Day #6 Greymouth to Haast - The Mega New Zealand ExperienceA chance for an overseas Mega was too good to pass up. Especially with half the state seeming to be attending also. I set about some last minute planning. Flights still available Accommodation found Mode of transport securedLooks like its time to cross the ditch. Ive never visited the South Island before so it is bound to be a fun filled trip. Its an early start today as the agenda is jam packed with sight seeing. What a beautiful place to explore. Unfortunately, the loop walk is no longer a loop. Its a shame that the authorities dont seem to have any intention to rectify that any time soon. However, it did not distract from the amazing views and the experience here.A big thanks goes to Emvy_Us for taking the time to add Hokitika Gorge (West Coast) to the geocaching map for us all to find and enjoy.----------------------------------------------------------Wow! The fun just never stops.Have you logged your will attend for Victoria's first ever Block Party? #3920 Today is day 13 of my geocaching vacation in New Zealand. I'm visiting Hokitika Gorge and driving to Franz Josef.Found it! I was going to come here yesterday, but it was pouring. I went to Monteith's Brewery instead. I'm glad I stopped by the gorge today before heading south. It was beautiful.waiiti20 (adopted by Emvy_Us), thank you for the cache!-crystaloops from Taipei, Taiwan on October 13, 2024 @ 12:07:19[GC4XFYV] Hokitika Gorge (West Coast) was a D1.5/T2.0 Other Earthcache at the time of finding.
We absolutely loved this area. It is truly stunning. We sent our answers to the CO, who has kindly given permission to log the find, despite a bit of confusion with the answers (on our part). Thanks for the Earthcache Emvy Us, another favourite point from us.
Logging with permission!Really enjoyed the walk and the beauty of this area - such a perfect place for an Earthcache. The water is amazing and totally matched the colour of the sky today! Thanks for the reason to visit.
Had a very enjoyable visit to the Hokitika Gorge today. Very scenic walk! Worked out the answers to this one and got the C.Os approval to post. #7193. TFTC,
We continue on and take some caches with us along the way. What a fun hobby we have. Tftc

Had a lovely walk to gz to get the information. Very busy walkway and some brave souls were swimming in the river. Brrrrrr! TFTC
Found this new years day. Nice spot grey water today. Lots of muggles.Logging with confirmation from CO. I have wanted to go here as well as the blue pool which also has closed bridge issues for sometime after seeing pictures. So after a week doing Christmas stuff in Christchurch a 25 hours at Muruia Spring in the pools a trip home via west coast was done.
After years on our bucket list and three cancellations due to Covid, we are thrilled to finally be here. Following several cruises we flew from Sydney, Australia to Wellington, New Zealand to begin our next adventure. Picked up our rental vehicle and will be driving, exploring, hiking, and caching both islands for 3.5 weeks. This is what we love about earthcaches... .beautiful scenery, a description of what we're seeing and why, a lovely walk to this destination, and new experiences. We purposely booked lodging in Hokitika for two nights so we could visit this gorge after RBG found it on the map and looked at pics. Like everyone else, we had planned a loop walk, but it became a one way to and back due to the bridge being closed. Wow, the water color is truly amazing, stunning, beautiful. We were so lucky to visit when the aqua blue was highlighted by the sun. We gathered the info for this cache, took many pictures, and visited for a while with a local muggle. Our hike also included finding all the adventure labs, two Traditionals, and the AL bonus. Answers have been sent via the message system and our appreciation to the CO for developing this geological lesson that definitely earns a blue ribbon from us. Thanks for adding to our adventure today, Nukeworker and Racquetball Girl, Arkansas, USA
The water in the gorge is such a beautiful colour. We are so glad we visited. What was planned as a circular walk became a there and back again due to the closure of the lower suspension bridge. Answers sent to ECO
Continuing our west coast trip today, a lovely walk around Hokitika Gorge this afternoon. What a stunning water colour. Answers sent to CO.TFTC

We are on our long-awaited journey around the world in 99 days. Second try after canceling in 2020.
Our third stop after Los Angeles and Hawaii is New Zealand.
This time was of course used to find some geocaches here.
Today we visited Hokitika George and while that time we were searching for the Earthcache **Hokitika Gorge (West Coast)**
At the given coordinates the needed answers where found quickly and after sending them, ther is a new smile on our geocaching map!
At least we would like to take this opportunity to thank Emvy_Us for the interesting information and for creating this Earthcache!

I decide to log this cache although I have not heard from the CO, after sending my answers to the CO via message and email and waited for months but without a response. We visited Hokitika Gorge in April. Unfortunately the river appeared very greyish because there was too much rain before we went. Hopefully we will see the turquoise water just like in the pictures next time we visit here. We stopped at Hokitika Gorge for about an hour before heading to the east of the South Island via Arthur’s Pass.
We came out and visited the gorge on this very lovely day. The colour of the water was great. Since it hadn't rained in a few days.
Thanks for placing this earth cache here

Such a nice place! The colors from the river and the stones are perfectly matching.

