This Model Train Museum claims to be the largest international collection and display in the world and can be found on Granville Island, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. TFTC and Happy New Year!
THE WORLD'S BIGGEST HELMET! Have seen this helmet for about 7 months and wasn't really sure it was a helmet. Finally stopped and talked to the owner. They are building a trailer for the football helmet which will have a lift to load the helmet when they go to the OU games. They are also in the process of constructing a racing car helmet and will interchange the helmets for the two events. This is the biggest helmet I have ever seen. It was right next to a fence facing the expressway. Took some pictures from the side but not impressive enough. Stopped today on the narrow shoulder of the expressway to get a shot of the front for the full effect.
We found this Mondo´s Biggest in Grietsel, Germany(Friesland). These Lighttower´s Name is Campen.

This is the world's biggest Portuguese Flag! It was raised with a crane on September 11th 2005. It is 20x12 meters (240 square meters) and can be seen a few kms away.
The proof is on an excerpt taken from the Town Hall official web-page (http://www.cm-lisboa.pt/?id_item=10143&id_categoria=11)
Three pictures to show just how big this flag is!
Excerpt:

This is the largest Stone Circle in the World located at Avebury in Wiltshire England. Very cold today but warmed up after a walk around the stones.
Avebury is the largest stone circle in the world: it is 427m (1401ft) in diameter covers an area of some 28 acres (11.5 ha). Although not so immediately impressive as Stonehenge, it is an extraordinary site formed by a huge circular bank (a mile round), a massive ditch now only a half its original depth, and a great ring of 98 sarsen slabs enclosing two smaller circles of 30 stones each and other settings and arrangements of stones.
The outer bank, still very impressive, was originally 17m (55ft) high from ditch bottom to bank top. The stones, each weighing about 40 tons or more, were left rough and not dressed as were the Stonehenge blocks. They were obtained from the same place, the nearby Marlborough Downs. Now there are only 27 in place, because a few hundred years ago many of the stones were broken up by lighting fires beneath them and pouring cold water over them. They were then used to construct the present village which grew up within the earthwork (one of the buildings of the village houses the tiny but very interesting Alexander Keiller Museum, with many of the archaeological finds of the site; it is well worth visiting).
In the 14th century some of the stones were buried. In that period, a man was killed by one of the stones falling over unexpectedly in the pit which was being prepared for its burial. No attempt was made to extract his body. A pair of scissors, a lancet, and three silver coins were found next the poor skeleton, and the stone is now called the Barber's Stone. Other remarkable stones are the Swindon Stone, the largest (it weighs about 60 tons), the Devil's Chair (local legends attribute mystic powers to the stone such as the ability to summon the devil if you run round it 100 times anti-clockwise) and the Repaired Stone, which has been reconstructed in an odd shape.
The two smaller circles within the great ring were probably the heart of the ritual or ceremony. Of the northern one, only few stones are visible. Two of the central ones are called The Cove and may have been erected first, even before the great circle. Shortly before mid-summer 1996 they were daubed with graffiti, but they were promptly cleaned by a sculpture restoration team, as the megalithic monument is in care of the National Trust.

I found this big Hersheys bar in a sav-on store. It's located in Escondido Ca. The net wt. of it was 5 pounds.
That's one bar of chocolate that you have to share, who on earth could eat that whole thing. Thanks for the fun!

Deutsches Bergbau-Museum - the largest mining museum in the world
The pithead gear of the disused Germania colliery above the German Mining Museum in Bochum dominates the horizon for miles around. Visitors can ride to the top of the cage and look down on the city and many parts of the Ruhrgebiet far beyond.
The museum, built in the 1930s, was designed by the well-known industrial architect Fritz Schupp. It houses a comprehensive collection of items dealing with the history of mining all over the world. The exhibits are arranged in various different sections and are also used for special exhibitions.
A particular highlight of the museum is an artificial coal mine beneath the museum with a network of galleries totalling almost 2.5 km. Here visitors can get a tangible idea of underground mining to the present day, including a high-tech longwall.

