Having solved (most of) these puzzles some time ago, I thought this latest visit to Canterbury would be a good opportunity to finally make a start on finding a few of the caches. Number one is a place where I seldom start when it comes to cache series but I did manage it in this case. A nice easy find to kick things off.
A quick find on this one, nice to get number one, although it definitely wasn't the first one I found! I biked from Motukarara to the Birdlings Flat turnoff today, picking up some caches along the way. What a beautiful day for it, a great place to be. Thanks for the caches along here!
We were planning to cycle the little river trail, and so had limited time to solve these clever puzzles , but enjoyed the ones we managed to get. Couldnt get this through the checker as I seemed to be missing a digit, but man to find it from the information we had in an obvious place
Figured this one out easily on our way to Akaroa. Turning into a lovely day. TFTC will try to solve more in this series
Melonthego solved this while I drove. Stopped and picked up on the way to Akaroa
I solved most of the series years and years ago but have only ever found a few of them - ones with easy access. But here i am finally at number one - although I can't remember it is highly likely it was the first one I solved because I tend to start at the beginning when solving series of puzzles. Lots of people using the trail today which is good to see. TFTC # 20,833
I very much love getting to visit the South Island. Until recently it wasn't something I got to do very often, but in the last year I've managed a series of mini-trips for geocaching, and here we are at the start of 2024 with another one. Just like my first SI trip in 2023, I've come to Christchurch to target a few specific caches to help with my Jasmer Grid, and qualification for a few challenges I'm currently working on.Having arrived an picked up my rental car, I wanted to head over to Akaroa, a place I've only ever visited once before on my first trip to NZ back in '88. It was winter back then, and left an impression in me of being stunningly beautiful. What would it be like in Summer? But first I have a few solved puzzles I wanted to get on my way over. The Smile series of caches were all solved some time ago, and looked like they would make a great set to pick up today, but my planning for this trip didn't go so far as to identify the nature of their final locations and how they wouldn't be simple park 'n' grabs. This was the first of them that I could walk to in a reasonable timeframe, and I had no issues making the find in the first place I looked. No issues to report here, and the log soon had my name on it before the whole lot was replaced as found. Thanks for setting this one up.
Today our goal was to find as many caches in this series as possible. I had solved a lot of these some years ago and then had help from the caschers in our puzzle group earlier this year. So I was very pleased when Lis was organising this trip and she said we would come and find these caches. The first smiley found and I am smiling.Apologies in advance for generic logs.FINALLY, and with humble apologies for being so late, I am catching up on my logging.Day 4 of The North Islanders in Canterbury tour with Liss Crew. We are targeting specific caches -oldies, and puzzles. Of course, there will be days of laughter.During our time here, all found caches were signed as NZL, regardless of whether either of us has found it previously, or with individual names for Challenge Caches according to whomever was claiming the find.Kia ora rawa atu for the cache karma reprint.
I'm from Paihia/Whangarei and I'm down in the South Island for 6 days with NZ_B on a geocaching trip.I had a few goals for the trip:*50 or 60 puzzles for my diamond badge on project gc*40 caches to get to my 6000th find*some South Island minutes for a challenge*but mostly a clean out of my ever growing solved puzzle list.Monday we collected the windmill geoart on our way to Oamaru. Tuesday the focus was solved A2O puzzles, the sunflowers and other solved puzzles. Wednesday we headed back to Christchurch collecting challenges and more solved puzzles. Todays focus is the Smile series around Lake Ellesmere. I love puzzles so I was very pleased to have time to collect the smile series today. Amazingly I'd solved this in April 2015. Didn't realise I'd started this series so long ago. Even more pleased to turn this into a smile today. Thanks for keeping these caches going for so long
After making a mental note of the hint from the Geochecker, I hiked down the rail trail to get this one. TFTC.
Left Akaroa today and headed back towards chch. Decided to do the rail trail on the return trip. Managed to find some parking for the caravan and then we set off on our bikes.
A nice easy find that was after a nice easy solve.
Thanks for putting this series together

We went for a walk along sections of the rail trail this morning to collect the rest of the Smile series, and a few others. This one was quickly found. TFTC!
First Smile on a rather cold grey windy day. The trail was a good tryout for the new E-Bikes. TFTC.
Day #6 of my Geotour.
Geraldine to Akaroa via Ashburton, Burnham, Lincoln and now Birdlings Flat.
Hitting the Rail Trail before heading on to Little River.
I managed to solve 16 of the Smile series which I was pleased with.
Another quick dismount and grab.

