Target # 39 - Life Imitates Art Imitates Life
This is a famous statue of the white lady in Banbury, England they is a nursery rhyme that goes with statue. It is:-
Ride – a cock – horse to Banbury Cross,
To see a fine lady on a white house.
With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes
She shall have music wherever she goes.
She is giving KiwiGary some flowers. It’s a great bit of art and would recommend it to anyone in the area.
Thanks for doing this cache and Happy new year, shame to see it going

Target #50 - Goodbye, Joefrog!
Locationless Caching has been a major part of our enjoyment of geocaching. Some of the locationless caches we have found have been opportunistic, but most of them have been the result of dedicated research on the Internet, at public libraries, by making phone calls, through email inquiries, and through personal connections with friends. We started caching after the moratorium on new locationless caches was established, so the only source of new caching targets that we have ever known has been due to "Dash for Cache!" Without this cache, locationless caching would not have been anywhere near as exciting.
We have been fortunate to complete 20 "Dash for Cache" targets. We have traveled to three different states to make these finds and used all of the research approaches mentioned above.
Picking a single favorite just isn't possible, although our logs for targets #16 (Old Post Office Buildings), #18 (Large 3-D Sculpture), #21 (Celebrate Independence), #23 (Space Race: To The Moon), #39 (Life Imitates Art Imitates Life), #42 (Did He Do It?), and #45 (Nobel Prize Winners) have each been particularly memorable in their own way. Plus, our two FTFs, #46 (Never Again) and #48 (Freemasons Among Us!) are not to be forgotten, either!
We will definitely miss locationless caching. It's probably not reasonable to think that locationless caches will ever return to geocaching.com, but we can hope, can't we?
We have assembled a collage of our "Dash for Cache Targets" to help us remember the fun we've had with this locationless cache -- none of the others can even compare to it.
Joefrog, thanks for the dash!

McCarthy's Clock, Woonsocket RI
A local department store on Main Street moved to a strip mall in the outskirts of town in the 1960s, by 1990 it had to close its doors with the big box chains coming into the area. The old clock was located and a radio show raised the funds to restore and reset it at the corner of Main Street and Court Street in a pocket park on the site of the older store.

This is the clock on Exmouth seafront, Southwest UK. It marks the area of an old fort and is nowadays well-known in the town as being the meeting place for the Christmas day dip (yes we are all mad down here!).
Thanks,

Kelly's Real Deals Antique Shop is built and painted to look like a wild west outpost. It is located on Lee Hwy in Botetourt County Virginia. I tried to get good pictures of the "trompe l'oeil" paintings on the building. [Trompe l'oeil (pronounced "trump loy"), French for "fool or deceive the eye", describes a highly realistic painting style imitating natural appearances so convincingly that viewers might momentarily wonder if the objects depicted are real.]

This Holocaust memorial plaque is in Porstmouth in Hamphire, England .
It is placed in front of a tree planted on Holocaust Memorial Day 27th January 2002.
The tree and plaque are near the entrance to the Porstmouth D Day Museum .
Portsmouth D-Day Museum housed a special exhibition on Sunday 30 January this year to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
A series of posters told the story of the Holocaust and the message of Holocaust Memorial Day joined the existing exhibits for the day.
There was also a small display of documents telling the story of Samuel Leyton, who lived in Germany before the Second World War, but was put in a concentration camp by the Nazis for being Jewish. He was released in 1939, and came to the UK where he joined the British Army and served throughout the Second World War, including landing in Normandy shortly after D-Day. After the war he lived and worked in the Portsmouth area.
Entry to the D-Day Museum was free for the day, to encourage as many people as possible to learn more about and contemplate Holocaust Memorial Day, the Holocaust and the wider events of the Second World War.

We found this Holocaust Memorial Rock Garden on the grounds of the Civic Centre in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England. The memorial was dedicated on Holocaust Memorial Day 2004, (27 January), the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz death camp in Poland.
Rabbi Mendel Lew dedicated the garden, created by Southend Council, to the millions murdered by the Nazis. The event took place on Holocaust Memorial Day, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz death camp in Poland. Rabbi Lew said: "The garden has a variety of plants and flowers which grow together in harmony. This is a model for the society we would like to live in."

