Cache was disabled back in May - perhaps it's about time there was some action here? When will William be back?

Mmmm this was thought provoking, fancy burying someone under the label of 'others', despite the segregation a nice place.

*"Others"*, huh? Different times, different attitudes but sometimes the so-called *changes for the better* are merely cosmetic and the underlying prejudices remain. Even though his headstone suggests he was warmly regarded, and maybe he was, it must have been a lonely life in Australia regardless.
Anyway, TFTC.

Was always going to head out today for the souvenir but when I was given the option on Thursday evening that I could do what I wanted the plan was to collect one of the local caches (and reduce my chances of filling all my calendar holes this month) to a trip somewhere where I could get a few more. Options were around Myrtleford where I still have a few to collect or further west - in what I will call the Wangaratta-Benalla-Yarrawonga triangle. With the weather forecast so much better than the last two days (yesterday in particular was disgusting) I chose the latter. Hadn’t realised that this was where the silo art was so that was an added bonus. Poked around and found a few interesting caches (and missed a few as well). Interesting all these little villages all had pubs (that were open for lunch) but no shops (I had a hankering for a dim sim but had no luck). A pleasant drive and even got to cache in the rain for about 30 minutes.
Second cemetery cache for the day and this one is a fair bit bigger. Impressed one of the first occupants spied made 103. Walked to the back and looked at William’s grave amongst the ‘All Others’ (assume a lot more with no headstones here) before wandering to the cache. Was not closed properly but contents all good.

On a drive out to Devenish to check out the silo art. About fifty billion degrees. We parked the car and walked to the cache. Spotted from a distance away, signed log and returned. Nice cache with a bit of history nearby too. TFTC
I didn't come away from the GZ know who William was, but I did find the cache. TFTC.
Visited the St Arnaud for the Mega Event and now staying in Benalla for a couple of days. Each day we went in different directions. Thank you to all the CO's who have placed these caches, as it was a most enjoyable time looking for them. Cache found and log signed. TFTC
Last full day in the Benalla area and exploring the countryside by searching for caches. Thank you to all the COs for placing and maintaining caches in this area for us to enjoy finding.
On my way to Cobram and dropped in for the find, I have just started this capper so that was my second find haha. I left a bracelet
On a long weekend away staying at Benalla, doing the silo art trail. Ohh we love cemetery caches, and what a beautiful cemetery this one is. The trees are in full blossom at the moment...just stunning. After we found the cache, we wandered over to William. Its strange as one of our customers is a William Saunders. We paid our respects and headed onto the next cache. TFTC jigg61
Grave looks a little lonely so far from the others. And clearly people cared at the time or they wouldn’t of even put a headstone in.
Found with KI BUG heading back to Cobram after a tour of the Silo Art and a nice lunch at Gooroombat. TNLN, TFTC.
We went past on the pevious day while doing the silo run however did not pull in. Today we could not resist finding the answer to the mystery. We were surprised with the solution. Cache was a quick find. Thanks jigg61.
Taking my father on a tour of the silo art in the area on a beautiful sunny day, how could I be in the area without doing a cache, so made dad stay in the car while hubby and I went on the hunt, had to hang around after a local muggle inquired who we were searching for, told him we were just interested in looking around small country cemeteries he wished us a good day and we went hunting,
Found , all in good order TFTC

Traveling australia. Out seeing some silo art and thought we would do some caches in the area. Staying at broken creek bushcamp. Thanks for the cache.
En route from one art space to another we stopped here to find out about William. Cemeteries are so interesting, and this one was no exception.
Now we know a tiny bit about William, we would like to find out more: how did he get here, how did he stay here, how did he die?
We discovered a TB in the cache but if it knew the answers to our questions, it did not share them with us. Left it for someone else to collect.

Out and about with Mrs &others while the men are out on the gold course. After viewing the silo are work it was back to the men for lunch. Made the easy find. Love old commentaries. Thanks for the cache jigg61
Came to town to have a look at the Silo Art and pick up a cache or two on the way.
Lovely little cemetery, bit of sad history with this grave though....respected by all but still segregated even in death........
Thanks for bringing us here - cache intact but suspect the has been wet recently.

Meant to get this one on my way to Yarrawonga but it was too dark after spending too much time admiring the nearby silos. So with a very early and somewhat chilly start to the drive home, this cache was on the radar. Managed to drive almost to GZ where the cache was found and logged. Thanks for the history of William and for the cache jigg61
Sitting at my computer during these Covid lockdowns, I am trying to catch up on a few logs that I haven't sent in yet.
Over the years, geocaching has taken me on many adventures, including interesting destinations all over my home continent of Australia and many overseas as well. It has also introduced me to a diverse group of like-minded caching tragics, many of whom I now call close friends.
Today, I was lucky enough to be out and about searching for caches, something I do on almost a daily basis. This was one cache that was targeted and found.
Sorry for the late log, something I am notorious for. Thank you for adding to the adventure that is geocaching.
Thanks jigg61 (F=1524 H=9) for the cache.

None the wiser who William was, I was tending to rush in the late afternoon light, so just grabbed the cache and we left.
Thanks jigg61 for the placement.

