We found Zwickau (Germany)
Today on our trip we drive through Zwickau (Germany).
My storage card didn´t work at the download from the welcome sign. We took a picture from the Internet. I hope that is o.k.

Some about Zwickau:
The home of 103 000 inhabitants, Zwickau is the Free State of Saxony’s fourth-largest city, surpassed in size only by Dresden, Leipzig and Chemnitz. Situated on the river Mulde, this city is internationally known as the birthplace of the composer Robert Schumann (1810-1856) and the artist of the Brücke movement Max Pechstein (1881-1955). Zwickau is particularly committed to the legacy of its great sons. This becomes evident in the International Robert Schumann Piano and Song Competitions and the International Choir Competitions. The economic region of Chemnitz-Zwickau is among the most important growth regions in Saxony and the new German states.

This makes kill # 208 for us, thanks for the hunt.

Zittlestown, MD has no welcome sign, but it should have. It appears on both Map Quest and Terra Serve maps at N 39º 29.12 W 77º 37.43. My coordinates are for the street sign in the photo, west of Moser Rd. The town consists of a few scattered homes along alt. Rt. 40, (the National Road) and some farm buildings and a church down the steep hillside. However, Zittlestown is also the sight of the historic South Mountain Inn and Dahlgren Chapel, open to the public during the summer months. The AT runs crosses Rt. 40 nearby and Washington Monument State Park is only about a mile away. The battle of South Mountain, a preliminary to Antietam, was fought in the proximity. The town even has its own ghost, the Snarley Yow, the story of which can be accessed at http://wesclark.com/jw/s_yow.html

Found that Z-Sign in the little village Zicherie, Lower Saxony, Germany. After WW2 the Village was divided by the German-German Border from its fellow neighbour village Boeckwitz. It´s been a shame! The villages were so close, that people in principle could have talk to each others, but had no chance to cross the fence. We are happy to see, that this is part of the past, and that after the reunification people can visit each others nowadays. Thanks to CacheUsIfYouCan for the cache. Always happy hunting!

Zoe, Oklahoma is located in southeast Oklahoma in LeFlore County near the Arkansas border. While it has no official Welcome sign it can be found on most maps & as a town on the net. The only 2 things I could find with a name on it was the cemetery & a street sign. Even the Community Center has no name on it other than Community Center.
The community was named for Zoe Thomason. I think he may be a resident of the cemetery now.

Zebulon - located in Pike County, KY near the city of Pikeville, all named for Gen. Zebulon M. Pike.

Zutphen is a town in the East of the Netherlands, with a population of around 30 to 40.000 people. So it's a small city which has a great history because it's a trading city which is next to the river " De Ijssel". These kind of city where called in the early days (and still) "Hanzesteden".

Thanks for this funny cache!

Wow, can ytou believe it, another place name with a Z in England! This is Zempson in Devon, a tiny hamlet just north-east of South Brent near Harbourneford. It is big enough to have an official signpost at Dean Cross, but the welcome sign leaves a little bit to be desired!

It's not famous for anything I'm afraid, apart from maybe being a place name in Devon beginning with Z that no-one knew existed!

Thanks for the cache,

This picture was taken on the edge of the city of Zele, in the eastern part of flanders, Belgium.

Some historic facts Razz :
Zele was first mentioned around 800 AD
when Charles the great donated the region to Sint-
Ludgerus, founder of the abbey of Werden (Essen,
Germany). The monks built a first church before 1141 AD.
Part of the village went up into flames in 1452 AD during the battle between rebels from the city of Ghent and the army of the Count of Flanders. The monks returned to Werden. The church burned again in 1485 AD. Between 1699-1704, the baroque church of Sint Ludgeruswas built.
Between WW1 and WW2, the city suffered little material damage. Once, Zele was a known textile centre. In the large industrial area (from the sixties on), there is a lot of variation: metal, textile, glass fibre,
food, print factories, construction and road building factories.
The city now has more than 20.000 inhabitants and has a surface of 3.305 hectare.

This is the (very small) community of Zion located within the City of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario. Unfortuntaly, it's too small to merit a welcome sign, so we're hoping the church sign will be sufficient.

Zion is surrounded by farms, many of which are mennonite, and contains only a church and a mennonite school. It can also usually only be found on a good backroads map.

This is a welcome sign of the city of Zurich, Switzerland. Zurich is probably the largest city within Switzerland, with a population of more than 400'000.
Most city and village signs you will see when travelling in Switzerland have a white text on a blue background, because they are on major roads and probably you most often will use those.
This one has a black text and a white background, meaning that the sign is on a lower level road. The disadvantage, however, is, that it is hard to read, because the reflections are so strong.
Best regards, PicoKnirps

Addendum: Today, 24 Sep 2005, I made a photograph of the same welcome sign during daytime - it is much better readable, isn't it?

