I'm down from Paihia for the Dunedin Mega event. We did a lot of caching around there between Friday and Sunday. Then on Monday we went down to Invercargill. The plan was 1 day traveling down picking up puzzles as we headed south. Tuesday was doing the Big I and the penguin series. Fortunately we also had time to collect Cliften Swing Bridge and Monkey Island. Wednesday was Curio Bay, Slope Point and Bluff as well as a few in Invercargill. Today was driving to Middlemarch for the old Donovan cache while collecting a lot of solved puzzles on the way and generally doing most of Middlemarch. Friday we headed up to Christchurch where I was going to spend the weekend with my cousin before flying home on Sunday. I solved this one from home with the help of Google images. A fast find at the calculated gz. Nice to pick it up while walking the loop track today. Thanks again for all your caches around the salt lake Smile

Das hat richtig Spa gemacht hier am Sutton Salt Lake!_____________________________________________________What a great landscape here at Sutton Salt Lake! Actually, the oldie Sutton Salt Lake from the year 2000 had lured me here in the middle of nowhere. But once I had reached and found the oldie, I was tempted by the marvellous landscape to go for a walk around the lake. It was great fun and even took me past a few more caches. Many thanks for sweetening this hike. It was great fun here at Sutton Salt Lake!

Found with Gazania Rigens and Wombatwandering as per their logs.Lots of shy skinks seen on our tour of this unusual and beautiful landscape. It had been sunny all round and the first of the rain caught us only metres from the car on our return. Perfect timing!TFTC

Having had a busy geocaching weekend in Dunedin, at the MEGA, matagouri and I are now continuing on with our holiday 'road trip'.On our way to Sutton salt lake, for the last of my targeted 'oldie' caches, and what a beautiful day for a walk!A quick calculation and then back tracking a bit, to make a quick find. Thanks for setting this up

Rattll and I are continuing our holiday in the South Island after the completion of GeoToroa in Dunedin. Today, we're heading from Brighton Beach to Middlemarch, aiming to pick up as many solved mysteries as possible, and to visit the Sutton Salt Lake.I'd visited the reserve quickly a year ago, and was keen to explore more fully today. Lots of rain over the last few days meant that the lake levels were high and the tracks soggy. Quick find at GZ, though. All good in the container. Signed, and returned as found. Tftc!

28-Oct-24
I had worked this one out at home so that we could walk around the lake in either direction. It turned out to be a good idea, as we would have had to backtrack a bit. We saw quite a few skinks today. TFTC!

It didnt take long to get some numbers together then a short walk and we were soon signing the long. Thanks Kev the Orienteer#17429

I wondered what a Multicache could be based on out here away from civilisation but of course all was revealed as we approached. It was good to catch up on a bit of history here. I couldn't help thinking of the original Europeans who got the opportunity to use this land. I imagine their enthusiasm would have waned when it was realised just how many rocks there were to work around.Really interesting country. Loved the visit. Thanks ??!

28-Oct-24
Gazania Rigens had done her homework here so no need to guess which direction to go around the lake. Nice quick find which was good because the rain was getting closer. Walked past a person wearing white trainers which I thought was ambitious. Thanks!

28-Oct-24
Oh we do like a multi with no ambiguity and where final coordinates work out well. As luck would have it, the coordinates were back the way wed just come. Yes, of course we went back to find it. And find it we did. We also found a loose log sheet on the ground, sopping wet. It was very soft and tore as we peeled it open. So as not to spoil the dry log and contents within this cache we removed this log sheet from site. (Pic attached) Thank you.

CaptainVimes and I have crossed the ditch to attend the Geo Toroa mega in Dunedin and tour around the South Island for two weeks.Of course it was in the direction we'd just come. Lol. But not too far. Thanks Kev the Orienteer and happy caching

Stopped to get the golden oldie but thought a walk around this marvellous landscape would be enjoyable and it definitely was the caches were a bonus.

Day 1 of my 6 day trip to Dunedin to attend the Mega and clean up all the puzzle caches solved over the last few years. Todays journey took us from the airport via some of the new DT 81 puzzles to Middlemarch and then back to Dunedin. All caches done today were with Bruzie. Apologies for the generic logs. Thanks for all the puzzles, caches, find, frustration and enjoyment. According to my height check this is knee high rather than much higher..

