Time to revisit the museum after a first sortie years ago whilst having the eyes done at the hospital only going as far as the natural history displays. Gained the GZ after entering via the main entry bypassing the hoards of kiddyboos milling on the grass. Another class visit, lucky them. Up three flight of stairs! Almost as high and as far away from any port like Bluff Hill and it's 10lt bucket only needing to follow the sign; most questions were answered only when workmen moved the safety barrier or just called out the answers for when I stood too far away to read the plaques. One bloke had also been a passenger on the Wahine that day? Puzzle soon nutted out as time ran out for that day to crunch the final for the micro. Took advantage of the handy parking and found the cache as five o'clock somewhere mugglers walked to theirs. Mint tin found and dry logbook signed while standing amongst an island in a sea of traffic. I don't fare too well on the high seas but have enjoyed crossing calmer waters on the TSS Earnslaw, I miss the smell of Ohai coal and the heat blasting up from the boilers. Somewhere under the soot and grime the stoker had a luvly crop of freckles. Thanks for engineering this puzzle U.N.C.L.E.

Gathered the information eventually and the end was a quick discovery. Found with Busy paws and Lyttletonwitch. TFTC

10-Mar-21
Nice easy find by Geomum007 and Lytteltonwitch. Bit of a lonely cache this one! TFTH and the interesting journey. One of the answers was totally elusive, but we put in a 5 and were only 7m out. Cool

10-Mar-21
Took a wee while to get all the information and couldn’t find the answer to one of the questions. Luckily we were able to work it out and cache was a quick find

13-Jul-20
Found with daughter. Ship shape find!

22-Jun-20
First attempt gave me coordinates that didn’t seem right. Messaged CO who confirmed that I had made a mistake. Went back to check my numbers and it seems I didn’t read the names correctly! Out today to sign the log. Easy find at GZ. Tftc

25-Jan-20
Got the coords a while ago with help on one question form the Co. Took a while before I was able to get the cache. The others were buying something in a shop across the road so it was a good opportunity.

thought we got the answers all correct but attempted twice to no avail — FINALLY got it today, third time lucky, a little bit down the road from what we thought. thanks U.N.C.L.E. for the help!

Enjoyed the visit and finding the answers, unfortunately not enough time to get to gz.

Greetings from Wales

Had so much fun finding this. It took Yahlright and I two trips to the museum due to a dying phone battery. A missing coordinate took us up Roslyn Hill to a bench looking over the harbour with an inscription about Harbours on the wooden fence, we thought we were in the right place! Tried to ninja it, but failed. U.N.C.L.E later helped us correct a coordinate and we went and found it after marching for the Dunedin Climate Strike! A rewarding day. TFTC

We really enjoyed this cache. A lot of fun finding the answers in the museum and learning about the history. Thanks!!

20-Aug-19
Thanks for this interesting quiz, U.N.C.L.E., and for the cache. Another FP from me.
I have been down in Dn on & off for the past few weeks, for family reasons. I visited the Museum a couple of times last week & enlisted the help of a friend ; today I found the cache just as the rain set in.

04-Jul-19
Ahoy from California! [^] Spent the morning in the Museum then after lunch went to grab the cache. Finding the clues took rather longer than I expected but the cache itself was easy, no muggles about in the cold drizzle. Thanks for my POTD (puzzle of the day)! CoolCoolCool #1,316

After an event nearby I decided to head up to see if I could get the numbers and set sail for the final. With a bit of help from Gadget169 soon had all I needed and off to the final which was an easy find. Sprung by another cacher who had also been at the event but she had yet to solve the puzzle and was heading home so no time to do so today. I walk past here every week day on my way home from work so now I will always think to myself as I sail on by...Ship Ahoy! There's a cache there TFTC

13-Apr-19
A quick and easy find. Cheers

I need to head out of town to collect enough caches with favourite points to reach the required for the last of the souvenirs. Dunedin fits the bill, and this weekend we are cruising around picking up high fp caches. A beautiful day for wandering around luckily.

Thanks to all CO's for placing and maintaining their caches. Cheers

22-Feb-19
Revisited the required area today and then headed off to GZ armed with answers. Quick find in between muggles passing by. Thanks for the hide!

