we are loving the mountainyou would think that a visit to our states big mountain would make the visitor feel insignificantyour puny self transposed against the giant beast of bogongyour tiny place in the worldbutit has somehow had the opposite effecthere we are giantseverything is small on the mountainall is crushed by the oppressive forces of ice and windthe bushes are short and stuntedthe lizards are wispy skinksthe flowers delicate little daisiesand we lord over allkings of the mountainscrossing the plateau with mighty stepswe are not looking forward to going back down the mountainand becoming mere mortals again
Making the most of the holidays.... today a trip up staircase spur and to the west peak. Big day! With 25km covered. Needless to say I was completely stuffed when I made it back to the car. Last cache to find over at the west peak. Thankfully no-one died but we weren't looking forward to the climb back up to the summit, did not feel like we were walking down hill all that time. Anyway the bright cache was found with an even brighter grasshopper thing on top. Nice spot, cool container. TFTC and FP.
Absolutely loved the colour of this one!!! A lovely stroll over from the west peak. Fabulous day, crows and bugs abounded. Tftc!
17/4/23 Aka “Simons Lunchbox”. A terrific part of Bogong that not many people get too. A great cache in a great location!
On a Geocaching trip with day1976, we camped at Mountain Creek Campsite the night before, and made our way up to Granite Flat on the Sunday morning, to begin our big hike from the 4wd access point. I'm sure it was much easier than either of the other two ways, but it still felt very difficult to me!
This was a bit of a hike out from the top of Mt Bogong, and then it took us an hour to get back to the cairn at the top of the mountain from this cache, because my legs were sore so I had to keep stopping!
Day1976 told me he was with Lex when he actually finally did find this cache, and I'm glad it wasn't a tragic ending.

Now on our way back to Bogong Basecamp we went past this, my last cache of the mountain. The trip to Eskdale Spur was uneventful, but the trip down was very tough on the knees. My bad right knee let me know straight away, but when my left knee started complaining I knew I was fatigued. Now just to ride the E-MTB back to camp.
Thanks º

Its a sparkles pink kind-of Day. We loved this cache. Wandering around West peak area. Flowers amongst the rocks . Sometimes its good to stop and look at the detail amongst the big views. TFTC really enjoying our wander
Our plan was to do Mt Bongong, West Peak and try to take the saddle down to Little Bogong, but time and the terrain difficulty beat us this day, and we decided to halt the days activities at West Peak and set camp just in the valley below the cache. Nice paint job on the lunch box and cache was in good order as we sat and admired the views. Signed and returned. thanks for the cache.

No muggles and no souls. An onlooker may well wonder the mission to nowhere in particular. Splendid views and poifect weather! TFTC Lex.
The Kettles were planning their (what seems to have become) annual summer holiday to the Victorian High country. For part of the family, the attraction is the seemingly endless choice of mountain bike trails to ride. So while the riders discussed what trails were their top picks to ride, Ma Kettle had an idea....I wonder if Kettle Twin 2 and I could complete the Victorian 1700m challenge while the riders were having their fun? A quick look at the geocaching map confirmed that there were enough possibilities close to the MTB trails.
12 months ago, Ma Kettle and Kettle Twin 2 had made the trek to the top of Mt Bogong. This year they had decided to do it again and make it an overnight adventure to allow time to visit the West Peak (and to find as many caches along the way as they could). With the temperature climbing towards 40 degrees, it had been a tough climb up yesterday, but as long as there was a breeze, conditions where okay on top of the mountain (except for the March flies) so with plenty of water on board, we continued with our plan.
Having walked from Cleve Cole Hut to the summit, we had made 3 more finds that could contribute to the 1700m challenge putting our total, so far, at 9 qualifying caches. With 3 possible finds out towards the West Peak, this challenge was starting to look achievable. We added another one to the list with a find at Caches of Ice and Fire and after a bit of zigzagging across the country side, when the arrow couldn’t make up its mind where it was actually pointing, we found a glorious pink ammo can. Added our names to the log book and noted that the cache was in tip top condition, then set about finishing the hike to West Peak.
Thanks for bringing us here…it’s experiences like this that keep us involved in caching.

