We met the CO at a nearby cache and had a chat - when we said we were heading to find this one next he came along too - nothing like having the CO watch you as you search for his cache. As we approached the GZ we could see that mother nature had let loose on the trees all around the area, many were ripped from the ground and many others snapped like match sticks, it was really sad to see the beautiful bush in such disrepair. We all (including the CO) searched and searched but we think mother nature has had the last laugh on this one. Logged with permission of CO. Thanks for bringing us here and hope you caught a fish or two for your tea
Found with quinella on day 3 of our travers Sabine loop- a real effort had to be made to leave our hut mattress for this- lucky it was an easy find. Tftc
Quick find on a pause in the days tramp from Sabine to Speargrass on Travers Sabine circuit , thanks.
Was offered a place on a boat up the lake for hunting, fishing.....and caching, I'd be daft to say no wouldn't I?
Left Blenheim around 8 o clock and got here in plenty of time for a nice trip up the lake. The weather is promising to be kind, and a night in D'Urville Hut is the plan for accommodation for tonight. Bags packed and plenty of sandfly repellent, they must really like my English blood, fee fi fo fum, I hear coming from the masses of flying teeth.
A new day dawned and we set off on the trail of some elusive deer. Although none were actually sighted, there was plenty of genuine sign they'd been about, must be very wary of humans. Our friend with the boat collected us from the hut and kindly took us straight across the bay from D'Urville, saved about 5-6 hours of serious tramping on this ever warming Summer day. With a promise to see you soon we set off ready to find Taniwha and then this one
Got here along the pleasant walkway through the beech trees to frequent bird song, nice. This is also a blank on my D/T matrix so another great reason to target this cache.
A quick and easy find at G Z and replaced as found. Off to have a look at the Sabine Hut amenities before the boat takes us fishing, then to the car, and home
A great weekend up this neck of the woods and a great experience being in this area

With a weekend hunting trip planned, I caught up with capperz to see if he wanted to join us and get a ride to the hut in the boat. Definitely was the answer and so we planned a few caches in the area between hunting spots. Headed over from the D'Urvile hut this morning to have a look for this one. It's been 15 years since I did the Speargrass track into the Sabine hut. Beautiful spot. Hopefully DOC can do some more track maintenance soon and re-open tracks in the area with windfall damage.
Cache placed exactly as described.

Found it. Took a boat across the lake so not sure of the track conditions. A note in the hut says track still damaged as of 25.7.14
Checked up on cache track is clear from Sabine hut to here. Would not advise you to walk up the track from the village as someone in the hut book said it took them 11hrs to get to the hut. They said the track should be closed.
took us awhile to find the track
once we arrived at GZ, nice easy find
thank you for the cache

FTF We left Nelson on Friday afternoon in the middle of a thunder, lightning and rain storm for Lake Rotoroa to paddle up to our home away from home. At the lake we found none of the predicted weather or any of what Nelson was getting. Instead we had an amazing night paddle on a glassy lake.
It looks like the weather hasn't always been that peaceful in the last month since BT hid this cache. I found a little carnage on the track and then 42 meters from GZ a large tree appeared to have snapped in half taking out a few others on its way down. So the last few meters turned into a climbing over tree debris adventure instead. The debris trail ends with half of a doc sign on the track covered in the tree top. GPS accuracy was not great but cache was found quickly. Thanks BT for placing the cache which has allowed me to keep my streak going