First of the Smile series. We had told the CO we hoped to find some of these on our next trip to Christchurch - and now we have.
Thanks.
Thanks.
The second find of this series solved over the lockdown period earlier in the year; TFTC
Had fun and learn't heaps with these puzzles during lock down. Today is lovely so packed picnic and got the bikes out. Let the adventure begin. Thanks for this cache karma reprint.
This morning I solved a view of this series.
This one was a quick find.

Can't forget to log this one, as it will become my most southerly find! Needed a quick easy find near our bnb and this one qualified. Actually, it turned out to be a perfect selection as it could be accessed quickly from the road (and it looked like not many others nearby could be). Our last find in NZ before heading back home to Canada. TFTC!
Out on a ride with Shannonp1 to find the rail trail smile series which were all solved a long time ago and finally got the opportunity to pick them up, with a few bonus caches on a windy Sunday. Enjoyed the ride with a few other people also enjoying the ride. All found in good nick which was great. Thanks to the CO's for effort of placing and maintaining the caches.
Decided to go for a bike ride with Surveybase to knock off the rail trail smile series, (and a few others on a windy Sunday morning. Enjoyed the ride with a few other people also enjoying the ride. Found all that we looked for which was great. Thanks to the CO's for placing and maintaining the caches.
No rain, no work, perfect reason to go on a caching adventure! A lot of fun except one cut on the finger ad one poke into the eye. 200km in the car, which involved a slight backtrack for an unexpected errand, and 20k steps. Overall a very nice day! Thanks to all the CO's for placing and maintaining the caches!!
I really need to do something about my cycling skills, as much as I enjoyed the walk!

Came out on a lovely sunny day with my 4 year old son for a bike ride and a few caches. Most were quick finds. Some required a bit of searching around but Tom is able to help now. Thanks to all cache owners for placing and maintaining their caches. Find # 1671
It has been a while since I have travelled this path and today was the day for a lunch date at Little River, via the trail. Most of the caches look to be in good nick, and those that are not are were replaced or a new log added.
All ready to go!
Cheers

The last of our finds in the Smile series. We didn't have quite enough time to find them all but we will be back. Found with AorakiSheep
Had half a day available to do some caching along the rail trail and I had previously solved all of this series so it was worth a bike ride. A cold south-easterly today and I had to dress with multiple layers of clothing but after that I was quite warm. I was dive-bombed by a couple of magpies on the way here from Seabridge Road but because I was heavily dressed and was wearing a cycle helmet they couldn't do me any damage. It was getting multiple "clack" noises on my helmet as they repeatedly attacked, but they amused me rather than affected me and I just kept on riding. The cache was a quick find - signed log, TFTC!
Found whilst out walking with the family. Solved the puzzle on the go. Uoy knaht!
Nice easy find on a great day out. Had to find it on foot as the bike is out of action. Plenty of muggles about and no rain today. TFTH
During a rainy day, fefe.adrien and I spent our time to solve some mysteries around the Bank Peninsula.
It was a funny challenge to solve these puzzles, the difficulty gradually increases. We stopped the "Smile serie" at the 9e, not enough time for others.
Then, it took two days to find all of them, some boxes are quite far from each other by walking but w enjoyed our visit, a lovely place perfect for the bird watching.
We signed on the logbook with our team name : lekiprokos

Ninalila and I had only a two hours to solve as much mystery as possible.
We had to find the boxeson 2 different days because we had not enough time to do the all walk from the first to the last boxes.
Some puzzles were easier to solved than other but we managed to find all we could in a short time.
All of them were easy to find.
We enjoyed the walk with the sunset and a lot of insects flying along the path.

second smile for me as I make my way home after a nice day caching in the little river area quick find tftc
A quick find on my walk on the rail trail and after a lovely morning the wind was now getting cold and strong.
Great views of the area today and lots of wildlife. Saw a white heron which was very cool. TFTC
We have solved some but not all of this Smile Series. Decided to come south today and to pick up what we could while in the area. Doing them as a park and walk, rather than a biking trail. Appropriately enough our first one was #1. Thanks.
In town with a spare day and had the bike so decided to take advantage of the opportunity and grab some of these in the series that I'd solved. A beautiful scenic trail, although the heat of the day eventually got me. *TFTC karma reprint, #8583*
One of this missions before coming to ChCh was to solve as many puzzles as we could, all in this series was solved and due to the lack of bikes we had to walk the trail. Very hot today while out with Pagenz but managed to do the whole thing. Many thanks for this little series of caches.