So with some last minute shift of activities and a check of the weather a detour was made. A reasonable start and on the track by about 8am after the multiple creek crossing. Lucky we had a vehicle with a bit of clearance.
Up the spur track we headed and it just seemed to keep going up. After Mitchell's Hut it was more up to and soon above the tree line. We could see the summit cairn but figured we would do that on return as part of a big day out with the Phone pedometer showing over 50,000 steps taken and over 400 storeys of stairs climbed.
It was now into the afternoon having done a loop to the south so it was time for the summit and the western side.
After the last cache we soon realised there are no real tracks to the western summit so ploughed though the undergrowth being careful not to drop too low as we figured we would be going up again.
No problems finding Simon's Lunchbox and the coords were also good. TFTC.

The 2nd of 6 on an overnight snow trip to qualify for the NZ Beekeepers Challenge.
A beautiful walk down from Little Fingers establishment and across the bowl to this little knoll. Was a little concerned about the grid after the last find, but bang on GZ was a sparkly metal lunchbox poking out of the snow. TFTC and the justification of a weekend in the snow.

Day 3: Bogong.
On a 5 day leave pass, I decided to hit the hills for some high country caching.
After spending the previous night in Michelle's hut, I woke up early to cold, wind and rain. Well - you didn't come all this way to sleep in a hut at the bottom of the hill. I packed up my overnight gear, got the hiking poles out, thermals on and appropriate gear. Going up the hill was slow going - literally hiking in straight cloud, with 5m visibility - I'm sure there is a view out there.
After picking up Little's Establishment, same old story: Mental games, decide to push on. However here is where it got tough. Through wet alpine meadow - in continual wet, blowy weather. Then again - not snow, so need to be thankful for that. Reached the peak and pulled out the cache - cool container, although saw a spoiler photo from a previous log so knew what I was expecting.
We are all glad Lex made it back to this cache - his a good man in a bad world.
Thanks ° for the cache - certainly skipping leg day this week.

Found at 12.30pm,
I set up camp in the valley approx. 150m away from GZ, Donning my daypack I spent the afternoon exploring the area - Some stunning views in every direction.
I have really enjoyed spending time finding lots of caches across the Mountain.
My back has improved by the easy walking which bodes well for more off track adventures in Tasmania.
Nice colour camo as well
TNLN only photos and footprints
I hope Lex has fully recovered
Thanks K&M

Dad and 14yo spent three days up in the high country, hiking and sleeping under canvas while we hunted caches for a 1700metre challenge.
This was the third of 19 that we grabbed over the 3 days, with no DNF's whatsoever - a family record!!!
We had camped a little below the treeline on the prior evening, and headed up top with daypacks for a morning of caching amd sightseeing. Arrived at the GZ moving west from the main peak. We were reasonably confident that we could discover a pretty pink container, and so it proved. So glad to hear that Lex is still with us, and that he seems to have survived the recent alpine event.

Today up on the hill with ahomburg and while on the walk back to the summit and then the trailhead were we had dropped our packs. We bumped into a another bushwalker who was passing by on the way to West Peak to camp the night down a little in the saddle. Once he was out of sight this was a quick find and a couple of moments taken to admire the views as I found myself looking down on the meander over to GZ more then I would prefer. A lovely container I reckon Simon would be jealous.

Today was a day hike with my Beechworth SC outdoor ed class up the staircase to the summit of Mt Bogong. With the extra incentive to come out to the west peak the group pushed hard on the way up and we had plenty of time to head out and find a few caches!
This was the third of four caches we picked up today. After going in a bit of a loop following the dodgy GPS signal we finally honed in on GZ and made the find, a very colorful ammo can!
Signed and replaced as found before heading back to the summit.

I was in the area grabbing random caches so I can build up enough favourite points to award a power trail of mint tins in the suburbs.
Thanks.

