up in awe. What an interesting preservation of the history, not so much for the tree. Great spot. Answers sent to CO. cheers for bringing me here.
I've sent my answers off so hope I pass. The history at this site is incredible. So sad the tree was poisoned. Workers united will never be defeated. TFTC.
I have known of this tree for many years. The history is very important part of this country’s story and very well presented. The built memorial is very impressive indeed and the town is also very impressive. TFTC
Stopped here to have a look at this tree. A massive amount of effort has gone into creating this memorial.

Answers sent to TeamSenz, We have visited the tree of knowledge several times when passing through town on our adventures. My phone screensaver is actually a photo I took laying under the tree looking straight up, spectacular. We returned later that evening and the publical (I think) came down and let us play with the light sequence controls. We had answered the questions but logging now to Earthcache weekend. Tftc

We travelled 8,500km through 5 states for a 60th birthday party over approx. 6 weeks. We endured many days over 35C and then saw a lot of water in the eastern states. We enjoyed travelling east with family and then they travelled back to Alice and we made our way home to SA, trying to dodge the rain and wet weather.
Caching is a great way to see the many wonderful sights and learn about the places we are travelling through.

Thanks for the cache, and loved learning about the history of the tree. Answers sent to the CO.
We are on a 2 month trip from Portland via the Mundi Mundi Bash to a wedding in Brisbane and then out west for QOGM in Charleville.
After a very good nights sleep at the weir we headed into town before it got too hot and tried our luck at a few caches. The long grass sure added to the challenge today.
The memorial really is special once you take it all in. Answers will be on their way shortly.
Thanks for contributing to the fun TeamSenz

We are visiting Barcaldine for a few days. Tomorrow we leave, and we have loved exploring this area with a day trip up to Aramac today once the road was finally opened after the recent rains.
We came to visit the tree of knowledge three times. The first time we did not realise there was an earth cache here, and then we needed a couple more visits to really ponder the questions.
The significance of the tree for this area during the shearers strike, and the beauty of the sculpture around it is quite remarkable. It stands out from quite a distance on the skyline.
We have sent out answers to CO.
Thanks TeamSenz

I knew about the Tree Of Knowledge and its importance to the development of the Labor Party but not where it was. It was a pleasant surprise to arrive in Barcaldine and find the tree in a state of preservation, if not life.
It is rather spectacular in many ways.
I was rather taken back to read the shearers were sent to St Helena to serve their sentences. It of course was where Napoleon was sent in exile as the most remote place in the Empire. We should not forget them.
It was also interesting that the train from Brisbane to Longreach spends 30 minutes here, its only exteded stoppage.
Thanks Team Senz for the opportunity to have one more county and spend some time here.

We had planned a road trip to Queensland to visit family in 2021, but our travel plans were stalled due to border closures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that the world was trying to get back to a semi normal state, we decided to have another go at getting away from the cold and head up north for some sunshine and warmth.
Day 7 with a change of direction for our trip due to road closures so instead for Tambo to Emerald we had to detour via Blackall and Barcaldine updated the GPS’s to collect caches along the way along with heaps of grey nomads towing caravans even a group of old vintage cars and motorbikes along the roads to contend with.
Now that we had arrived at our destination for tonight we decided to check out the earth caches in the area.
Another interesting one here and all our answers have been sent to the Co.

What a spectacular sight, especially at night when the lights make it awe-inspiring and eerie. We had the privilege of coming during the day and at night. Learnt much about Australian history, preservation techniques and the landscape. The historical aspect was of particular interest with the Australian election at the weekend. Watch the sun set from the local tower before heading back to the show grounds for dinner and a game of cards.
Had some issues posting the answers for this cache but I did take photos of the tree and had a look through the glass floor, so will try again tomorrow if I have reception (as we are not sure where we are camping tomorrow

Finally my trip to Outback Queensland has begun!!
The weather has been so bizarre in all that waiting that it looks so green and not at all like Australia usually does.
We flew into Longreach yesterday and today we are exploring the district, heading east through Ilfracombe and to Barcaldine where we stopped for morning tea and time to explore the town. I headed for the Tree of Knowledge. It is unusual as you approach but once underneath it, it really looks like a tree. The birds think that too as 5 Magpie Lark nests are in the old branches. One pair were already feeding young, that we could just see peeking out.
It was very windy and the 'wind chime leaves' were making a lovely sound. What a great idea to mark the site of a historic event in Queensland and Australia's history.
Answers sent to the CO.
I shall add a photo when I've sorted all those travel shots.
Update - now added.

