The recent prolonged heavy rain locally and flooding in the Hawkesbury River has restricted access to Umina Point, with some minor landslips and masses of flotsum and jetsum along the rock shelf. That and the slime growth on much of the rock has made it too dangerous to access this location.
After further deliberation, I've decided it's best to archive this cache now. Ever since the floods a year ago, the water in the potholes has been cloudy, making observation of the erosion process difficult, and now with the problematic access it's unlikely this EC will become viable again in the foreseeable future.
Thanks to all those who braved the tides, waves and sometimes slippery rocks to log it.

Caching around Gosford and Woy Woy today, weather is perfect and a great day was had. Pretty warm on the rock platform today. Could get within about two Meyers, but didn't catch the most ideal tide.

Luckily I had an EarthCache in my LGA for International EarthCache Day. Had a great time around the rocks with GeoJess who aspires to be a Geologist when she grows up. We had a great time exploring the area. Jess has awarded another FP.

This one wasn’t on the list of caches to have a crack at today but while completing a waypoint nearby I gave it a shot. I gathered the information in between waves and have sent my answers to the cache owner via the message centre. Nice Little Rock shelf.
Thanks barefootjeff for the cache.

What a beautiful walk and a fascinating EC. Answers submitted although the water was really cloudy today.

3rd time lucky!!
The first time here we walked on the beach, around the rocks on the higher side. Arriving at GZ even though the tide was supposedly "low" the swell was massive and it was too dangerous to attempt to get anywhere near the potholes. We chose to climb up to the footpath above us for the walk back to the car after seeing quite a few people jogging and walking past. Never knew this pathway was here!
2nd attempt again at low tide and perfect weather after the recent flooding the Central Coast had experienced. This time we walked up the road to drop down from the pathway onto the rocks near GZ. Oh no!! Looking down the sea was brown! There was no way we could see inside the potholes today! We walked back along the beach to the car, observing some of the interesting things the storms had washed upon the beach.
3rd and successful attempt we walked along the beach staying on the low side of the rocks. Perfect tide and weather. We got up real close and peered into the potholes. Gathering our answers we emailed the CO and finally had the green light to go ahead and claim our smilie.

I've known about this cache for years, but have paid attention to the 'go at low tide' warnings, and have checked the tides once or twice to see if the timing was good. Never been down here for a peek thought until coming here for the nearby lab cache. Oh - and there is a Geocaching Australia trig here too - https://geocaching.com.au/cache/tp6912 - but I forget to get a photo so will log a GCA find next time.
But yeah today when I went it was approx. 'mid-tide' and rising, with a decent sea swell that was throwing water right over the potholes I could see. I had already slipped and hurt myself on the way here, and it just wasn't worth the risk to get closer today. I think you really want to have a 'king' low tide and small swell to safely get close, and I was thinking I'll bring my kayak PFD. Weirdly just today (1 April PM as I type) I was cleaning up and found a fishing PFD that must have come from my Dad. OK I'll wear that next time in his honour (and for my safety).
No cache 'find' here today, but an interesting place with awesome views, just tread careful and be careful folks!! Cheers

TFTC Thank you for hiding this cache. You have shown us a new place and have helped make geocaching an enjoyable activity. We were impressed with this location and the rock formations
Found with EH after completing the nearby AL bonus. What a great spot by the bay with amazing views of Lion Island and Pittwater. A few muggles walking, fishing and sunbaking, but we gathered the details for each question easily enough. Though the waves crashing in now and then had us carefully watching out. Some crabs acted as cache guardians near the potholes. Some top view from GZ. Answers submitted by EH on behalf of both of us. TFTEC
Spent an enjoyable day out caching on the Central Coast with Brewmaker. This Earthcache was one of the highlights. A favourite point from me. TFTEC barefootjeff

As we were staying a couple of days at Umina Beach, Haveanez and our crew headed down the coast on this beautiful day to find a few caches. We were keen on making a visit to this one, and while the tide was pretty low (gradually rising though), we managed to have a very nice walk out along the rocks to GZ, where the kids found all sorts of marine life and fossils along the way.
Once we were at GZ and saw what we needed to look at more closely, we soon realised the tide wasn’t as low as we needed it to be. With the waves crashing in over the rocks, it made for a very precarious situation to be in, dashing in and out to try and get a good look into the required holes. We made our observations as best we could, and got the green light from the CO to log.
A very cool spot indeed which I’m sure we will revisit next time we are here, and with hopefully a lower tide as well.