Target # 45 - Very Nobel of You!
This is the grave of Willy Brandt, Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971.
The dates - not engraved on the stone - are as follows: born 18 Dec 1913 in Lübeck, died 08 Oct 1992 in Berlin. The grave is on the Waldfriedhof Zehlendorf in Berlin.
Why was he awarded the prize?
During his time as Foreign secretary from 1966 and as German Chancellor from 1969 he worked for:
1) Deepening and Enlarging the European Community
2) the Non-Violence Agreement with the Soviet Union
3) Normalization of the relations to Poland
Unforgotten is his kneeling by the Jewish memorial in the former ghetto of Warsaw in 1970.
If you are interested in further details read the Nobel Peace Prize Presentation Speech: http://nobelprize.org/peace/laureates/1971/press.html
Willy Brandt was Mayor of Berlin when the Berlin wall was built, he stood by John F. Kennedy when he spoke his famous word: "Ich bin ein Berliner." on the place that now carries his name.
In his late life he was President of the Socialist International for 16 years and he was working for changes in the world's attitude towards the Third World.
He was the greatest German statesman after WW II if not of the whole 20th century.
His grave lies back to back to Ernst Reuter's, who was Mayor of Berlin during the Berlin Blockade in 1948-49.
Thank you for this interesting target.
Best regards from Berlin,
Wolfgang

Arlington National Cemetery
We braved the cold this AM to locate this grave and were successful, however, the photos are stuck in the camera due to a software upgrade. Hope to have this resolved by this evening at which time we will change this note to a find.
American general of the army, chief of staff, secretary of state, secretary of defense, president of the American Red Cross, UN diplomat. Marshall is best known as the originator of the Marshall Plan, an unprecedented program of economic and military aid to foreign nations. His plan gave impetus to the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and to the European Common Market. In 1953, George C. Marshall received the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership in efforts to rebuild Europe following WWII and promote peace in the world. He is the only soldier to ever have received this prestigious award.

Target #45, Very Nobel of You!, has been released!
Target # 45 - Very Nobel of You! On December 10, 1901, the first Nobel prizes were awarded in Stockholm, Sweden. The ceremony came on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite and other high explosives. In his will, Nobel directed that the bulk of his vast fortune be placed in a fund in which the interest would be "annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind." Although Nobel offered no public reason for his creation of the prizes, it is widely believed that he did so out of moral regret over the increasingly lethal uses of his inventions in war.
For this target, you must find the grave of a recipient of the Nobel Prize -- ANY of the Nobel prizes. The photo MUST clearly show the name and dates of the person, and your log must contain information of WHY that person won the prize. As always -- TWO photos are required (What is so hard about that??), and one photo must contain your GPS! DUE TO TIME RESTRAINTS ON THIS CACHE, logs not meeting requirements will be deleted without notice, as will attempts at abusing the target's wording trying to find a loophole. If you have any doubt about the find, ASK! AT LEAST TWO PHOTOS ARE REQUIRED, AS ALWAYS. One photo must include your GPS.
Expires December 23, 2005.

This is the cornerstone of Methodist Hospital in Indiana. The orignal hospital cornerstone is dated 1905 and completed in 1908. This cornerstone represents the first addition that commenced five years later in 1913.
The hospital has been expanded many times over the years and is now part of Clarian Health System that includes Indiana Univeristy Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children.
Also, I worked there from 1977 to 1986 and have fond memories of those good times.
Thanks JoeFrog

At the corner of 15th Street and Main Street in Richmond, Virginia, there is a mural of Princess Diana. I believe it was placed there sortly after she died. The building that the mural is on used to be a restaurant, but now it is a gentlemen's club. Poor Diana, if she only knew!

This cornerstone is at Villard Hall on the University of Oregon campus. Villard Hall was the second building built at the U of O. Its style was Second Empire and it was designed to look similar to the New Louvre in Paris. http://libweb.uoregon.edu/guides/architecture/oregon/villard.html
Also featured is a very old (for the West Coast) benchmark and a plaque showing the buildings historic status.