I am not sure if you will accept this but it is worth a shot. We found this cache container in Maryland. All the cachers who have signed the log agree that it is the largest ammo can they have ever seen and probably the largest cache container in general. It is called: Mission 7: Crab Creek (GCEF7). It is a Project A.P.E cache.
Wecome to Florida's Silver Springs, the largest artesian spring formation in the world. Check it out at: http://www.silversprings.com/.You might recognise the statues from the movie "moonraker". Thanks and God Bless!
This is the World's Largest Frying Pan -- or so it claims to be -- which is found in Rose Hill, North Carolina. This one is about 45-ft in diameter.
This is the worlds biggest "Schaufelradbagger" (shovel wheel excavator) located in Soft-coal-mining area "Garzweiler" near Grevenbroich, near Cologne, Northrhine-Westfalia, Germany. And there are several more "big ones" in the hole. It is strictly forbidden, to enter the area to get closer to the excavators.

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schaufelradbagger
This soft-coal mine is probably the biggest in the world (Chuquicamata is deeper but has not such expansion (4,5km x 3,5km, Garzweiler has 8,5km x 4,5km)).
This coal-mining let's vanish several towns from earth and the people must be re-settled.

Hilton Park, Wilmington, North Carolina...
So here is the official "World's Largest Living Christmas Tree". This is not a hoax! The lighting of this tree (and a visit from Santa) has been a city tradition for 77 years. Here's a link to the Special Events page on the Wilmington's website, where you can read all about it:
http://www.wilmingtonnc.gov/specialevents/tabid/203/Default.aspx
We're not so sure about the veracity of this claim, though. When we first moved to this town a few years ago, we were very excited to go and see this Christmas tree. When we arrived at the site, though, the head fraygirl couldn't help but wonder: "Have we moved to Loserville?". There's a gigantic tree there, all right, but it is NOT what one would consider a traditional Christmas tree. In fact, the tree is not even of the evergreen variety...instead, it is a whopping huge Live Oak covered with Christmas lights!!! That's just kind of weird!!
Now that we've been living here for nearly a decade, though, we are thankful for the World's Largest Living Christmas Tree, and for all of the deeper, Charlie Brown-esque thinking that it has inspired. The World's Largest Living Christmas Tree has bestowed upon us the gift of a paradigm shift. What *is* the true nature of a Christmas tree? Is a Christmas tree best defined by the tree or by the lights? Who are we to think that this isn't a Christmas tree, just because it's an OAK?!

Largest building in the world by volume
Boeing 747, 767 and 777 Manufacturing Site
Everett, Washington
The following information has been condensed from the Boeing Company website: "The Boeing 747, 767 and 777 airplanes are manufactured in Everett, Washington, which is located 30 miles north of Seattle, near Snohomish County's Paine Field. The Boeing Everett site also is home to the 787 program. Design of Boeing's all-new airplane is under way; production of the first 787 begins in Everett in 2006. Approximately 18,200 people on three shifts work at the Everett site.
The site's main assembly building, which the Guinness Book of World Records acknowledges as the largest building in the world by volume, has grown over the years to enclose 472 million cubic feet of space, with its footprint covering 98.3 acres. The original factory was completed in 1968. From its original size, it was expanded by more than 45 percent in 1980 to house the 767 assembly line, and another 50-percent enlargement was added in 1993 for 777 assembly. The site, too, has grown to 1,025 acres, including 215 acres of paved yards and parking, and 282 acres of building area. The Everett factory can accommodate two 777 production lines, and one each 747 and 767 production lines. Production rates vary with market activity, but have been as high as seven per month for the 747 and 777, and five per month for the 767. As the production line moves, the airframe gets closer to the doors through which the finished jetliner will roll out. Four of the six hangar doors are 81 feet high and 300 feet wide and two are 81 feet high and 350 feet wide.
Each day, parts and subassemblies come to the plant from all over the globe. More than a thousand suppliers ship components by truck, rail, air and ship from throughout the world and all 50 states. The largest parts are received at the Port of Everett, Wash., and then are loaded onto railcars that climb a 5.6 percent grade ˆ the steepest active standard gauge in the United States . Up to 15 railcars a day deliver parts to the Everett site."
The photo which shows a portion of the mural (on the front of the building's 81-foot-high hangar doors) was hastily taken while driving along Washington State Route 526. The GPSr shot was taken from the first public access road to the west of the building.
I'm glad I finally thought of a local "world's largest" something that I could log before the upcoming deadline! Thanks very much for maintaining this intriguing locationless cache opportunity for the past three years.