24-Oct-24
This is day one of my Dunedin Mega trip, the first time I've ever been here before (never mind geocaching). Obviously with such a plethora of caches to find there's going to be plenty I'll skip but I hope to find my targets. Unfortunately logging is going to be generic, but thank you to all the cache owners and event organisers for the things you do.Waist height if you're Tyrion Lannister. All good here, and thank you to Kev the Orienteer for the placement of your Multi-cache.Find #7195 at 24 October 2024 3:02pm

Today I left Dunedin for a trip inland to Sutton Salt Lake, where there is an old cache from December 2000. And you can't deny that. After all, it was probably my easiest hunt for an old cache ever. The walk along the circuit in the nature reserve was beautiful, but it was quite hot 31C and the sun was strong. But I was all alone and felt like Frodo Baggins from The Lord of the Rings. The landscape is beautiful and I really enjoyed the trip. Thanks for the cache and greetings from Czech republic.

Cache 1610 Decided after visiting Dunedin to head over towards Sutton/Middlemarch to grab another of the south islands oldest caches. Ive never been here before so as I approached the Sutton Lake Reserve I was amazed by the other worldly look of the area so cool, I wasnt going to go for any of the other caches around the lake but I was having car trouble and had to wait for the engine to cool so I could check it out so I took the opportunity to gobble up these caches I usually skip multis as they can be time consuming but I had plenty of time and this one was nice and quick T4TM

Together with Travelser I'm going Down Under. We are driving around with a motorhome. After 7 weeks driving around through Australia we arrived the 2th November in New Zealand. For ten days we will cross the Northern Island and than for 2 weeks the Southern Island.During our trip we of course search for several caches. Most of them brought us to very nice spots, like this one.All the CO's, and in this case Kev the Orienteer, thanks for bringing us here and give our trip a special accent.

28-Nov-23
After traveling around Australia with Oopie for 7 weeks, we have now been traveling with the camper in New Zealand for 4 weeks. Along the way we will of course also visit various types of caches in beautiful places, including this one. Thanks CO for creating and laying this cache.

Out with the Wednesday Walkers, split into three groups -- cachers, helpers and non-cachers. Found several other caches on the loop, found the info panel, back-tracked to GZ and I soon found the container. On our way quickly to rejoin the rest of the party, patiently waiting for us.TNLN. TFTC.

Out with a big group of the Wednesday walkers. We had to back track to find the final. Kiwichris soon found the cache. Great day to be out and about.

Two of us quickly worked out the coords, then just as quickly worked out that we should have walked this loop in the other direction! A quick back track while the rest of the group waited for us, signed and back on our way.

A southern adventure for a wee family Easter school holiday trip. After a few days in Dunedin we were now heading up to Naseby for a couple days...and hopefully some fine weather!
Coming this way to Naseby it'd be rude not to stop at one of the oldest caches in NZ, and do a bit of a walk. Rain held off and a lovely walk....A lovely walk and a nice wee multi to finish the loop off. With all the recent rain and wet overcast weather- the brief flashes of sunshine which we did get on the walk bought all the skinks out...boys enjoyed trying to catch them as we wandered around. Thanks.

27-Feb-23
I would have liked to see more information boards in this interesting area. Enjoying the views and spotted several skinks and possibly a gecko making the most of the warm sunshine. TFTC

Found the noticeboard, solved the co-ordinates and then had to backtrack due to the direction that we went around the loop track. TFTC

We had a lovely time exploring the area, topped off with a bit of history with the multi. The final was quickly found but I think that the waist height was for a Hobbit!

No problem with the numbers but I had to out wait a slow moving party. Thanks.

Day two of my road trip through Southland. Today's journey takes me from Invercargill back to Mosgiel. Old School Challenge caches are the focus of the trip. I arrived at the carpark just after 4 pm, there was hardly a breath of wind and it was quite mild. After finding GC153, I then continued around the loop. What a special place, I enjoyed the majestic scenery and the solitude of my own company. No issues here, Gathered the information, went to the corrected coordinates and a nice quick find, just the way a Multi should be. Cheers and TFTC

Doubled back to grab this one which led to a few more schist puns while en route. TFTC

Had this one solved pretty quickly and then had to double back to grab it.