09-Sep-18
Gathered the numbers and proceeded to GZ only to find the place too busy for a search of likely hiding places to go unnoticed. After another abortive daytime visit I finally decided it would be simpler all round if I returned under cover of darkness. So, at 10pm on a Sunday evening, I was sitting signing the log when a small yappy dog approached, clearly upset that I was there. Eventually it's owners called it back & they continued on their nocturnal walk, leaving me free to replace the log and return home for a hot cuppa. All in all a fun wee cache that deserves a favourite. TFTC

Got it!!! Been working on this one for a while and I just could not find one answer. I gave up and used Google.. managed to get the cache tonight.. pretty quiet at 8:30 !

23-Jun-18
I went with using "sources other than the aforementioned" and got a partial solve which gave me some coordinates in a likely looking place. I was nearby having breakfast and decided to see if my hunch was right afterwards. turned out it was, found the container in the second place I looked. Cheers and TFTC

I hadn’t been to this floor since I was a kid as I remember I always found it boring. Wasn’t boring at all today, I must have learned to appreciate things more as an adult. Smile Had trouble finding a couple of the answers but finally got them all within an hour. Short drive to the cache and log was soon signed. Blowing a gale today so unfortunately didn’t stay long in the final location. Thanks for a great puzzle cache.

06-Feb-18
Entered my name into the ship's log today after a great time hanging out in one of my favourite museum rooms yesterday.

14-Jan-18
Thought it might a bit tricky doing one of these without GPS but turns out you can just enter the coordinates into Google Maps and BOOM! Thanks for the history tour!

14-Jan-18
Awesome fun finding the coordinates with the chicks and Silver Penny

04-Aug-17
It took a couple of visits to sort out the necessary information and then several months to get around to doing the final part. I did an initial search in one direction before trying another direction before striking the goodies. Nice little cache overall.

06-Jul-17
Didn't find that cache but pretty sure the coordinates are correct :/

This is a topic I have a strong interest in as I have very long-standing (but slightly indirect) associations with the organisation that is the subject of this puzzle. I was even able to answer a couple of the questions from memory! So I made a point of going and getting the answers while staying in Dunedin this week. Had a pleasant ramble around some fascinating exhibits after lunch today (they really are very well done and I hadn't realised that the display existed) and I didn't take long at all to get the answers I needed. I had guessed where the final might be but couldn't remember the exact location although I have probably been there in past years when the company was functioning. So no surprises there, went for a pleasant walk and found the cache after just a few minutes. Signed log, thanks for the cache and the memories, and definitely worth a favourite point!

Great fun!

Yay, found!! Got most of the answers months ago and today with Frame Family finished and had co-ords for final. A quick park and find. TFTC

I forgot to log this when I found it a week or so ago, But definately remember signing the log so not sure what happened maybe my phone died and then I forgot.

11-Oct-16
I collected the necessary information a few weeks ago and tonight I made a quick stop after rehearsal. I was a bit perturbed to see there were some muggles across the road. Oh hang on minute I know one of those muggles. My brother was playing ingress with some friends so I figured I could just go for it. I then went over the road for chat. According to my brother they had been talking about how pokemon go was making ingress look old, then I rocked up geocaching. At least, I retorted, that I find real physical objects as I waved the cache under their noses. After a wee chat I then went back and replaced the cache. Thanks Smile

Both Papa and Guwapo thoroughly enjoyed this cache. Papa loves visiting this hall, the skill involved in some of the models on display is just amazing. It was fathers day today so Papa got decide on the afternoon activity and this cache had been on the list for some time. The required info was retrieved in due course and although more time could be spent browsing the models it was time to go and find the cache. The location was where it was expected to be found. Nothing wrong with an eclipse tin Smile. A favourite on many fronts!! Salamat!

31-Jul-16
I can still hear the bells ringing as successive groups of children came in and gave them all a good yank.

I learnt a lot! I'd been in this room before but hadnt really read all the descriptions, I mostly marvel at the model making.

One clue eluded us for nearly half an hour!

