I've been by this boat a thousand times, but it never crossed my mind to use it for this cache until Muirwoody suggested it.

This is a boat that has been placed on the top of a billboard and used for advertising. It currently has no ad, but it looks like it once advertised boats (I coulldn't make out much of the boat ad), and I remember it used to advertise for a local plumber (We can fix any leaks!). When I was a kid there used to be a cabin (or whatever it was called) covering the steering area of the boat. That has since disappeared.

Tug Irene donated by his wife, Margie Sause, September 2002

The 27-foot tug named Irene was built in 1938 by a family friend, C.J. Sessions, for Henry Sause, Sr. and Curtis Sause. It was designed along the lines of a Columbia River gillnetter with a four-cylinder, 40 horsepower Durant automobile engine. The boat was used to tow log rafts from the Tillamook River across the bay to Garibaldi, where the logs were assembled into seagoing rafts (known as Davis rafts) and towed to Aberdeen Plywood at Aberdeen, Washington. This undertaking was the forerunner to Sause Bros. Ocean Towing Co., Inc., a company that is prominent in the ocean towing industry 64 years later.

Steamboat Arabia

In 1856 a steamboat on the Missouri river hit a submerged tree and sank, and along with it much treasure of dishware, guns, gold, perfume, and Kentucky bourbon.
The passengers were saved, some animals died.
In 1988, some treasure hunters used an old worn river map and found the Steamboat Arabia buried 45' underground, one half mile from the rivers edge. Men and machines then unearthed a discovery of a lifetime.

Board by board the steamboat was retrieved, and much of the cargo was intact. The Steamboat Arabia, and its cargo was moved to the Rivermarket area of KC, and it is now a museum that is very much worth the visit.

Found it today ... Tisri and I were standing at the Golden Hinde (actually at the spot of the virtual cache of the same name) when I remembered there was a locationless for just this sort of thing.

I reached for my GPS, Tisri reached for his ... I took some photos but won't be able to attach them for a couple of days (need to get back to my regular computer before I go through my vacation shots).

Thanks for the cache.

(edit Oct 1st - I've attached the photos but realized that for the GPS shot I actually took the shot before it locked on satelite. I plugged in the co-ords for the cache from those I waypointed a few minutes later)

EDMUND GARDNER, MERSEYSIDE MARITIME MUSEUM, LIVERPOOL, UK

Liverpool Pilot Cutter No 2, 1953
The largest object in National Museums Liverpool’s collections is the Edmund Gardner, a former pilot cutter that can now be found in dry dock outside the Great Western Railway building, opposite the Maritime Museum at the Albert Dock, Liverpool. Entry to the museum, and to go onboard this vessel is free.

During her working life of almost 30 years the Edmund Gardner was essentially a base out in the Irish Sea for the Pilotage Service, providing accommodation for up to 32 pilots at a time. The pilots met all shipping approaching the Mersey and guided them into and out of the docks, to ensure their safety

More details about this vessel can be found at http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/collections/edmundgardner/

This is how Detroit, Michigan made use of an old freighter named The Henry Clay Ford. They took from the pilothouse down and built it into the wall of the museum. The Dossin Great Lake Museum is on the banks of the Detroit River. So it gives the feel that this freighter is pulling out into the river. You can tour the pilothouse and the lower floors from inside the museum.

Found off shore by the lighthouse.

Found this one that has been built as a replica to the Matthew, John Cabot's vessel - Newfoundland, NL. It is in Pasedena, Newfoundland.

Re:

Over 500 years ago John Cabot and his crew set sail for Asia aboard the original " Matthew " hoping to trade goods and commodities with the people who lived there.

However, he finally arrived on the coast of Newfoundland and therefore was the original discoverer of America, not Christopher Columbus as most people are led to believe.

Today one of the replica's of the Matthew sits proudly in Bristol harbour for all to see. The general public are able to board The Matthew as well as embark on trips around the harbour.

In 1997 the replica Matthew followed the same course as John Cabot in 1497 and sailed across to Newfoundland. It carried the same number of crew members as the original and took the same and used the same amount of time to complete the crossing.

** The Matthew is just one part of the proud heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador and ships like this one can be found all over the Island!

Warm Smiles
