The present lighthouse was built in 1926 and is located on the Headlands at Hartlepool
Here in Nova Scotia Canada, we are on the Atlantic Ocean, and there are dozens upon dozens of lighthouses. The most famous is at Peggy's Cove(N 44 29.978 W063 55.427)which is the only lighthouse in North America with a functional post office in the bottom level. Legend says it is named for Margaret, the only known survivor of a ship wreck in the 1800's. It is also one of the most photographed in the world. The log waypoint is a view of Halifax Harbour Nova Scotia and Devils Island lighthouse circa 1852. The windswept Island used to have a north and a south lighthouse, but the south remains today. The last two pics are far more interesting. Many lighthouses were replaced with beacons over the years. The pic at the beginning of the road tells a story, and the one at the end tells another. This is from the Hubbards area of Nova Scotia around N44 36.081 W 064 03.581.
The web link www.nslps.com/lighthouse_lists.asp has all our lighthouses and great pics and facts, but the last two pics here we love the best. TFTC

This lighthouse is found in Southside, AL. It is a newer landmark that was built in a neighborhood of river side homes. It gets a lot of attention and is sure to be a great piece of history.
We first heard about this lighthouse when I saw an article about it in "Our State" magazine. So when I went to visit my in-laws earlier this month, we decided to stop by for a visit on our way back.
This lighthouse at Plymouth, North Carolina and is unusual in a couple of ways. First, it's not located on a river, not on the ocean. And secondly, it's built up on stilts. The original lighthouse was built in 1866 and was located in the middle of the Roanoke River, and the lighthouse keeper would stay on it for months at a time.
It burned and was replaced within a year. In 1886 it was destroyed by ice and replaced. When decommisioned it was purchased and moved to Edenton, N.C. for use as a home. When the owner died, he passed it on to his son. It has since fallen into disrepair. The town of Plymouth tried to buy it from the owner so they could restore it, but he put a $1,000,000 price tag on it, so they built an exact replica which is what this lighthouse is. It was completed and opened in 2003.

This lighthouse is located in Mackinaw City, Michigan. It was currently closed for the winter and obviously not in use anymore. It faces out into Lake Huron near where Huron and Michigan merge. It is a popular tourist attraction and is near Fort Michillmackinac and Mackinaw Island.
The lighthouse of Harmom Park in Kearney, Nebraska - not exactly a big one, but it is a lighthouse.
This is the Stanley Park Lighthouse and can be found in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. TFTC and Happy New Year!

This is actually the view from "Cache With a View #4 - Miramichi Bay. The lighthouse is on Chantry Island, as is one of a series of lighthouses along the east coast of Lake Huron, meant to help lakers navigate the dark coast of Lake Huron during the years of settlement in the late 1800's. The lighthouse, while automated, is still manintained and is now a bird sanctuary. Tours can be had out by boat to the lighthouse in the summer.

This is Greencape lighthouse, in Ben Boyd National Park, southern New South Wales, Australia. My wife and I were camping nearby so I took photos on the off chance that it had not already been logged.
The lighthouse was built in 1883 and was the first cast concrete lighthouse in Australia. The old tower was decomissioned in 1992 and a new light installed in front, on a metal skeleton tower. This new light is solar powered. All info is at this address. http://www.lighthouse.net.au/lights/NSW/Green%20Cape/Green%20Cape.htm

Found this lighthouse in Hamburg near Elbe River in the north of Germany. Thanks for the cache.
One of my favorite, quaint lighthouses located in Narragansett Bay just off of Newport, Rhode Island. You can now be the lighthouse keeper by renting the lighthouse for a week at a time.
The Rose Island Lighthouse
A mile offshore and a century in the past
lies the little lighthouse that could.
Beyond the reach of Newport’s utility lines and services, the Rose Island Lighthouse stands as an independent, energy-efficient building that was home to keepers and their families for over a hundred years.
After the Newport Bridge was built the Lighthouse was abandoned and became badly vandalized. Over the course of the next eight years, members of the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation cleaned out and restored it to its 1912 appearance, installing new, environmentally sensitive utility systems for heat, water, sewer and electricity.
On August 7, 1993, when the funds had been raised to pay all the restoration bills, the light in the tower was joyously relit. The Rose Island Light is currently listed on charts as a private aid to navigation, and it is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Rose Island Lighthouse is maintained by keepers who sign on for a week at a time as part of our environmental education program, where people of all ages learn about the Lighthouse’s history and they experience first-hand the keeper’s self-sufficient, resourceful way of life...lessons that last a lifetime.
Our mission: To preserve the historic and environmental integrity of Rose Island, to maintain and operate its Lighthouse and to provide education and public access for all people.