Thanks for this great cache.
The coords for parking helped as I snaked my way to gz.
This was a cool feature and it's interesting how coastal trips make you so aware of the tides.
Wish I could see one of these being made in stop motion a-la an Attenborough documentary.

Found this one on a glorious winter day sunshine and clear skies.
My recent trip to the ozgeomuster mega event has stimulated my interest in geocaching again.
The waters were very clear today so finding the answers was easy! I love looking in rock pools
Found plenty of crabs, and a starfish or two. Many snails. And a few fish.
Thanks for the opportunity to learn a little more about these potholes.

In the area from Sydney for a geocaching Good Friday. Enjoyed our walk up to and out here. It was mid tide when we arrived so we couldn’t safely get to the edge of the potholes. But we were able to collect the required information from not too far away and further up the track. Have sent responses to CO. Interesting we saw another pothole later in the day in an unexpected place. Up on a rock on the way to the Mount Ettalong Lookout! Those would be VERY old! Thanks for the geology lesson, barefootjeff. TFTEC Cheers.... Gaztek
TFTC we had fun exploring the rocks on way to the cache. Perfect morning for a walk.
Dad and I found this while we were camping at the Ocean Beach... we didn't find any blue ringed octopuses!

We were camping with a group of muggle friends across the creek at the NRMA park, in between swims and trick or treating Samuel and I managed to sneak off across the beach and onto the rock shelf. We explored a lot of little rock pools on our way, mainly as Samuel wanted to see a blue-ringed octopus.... Once we got to GZ the sea conditions, even at low tide, meant we couldn't linger at the pools edges for long. It's easy to see this spot being quite treacherous at times. We took some photos, including our little salute to the CO, although we didn't make the walk in bare feet, we could have, even boot-philes like us!

Justjessie and i walked out here with the water just washing over the holes, still managed to get the info and send to CO. Thanks for bringing us out here.
A beaut place to be on this sunny, Autumn morning. MummyPenny brought the dog and I up for a bit of R&R which included a walk out to this point. Even though we timed our visit for low tide, there were sets of 2 or 3 larger waves pounding GZ every so often so I finished up with sodden shoes, socks and jeans, all in a good cause though.
The waves washing over the potholes obscured some of the detail but it seems that we got enough to understand what's happening. A couple of smaller, younger potholes back nearer to the beach give clues too.
Thanks for the exercise of mind and body BFJ and I appreciated the quick confirmation too.

We were camped at the nearby caravan park on our way home after a few days hiking in the snowy mountains.
Late in the afternoon we took a walk around the headland to the potholes. Tide was fairly low so we were able to get down to the potholes and have a good look around.
Still had to be careful not to get splashed as there was the odd wave coming through that would catch the unsuspecting geocacher.
We gathered our information and continued our walk before grabbing another traditional on the way back to our campsite.

Needing a non-traditional for the "Tomorrow will be different challenge", I turned my sights towards the central coast and spotted a couple of earth caches that have been on my todo list. Quickly checking tide times last night, I was in for an early start given the 6:14am low. I made it there by 7am only to see a fisherman setup exactly at GZ. Oh well, I wasn't driving all this way for nothing so I said g'day and had a quick chat. He wasn't local and also wasn't having much luck with the fish. Best of all, he didn't seem to mind me poking around nearby. I took a few pics before checking out the nearby trig (which I've had reason to visit previously). A very beautiful part of the world! Next - off to Patonga for some unfinished business in a dark corner as well as the HH#6 earth cache.

We all came out to this one today for our 600th find! We got here a bit after low tide but it was still low enough to complete the tasks and examine the potholes. The place was busy with two fishing muggles at GZ and a number of other folk with boards n stuff. Not surprising as this is a pretty interesting area. Kids enjoyed exploring the rocks. Afterwards we went and celebrated our milestone with ice creams at the legendary Umina Point Cafe. TFTEC, BFJ!

Time for us novos to do a little bit of cache clean up. We've been busy knocking off grid spots in 2017 and then a few caching trips late in the year kept us busy also. This has left us with a number of local caches on our to-do list which we've yet to get to. We've been saving Umina's Potholes for a lovely summer day like this ...only we have arrived too late as GZ is totally submerged lol! Ooops. We had planned to get here by mid-tide at least but due to no fault of the CO, we got a bit mixed up with the parking and the trail in and long story short we lost about 45 mins. But it's totally ok 'cause we have it sussed now and will deffo be back here - awesome spot!

Went for a look today as the swell had dropped a bit and the tide was at a convenient time to nip away from the IRB racing up the beach. Pictures taken and questions answered. Take the time to look at the cliffs above as they are as awesome as the potholes.