Target #43--The Cornerstone
Library of Congress
Washington, DC
This target gave us absolute fits and was by far the hardest D4C target for us to date, so it definitely earns it's place as our #1300 milestone (pun intended).
It all started innocently enough. When the target was announced, we immediately thought of the George Washington Mason Memorial in Alexandria, VA. We were enroute to the memorial last Saturday when our caching partner called. The long and short of it is that we spent the day working on our final Coin Quest target and ran out of time to get to the memorial, got home to find SoccerFanatics had beat us to it (fair and sqare). They logged it while we were questing, so even if we had made the stop in the AM, we wouldn't have had it logged before them--no hard feelings.
More research ensued including a trip to Old Town Manassas where we found FIVE cornerstones! Unfortunately, four were on churches and the fifth one at the old Post Office was dated 1931--six years too young.
More research took us to downtown DC. The Smithsonian castle has a cornerstone, but it is very hard to read and the positioning of the stone leads us to believe it may be more of a monument than a true cornerstone. The cornerstone at the Washington monument is buried deep inside the monument and is inaccessible. The location of the original cornerstone at the Capitol is unknown--hard to believe, but true! The US Botanical Garden has a beautiful cornerstone, easily accessed and very legible... dated 1931 again.
After a good AM's walk, we finally located the Library of Congress cornerstone on the northeast corner of the buiding after being directed to the southeast corner. As per the photograph, the cornerstone was laid August 28, 1890. Photographs of the building were difficult due to construction causing us to be hemmed in by fences. If we had backed up any more we would have been outside the 8' tall sheetmetal fence and you would have had a lovely picture of the construction company's logo. Hence, the best we could do was a sideview of the Library looking west toward the Capitol. As the Library is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, we have included a photo from a website, which we believe to have been taken from the Capitol.

Calgary, Alberta - The Famous Five
I was in the area looking for a cache that is about 30 meters from these women. I had known about these statues for a long time and hadn't bother logging them because I didn't think that they'd still be available. However, after some checking I realized that they were still up for grabs, YO!
The Famous five, led by Emily Murphy, worked for 12 years to get women legally declared "persons" - these statues honor their efforts.

Good Shepherd Center, 1906
4649 Sunnyside Avenue North, Seattle, Washington
An Official City of Seattle Landmark
The Good Shepard Center is an example of the Italianate style embellished with Corinthian capitals and elaborate stone work.
The following information is from the Historic Seattle website (historicseattle.org):
"After providing over 60 years of service to young women seeking shelter, education, and training, declining numbers of residents forced the Home of the Good Shepherd to close in 1973. After the Wallingford community defeated a proposal to turn the 11-acre site into a shopping center, the City of Seattle bought the property in 1975 and then transferred the buildings to Historic Seattle for use as a multi-purpose community center. The project is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The property is currently owned and operated by Historic Seattle and the center currently houses nonprofit organizations and schools including the Meridian School, Neo Art School, the Wallingford Senior Center, the Wallingford Community Council, and Seattle Tilth."

For years Laguna Beach had an official welcoming committee-a committee of one, that is. "The Greeter" as he was affectionately known around these parts, was a old gentleman by the name of Eiler Larsen, a Dane with hair below his shoulders and a great, gray beard. He usually stood around the corner of Forest Ave and PCH, waving to everyone as they zipped past along the highway. Eventually, the city council proclaimed Larsen as the Official Greeter. He is gone, but not forgotten, as he is now immortalized by this statue. TFTC.

Target #39 was found in Credit Island Park in Davenport, Iowa. Located next to the Mississippi River were found several statues. the result of what we found makes things more complicated then this cache is intended to be.
MotherGoose posed next to the statue and I took the picture. These statues were 3 dimensional art forms that represented the charicters in the painting, "A Sunday on La Grande Jutte." by George Seurat, painted in 1884.
We thus had:

The statue is located on a roundabout in Las Chafiras, in the south of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Some of the women in the rural area, where we live on the island, still today carry their purchases in this way.
Thanks for the nice cache and

Geocache found on Saturday, the 12th of November 2005. You can find this bronze man looking at the ruins of the old church of "Santa MarÃa La Real de La Almudena", placed in the city of Madrid, Spain. Unfortunatelly I forgot to take a shot with me posing beside the statue, so, please, cache owner, if you consider this as a must, contact to me and I will come back there to take the shot ASAP. Best Regards / Juande.

I had no umbrella with me, so I held up my GPSr the way the man his umbrella holds.
Thanks,

This Monument is located in Mainz, the capitol of Rhineland-Palatinate / Germany. It shows a typical "Meenzer" - an archetype of a Mainzer wine-drinker - with a "red nose" and always a smile in his face - I think Inge matches.
Thank you for the chance to show you this part of our home country and so long

With this one, we couldn't find the sotne we really wanted, so figured this one will do.
If you notice, the sign said he did it, and the finger is pointing up at Racer. Of course, there was a strange odor eminating. Could have been a backed up sewer...