I have sent a message with my answers. We are traveling, so if we don't keep up with logging as we go, we might forget to go back and log something. Glacial runoff is always such a lovely shade of blue due to the rock flour. Such a pretty site.

It truly is incredibly beautiful here! The colour of that water can not be beaten - I just wish it was a bit warmer for swimming in. We were here early morning so had the place to ourselves- which probably doesn't happen too often judging by the size of the carpark.
Thanks for the EarthCache!

Enjoyed the walk around the loop collecting the AdLab and trads - then this Earthcache. Lots of folks swimming near GZ - looks pretty cold to me! Sent the info. Cheers
Visited yesterday. App on phone not behaving. See pic. Compass was in the drink. All good. It's not all about the caches, but more about where caching takes us. TFTC
Day 2 of the Wilderness Cycle tour and we started the day with a walk around the Hokitika Gorge. The water was flowing rapidly and was a grey colour after all the recent rain. We can only imagine how blue the water can be!!!! We collected the relevant info which has been sent to the CO.
After the walk we were driven to Canoe Bay where we got on our bikes and headed to the Scenic Waterways just out of Hokitika where we stayed for a couple of days. An amazing place to visit

Some serious track upgrades have happened here over the past couple of years and now a great loop track and new big swing bridge.
Logged with permission. Found with Kiwimykl. Today is the fifth day of our visit, and todays mission is to tidy up a few areas where we didn't quite achieve what we intended to do early in the holiday. That means a revisit to Londonderry Rock and Hokitika Gorge, do the Woodstock Rimu Heritage Trail and grab a few PnGs on the way back to Greymouth. Having been to Londonderry Rock to get the photo for the earthcache there, we came back to here as the other day KM had forgotten to load these caches onto his smartphone and we could only get enough cell coverage to do two of the traditionals. Having got the information and photos for the earthcache we we did the other two caches further along the trail that we missed the other day. We had hoped the river would have some colour in it after the recent rain had caused it to run grey, but it hadn't really improved at all since our visit earlier in the week. I have an aversion to having my image posted on public websites which is the reason you won't see one of me, but there is an image (not selfie) of Kiwimykl and someone had to take that and that someone was me. There is also an image of a screen shot of c:geo showing we were near GZ.
Kiwimykl and I decided to spend a few days based in Greymouth between Christmas and New Years as a geocaching break from our greater family, who we are having three camping/caravanning holidays between 17 Dec 2021 and 24 Jan 2022. Over five days we cached the 'Grey' area taking in such places as the Larriken Track, Omutumotu Bush Walk, Mahinapua Tramway, Brunner Mine Site including both sides of the Grey River as far as Stillwater, Hokitika Gorge, Woodstock Rimu Heritage Trail, Rewanui Walkway, some Survivor series puzzles we missed on a previous visit as well as a few PnGs in between the various locations. Our logs were either in full or abridged to KM + ND as log space permitted.
Thanks to all to CO's who placed and maintained these caches, especially G7&M and H&H. However from the amount of pill bottles used as cache containers, we have serious concerns about your respective health and wish you all the best in that respect. As a token of our gratitude, we left a token of our appreciation behind which will become apparent in due course.

Logging with permission. KR and I were so lucky to have a sunny day for this special walk. Now I am completely sidetracked in describing the color of the river which I'd thought of as elefant hide gray. Then I decided the river was darker and maybe battleship was better. For the first time, I intentionally used the split screen function on my fone so I could compare the foto to Google info. So 'gray' was first mentioned in 700AD and now there are 152 shades of it. I am plumping for Ash Gray, (first mentioned in 1374). There's plenty more information where that came from but it's nearly dinner time. That means there's no time to decide what color hair or jacket I have. Loved our lunch on the rocks at the viewpoint. Tftc.
A nice quick find thanks.
Ms_KR and I are off on a wee jaunt to the West Coast, to climb another mountain. Today we went for a loop around Lake Kaniere. A lovely day for it.
Thanks to all CO's for publishing and maintaining their caches. Cheers.

My first time here. I do love the turquoise colour of the river. Reminds me of the Coventry City FC home strip (there’s something you don’t expect to read in a log!).
It was a nice walk around the short loop track, although we did have a couple of DNFs for other caches. We were not the only ones there though. TFTEC, a great spot and we really enjoyed it. +1 from me.
The 16th and penultimate day of our road trip and we are in Hokitika. Perfect weather again, and we have a few goals for today - the Hokitika gorge, the treetop walk, and some nearby caches down a track to Lake Mahinapua. That pretty much filled in the day as it was a cruisy late start. There was an adventure lab thrown in as well. Cheers all COs. Must be getting close to home, some familiar names popping up…..