There larger model railroad layouts but this is the largest 3/16 scale.
I'm not sure what scale of model railroad this log is.
According to the "Crossroads Of America" website, this distinction was verified in 3/04.
The defining quote from the website: "That this museum holds a collection is an understatement. Housed in a former boarding house, Crossroads of America has the largest public 3/16 scale railroad layout in the world..."
Unfortunately, the display was closed for the season, the day I paid them a visit.

We recently visited friends in Pen Yann, NY. They took us to this photo where the original griddle used to make the World Record pancacke in 1987 is located. More information can be found searching for Birketts Mills. Here is part of information I found.
It seems Birkett Mills sponsored the creation of a world-record sized pancake back in 1987, and you can get a sense of just how big that world-record buckwheat pancake was if you compare the size of the griddle with the size of the truck positioned next to it. We asked the guy working the counter at the bric-a-brac shop across the street about the event, and he claimed that the amount of batter was so huge that it was mixed in a brand-new, never-been-used-before cement mixer, then poured into the hot griddle which was sitting over a massive bonfire.

Now I know some of you may think New Jersey or Manhattan has bigger ones, but believe me, the one in Archbald is not only huge, but the LARGEST {glacial} pothole in the world! (And it's not located on a turnpike!) The Archbald Pothole, in Archbald Pothole State Park, is home to two geocaches and an array of geological features.
Two pages ... the first one provides information but doesn't necessarily substantiate the claim...

Prague Nebraska is home to the World's Largest Kolach A kolach is a rich bread consisting of flour, water, yeast, sugar, butter, milk, eggs, and salt. After the dough rises, it is divided, braided, and shaped into a round. An egg glaze is applied and poppy seeds are often sprinkled on top. It was initially made in 1987 for the centennial celebration of the Czech community. The first recordholder weighed in at 2605 pounds. In 1992 the master chefs of the village set to making an even larger kolach. The final weight of this one was a whopping 5200 pounds. Once baked the kolach as divided and shared among all the residents.

THORNTON HOUGH VILLAGE, WIRRAL, UK
WORLDS BIGGEST GATHERING OF SCARECROWS (773)
JULY 2000
Every year since 1999 (except 2001 because of foot and mouth), the picturesque Wirral village of Thornton Hough has held its annual Scarecrow Festival. In 2000 it claimed a new record for the most scarecrows in one place at one time with 773 straw built characters on the village green.
The festival - which took weeks of preparation by local people attracted interest from television companies and the Guinness Book Of Records. The target to break the existing world record was 760 scarecrows - organisers say 773 scarecrows were built.
A parachutist dangling from a tree by the ropes of his parachute was one attraction in the area, while a scarecrow policeman with a dummy speed camera had an off effect - he forced many motorists travelling along the Lever Causeway in Storeton to slow down.
Details can be found at
http://archive.thisiswirral.co.uk/2000/07/13/12183.html
and the festivals own website at
http://www.scarecrowfestival.co.uk/about.htm.
The latter website claims the world record was 1999 whilst the former says 2000. Having visited both, I remember it wasn't the first of their festivals, and as the first was in 1999, I've gone for 2000

According to http://www.worldslargestthings.com/wllist.htm, this hot dog (actually the restaurant building itself) is the World's Largest Hot Dog. It's at Coney Island Dairyland in Aspen Park, Colorado along US 285. It's clearly visible from the highway. So in Mondo's backyard.
This is a picture of the largest carved bear I have ever seen. I can't document it - so I'm not counting this as a find.
We couldn't believe, that this one was not logged yet. It is the steepest wooden rollercoaster in the world and it is located in a park in Soltau, Germany.