I found this one near Savannna Ga. It is opened to public everyday except Tuesday. You guessed it we were there on Tuesday. Talk about timing.
Found this lighthouse mostly used now for some touristic purposes. Not much information was available about it.
Thanks!
Thanks!
We found this lighthouse on Greenfield road in Deerfield, Mass.. We were very surprise to find it on this road.
This lighthouse was found at Myers Park in Lansing, New York on Myers Road. It is on the shores of Cayuga Lake. It was built in 1998 and is an active lighthouse. It is about 40 feet high.
Wow, you're being awfully generous with the duplicated finds! I was disappointed to see the Buffalo Main Lighthouse was already taken, as this summer I had an elongated penny die made of it! Buffalo at one point actually had 9 lighthouses, one of them being a ship (which sank during a storm and has been raised since!)
But enough of the lighthouse I CAN'T log, on with the one I can!
I don't know that this one actually has a name, as it is a smaller lighthouse in a park, standing at the head of a dam. So lets call it the Como Park/Cayuga Dam lighthouse!
I am also incredibly surprised that noone has listed possibly the most famous lighthouse of all...the Statue if Liberty. While I have several pictures of her, too, they were all taken BG (Before Geocaching).

Found this lighthouse from a little distance.
It's located at Pellworm, Germany.
It is still in use (since 1907!).
Since 1998 there where more then 1500 marriages on this lighthouse.

This lighthouse is situated at the western end of Lake Ontario at the entrance to Hamilton harbour in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. A wooden lighthouse built in 1837 safeguarded ships approaching the canal. The light and the keeper's dwelling were destroyed by fire in 1856. They were replaced by a 55' high circular limestone tower in 1858 and a brick one storey lighthouse keeper's dwelling in 1857. The lighthouse served as a vital navigational aid for cargo ships and pleasure craft until it was decommisioned in 1961. It's main beacon was then installed on the adjacent lift bridge. TFTC
Finally, I wanted to log this lighthouse since I placed a cache nearby - that was somewhere in april. Now I made some pictures. This one ("Tinsdal") is the upper light to the lighthouse "Wittenbergen", which was already logged by HHL in 2003. It was build in 1899. Until 1960 it was also used with the lighthouse Billerbeck, which was then demolished. The Lighthouses are located in the west of Hamburg, Germany
This Locationless represents our 70th find!
This lighthouse is one of two located at Nash Point, South Wales. The other of these has been logged previously, and exists 302 metres from this.
Nash Lighthouse was designed by James Walker, the Engineer-in-Chief to Trinity House, in 1832 to mark the sandbanks off the point at the entrance to the Bristol Channel. The decision to build it followed a public outcry after the passenger steamer FROLIC was wrecked with heavy loss of life in 1830.
Two circular towers were built each with massive walls and a stone gallery. The eastern, or high lighthouse being 37 metres high and the western or low lighthouse 25 metres high. Placed 302 metres apart they provided leading lights to indicate safe passage past the sandbanks. Today the low lighthouse has been abandoned and the high lighthouse has now been automated although this had the distinction of being the last manned lighthouse in Wales, the keepers leaving in August 2000.

Chicago, Illinois
Chicago Harbor at Navy Pier
As a result of the harbor's position at the foot of the lake, wave action driven by northeast winds would drive sand into the southern shore, keeping the waters shallow at the river's entrance. Schooners bound for Chicago were thus forced to anchor a half mile offshore, with their cargoes transferred to lighters, which would make the trip through the shallows to the docks at the river mouth. Responding to this problem, the Federal Government appropriated $25,000 for improvements to the harbor in 1833. Under the direction of the Bureau of Topographical Engineers, work on the harbor improvements began the following year with the dredging of a channel from the deep lake water to the mouth of the river. As the town grew around it, Fort Dearborn was decommissioned in that same year, its grounds to gradually transform into what would become Grant Park.
By 1835 the work had progressed sufficiently to allow the one hundred-ton schooner ILLINOIS to enter the Chicago River. In 1837, with a population of 4,170 the town of Chicago was officially incorporated, work on a 1,1852 south pier was completed, and construction began on a 1,200-foot north pier to guard the opposite side of the new channel.
While fully automated in 1979, the light still exhibits its prize winning Third Order Fresnel lens, and while most of today's vessels use Loran, Radar or GPS to find their way into the safety of Chicago Harbor, the proud tower still displays its reassuring beam to welcome mariners to the Windy City.

Bois Blanc Island Lighthouse National Historic Site of Canada
In 1961 the lighthouse was designated a national historic site on the basis of being "a point of attack by American Patriots during the troubles of 1837-1838."
The lighthouse on the southern end of Bois Blanc Island was constructed by the government of Upper Canada in 1836, just before the Rebellion crisis of 1837-1838.