I came to this nice EarchCache with the family on a short west-coast adventure! First time visiting the gorge, and once the rain stopped, it was a great walk around.
Emailed answers to the CO, and have this place-holder for now.

We've seen some beautiful landscapes and native bush reserves on our holiday, but this one certainly lives up to it's reputaion. We went nice and early so we could geocache in peace and indeed we had the place almost to ourselves - just glorious. Nice to get permission to log, thanks Emvy_Us. TFTC
We arrived here about 9. Just 1 tourist bus full of the grey brigade and one campervan in the car park. Thoroughly enjoyed the trail that had been developed since my last visit. By the time we completed the track the carpark was full! Logged with permission. Thanks, Envy_us, for the earthcache. A great place to have one.

We came here after spending a night in Fox Glacier and had worked our way up the coast collecting PWGT caches. This was our walk for the day. It's many years since we last came here and we enjoyed the new bridge which makes a circular walk possible. There were a few muggles at GZ but we stayed on dry land. It is a very pleasant walk. We had afternoon coffee back at the carpark with the resident weka. Logging with permission.
I have the week off and decided I would wait and see where there would be good weather and head off on a mini caching roadtrip... right now the west coast is looking great, so over I go.
Had a morning chilling on the beach then headed inline to take a gentle stroll around the gorge area. Answers sent.
There was a couple swimming here despite all of the warning signs. I was quite happy to stay out of the water,

Niteowlnz sent our answers through and we enjoyed grabbing another earthcache even with the rain closing in. Rain was soon joined by the mosies so we made a quick move o. TFTC ;0
With rain starting Stretch0 and I made it to Gz to get the required info ( answers sent to CO) a great area just wish the water was the nice blue I had seen in photos but with the rain it was a very milky grey thanks for the earthcache and bringing us here
I loved this walk before and I love it even more now that it has been extended. It's a cool spot here, I love how the signs make it clear that scrambling on the rocks is only for those who are capable of it and though they're fenced off there is a "swimming pool" type gate for access. Thanks for the earthcache - - most informative.
We found this on the second day of our south island roadtrip. Unfortunately it had been raining the day prior so the river was more grey than turquoise still a very beautiful place. Logged with permission. TFTC
An early visit meant there were very few muggles around and we could soak in the atmosphere.
This is such a beautiful place with such a wide variety of natural wonders.

I started my great and unique round trip over the South Island in Christchurch.
My first major stopover was at Lake Tapeko - here I hiked up to Observation Mountain.
I then planned two days in Mount Cook NP with some unforgettable hikes. My big goal was the Mueller Hut - on a super strenuous hike I reached it.
I continued my journey over the lonely Danseys Pass to Dunedin.
Afterwards I drove along the Southern Scienic Route via Invercargill to Manapouri for some days. On this route I visited many sights and enjoyed the beautiful nature again and again.
I already booked a tour to the Doubtful Sound in advance - another highlight on my tour.
Afterwards I drove on to Queensown and Wanaka. From there I continued over the Haast Pass to the lonely Jackson Bay with storm and heavy rain. Afterwards I drove along the west coast always in pouring rain.
The rain stopped the whole west coast, but I had good rainwear with me. Only high up in Nelson the sun shone again.
Soon I reached the east coast again in Picton and Blenheim and the sun was shining again.
After a few days I travelled back to Christchurch via the beautiful town of Kaikoura.
At the end of my round trip I spent a few more days in Christchurch and its surroundings.
I visited many geological sites and found many caches on my round trip. In Rangiora I visited an event.
I travelled 3418 km and take home a lot of positive experiences.
Thanks to many beautiful caches I was also shown unique locations, historical sites and geological features.
I am overwhelmed by the fantastic and ever changing nature on the South Island of New Zealand - I will definitely come back.
Many thanks to all owners

On our way from Charleston to Franz Joseph Glacier we decided to take the time and visit this special place. And we only can say it was worth to go there. When we were there a kind of funeral celebration took place so we stayed a bit in the background. But it looks fantastic.

#17807. This was our first visit to the Hokitika Gorge; what a great spot! We were pleased we arrived before 9, as that kept the muggle factor low. Troodles sent answers on behalf of us both. Good to do another (originally) waiiti20 cache. TFTC.
Found with StreetWalkerNZ on a lovely sunny morning on a drive to Hokitika Gorge, then back via the Dorothy Falls and Lake Kaniere. It was a very scenic and enjoyable trip.
Lovely spot at GZ, which we had to ourselves at this time of the day , though passed more people as we were walking back to the car park. It didn't take long for the sandflies to find us, so after admiring the view, then answering the questions, we had to hurriedly depart. Coming from the dry east coast, it was lovely to walk through all the lush bush in the reserve.