Ah, Deathcache...my old nemesis......we finally meet....
So...this is the cache that did it all, instead of having a grand day out on the big hill 2 1/2 years ago, I got a very fast plane ride to Melbourne hooked up to a machine that went "Ping!"......but I got better....
So after being banned from the mountain for a little while, while 2 cardiologists tried to work out what went wrong.....I'm back...large as life and twice as ugly.
Which brings us to today.......
After yesterdays mammoth effort "just over there" at another hut, the 2 blokes I call "friends" decided that wasn't enough and came up with a brilliant idea to walk up here today........super.....
This time I am bringing backup....
A German Engineer mountain climber....
An experienced bushwalking whippet...
My Wife......
And an ACTUAL Doctor........
So I have all bases covered this time.....
With a lot of huffing and puffing later, and sometimes feeling like I was going to die...again...I stumbled my way into the GZ area, and everyone was nice enough to slow down a bit and let me catch up and then stand aside while I finally found .........
The bright pink glittery ammo can.....
I died for a pink ammo can.........with glitter on it.......
Yep.............
So with great satisfaction, I finally got to write my name in the log book of the thing that has dogged me for a long time......
And he didn't kill me.......
This time......
And then I looked at the crazy German, and he gave me one of those smiles......
This hasn't finished......

What a spot to stop for lunch. Headding to c.c.h. for the night. Thanks for the cache.
Chr158 and I headed out for a lovely weekend camping aroung Mt Bogong (and bagging some geocaches). After bagging two on our way up the Staircase, we tunred to West Peak (which we found easily) then tried to get this one. But our mobile phone GPS kept sending us on all directions and eventually we ignored the direction arrow and as long as the number of metres to the cache went down we kept going. Once we got into the right area, found this bright pink geocache easily. Lots of goodies inside, so we took a trackable - mountaineer Mark. There is still another in there waiting for another though!
Out hiking with some friends on a glorious weekend. So glad to find at least one cache, not much luck with the others in the area

Find #4097
After a reasonable nights sleep at Cleve Cole Hut, DrJim7, Josiey, TeamOaky, °, Anna and I were headed for West Peak and after a mammoth digging effort, we came up empty handed. So some of us then headed towards this one as a constellation prize. A nice easy find compared to the West Peak. Nice Ammo Can!! Dropped in a newly minted ahomburg pathtag.
Thanks to º for placing this cache.

An attractive lunch container was found and was a great consolation after DNF on West Peak. This is a fine part of the world. Thanks °.

Out for a Sunday stroll with some like minded folk when someone suggested a side trip to West peak
Do we have time?
Not really!
Do we have much chance finding a cache with all this snow?
No!
Well let’s do it anyway
Cache or no cache so glad we did as this area was one of the highlights of the weekend and as it turned out this cache was one out of two finds, so we did get to spread some lov'en Bonus!

FTF @ 10:30am
Mrs Mochila and I were camping with a group of muggles on Eskdale spur, just at the tree line. When our leader suggested a day trip up and over to West Peak, I knew that this cache was somewhat on the way and ready to be found by someone!
As we headed beyond the summit and over Hooker Plateau, I knew I was getting within a few hundred metres. I had my snow shovel on my pack, but knowing that it had been hidden in lousy conditions a couple of weeks earlier buoyed my hopes that it wouldn't be under a season's worth of snow.
Sure enough, when I arrived at the GZ it was pretty obvious where it was. This is my first FTF, but only just as I happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Mrs Mochila was with the main group a few hundreded metres away and saw me waving at her excitedly. She skied over, snapped the photo of me rifling through the cache and then signed the log also (although she may not be able to log it here as she's not a premium member... yet?). After this, I headed over to the group and had a nice late morning and early afternoon sking the slopes of West Peak.
I took the FTF prize of a new geocoin that I will set on its way soon, and may give it an altitude related goal, in honour of this cache. I left some foamie animals in its place.
Thanks to ° (Philipp) for this cache!