Thank you Joefrog for the FUN of the hunt. I was going to try for a statue of a man in a business suit sitting , well leaning on his looking in to his open briefcase on a wide 3-4 step entrance to a building (on maim Street I think) a block from the Galleria Mall in White Plains. I just had not gotten there yet, nor did I have any one w/ me to take pix.
Then my GF I stumbled on to first Hans Christian Anderson last Sunday, she said pose w/him & I'll take pix of you for the geocache. Latter when we stumbled on the Garment Worker she said GO pose & I'll grab a couple of pix for fun. I took GPS reading NOT so much for "Dash for the Cache", but maybe using it for my own virtual cache.
As I walked farther South on 7th (Fashion) Ave. I saw plaques (like the stars on Hollywood Blvd.) on the side walk (between 39th & 38th streets). The idea to have people find the Garment Worker (maybe w/ OUT telling who or what the "object was" then as a more proof they were there a) get a pic w/ the statue (but NOT post it )or b) E-mail me the names (& some other info) of 2 or 3 people on the plaques on the sidewalk.
I suppose I could still do so, as I wonder how may will see MY log of traget #39. For sure by say Jan I doubt an one will see it then.
When I got the e-mail last night (4 Nov. 2005) saying Hans Christian Anderson had already been clained I was VREY happy I had taken a GPS waypoint while @ the Garment Worker.

This bronze statue of a little girl drinking from a fountain is part of a series of statues and monuments of the Asheville Urban Trail which depicts the history and growth of the City of Asheville, NC. Visitors to Asheville can take the entire self-walking tour or choose to engage in the guided tour offered each Saturday from spring through autumn. Very cool "landmark" near a fireworks store on route 23 just over the Ohio border. Majorly huge Uncle Sam that faces the highway. The only way to get both of us in the pic was to go from the lower level. Looks like Sam isn't being so nice, but Funky's holding a GPS.

I was in Central Park last Sun. (30 Oct.) & well had claimed the statue of Hans Christian Anderson in Central Park.
When I checked my e-mail (Fri. evening 4 Nov.) I had one from Joefrog saying that statue had already been claimed. A second e-mail said the log had been deleted (Archived ??)
I had taken pix & a GPS point later Sun. evening while walking down 7th Ave. (Fashion Ave.).. ONE is NOT bad & the other was way to dark.
Since my first TRY @ this Cacahe is not valid LOL, Tonight I did a little research on the Garment Worker Statue.
Here I will post it w/ ONE pic of me posing interactively w/ it & ONE I found doing my background research....
I should be in NYC again, IF not this Sun then certainly by or around Thanksgiving & I will take more pix of The Garment Worker Statue (in daylight) & add then as soon as I get them
MarkSun (I editin this on 11/5/o5 to correct the waypoint. IT IS N40 I had accidentally put N45)

I remember exactly where I was when that verdict was read... unbelievable then and still shocking now.
Nazgul and I were out hiking today in search of a Team Alamo $10,000 cache but I only ended up with 2 bucks and a shot knee after a lot of vertical. So we figured on the way home we'd stop and do this one for some fun. This is my 125th LC find... kinda cool. I did find a fitting gravestone in this cemetery. Thanks for the fun.

Instead of trying for a name connection like several others, we chose the grave of a man executed for his crimes, which would have been a fitting end for our dear Mr. Simpson.
This graveyard is the Catholic Graveyard in Old Town State Historical Park, located where San Diego was founded and which preserves many of the City's original buildings. Oddly, the marker is in the cemetary but the body itself was buried outside the wall. It's most likely that the local priest wouldn't allow a convicted murderer to be buried on holy ground.
The second grave caught or eye on the way out and isn't really part of the find but we thought it was interesting.
We have two signs because we teamed up on this and both wanted a say. Joefrog, thanks for this target.

#983: Okay, Joefrog, I'm taking your advice. I've just spent the last month preparing for the Pocono Shotgun Start Event which was today. Needless to say, I haven't done many caches lately. Now I'm logging caches that are overdue, but this one has your approval. This carosel may be found at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=291d4416-2ad8-4040-9bdf-ec0caedbe386 where there is some great history on it. It's a real beauty. When I got to it, it was closed for the season.