The Montreal Olympic Stadium Tower (N45 33.451 W73 33.060). Found in Montreal city, Quebec, Canada.
An integral part of the Olympic Stadium, the Montréal Tower is the highest inclined tower in the world, with a 175-metre elevation and a 45-degree angle. The Tower of Pisa, by comparison, only has a 5-degree incline. The first 92 metres of the Montréal Tower are made of concrete, and the rest is made of steel.
You may ask yourself how a building as inclined as the Montréal Tower does not topple. The answer to this enigma lies in the relationship between masses. The upper part of the Tower represents a mass of 8,000 tons that is permanently and immutably joined to the concrete infrastructure.
This infrastructure reaches down a dozen metres below ground level and has a mass of 145,000 tons. It serves as the Tower's point of gravity at the heart of the enormous tripod.
The top 3 floors of the Tower are occupied by the Observatory, a cocktail room and a reception hall called the Salon Montréal. You enter the Observatory and Salon Montréal by a 2-level glass funicular that can accommodate 76 passengers at a time.
In high season, the funicular makes approximately 100 return trips each day. It glides up the back of the Tower on 266 metres of rail. The cables measure 600 metres, and the funicular travels more than 2 metres per second. The trip takes approximately 2 minutes. This funicular is the only one in the world that works on a curbed structure; a hydraulic system allows the cabin to remain horizontal at all times.
The Montréal Tower was opened to the public in November 1987. Since its inauguration, over 4 million people have come to enjoy the view from the Observatory-a panorama that stretches 80 kilometres in clear weather. It is given 3 stars (the highest rating) by the Michelin Guide.

There is currently no entry for ukulele, so I submit for your consideration the giant playable model displayed in October 2005 at the Ukulele Ceilidh in Lunenburg Nova Scotia, Canada. The mulilingual title of the festival is worthy of note in itself. For those not fluent in Gaelic, Ceilidh is pronounced "KAY-lee" and translates as a musical party. The claim to gobal supremacy for this 17 foot tall instrument is at http://www.ukulele.ca/giantuke.html although it must be admitted the claim is not substantiated by Guiness. Should another, bigger model provide bona fide credentials I will withdraw my post!

World's Largest Ball of Video Tape
This famous ball makes frequent appearances on the emmy award winning public television program "Rare Visions and Roadside Revelations".
It was quite a thrill to see that mondo ball of tape in person, not to mention meeting Randy Mason and Mike Murphy who star in the show (didn't get to meet Don the Camera Guy). I also met a member of their staff, Christy McCaig,
and Kelly Ludwig who snapped the pics.
We talked about geocaching for a bit, they speculated that many places featured on their series are probably geocaches (I think they're right!).
That ball is heavy, almost 70 lbs. now! But Randy Mason graciously offered to lug it out to the lobby for any geocacher passing through Kansas City who'd like to see it up close
Here is a link to Big Ball Lore:

Here a link to their very unique, funny, and educational show (which I think would be particularly interesting to Geocachers, who are always looking for the unique and unexpected).

The Oktoberfest in Munich/Germany is the biggest beer festival of the world.
In this year it is open from 17. September to 03. October.
In further times the Oktoberfest always was in Oktober, but since many years it starts in September and ends with the first weekend in October because the weather in October may be very cold in Munich.
We visited the Oktoberfest early in the morning, when only a few people were here and we could take a look at everything without being disturbed by people.
You see, there are many more things, not only beer halls at the Oktoberfest in Munich.

Mount Washington in New Hampshire isn't that high (6288FT) compared to other mountains but it has a distinction-it has recorded the highest wind speed on earth. On April 12, 1934, it recorded an official wind speed of 231 miles per hour. I worked for the Mount Washington Weather Observatory for 4 winters and saw winds of 145 mph at 34 degrees F below zero while I was up there. For those who don't consider the wind a physical entity, ask the survivors in New Orleans about wind. You can find the details at http://www.mountwashington.org/bigwind/ or on many other web sites as well. People still talk of "the big wind" with respect.
I found the world's largest fireworks warehouse in Blacksburg, SC while driving north on I-85. There are billboards as you approach it and there's a big sign on the front of the building.

