Cache has been missing now for 6 months, with no action from CO. On SH1 so sure more people are stopping here than logging their DNF's
This geocacher reported that this geocache should be archived. A community volunteer reviewer has been notified.
Maint check required thanks. No Cache in place now. Contact me if you need a hand as I drive past here once a month. Cheers, GC.
Nothing at all that fits the size or hint. Reecent roadworks have probably removed the cache. But a nice upgraded car park and interpretative signs.
The armco barrier has very recently been replaced, still cones in place to keep the work site safe, can see indentations where the poles for the old barrier used to be
That's a pretty cool rock. Good hint. Had to run in between cars which was quite a challenge as it was the Easter weekend traffic. Not quite what I'd call Super stealth mode but I got the job done. Tftc
Nice quick find, phone died before I could log it lol. Beautiful spot, have left a couple things behind
Busy road but manage to sneak a look between vehicles. Neat rock. I did not know this was here. TFTC.
Wish there was more info here describing the rock and its purpose. Was thankful for the explanation on the cache page. Left a smiley coin as a gift. Hope it will bring happiness
Found with Tommygun- Sorry for the late log- finally working through a list of found caches that I had misplaced
Was a good place to stop and feed the baby.
Thanks for the cache

I drove past here earlier this year and wondered if there was a cache. As I drove past today our youngest was unsettled so we picked this as a good stopping point.
Once out of the vehicle I checked my phone, once I found signal, and headed off to grab the cache. It was a fairly easy find between passing cars.
Thanks for bringing us to this interesting site!

I remember being taught this story at school, never realised this was the rock! Its like stumbling over a piece of heritage. Thanks for the stop. Waited for times between the constant car traffic to nab the cache and then replace it.
#13792. An interesting spot like this is well worth a cache. We overshot the car park (heading south) but found the parking was reasonable just pass the rock. TFTC.
Day 11 of our North Is trip, and today we are travelling from Takapuna to Taupo. As we didn't leave Auckland until after 1pm, we limited our caching en route.
This looked like a simple drive by and it proved to be so. An interesting rock indeed, thank you for the informative cache page write up. TFTC.

I grew up travelling past here often as a child. Now my own children have just learnt about Hatupatu so I thought we'd stop in on our way past as we headed to the Kaimanawa's to camp on this awfully wet weekend. Thanks for the cache
Day 8 of our Mega Roadtrip. A nice quick find here. We also got quite a few KanTabs for KidneyKids from the overflowing rubbish bin and a couple of friendly honks from (geocachers?) Thanks for the smilie
Found on the trip home from the mega in Turangi.
Left a small token at the rock.

This rock has long been a landmark and stopping point on journeys to Turangi, going back to our own childhoods. Called in once again this afternoon to admire the rock and find the cache. Thanks.
a quick stop and find on another day of caching heading for the mega, aboslutely loved this area, tftc
On my way to the turangi mega - aiming for 50 caches today. This was find nr 14, a nice easy one. Thanks for placing it
Found today on our way to the Mega Event at Turangi . . . . . overshot the GZ so did a u-turn and came back and met a couple of locals here paying their respects, nice to learn a bit of local knowledge of this place. Cache found quickly and off we go to the MEGA . . . . . TFTC
On our way to the Mega in Turangi.
Getting closer to Taupo and just had to stop to get this cache as it was on our side of the road.
Mrs NZT parked while Mr NZT jumped out and made the quick find signing the log while sitting on the armco.
Returned just as a third car pulled up.
Interesting to note that there were already 3 caches who had signed the log today so am guessing these are also heading for the Mega.

On my way home to Auckland from Taupo, and even though the cache was on the opposite side of the road, there was no traffic so u-turned into the pull off area. Cache soon signed after that.
I have not been out and about for some time to it was a drive around rural Waikato to get some caches

Taking a drive down around the mountain for some fresh air, stopped for some caches along the way.
This is the first time in a long time I was driving in the correct direction and could get into the parking area safely. Nice quick find, now getting out without losing my car in a puddle. TFTC