Thanks for the cache Smile

31-Jul-16
I decided I wanted this cache off my 3mi radius, so Hevic and I headed to the museum yesterday despite the bitter cold and freezing rain. It took us a little while to find the information but at least it was warm inside! We picked up the cache on the way out to Mosgiel - rather grateful that certain new mobile phone apps are out as they provided the perfect cover story. Cheers!

Nice straightforward puzzle and hide.
Thanks.

Thanks to help from U.N.C.L.E. we tried again with the correct coordinates. Left this one 'till Christmas day, as a special treat. TFTC!

10-Dec-15
Spent a lovely afternoon in the museum solving the clues. It took quite a while but we got them all in the end. We found coordinates and headed off to the cache location. It was quite a walk, but we got there in the end. By this time I was feeling confused about the muggle warnings, as the cache was on a very quiet street. But we found the cache in no time, only to open the log book and discover we had found "Tolerant Secret"! We got the coordinates wrong and they led us to within 10 m of another geocache! A lucky accidental find for us, not sure where we went wrong with this one though.

13-Sep-15
What an awesome cache this was. Spent quite a lot of time looking for the info required to complete this one. It was a lot of fun and I eventually asked a staff member if she knew of a particular ship for some details. but alas she didn't. But she did tell me about a cache that was hidden in the museum but not where it is. So now I would like to try and find the start to that one so I can complete it as well. Oh well it was a lot of fun and TFTC ☺

18-Aug-15
Stopped off on way home from Waiora scout camp, got the scouts to hunt it down. Its about time I did this as it has been a year since I have had the coordinates. Tftc. Smile

16-Aug-15
Thanks Hill55 for helping me do this cache.

13-Jun-15
Gathered the info whilst seeking shelter from the storm yesterday (and as Baby and Mrs Rex recovered from the excitement of the butterfly house!), and made the find today, on a day perhaps even chillier. Still, warmed by the find, as well as the final AND the research that had to be undertaken- so fascinated, in spite of even getting sea sick on terra firma! Cheers U.N.C.L.E.

Interesting tree nearby with a pretty knitted jersey up its truck and branches.

About five months ago I had the pleasure of completing the requirements for this thoughly enjoyable cache and finally today I had the opportunity to make the final find in a most appropriate area.
This cache I would recommend and it is well deserving of more than one favourite I can give it.
Thanks for the enjoyment and education.

Thank you my grandson and I have had a lot of fun with this one. Watch out for those wahines.
Found today and a favourite for us.

It took us some time to gather the required info. so we were pleased when our co-ords took us to a likely looking spot and we made a quick find. Found with debsnz

16-Sep-14
We'd gathered the required info. a week or so ago and had worked out the co-ords but waited for a 'dot' day to stop for the final. Really like how the start and the final tie in together. Found with Aoraki Sheep.

We used to be familiar with this gallery (and the sound of every bell in it) so it was enjoyable to visit again to discover the newer information that's been added... had to read it thoroughly, that's for sure! The bells are still very very popular Big Grin. Got around to visiting the very appropriate final GZ today.

31-Aug-14
Had fun doing this one

31-Aug-14
Enjoyed this one Needed a little help with a missing number but got there in the end Thanks

16-Aug-14
Yes, last one needed for the 7 Souvenirs of August.

We were at the museum early for the DunDead Ignite talks and decided to try and get this puzzle done. We were lucky that the zombies in the museum were keeping the muggles busy. Pandajayne and I had almost the entire area to ourselves for the time it took us to find everything... some I'm sure we found more by pure luck.

At the GZ was surprised by the number of muggles we had to dodge. The co-ords had us about 20ft away from where the cache was. Was a good little hunt and we used our won zombie apocalypse survival kit a cover, pretending to rest carrying it home.

A really enjoyable one Smile

Last week I spent some time sheltering from the storm and had a very informative and nostalgic hour seeking out the information to find the coords. I was a little unnerved when a small boy clanged the bell not only once on arrival, but also when he was leaving!
Gz was a little bit of a moving target, but got there in the end.
Thanks for the fun, U.N.C.L.E.!

MAnaged to sqeeze this in one in today. Left the writing stick in the car, but managed to leave my mark below Bitsprayer. Thanks for the info and the cache.