Tftc. I learned about William before I knew about this cache. A colleague of mine has ties with the descendents of friends of William's. Quite an interesting story
We now know who William was. Thanks for the history.

Not being up to caching yesterday with dalerious and Cybergran V, today I found myself with less than the 25 points needed for the last week of the Mary Hyde activity [)]
Hence why after a busy day today with a visit from muff1 on their way home to Kaniva , some housework including changing the mattress in my caravan for a new and hopefully much more comfortable one and also having had almost no sleep last night due to having found a Rotty playing with the traffic and bringing it into the caravan overnight until I could find its owners as tired as I was, I just HAD to go caching!
Contacting dalerious ended up with us both heading out early, returning late and again tonight dogs were involved A couple of lovely Staffies met us in a park and one had its collar hooked under its front leg, so tightly that I still don't know how it could breathe and move!
Finally managed to undo the collar and put it back on properly [^]
Tonight's total was a 4 cache finds of caches that taunt me every time I drive the Benalla Rd [^]
Now I know who William was!
Poor William, respected by all but relegated to the lonely rear of the area

Having been to Mackay for a very quick visit I was on my way home when I saw this intriguing Cache name and location. I just had to stop and look for it and see Williams Grave for myself.

A quick and easy find as we cache our way up to Albury today. The grave inscription reads "a negro American respected by all." Not respected well enough to be buried alongside everyone else though, as his grave sit lonely way up the back of the cemetery. Thanks for bringing us here and thanks for the cache.
On our way from Mansfield to Tocumwal we stopped off to do this cache. Very very hot today. We were very careful of snakes.
Easy find in an out of the way place, shameful story behind this one.
Cache in good condition, jr cacher left TB OTYV25 "BIG BUG"

DNF leaving now however I saw in the comments some of you wanted to know why he was there and it was because he was an African American and wasn't allowed to be buried with the white people of the area. It's disgusting.
Found a a rare sunny day, well camouflaged in the long grass and whom is William Saunders? Tftc:)
A nice brisk walk into the headwind and we soon had it.
Very interesting person, must look him up.

We can never resist a cemetery cache and today was no exception. After passing a police car on the side of the road with a speeding car pulled over, we cautiously turned into the front entrance , where we soon had the cache in hand.
Thanks jigg61 for the placement.

We always love a little country cemetery and this was no exception. We had a bit of an explore before retrieving the cache and then viewing Williams interesting headstone. A bit of a google search later in the day shows we are not the only ones who wanted to find out more about William.

Having rebooted the GPSr, I tried it on this cache.
Having a bit of a problem with overshoot but located it easy enough.

Poor William. All by himself. Pretty amazing. He must have had an interesting life being who he was when he was alive. Tftc
After visiting William's grave today, I still don't know the answer.
But the story of how he came to die here in Australia at the time he did, would make a good novel

Bettyboo3747 and I wanted to grab a challenge cache in Numurkah, so we travelled a convoluted path to grab some other out of the way caches we had passed by on previous trips.
On his headstone it says "Respected by All", however they buried him as far away from everyone else as they could get while still being in the cemetery!
I would be interesting to know his story.
Thanks, Robmc.

# 7436. Another very hot summers day and Robmc and I are driving a few roads less travelled between Beechworth and Numurkah to complete a challenge cache there. We are fortunate to be gathering quite a few interesting finds along the way.
Indeed, who was William, that is a very good question and I am sure we would all love to know? Hopefully kerydn21 might find something out. We were surprised to see his grave so far away but with a nice headstone and some flowers too.
Thanks jigg61

Amazing find - how did this guy get here from USA? Quite a few Civil War vets came to Australia, William must have been one of the most remote - a farm worker maybe? Love to know his story! Easy find, took TB, left pencil for the next finder. TFTC
Perhaps an innapropriate location to give that kind of a tickle
Appreciate the cache none the less.

Suscoe was heading back to Benalla after their second day caching in Shepparton.
This was our 26th find for today. The weather has been kinder today with a little less heat which has been appreciated.
This was a bit sad to think that this was where he was put to rest.
Not sure exactly who he was but we know a bit more now than we did this morning.
Thanks to jigg61 for placing this cache here.

This was our last cache for the day as we headed for home, well not exactly home, more like the in-laws place in Yarra.
Pulled up out the front and noticed the groundsman cruising around on his ride on mowing the lawn.....as he had only mown the front half of the cemetery and not done the back.....it looked like the cemetery had a mullet! All business in the front and party out the back
So due to the circulating ride on muggle hairdresser, I had to go into full strength invisible ninja mode complete with combat rolls, and made it up to the back without being seen.
The cache was soon found, the log signed and returned, and then it was invisible "cone of silence" ninja moves back to the truck without being seen once again.
Thanks jigg61 for the cache and bringing us to this nice little cemetery.
Cheers

After waiting a few weeks for a chance to get over this way caching I finally managed it today.
Another cache that delayed me. The caretaker was out with hus shovel and meauring tape and I ahd to wait for hime to finish his preparations before being able to retrieve the cache.
Thank you for the cache jigg61.