Fortunately it only took a minute and I got to look at more schist!

Thanks for the caches!

18-Feb-22
We travelled this circuit in a clockwise direction as this seemed the best flow for the caches... well I got that wrong ... on our return we found all the info from the information board and calculated the co ordinates...oh bother its an about turn we were sorta confident with our efforts but must admit a geochecker or check sum would've been an advantages for reassuring us..as luck had it a good distance back the cache was found and signed...Thanks for the multi K the O

It seemed an unusual location for an information board. Were there more? Will there be more? So much information begging to be told. Information gathered and a quick backtrack to find the cache. Thanks for the multi Kev the Orienteer

Nice easy multi and easy find of the final. Interesting place. Didn’t see a single soul when we were here. Saw many skinks and one gecko though. A bit stinky by the water and we wondered if that smell was normal. TFTC.

Walked three times around with no luck. Then spotted it on the ground. Maybe pushed out by the lizards? Put back where I think it belonged with a few guardians.

On a caching weekend to Otago and Southland with Tuolei to pick up old caches, TMGT's, CANZ, solved puzzles and any others that caught our eye along the way. We had a 4 day long weekend planned that would take us around Dunedin on the first day, Tuatapere via Sutton, Balcutha, Mataura and Winton on the second day, Tokanui via Riverton, Invercargill and Bluff on the third day and then back to Dunedin via the Catlins on the last day. Overall we did 1578km and picked up just under 100 caches and managed to knock off most of the caches we had on our list.

After finding the sign (shame there aren't a few more around as this is a fascinating area) we found the required info and back tracked a little after we figured out the final coordinates. Another quickish find as we knew what to look for here now. Great to get them all here without any issues, and all in good shape. TFTC.

Out and about on day one of Bennett24 and my holiday to the south to look for interesting caches including oldies, solved puzzles, geotour caches, and interesting types. The cache shortly down the path was a target for its old age and of course while here we collected the other caches.

Bit of a treat to have a multi to find as well and the information was interesting on the board and worth the read. We got the answer out first time which was great and made the short back-track to the hide and found the cache quickly. Everything in order here and it was great that every cache here is in good condition. Thanks for the cache.

A nice easy multi on a pleasant walk. JDScout and I are on a pre Xmas campervan holiday. Geocaching is on my agenda. We both like biking and walking too. Thanks Kev the Orienteer for placing this geocache it is find 8052 for me.

Sadly there was no large event in New Zealand in 2019 but there are a few Mega events planned in Australia. New Zealand will have another large event in 2020 in Auckland.

OK get to GZ and hope we do not have to go back around the Lake. Its getting cooler now and three times around the lake is quite enough for today. Captured the info and head to GZ for a good search. But it does not tie in with the clues. So its back to the sign board to recheck our figures to find our error and head to a new GZ. Now this is more like it. Snagged and tagged without much problem. Cheers. Enjoyrd the info board here.

Tuesday 23 April - Outrum, Taieri Gorge, Middlemarch and Sutton today. With Jack and Jill along for bike ride at Middlemarch, in the mix.

Its another awesome geoventure to Dunedin, with The Seagnoid, Zara, Toby, Jack, Jill and William all along for the trip. Had a wonderful 10 days exploring Dunedin. It was great catching up with local cachers at several events we attended. Lots of walking and driving, with the odd cycle and wave ride to jazz things up. Thanks to all the COs that made this trip a wonderful success. Even managed to bag some lab caches along with wherigos, earth caches and events, with the usual mix taking us to some amazing places..

23-Apr-19
Yeah this walk has been a comedy of errors. First I botch up the area calculation and have to walk around te lake twice (plus the third time via the track), but here I miscounted one digit and ended about 150 out. At a place that with a bit of imagination could be called a sinkhole, and had some great hide places. But one word in the hint did not match, so Taybeedragon and I backtracked and rechecked the numbers. Thankfully this cache didn't have us walking around the lake again!