What an amazing tree with an incredible history and story to go along with it and I absolutely love the construction and the idea that this was the canopy of the tree in its heyday I think this is a marvellous piece of work….. we were here in 2002 when there was no structure around it and the tree was alive and fairly well from what I remember it’s so sad to say that it’s not because of some arsehole….. absolutely worth coming here and enjoying this tree just to sit down and look at it and imagine how things were in the past…. Do you so much for bringing me here this is my number one favourite
Required information sent to CO for due consideration. Note: after cycling 80km to here against a headwind, the big 'leaves and branches' above were not moving! And so no musical notes!
It’s Mega time once again!! Woo hoo!! Love these epic road trips. This time the plan is Canberra to Narromine to Cunnamulla to Blackall, a detour via Winton and then swinging back to Charters Towers before the main event in Townsville. Will see if the April rains and flooding detour us! Thanks to everyone who placed and maintained all these caches that enabled us to have a wonderful holiday! Thanks for the cache.

Day 4 of a 3 week holiday driving from Canberra to Townsville and back to attend the Mega. Today was Charleville to Torrens Creek, via Barcaldine. Approx 800km. Travelling up to Townsville for the Mega Event and Maze with beckNmonts. Found this one along the way.
Day 7, leaving an unscheduled stop at Alpha headed to Barcledine via an approach from the south. Continuing to cache along the way picking up as many puzzles and rarer cache types as we could.

Only in Barcaldine for one night so had to make some choices as to which caches to go for. this one was a must in my opinion. What an interesting place, I'm sure it doesn't suit everyone's taste but who cares. We found it fascinating both before dinner and afterwards came back for another squiz around. Email sent with answers. This town will be back on my caching holiday list for sure. It was quite enjoyable both riding around in the evening and walking in the cool morning air. tftc
**This Cache:**
Woah! What a legend tree! And a grand spot in Barcaldine, really enjoyed visiting this location and having a meander around! I struggled to see what was under the glass, not sure if this is because it has been damaged or because of the light. Eventually I was able to get down on the ground and cup my eyes with my hands and see through, OH cool!
The birds living in the roof are not very nice though, making a bit of a large mess down here.... That was part of the problem...!
Answers have been sent, and a photo added to my log!

**Today:**
Day 3 of my road trip heading towards Townsville in NQ!
After a pleasant camp in Wyandra, QLD, I was up nice and early once again!
The first goal of the day was the Wherigo cache in this small town, I was happy I was camping here as it was much too dark and I was too exhausted to attempt this cache the night before!
It was another fantastic day, picking up almost 30 caches before settling in a campsite just outside Barcaldine, QLD well after dark...!
Today was pretty exciting for me, to be deep in QOGM territory with wherigos, EC's and letterbox deluxe I was pretty spoilt for being in the outback. This meant an extremely long day though to fit them all in!

Passing through at lunchtime on route from Brisbane to Darwin. So hot, but the shade of the monument was nice. I had no idea of the story of this tree. Thanks for the history lesson!
TFTEC.I was here 21/7/2021 and stayed 3 nights in Barcaldine. I love this town and did a lot of walking and exploring here. We stayed at Barcaldine Homestead and I can't praise it enough. I will have to come back so I can look at the tree at night. I am from the Hunter Valley NSW from a safe little town.
Driving from Brisbane through the outback, krcamber and I stopped in here for a break and to visit the Tree of Knowledge. Lots of leaning to be had and it was enjoyable. So much history!

Swearah and I are road tripping from Brisbane for some outback caching madness and we stopped in here for a break and to visit this super spot. Spent a bit of time here reading all the info, very interesting. Answers sent to CO, thanks for bringing us here and thanks for the earth cache!
So much love for this tree and was sad to see it dead. Thank you for bringing us here. Logging with DeafCat, Deafphantom and DutchAus
I visited this fantastic town last year but due to the amount of people around I couldn't get close enough to take a close look.
Back again this year, I had the place to myself for some reason. This gave me an opportunity to explore and learn about the history of this once magnificent tree. So sad it is no longer living, but it is great to see its life preserved and honored in this way.
Thanks TeamSenz for putting this EC together, answers have been sent.

Visited the Tree of Knowledge while in Barcaldine during a trip from Adelaide to the northern tip of Australia on Cape York Peninsula, traveling along the Strzelecki Track to Innamincka, then to Noccundra, Quilpie, Blackall, Barcaldine, Hughendon and Ravenshoe to Cairns and Cooktown, out to Weipa and up to Bamaga and Seisia. Thanks for the interesting Earthcache TeamSenz!
We are on the way back home and sent the answers to the CO.

Day 2 and the planned driving to Longreach was much shorter than Day 1 but the find total was higher as we travelled through Blackall and Barcaldine picking up some oldies and others of interest.
Stopped off to grab this earth cache, very busy in Barcaldine today. With answers gathered we sent off our answers to the CO. Thanks for bringing us to the area TeamSez

Day 2 of 8 (Tambo to Longreach) of a Queenslander road trip with Kestal, clocking just over 4000km, to tick off boxes for different challenges. What an interesting spot with loads of information boards. We formed our answers to the best of our ability which Kestal sent through to the CO on behalf of both of us. TFTC TeamSenz.
This is a very interesting piece of Australian history. I am so glad that the tree's remains have been preserved and that there is a Young-un growing close by. I sent my answers to the CO and hope they are OK.