These are the coords for the Big Sable Lighthouse, located on Lake Michigan in Ludington State Park. The picture was taken at the top of the lighthouse. You can see just the tip of my GPS hanging from my neck - didn't plan ahead to get it into the picture, too! Hope it's still ok.
This one is a little tricky yo get to, as it's 4 natical miless off the coast. We sailed up here this weekend from Cape Town (some 35 nautical miles further south) en route to another port. The lighthouse itself was built in 1893, on this 220 hectare island. The structure is a 28 meters of cast iron. The lighthouse remains manned to this day. So many shipwrecks had occurred on this island in the past that rabbits and tortoises were left on the island to feed survivors! Today the island is a major breeding ground for several bird species, including the African Pengiun. B&F
This lighthouse stands on Neuwerk, a small island in the mouth of the Elbe which belongs to Hamburg, Germany. It was built from 1300 to 1310 for protection against pirates. in 1815 it became a lighthouse.

Ninini Point Lighthouse, Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii
This beautiful lighthouse was built in 1932 to replace a wood and concrete structure that had been there since 1906.
The current structure stands 86-feet high (116-feet including the fresnel lens) and was automated in 1953.
The lighthouse overlooks Nawiliwili Bay. There is no full-time lightkeeper at the tower but occasionally a maintenance volunteer will allow visitors climb to the top.
I took these photos earlier this year while seeking "Whale Watching At Ninini Point" (GCBFE8) which is very near the lighthouse. Sorry, I neglected to take a photo of my GPSr while there and hope the cache owner can still accept my find. I plan to fly back to Kauai within a month from now and hope to get photos then. Mahalo!

This lighthouse was built 1886/87 by the shipyard AG Weser for the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, Germany. Until 1922 it was on duty to guide the ships through the Wurster Watt, the Outer Weser. This is today still a difficult passage for ships and was a dangerous place for crews in all times. Numerous wrecks are in this part of the Weser. 1922 the canal changed and the building became obsolete.

This lighthouse is located on a small island off the northwest corner of Hong Kong Island with a channel about 500 metres wide separating it from Hong Kong. It was built circa 1875 and for over a hundred years it has served as a tropical cyclone and monsoon signal warning station. There is now also an automated weather station located here as well - the high point on this tiny island is almost 90 metres.

Flamborough Head Lighthouse, in Yorkshire, was designed by Samuel Wyatt and was built by John Matson of Bridlington in 1806 at a cost of £8,000. The original oil-burning lighting apparatus was designed by George Robinson and consisted of a rotating vertical shaft to which were fixed 21 parabolic reflectors, seven on each of the three sides of the frame. Red glass covered reflectors on each side, which allowed for two white flashes followed by one red flash. This was an innovation quickly adopted elsewhere. The lighthouse serves as a waypoint for deep sea vessels and coastal traffic as well as marking the headland for vessels heading for the ports of Scarborough and Bridlington. In 1940 the Lighthouse was electrified. It was automated in early 1996, the keepers finally leaving in May of that year.

This lighthouse is located on the South side of Georges Island at the entrance to Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada. I'm not to sure of its history but will endeavour to dig up some of its past and embellish this log entry. The coordinates included are the actual location of the lighthouse while I snapped the pics from a couple of hundred meters away as it's darned near impossible to get them otherwise (protected area)

This lighthouse is a maritime navigation aid, and is on the mainland side of Tjeldsundet, a sound between the mainland and the largest island in Norway, Hinnøya. In the summer a lot of cruise ships go here on their way to North Cape and Svalbard. In the back is the bridge from the mainland to the island.

This is the George's Island Lighthouse, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The original lighthouse was established in 1876 but was destroyed by fire in 1916. It was replaced by this unit in 1917. The current lighthouse is an octagonal concrete structure surmounted by an aluminum lantern. The tower is painted white and the lantern red.
The light was group occulting white until 1922 when a 4th order dioptric lens was installed. The light was flashing green until 1977. In 1973 a fluorescent red stripe was painted on the south side of the tower and in 1992 an electric lantern was installed. It serves as a range light for Halifax Harbour and shows a flashing white light with increased intensity on the line of range .

Port Maitland, Nova Scotia Lighthouse –
The first lighthouses in Port Maitland were erected in 1884 and 1897 at the South wharf. In 1938, the remaining lighthouse was moved to the end of the Babine wharf, and in 1963 was moved to where the coordinates are – which is the old lighthouse, now an automated foghorn, pictured in the log entry. The story comes full circle when the Government built an automated solar light on the end of the North Wharf in 1982.
One of the pictures shows the old lighthouse and foghorn with the new solar light in the background.