Taybeedragon and I have an eleven day Easter weekend in Dunedin. Although, let's face it, given that we are from Blenheim and Picton that means two of those days was spent in travelling. In that time we grabbed a smidge over three hundred caches. Not bad, considering the amount of time spent way out on the back roads, on bicycles or canoeing on the water. A few virtuals, larges, letterboxes, earths, wherigos, and even ten lab caches in the haul. An awesome weekend!

14-Apr-19
Today we found Skink Hole (Otago) on our travels. Some speed reading and quick waypointing and we realized we had walked around the lake in the wrong direction! Ah well, didn’t have to retrace our steps very far.

Thanks Kev the Orienteer for being part of our geocaching fun.

A planned geocaching trip with specific targets in mind.
1: The final 2 caches to fill my D/T grid
2: The last 5 caches available (all in the South Island) to meet the NZ Jasmer challenge GC4R9Z6
3: Get as many caches as possible in a day (Solo)
I had no timetable and only a vague route (Christchurch - Dunedin- Invercargill). So after 20 days of sleeping in my tent/car I arrived home having traveled 4500km and visited some interesting places. Met some great people. I had found over 650 caches. That was a lot of park. Jump out out. Find cache sign and return. Then on to the next. All this done by myself. Also attended an event and had 2 FTF
Mission 1 and 2 were achieved and I had a best day of 153 caches. All this done by myself.
Day 8 Rakiaia to Middlemarch 18 caches found including one of the target caches. I was enjoying the walk around the lake. Saw this one so gave it a try. I did the sums and then it was off to make the find. Thank you for a nice easy multi.

Our 3. day in NZL started after a good night in our home for the next weeks. The weather was a little bit cloudy and our trip took us to a really old cache. After our journey through the wonderful landscape we arrived at Sutton Salt Lake and did a nice and peaceful walk arround the lake. Only  a few birds and a little rabbit passed our way. After the old cache we did this nice quick multi. We ended up in Dunedin and were shocked about the cold and windy weather and also the traffic compared with the calmness of the hours before.

We are on our summer holiday driving around the South Island with no real idea of where we will end up each day. We are often drawn to an area that has the potential to give us a few geocaching smilies and somewhere we have not spent time exploring before. In some cases we are revisiting placed that we have been before but liked so much we are going there again.
While in Dunedin we were mostly searching for the old caches that fill a gap on our date placed grid and some Challenge caches that fill a gap on our D/T grid.
This was on the way back from one of our targeted caches at Sutton Salt Lake.
We found the required information while reading some interesting history of the area, and then we back tracked to go and find the cache, we were pleased that it was close by as it was getting fairly warm by the time we got here.
Thank you for placing the cache and thank you for the smiley

On our 5th day in New Zealand we travelled from Dunedin to Wanaka. One of our goals was to get the old cache at Sutton Lake in between. Of course once being at the track we wanted to do the whole tour and it was really worth while! We enjoyed the scenery very much and also the variety of caches and cache types was great. We could find them all easily and therefore make one log for them all. We liked this short multi very much. Like that you can also do them even on a tight schedule. TFTC and greetings from Switzerland

Today we made a roundtrip beginning in Sutton and ending in Mt. Cargill, visitng some new sightseeing locations and looking for old caches. On this trip we searched, found and logged a lot of caches, too. The weather was between cold in the morning until warm in the afternoon, but no rain at all.
Almost no muggels observed us as they had other things to do than observing harmless geocachers.

The Tasks were easily solvedand we soon had the final coords. Thanks to Kev the Orienteer for showing us this location and for the fun we had at Skink Hole (Otago). The search we had here today didn't take too much time.

Greetings from Germany and hope to see you soon in the forest.

Had family down from Nelson for the weekend. Decided to make use of a beautiful spring day and popped the top on the MX5 for a drive to the lake. Stunning to see the low frosty cloud life as we walked the track and arrive at the lake in full sunshine. TFTC 1774

We started our walk around the lake on the left side - I assumed that's the standard in NZ but later discovered that here the 'correct' way would actually be from the right - anti-clockwise judging by the information sign and the direction of this multi-cache. So we had to backtrack a little to get the final of this but that's only a couple of hundred of meters, of course Smile

Had to backtrack after making the calcs, but not too far. Certainly evidence of rabbits around here! An enjoyable variety of caches around the lake, cheers Kev the Orienteer!