Completed solving all the Smile series puzzles back home in Mandurah, Aus, before coming over for the Mega, and managed to do half of them the other day, and set out to complete the series today. At least the overcast conditions kept me cool, and the southerly was pushing me along. Fascinated by the honeycombed cliffs across the road from here.
Thanks for the puzzle and the cache karma reprint.

[green] Out with Hanknstone again, doing a miscellaneous st starting with the Smile series and then working on the D\T group. After caching the last couple of days in the rain is was nice to finish the day with dry feet - sunny all day! (Surprise!)
Having placed a few railway caches in the Manawatu (I have caches at 40 railway stations, most of them the station and the rails are no longer there). Alas these do not celebrate the railway, but it was a nice day to walk it. Take shortcuts across the farmer's lands to get there! If only I had known to bring a bike.
+Fav for the series.

Today I had decided to do another bike ride signing off a few puzzles that I had solved a while back (nearly two years) and the odd trad that was on the way.
Cheers for the cache.

Out with group from Australia hear for Mega we set out on 20/10/15 to do Smile series. Armed with gps's and smart phones the group consisting of Coruze, Goe Princess, trio loo, ahomburg and skull racing. Tftc
Bit of Mega caching today. Out with a good bunch of Aussies. Great cache. Thank you karma reprint for placing and maintaining this cache.
Really enjoyed solving the smile series, though needed a couple of nudges from the owner. They were all different and they were worth collecting along the old railway path, which offered some great views and plenty of bird life!
Cache was found on Day 3 of the NZ MEGA 2015 caching trip, as Gunnie69 and myself headed out towards to Akaroa area with Green Geckos, Kyzabra and Jinta29, to tackle the Smiles Series, before heading back towards Lincoln for a few choice smilies, and then finish off the day at the Mega site, with some lab caches and a few stray caches.

A combined effort with Ghostgums, Jinta29 and Kyzabra saw the solutions to this series unfold and a full set of finals to snare the caches... [^] Day two of our Mega Weekend in Christchurch, we set out with The Green Geckos with an aim of ticking off the series this morning.
The caches took us along a great trail and we thoroughly enjoyed the walk. The scenery, the wildlife, the unexpected things along the way, certainly made this a fantastic series to chase. Although we sufferred some short period cache blindness at a couple of the locations, we did find all the containers and etch our initials in the logs.
Thanks for bringing us to this wonderful part of town, we're pleased you placed your caches over this way.

Kyzabra and I headed over for the Christchurch Mega from Perth, WA. We teamed up with our caching buddies from Queensland, Gunnie69 and GhostGums for a bulk of the finds. We were joined by The Green Geckos for this leg of our adventure.
A lot of planning was involved with literally hundreds of puzzles solved and we targeted some highly favorited caches as well as those that filled gaps in grids and calenders!
We had a fantastic time caching in the cooler climate and with no fear of snakes or other nasties! Christchurch is my old home town but I did not know about caching when I lived there so it was fun exploring the City with a different objective.
We were glad to grab the smiley on this one and we replaced the container as found. Thanks karma reprint for placing this and bringing us to this spot!
This is my find #4178 and find #5 today.

A caching expedition that has been months in the planning. Jinta29 and I headed over from Perth, and met up with Gunnie69, GreenGeckos and GhostGums from QLD over here.
Our combined brain powers in the months leading up meant we were able to concentrate on the mysteries, and other unique Icons plus a number key D/T combos and jasmar dates.
We have had a ball over here. Personally my first trip to NZ. The cache owners have been great and Ive enjoyed meeting people aling the way.
i apologise in advance for the generic log.

We were over in sunny NZ for a couple of weeks to attend the Mega, and do a spot of caching with our Aussie friends at the same time.
As today dawned a nice sunny day, it was decided that we all would nick off and do the Smiley series, so our intrepid convoy of us, Ahomburg, Coruze, TrooBloo, VK3GS&CC, and the GeoPrincess took a nice long stroll along the track and picked up all of these enjoying the sights and having a lot of laughs along the way. It turned out to be quite a day with us all finishing the last couple in the dark.
We even had to go up into the hills to get some phone service so we could solve the last 2 puzzles as we couldn't go home without getting them all!
Thanks karma reprint for the cool puzzles and great series of hides.
Cheers

Out and about today with a small aussie contingent of cachers in a pre christchurch mega caching run. Today I was with Skullracing, Coruze, Geo Princess, troo bloo and vk3gs&cc. The aim was to hit the smile series and for the first time in a while I was able to use my GPSR instead of my smartphone which I was happy about. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for a bit of a walk.
A quick walk and grab here.