It didn't take long for the sandflies to find us, so after admiring the view, then answering the questions, we had to hurriedly depart. Coming from the dry east coast, it was lovely to walk through all the lush bush in the reserve.

A long overdue trip to the Hokitika Gorge was planned for the day and with 10 yr old grandson along for the walk we set forth after a picnic lunch. Foolishly we hadn't applied insect repellant since we hadn't been bothered by them during lunch. We did our best to reduce numbers but it was the proverbial losing battle.
With the previous days rain we suspected the colour of the gorge might not be "as advertised" and it wasn't, still a nice walk and a great sight though.

On one of the last days off before going back to school after the holidays we decided to take grandson for a picnic and a drive to the Gorge. Total lack of sandflies on the car park lulled us in a false sense of security. They're big and vicious as soon as you are close to the point of return. It didn't stop us to do a two for one. A trad and an earth cache. It was disappointing to have the water coiour less than advertised. We would be one of only a few visitors today who can go back for another look with a small carbon footprint... Logged with permission. Thank you Emvy_Us
Round the world trip Made it to New Zealand and will be traveling all around the Islands. I am on my way to Haast. It was raining all day - just had a short break for this cache. I wanted to see the blue water but NO - it was grey today!
Thanks for bringing up this cache!
Vielen Dank fürs legen und pflegen und beste Grüße aus Leipzig!
Thanks for hiding and many greetings from Leipzig/Germany!

We were here a couple of days ago, now logging with permission. Hokitika gorge is so beautiful, although it wasn’t the full aquamarine colour we’ve seen here before. TFTC!
Had been a bit rainy earlier. Nice walk but the water was very gray—due to rain. Cache coords seem to be in the middle of the gorge. Though sending answers from near the rocks somewhat by the wood viewing platform worked. However, to get closer to the GZ I ended up making the terrain difficulty much higher than two. In fact, since you have to rock scramble regardless I’d say the T rating is about a 3 to 4 (Extremely demanding movement over potentially hazardous terrain.) since it could be quite hazardous to fall. But I’m all probably a 3 T. Good luck to all cachers who attempt!
KL6 and I are in NZ for 16 days or so exploring the South Island mostly by campervan—with a few shoulder days in BnBs. We plan to visit the Fjordland first—Milford Sound—and the back track and head all the up the Punakaki Pancake Rocks vía the west coast, stopping by Franz Joseph along the way. Then back down to the lakes, Tekapo, Punaki, Mt Cook, and then Wanaka. Finally we’ll return back to Queenstown after our huge campervan adventure. Lastly back to Australia for a couple nights before heading back home to the USA.
Obviously, we stopped by this cache along the way. We originally had about 171 caches on the list to be near and check out. Whether due to favorites, or a planned stop for the evening. We have planned the adventure using cachetur.no which is amazing by the way. Highly recommend the website and app when you’ve got a lot to see and find. Helps keep you on track and it’s awesome to have a schedule with time estimates of when you’ll arrive at the next destination and if you’re ahead or behind schedule.
Thanks to waiiti20 (adopted by Emvy_Us) for the Cache! Found around 5:56 PM - I often sign as Wæki3 (shorthand for Wæki3_KL6 due to small logs and or KL6 not being with me for the cache find). But this is an earthcache so did we sign!? This is Find #2179.
We have also contributed a lot of caches in the Flagstaff Arizona area, and currently to date we’ve hidden 85 caches. Even if you’re not in the area, I’m really into creating interesting and creative puzzles. I have some clever ones—many to do with logic, math, graphic design, or games. Checkout my certitudes page for a collection of many of the Unknown (Mystery) caches I’ve created (https://www.certitudes.org/feed?u=W%C3%A6ki3_KL6). Perhaps after a few solves, you’ll find yourself in the area.

Thanks for bringing us to this walkway that we keep meaning to visit but just never got around to. The sandflies were out in force today and we had to keep moving to avoid too many bites. Hopefully we managed to get the correct answers while jumping around. Will change to found log once answers okayed. tftc
Today in the heavy rains we vsiti the gorge and also look for the answers of this earthcache.
Beautitul area we enjoy it very much.
The answers are send.

Visited here during our West Coast trip. Awesome place. Looks like walking tracks are being extended even further. Thanks for an earthcache.
We were over in Hokitika for the weekend and made a visit out to the gorge. The water was a grey, milky colour following the recent flooding - sorry to have missed the beautiful blue here that we've seen in other photos, but it's still a lovely gorge to walk through. Questions sent to c/o and permission gained to log this cache, TFTC
What a nice walk and a beautiful spot on the west coast. Really recommended. Thank for this earthcache.
From Hokitika we made our way to this beautiful gorge. It was a cloudy day so the water was not turquoise, nevertheless a beautiful area.