Great afternoon caching in the Dunedin Area, have not cached down here a about 6 months, still have heaps to do.

Thanks Bitsprayer.

I had a silly wisdom tooth that was not behaving... and it needed to get pulled. So spur of the moment drove down to Dunedin to mum's house to go get it done there!

Tooth was done the day before, so what better way to spend the ay of recovery than caching?! Razz

What a fun multi! Really enjoyed this one which we colleted the info for after having lunch at the museum cafe. Coords looked a little funny on the GPS, but once we got there, we knew we were in the right spot Smile

My GPS wasn't turning on, but with the hint, and having seen the map, managed to find the cache anyways.

Consec caching day # 579

TFTC!! Smile

I knew there would be an opportunity to visit the location in the near future! We had a lovely lunch with friends, and then headed to the relevant area. It took a bit of time to locate the information required, but this was very enjoyable, especially since my dad used to build boats, albeit those designed for large rivers rather than the sea. I expected the final somewhere else, but only because I had no idea what was at the actual final location!! Lovely connection there, thanks for the fun puzzle!!!

I was rained off from another quest this morning and this was next on my list.
After having found a parking spot I entered the building and navigated my way to where I wanted to be.
I was totally blown away by this room!. Hats off to the makers of these models and to those responsible for the rest of the display. .
I spent several hours wandering and reading - absolutely fascinating and all appeared to be local.
I was unable to find two of the answers I required this time but it certainly was time well spent.
If I never hear another Ships Bell that will suit me!
Thanks for bringing me here

An update to the proximity issue raised in earlier notes. The details of a cache closer than 161m to the final of this cache have been provided. The claim is that this cache is 159m from the final for Ship Ahoy and thus Ship Ahoy violates the proximity rule by 2m. When placing this cache I was aware of the existence of the pre-existing cache and used my GPS receiver to take a distance reading from the final of Ship Ahoy to the pre-existing one. That showed that the two caches were (just) outside the proximity rule. Upon re-doing the reading yesterday GPS was showing a distance of 160m between the two. We seem to be looking at distances of 2-3 metres which is within the generally accepted margin-of-error for GPS which is the reason the readings on different days vary by these amounts. Assuming the "tool" used by the reviewer showed that Ship Ahoy was 2m within the proximity rule (and it may just have easily have said everything was fine) the reviewer obviously (and correctly in my view) regarded the amount as too minor to worry about and within accepted margins of error.

22-Apr-14
Are the CO and Publisher aware that this breaches proximity rules?

22-Apr-14
Found. Longer log to come.

22-Apr-14
I relied on the reviewer to check for cache proximity. After all, they are the ones who have the "tools" to do so. The cache appears to have passed that test. Having said that, I checked distance to all known caches near the location of the final and am not aware of any breach of the proximity rules. If stegan believes he knows better then could he please provide details. He is also welcome to post a "Needs Archived" log so that the reviewer can investigate. Let's nip this in the bud now. If it is a reference to the dummy co-ords being close to another cache then it is the accepted convention (in NZ at least) that dummy start co-ords for a puzzle cache, where there is no physical cache hidden at those co-ords, are not generally subject to the proximity rule. If this is what stegan is getting at then obviously the reviewer cleared the cache. If that is not what he is referring to then, once again, could stegan please provide the necessary info so that both CO and reviewer can investigate. Neither of us can investigate on the basis of the information supplied thus far.

Posting a maintenance log to remove "Needs Maintenance" icon on the basis that the cache doesn't actually require any maintenance.

On a cold dreary Dunedin day this cache offered the perfect opportunity to visit whiskasnz's favourite place. After a fair bit of reading and searching we managed to find all the answers to the quiz and it then it was just a matter of following the GPS to the final. whiskasnz found the container and it was then that the final location made sense. It's nice to see this area being improved in recent times. FTF with whiskasnz at 2.40pm. Thanks U.N.C.L.E. for the history lesson.

A cache that starts in my favourite place in Dunedin. Even though dakotacats did most of the searching for the quiz answers I found the one answer she was stuck on. We wondered where the final was and when we got to GZ dakotacats showed me the reason. Thank you U.N.C.L.E. FTF with dakotacats at 2.40pm.