Thanks having a good walk around. My boys are walking on and I am finding the cache then running to catch up. A nice warm afternoon. A bit wet under foot in places.

Sorted out the required information and then a squelchy stroll to GZ for a quick find whilst the cold wind gusted around. Out caching with Will of the Wisp on our “Round the World in 80 Days” trip to celebrate retirement. Signing logs with our names or initials depending on space. Greetings from England, TFTC.

Making our way to the lake, we had time for a detour to this multi. With the information gathered, we soon had some good looking numbers and headed off to GZ. I am having a good day, and the cache is soon found. Thanks for the multi and sharing about why this area is so important.

Another fun find, on a fun filled day away with rebel98 and gorby, on a caching adventure around Dunedin and beyond Big Grin

We 3 (rusty and Rebel and myself) are down from Auckland for 3 days of caching, We regularly go away together for 3-4 day caching trips. And today this is our first day of our adventures.

We're about to do the multi and between me and rusty we nut out what we're supposed to do. Didn't take long to get ourselves a set of co-ords and we're on our way to the final. Cheers Kev.

I'm from Norway, escaping the cold winter and travelling around New Zealand for 7 weeks, using geocaching as my tourguide. Already back in Norway I realized that I would love Dunedin, looking at the different hiking-challenges in the area and all the old caches. Unfortunately I am getting close to the end of my travels, so I don't have as much time as I hoped for. I was originally planning to have 2 full days here, but quickly realized that it wasn't enough. I managed to squeeze in 2 more days, skipping some other plans I had, which I don't regret. I had an amazing time in Dunedin, doing lots of hiking and the weather was good all the time. Dunedin truly is a geocachers paradise.

Today was my 2nd day in Dunedin. I started slow by visiting the old caches in The Botanical Garden and Signal Hill. Then I did a circuit at Flagstaff Hill, before I finished off with a beautiful and easy walk around Sutton Salt Lake.

About this cache:
I drove all the way out here just because of the old Sutton Lake-cache, and I'm so glad I did. The landscape was spectacular and the lake was beautiful. A very nice flat hike around the lake. I was originally planning to just pick up the cache and go back to Dunedin, but when I got here, all I wanted was to stay here forever. Thank you for taking me out to this area.

Nice little multi, I love these quick multis. The cache was quickly found. Tftc

last minute road trip to Middlemarch with KJR , 3 years to the day since I was last down this way and had walked the track ,didn't have time to do the multi last time so I had taken a photo of the plaque for a later date ..... well I still had the photo on my computer and was able to work out the final at home (Geraldine ) before heading . after walking the track with KJR while she did the caches it was good to finally get this one ticked off nice quick find tftc

In Middlemarch on a caching weekend with BCD. Up bright and early to head to Sutton Salt Lake for a bit of a stroll. I have never been here before and today was a beautiful hot summers morning which made for stunning views all around. Nice easy find with BCD doing the groundwork for this one. TFTC

Found with StreetWalkerNZ on day 7 of our road trip to the Oamaru Geofest, taking the scenic route, of course. Today we are travelling from Dunedin to Oamaru, via Middlemarch.
We had come here specifically to find the old cache at the start of the track, but as we had the time and the weather was lovely, we carried on to do the loop track.
It didn't take long to get some co-ords and then a short walk later, the cache was a quick find. Many thanks for all the caches here and a fav on behalf. TFTC.

#4077. I have a conference down in the lower South Island over Queens Birthday weekend. So decided to add several extra days of leave to do some geocaching in the deep south. Flew into Dunedin airport this morning and was lucky to land with all the fog and drizzle about. Decided to head north initially up to Middlemarch. Took a couple of minutes to work out the coordinates then we headed back to find the cache. Spent ages looking at one spot before I realised I still had the GPS at the 30 m scale. Oops! Headed off to another GZ nearby and after circling around a few times my muggle companion spotted the cache hiding place. Signed and replaced the cache where found. Thanks for hiding the cache here Kev the Orienteer.