World's Largest City Park. Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Fairmount Park was created by Benjamin Franklin. As a park, the city of philadelphia continued to expand this parcel until it engulfed every park chain inside the city. Picture taken in the Somerton section of the city. Fairmount Park
The northern end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway leads into Fairmount Park, the world's largest and biggest landscaped city park, with 8,700 acres of winding creeks, rustic trails, and green meadows, plus 100 miles of jogging, bike, and bridle paths. In addition, this park (tel. 215/685-0000) features more than a dozen historical and cultural attractions, including 29 of America's finest colonial mansions (most are open year-round, including weekends, and standard admission is $2.50), as well as gardens, boathouses, America's first zoo, a youth hostel, and a Japanese teahouse. Visitors can rent sailboats and canoes, play tennis and golf, swim, or hear free symphony concerts in the summer. See information on renting bikes and inline skates at Lloyd Hall (at the start of Boat House Row) for a couple of hours; they're cheap, and can get you in and out of the heart of the park quickly.
You can get here by taking bus no. 76 to the Museum of Art entrance, or no. 38 or 76 to the upper end. If you're driving, there are several entrances and exits off I-76; East and West River drives are local roads flanking the Schuylkill River.
The park is generally divided by the Schuylkill River into East and West Fairmount Park. Before beginning a tour of the mansions, stop by the Waterworks (tel. 215/236-5465). Philadelphia set the waterworks up here in 1812 to provide water for the city. They set aside a 5-acre space around the waterworks, which became a park in 1822.
The Greek Revival mill houses in back of the Art Museum and an ornamental post-Civil War pavilion connecting them are undergoing the end of a $23 million restoration. An upscale, year-round restaurant, open air market, summer stage, and new bike path will join the renovated houses in summer 2003. Also on the east bank, don't miss Boat House Row, home of the "Schuylkill Navy" and its member rowing clubs. Now you know where Thomas Eakins got the models for all those sculling scenes in the Art Museum. These gingerbread Tudors along the riverbank appear magical at night, with hundreds of tiny lights along their eaves.

According to the Guinness site at http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/default.htm, the largest library in the world is the United States Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The Library of Congress occupies a unique place in American civilization. Established as a legislative library in 1800, it grew into a national institution in the nineteenth century. Since World War II, it has become an international resource of unparalleled dimensions.
The diversity of the Library of Congress is startling. Simultaneously it serves as; a legislative library and the major research arm of the U.S. Congress; the copyright agency of the United States; a center for scholarship that collects research materials in many media and in most subjects from throughout the world in more that 450 languages; a public institution that is open to everyone over high school age and serves readers in twenty-two reading rooms; a government library that is heavily used by the executive branch and the judiciary; a national library for the blind and physically handicapped; an outstanding law library; one of the world's largest providers of bibliographic data and products; a center for the commissioning and performance of chamber music; the home of the nation's poet laureate; the sponsor of exhibitions and of musical, literary, and cultural programs that reach across the nation and the world; a research center for the preservation and conservation of library materials; and the world's largest repository of maps, atlases, printed and recorded music, motion pictures and television programs.
The Library of Congress occupies three massive structures on Capitol Hill, near the U.S. Capitol. The Jefferson Building, opened in 1897; is a grand monument to civilization, culture, and American achievement.
The Library of Congress was established as the fledgling legislature of the new Republic prepared to move from Philadelphia to the new capital city of Washington. On April 24, 1800, Pres. John Adams approved legislation that appropriated $5,000 to purchase "such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress." The first books, ordered from London, arrived in 1801 and were stored in the U.S. Capitol, the Library's first home. The collection consisted of 740 volumes and three maps.
The pictures below show the entrance tot he original Jefferson Buolding of the Library, and a view from the back side of the building (with SoccerFanatic and GPS) showing the dome.