Zabrusany - small town in north Bohemia, Czech republic

A very long time Zwentendorf was a complete unknown village in Austria. In 1977/78 there was built the first nuclear power station of Austria near this village. But at a very late time of the building progress the voices in Austria against nuclear power got louder and louder. Therefore on 5th of November 1978 a national referendum was held and Austria voted against the use of nuclear power with 50.47%. So the building process of the power station was stopped immediately and since this time stamp Austria has its own historic nuclear power station ruin which was never ever finished and used but as well never ever been broken down. You can still visit the place and have a look at the gigantic monument which lies peaceful in the fields near the Danube remembering at the fierce discussions of 1978.
This was the history how Zwentendorf became famous all over Austria and the neighbour countries in a very funny and unconventional way.

Happy Caching

Zig, Missouri
Russ and I did a search in Microsoft Mappoint to find this 'Z' town. We set out on a 400 mile trek to find its welcome sign. After traveling one-lane gravel and dirt roads, having to backtrack several times to due bridges being out, and having to move a newly killed deer out of the road - we found Zig - or where it used to be.
When we arrived, it was already dark, and we sat on the end of a gravel road re-verifying our coordinates.
As we were doing this, headlights from an ATV came up behind us, and a man asked if he could help us. Turns out that this man owns the 500 acres surrounding this road. We told him we were on a hunt for 'Zig'. He said that the town used to exist here with had a lumbermill as its hub. He said that we could contact Alfie Ziegler in Kirksville, who is a woman in her nineties who is a relative of the Zieglers who started the town. He pointed out Ziegler road, which is a street named for the Ziegler family who built the town and used to live here. A link to some history can be found here: http://library.truman.edu/manuscripts/zeigler.htm
After chatting with Frank for awhile, we learned that he left a career in photo journalism in order to raise prairie grasses and wildflowers, and if it had not been dark we would have seen a kalidoscope of colors around us.
He invited us to come back when we could better appreciate the beautiful scene of acres of wildflowers. A link to his web site can be found here:
http://frankoberle.com/

While we did not find an actual welcome sign, Russ and I did feel welcomed and enlightned, and plan to revisit we we could see it better.

Earlier someone has stated that there are only 3 places in SW England beginning with Z, but they ignored the 3 further SW, in Cornwall. The 2 better known ones, Zelah and Zennor have already been logged, but there is yet another village called Zoar, in Cornwall. If you were to visit Goonhilly Down Earthstation, with 20+ mega sattelite dishes, then about 3 miles further is this village. It has about 15 - 20 houses, and a garage, which is the only sign giving the name of the village. Visitted on 18/8/05 but had to wait to get photo developped, need to get digi camera fixed.

This is Zephyr, a town just north of Toronto Canada. The locals are refered to Zephyreans, and there are about 500 Zephyrean moogles. One of the industries I noticed was elk farming and llama sheering. Oddly enough, Zephyr has not only signs on the edge of town, but right at the center as well!

We claimed another 'Z' town a couple days ago, then found ourselves going right by Zoar Village, Ohio on I-77. Zoar was founded in the early 1800's by a group of Zoarists from Germany. Couldn't resist adding a Note for this place too. Here we are at the Zoar sign.

We found this little village of Graubünden in Switzerland.

13-Jul-05
The tiny village of Zoar in Dartmoor, Devon, South-West England. Consisting of only a couple of cottages, a farm, and a Methodist Church, Zoar is one of only three places beginning with the letter 'Z' in the whole of SW England (the other two Zeal Monachorum and South Zeal have already been logged!). After locating this website here, stating all the towns and villages of Devon I was surprised to see another place beginning with Z, but on arrival the place was so little, the only sign I could find was on the church, hence why I've also included the link!
Many thanks,
The Hancock Clan

Zilzie, Queensland, Australia. There was ownly two towns we could find in Queensland beginning with 'Z', one had already been logged the other was 800km away. Luckily when a family reunion brought us near to Zilzie we were able to take the time to find a welcome sign.

Apparently M. Wilbraham had come over from Great Britain on the 'Royal Dane' in 1865 to see what sort of a land 'Queensland' was. He squatted on an area of land with approximately 6 miles of beachside frontage extending from Emu Park to Cawarral Creek. When he was recalled to the army he left the land in the charge of Lieutenant Colonel Armitage and disposed of the land a number of years later when he returned. This land is Zilzie.