The second of our finds in this series today, TFTC and it was a cracking good day to be out here with the family too.
I need to get more organised for next time I do the rail trail. Worked out one but will have a few more prepared for next time.
Out for an evening of caching with Rincewind3. A very enjoyable evening. TFTC Cheers Bo
Having solved all 21 in the series it was time to go for the finds (along with a few others in the area). I roped Bo (Bo&bronnie) into joining me for a bit of late afternoon cyclo-caching - which evolved into night cyclo-caching by the light of head torches!
This was the third find of 27 tonight (& 3 DNFs). Sorry about the cut and paste logging - I'll add more as I remember it.

I'm very keen on puzzles at the moment. Just being nosey and looking around NZ to see what Geo art there is. An easy solve. Won't be down to collect a smile anytime soon as I live in the north of the North Island. Can see this series will provide some entertainment for the times when I'm stuck at home dying to get out caching. Thanks for the puzzle
What a gorgeous bike trail. We are unfortunately on foot-would prefer bicycle wheels or on hooves here. Especially when squalls of rain fly by. Loving this spot away from suburbia. tftc
We looked at a few of these and realised we could solve a few (not being that good at puzzles). We soon worked away at some more and realised we had about 2/3rds solved so included them in our trip. We had to plot them out to make sure we had the order on the track correct. A nice circuit with the lake on one side. Some of the puzzles needed a bit more effort from us and some of the hides took a while to find while others were in the first place we looked. Thanks fir a great series. TFTC

Every day we are traveling around is same but also different. Today we had again the pleasure to visit some very beautiful spots and were also able to find nearly placed geocaches. I thank every single owner for placing it and giving us with doing this an other good reason to come here.
Mallorcatommy and I were travelling through the southern island of New Zealand. What an amazing, breath-taking landscape! On our way we did some nice walks, enjoyed ourselves and found great geocaches. Thanks to all owners for nice hiding spots... We wouldn't have been to a few places without these little boxes!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Thanks for puzzles and hides. All excellent. Solved many of them back in Sweden and two when here in NZ. Now time to log them. Arrived by car at 9 in the morning and on to my bike. Fabulous morning. Ellesmere like a mirror and full of all kind of birds. So with binoculars ready and GPS working I set off. Logged 10 Smile caches and DNF one of them unfortunately. I give this cache favorit point and that goes for all of them.
#8877. The last find of the smile series. We enjoyed exploring a decent chunk of the rail trail. TFTC.
Had solved most of the Smile series for some time and after finally getting the co-ords for the last puzzle, we were keen to knock the b&%$#^ off. Decided the first day of 2015 would be an ideal day for doing the deed, despite a late night last night, hence a slow start to the day. So it was late morning before we finally were on the road.
We had a great day, with 35 finds for me (34 for StreetWalker as he had already found one of the cache several years ago). The only downside was two DNFs of the Smile series. Many thanks to the COs for the exercise and the entertainment.
Our last find in the series (as we DNFed the last one we looked for). Thanks for the variety of puzzles and a fav point on behalf of the series. TFTC.

Initially had a hunt around the obvious as we'd run out of juice in the IPhone but then looked at the co-ords again which led us elsewhere. Bingo! #1 knocked off! TFTC
Started solving the Smile caches as they were published with reasonably long gaps between spurts of cache solving and cache placing. Got to the point where I had just the three hardest, for me anyway, to go 11,13 and 17. Some great head scratching puzzles and others that just seem to pop out rather quickly.
Solving 1 seemed to help with previous caches on a number of occasions but in the end was still left with those 3 mind scrambling puzzles. Had planned a trip out on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago but it ended up raining so I settled down again to work out those last three. Wonder of wonders I did manage two of them but still had 11 left unsolved when we headed out today. With parking as close to 1 or 2 as possible it still meant some rather long walks along the cycleway to grab others. Many locations seemed to jump out at us as we approached and even not solving 11 we did manage to find it in a gap and good looking location as had a few others it seems. Some very neat hides and some that took a little searching especially those in the "rocks". Especially one where 10 minutes of searching turned up nothing till I looked just 1/2 meter from where I had placed our bag and there it was.
All in all it was a good day in the sun not to warm or cold till getting near the end of the day when the wind started to feel a little chilly. I good days exercise with at a guess 13-15km walked back and forth up the sections of the cycleway. Best of all we managed to find all 21 in the end. Great series of caches and puzzles and now I have 1 big smiley of smilies. Thank You For All these Caches.