A Bowl of strawberries is great. A BIG strawberry is too.
Located in Strawberry Point, Iowa is the worlds largest strawberry. It has been there for over 30 years. I grew up on a farm nearby.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was opened in 1936. It features the largest bore tunnel in the world, through Yerba Buena Island. It is 76' wide, 58' high and 1700' long. Imagine, a world's largest object that I can see just down the hall from my office. For more information, see the California Department of Transportation link:

In March 1999 The Guinness Book of World Records certified Hilo Hattie’s 400XL Aloha shirt as the "World’s Largest Aloha Shirt". Hilo Hattie’s first opened in 1963 on the Island of Kauai. The store in Festival Bay Mall opened on April 2, 2003. (GPS couldn’t lock coords. from inside mall, so coords. listed are from mall entrance by the movie theater.) This is the World's Largest Smoker and Grill. I was able to get the coordinates for this cache while the Smoker and Grill was in Springfield, Missouri at the Battlefield Mall during the Labor Day Weekend. I believe it was a fundraiser for the Convoy of Hope charity (which is based in Springfield and is currently very active in the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts). The wood fired grill can cook approximately 200 steaks or 1000 hotdogs simultaneously. It can slow smoke 2000 pounds of meat, and has a 20-foot hydraulic lid. More information can be found at: http://theultimatesmokerandgrill.com/index.htm. Thanks for the cache!!!
I was in Buffalo, N.Y. for my wife's family reunion and we stopped by to pick up a virtual cache on the Erie Canal when I noticed this sign and remembered this locationless cache. At one time Tonawanda, N.Y. was the biggest lumber port in the world. It is located just north of Buffalo where the Erie Canal runs into Lake Erie.
We have found the world's largest summer hotel. This hotel is the Grand Hotel which is located on Mackinac Island. Mackinac Island is located between the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Lower Michigan on the Straits of Mackinac. I have included pictures of the hotel, the history and a link: www.grandhotel.com. Once at the site you can click on the history link on the menu. The world's largest summer hotel also boasts the world's largest front porch!
This is a model of a Birdwing butterfly
The scientific name of the Birdwing butterfly is Troides magellanus
Only Taiwan and Philippine have Birdwing butterflies in the whole world
Perhaps there are 500 Birdwing butterflies in the whole world at present
I find it in the Taiwan National museum of natural science botanical garden
There are several wildlife restoration projects underway in Taiwan, including the Birdwing Butterfly

This is the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, which claims to be the world's largest covered bird park. It certainly is the largest I've seen! The park consists of 8.4 hectares of covered natural rain forest and jungle. There are also several aviaries inside the covered area for predatory and endangered species. The netting is held up by huge steel poles. The two photos show the sign that proclaims the "world's largest" status, and a view of the entrance to the park, which shows a small section of the netting. The bird park is part of Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens, which include the lake gardens themselves, orchid and hibiscus gardens, and a butterfly park.
The claim to fame is made quite definitely in the web site of the bird park: http://www.genting.com.my/en/leisure/travel/2002/klbirdpark.htm. Interestingly, other KL and Malaysian web sites use terms like: "Said to be the largest", and "one of the largest".
By the way: KL also claims to have the world's biggest flagpole, but the Guinness Book of Records says that that particular honour goes to Panmunjon, North Korea, near the border of South Korea. It is 160m (525ft) high. One thing they can lay claim to (for a while, at least) is the tallest building in the world: the Petronas Towers at KLCC.

This is the worlds biggest trout! It can be found in Adaminaby, NSW, Australia! It’s 10m tall, and is here, because this is the trout capital of Australia. The nearby lakes and rivers are well known for their beautiful trout. More info can be found at:

Le Cornu Furniture Store. The sign say it all. Just visit Adelaide, South Australia.
Their site has the following text.
A rapid era of growth began, with each expansion proving too small, so in 1967 Clarke Street was purchased from Adelaide City Council (the first public street to be sold by the Council since the Colony was founded!) and the North Adelaide store became, in 1968, the largest furniture store in Australia.
Within 2 years, demand again proved this site to be too small. The original 9-acre Chrysler car assembly plant at Keswick was then purchased, and converted into the worlds largest full-or-self-service furniture Warehouse and air-conditioned Showroom, complete with a Restaurant, a creche for child-minding with a unique sea of over 50,000 coloured plastic balls imported from Denmark, and 200 fully decorated room-size furniture displays.