Stopped here on the way south to Wellington today. A quick find - not the first cache I have found here. Signed log, TFTC
Thanks! I always note this sign as I drive past, and wondered what it was all about. When I spotted that there was a cache here (and finally the story behind the spot), I insisted on stopping for a look on this drive by.
Quick stop on the way to taupo from hamilton for a short holiday. Thanks for the cache
Hatu Patu - we always stop here, so it was a bonus to get a cache. Not the most safest one for Master 4, I was holding on for dear life! - Mama Drylie
Not the most pleasant rest stop very muddy and rubbish everywhere .... looks like someone has thrown their whole wardrobe here as clothes all over the place which is a shame. Quick find of cache and very cool rock. Day one of a 4 day road trip from Hawkes Bay to Auckland and back to collect as many caches as we can. Log signed as b&p.Tftc
#2476. We have been staying with family in Rotorua for the past few days. Now its time to head back home and taking a few byways around the back of Lake Taupo to pick up a few of the caches that are widely spread out in this area. The family have allowed me just ten cache finds today. So with tight rations I have had to target caches that assist with some challenges I am working on. I have stopped at this interesting rock several times previously. The cache was a nice quick find. Signed the dry logbook and returned the cache as found. Thanks for hiding it here.
(1973) Down South with Skibow1 for a running event in Taupo. So we had a few caches line up to collect along the way. Love the story about this rock. TFTC
Stopped for this one on the way down to Taupo for the weekend. Great spot, TFTC
Last time we were in New Zealand and spend our holiday on the Northern Island – that was fantastic!
We landed in Wellington and from this great town we went through the island – we were near Mt. Taranaki, in the Tongariro Nationalpark, on Lake Taupo, in two Thermal Areas, in Rotorua, on Coromandel Peninsula, on the Bay of Islands, on the Ninety Mile Beach, in the Sand Dunes, on Cape Reinga and in Auckland.
All the time we visited there the main attractions – but we wanted to do our hobby (geocaching), too.
So we looked for the boxes next to the highways and on all the wonderful places of this very nice Island.
Here we could found the box very well, we say thanks to the owner and thanks for the cache.

A nice quick find today, with noone else around. Cheers.
Off to Hamilton today. Ice on the car in Rotorua, Brrr.
Thanks to the CO's for the hides. Cheers.

Hubby made a quick find as a car pulled up and a bunch of kids jumped out asking why this rock was so special, thanks to the awesome page write up u was able to explain, found 10c on the ground so added that. Tftc
Had to drive further up the road a pull a u-ey as had a cop right behind me. Quick find once at GZ. TFTC
I notice that treasure hunting Tim has commented "quick find" here. Let me correct him. We stopped here on our way home to hawkes bay after a weekend in Auckland. It was late at night, around half past nine ish. Kids were asleep, so Tim and I got out to search. He went straight to a nearby object and started ducking and diving as he searched, 100% certain that he was in the right spot. I followed my c:geo map and moved about 20m away to quickly make the find. Haha, quick find by wifey here tonight, Tftc
Very pleased to have found this location, and to learn more about Maori legends. I'm visiting from UK, and am really enjoying learning more about NZ through geocaching taking me to places I'd never have known about. Cache in neat hiding place, and in good order.
Thanks for the hint.....great cache, and later on saw exactly this rock illustrated in the Rororua Museum as our guide explained the history!

Nice easy find. Not magnetic anymore. 3.2 harriet. Nice geocaching day with dad
A most interesting spot here of quite some significance, plus I suspect one that supports quite a large rat population! A quick find in passing.

100th find on way to Hamilton.....travelling with my friend who I found my 1st geocache with. Thanks for the find
Been meaning to go for this one for awhile but there's always been others here. With the rain today I have it to myself. Nice to achieve this find finally. With all the toys and other offerings I am reminded that a whole family in a van was killed here some years ago when the van ran into this rock and I'm wondering if the anniversary of said accident was recent. TFTC
We stopped here on our road trip down south, paid our respects and asked for safe passage. Nice to see so many other people stopping and tooting. Nice easy to find cache. Tftc.
I visited Hatupatu's Rock when I was a child as my relations lived in Atiamuri at one point in their lives. The story has always stuck with me & now it was my turn to pass onto my children the story of Hatupatu.
We knew there was a cache there but went in blind trying to find it as the cell coverage was pretty limited & we were caching on the fly. We got a general area & Mr Swiss made the find.
This is the story I read out to my children. http://teaohou.natlib.govt.nz/journals/teaohou/issue/Mao53TeA/c16.html

Sure we have done a cache here before so this must be a newer one than the last time we travelled this way. Nice and straight forward, TFTC
Day one of road trip from Tokomaru to Pakaraka, Northland, with two of my kiddos. Great first cache of the day! Left a gift for Hatu Patu. Thanks for the cache (PS I think I signed the logbook smashpalace instead of Jean Jeanie. I can't remember lol)