Out with the LaVista team today, finally tracking down some of the smile series. Great day for a wander and we're enjoying seeing the livestock around too. TFTC
A fine day to go and find a few caches. The rail trail is an ideal place for a quiet undisturbed walk. TFTC
I guess this the puzzle everyone will get!! Nice stroll the other way and another quick find. Is that a thunderstorm approaching? Surely not. Thanks from a couple of wet searchers.
The coordinates were here for quiet awhile and today we took the bikes for a great evening tour through the home zone. Many thanks for this great trail, we enjoyed it so much!
NosyNel did all the hard solving of the series here. i just come along to find the caches (hehe) Ohhhh No1 . Cheers for the series.
Found this one during our month long campervan/"Road trip" vacation in New Zealand. It was a wonderful experience driving around this beaurtiful country.
This one was found on a day driving from Lake Tekapo to Akaroa
Thanks to karma reprint.

Went out today to do a bit more of the Rail Trail series. Nice quick find. TFTC.
Our second "Smile" cache on our cycle journey along the trail today. Great set of puzzle caches. TFTC
This looks like a fun series and so I got the bike out and slung it on the back of the truck and off I whizz. Will take it slowly a) to give me a summer of caching along here and b) it will take me all that time to solve the harder puzzles. (Although look at the log for 21). Strong easterly made riding one way a bit hard, but nay sweat! #1 ticked off

Last night I was still working at the computer when I spotted a new cache had been published in an area I was due to drive past in the morning. (I was on transport duty to pick up kids from their school camp at Wainui - I'd volunteered because it gave me the opportunity to get the newer caches out that way). No ticks on geochecker, but by the time I solved it I was second. Then I saw the next one and managed to get the first tick on that. Then I realised I'd missed 3 others and by the time I solved them I was 5th, 6th or 7th to solve. Lots of cachers still up. Someone is bound to get the FTF's before I get there. I worked till 2am in the morning and with no kids at home to get ready for school I slept in. Arrived in the general area and overshot the nearest one. Stopped close to #6. Quickly found - unsurprisingly 2TF (but a little disappointed all the same!). Then ran to #5 and quickly found that - also 2tf. Back to the car and drove back up the road a bit to this one, jumped some fences for another quick find, but this time I was 3tf. TFTC. Back to the car .....

I saw this bunch get published last night, and there was still more being published as I went to sleep! Looked simple enough, so I decided, if there are at least 3 un-logged caches in the morning, I'm solving and going!!
And then morning came, and all 5 were un logged! Grabbed what I needed for the day, fed the kitten, and raced out the door!
On the way I realised I was very very low on petrol... awkward! Ah well, FTFs at stake! I then realised I didn't have my GPS on me... that was even worse... but if I turned around, I may not get the caches first!!
I decided that the phone would have to do... even though I was only on 30% battery and cell reception would be sketchy!
Arrived at this first one, and initially thought the coords were off. Apparently not! Riiiight! Should have read the attributes better before heading out... but now that I was here, jumping the fence it was! And a bit of a bush bash... Then I found the cache easily... opened it... and FTF!!!!! WHOOT WHOOOT!!! OH YEAH!!!! Almost didn't believe it!!
Then I spotted the easy way in... riiight... so I ran back to the car... but someone had some old fencing wire up, and I tripped, and skidded in the mud face first... wearing work clothes to save time had not been a good idea... even if it is casual Friday!!
TFTC!!

Being sadly in need for some time in the saddle in preparation for an international mountain bike orienteering competition to be held early in the new year I hoisted the treadly onto the back of the cachemobile and drove to Motukarara. It is some years since I last rode the Motukarara to Birdlings Flat section of the Little River Cycle Trail and I was a little disappointed to note that some parts of the trail have suffered from stock damage and that other parts have been invaded by weeds. However, it did not take too long before I had travelled just over 3kms to get my 1st smilie of the day here. I had sort of vainly hoped that I may have collected a FTF, but this was not to be - but I'll settle for the 3TF and a FDF (needed for a challenge event in the North Island). Thanks for placing the cache karma reprint.
Whats this, a wee batch of new puzzles. What fun. Quickly solved. A lovely late afternoon for a wander...parked as close as i could and wandered along. Nice wee puzzle and hide. I look forward to the rest of the series.