Happy International EarthCache day!
1st of 3 finds - Pearl Beach, Umina Beach, Mooney Mooney.
Some time early in September, I saw on one of the FB groups that International EC day was coming and I started thinking about what my options might be. A couple of newer ones popped up closer to home in September ("Stony Range Earthcache" and "One Tree Hill") but I chose to find them not long after they were published. I also grabbed the "Bents Basin Earthcache" a few weeks ago and "Den Fenella Track" just on Friday, at the end of a week's holiday up in the Bluies.
So I've only been left with this one inside my home 30km, although the drive around to it via the M1 & Woy Woy Rd is quite a bit longer, but worth it on a fine morning like today. I checked the (Ettalong) tide chart last night and it was meant to be low (0.7m) at 8:43. Unfortunately, I saw after parking and walking around that the swell was massive in spite of the low tide.
And so, I was only able to get to within about 10m of GZ and the bigger potholes. Someone sitting in the rocks above warned me of the big waves and then asked if I was earth caching. Turned out to be **lance91** - nice to meet you! We then worked through the questions as well as we could, given how difficult it was not being able to get closer.
We walked back; I snapped some pictures of some smaller, safer potholes. I then wanted to get "Kiddies corner cross the road climb" seeing as I was already parked at the best place. L91 had already found that one, but came with me for a look.
My answers have since been okayed by the CO today considering how hard this was in the rough swell. TFTEC!

International Earthcache day!
Checked tide chart and noticed low tide would be 8am, so set off a bit beforehand. Once I was on the beach the conditions were perfect. After Rockhopping around to the point had a chat to some fishermen nearby the EC and then noticed the parts needed for EC were under constant barrage from waves.
I sat 15-20 m away from GZ and relaxed a bit enjoying the nice morning while contemplating attempting to get closer to the potholes. After around 10 min noticed a man walking straight towards the potholes with phone in hand, edging closer to try and have a look. After realising he was probably after the same answers called him over to introduce myself and ask if he was after the potholes. Turns out it was Kid Ron Satan, a cacher who i had semi-stalked on GC.com while watching my trackable he held being logged at places for the last few months.
After one last ditch effort to get close to the potholes, we decided to look for evidence of more back along the rocks and found a few smaller ones.
TFTEC Jeff, Great way to spend the morning

An interesting earthcache in a stunning location, and a nice simple one for us to understand! Sometimes we struggle with the advanced geology involved with some earthcaches but this one seemed pretty straightforward. We visited at a fairly low tide with a small swell but even then we had to be careful and watch out for the occasional wave. We know of several places like this that we now know have been formed by the same method, most notably the figure of eight pools in the Royal National Park. Really enjoyed the walk here and the informative write-up. Worthy of a fav point. Thanks barefootjeff!

Out and about early this morning finding a few caches.
I made my way down from the top of the hill and out to the rock ledge.
A little bit of careful footwork had me at the potholes.
I soon had the answers needed. [^]

The last of the caches the Garbageman and family completed in the company of the Mighty Minions today. This was a real challenge today as the tide was rising and was covering the site with each wave. I'm hoping I gleaned enough information to suit the CO. I did enjoy exploring the area immensely, as did the kids who went crab hunting on the nearby platform. Answers sent by email.TFTC
After my chocolate melting in the car, Seaeagles and I determined that it would be hot enough for a swim! A swift drive to Pearly and a toe dip in the water deternined that the water was VERY COLD! (In hindsight, probably much warmer than my swim this week in Tassie!) A walk around the rocks, being the warmer option, we opted to check out the earthcache. To get a full understanding to be able to answer the questions, Seaeagles tentatively chose to take a dip. Both of us eager to be the 'second one' to take the plunge, we edged in, making many squeals and yelps! Once in, the water temperature was 'regulated' and a bath was pleasent. TFTC!!!!
It was forecasted to be a beautiful spring day (28°) so where place better to go than pearl beach. Sadly it felt like it never reached the target temperature but it was still beautiful down at pearl. The water was frighteningly cold so we walked up the beach instead. To the end of the beach I had never been before! I had never walked around the point on the old road either. At the potholes we went through the questions and then tested the water again as they looked perfect for a bath but nope it was still freezing! But the temptation of a bath became too strong so I jumped in anyway for a refreshment. I'm glad I did in the end, and every time a big wave came through it would refill the bath with more cold water.
What a great place I'd never seen before! I can see myself coming here a lot in summer and having a bath to watch the waves go by

Mighty Minions was kind enough to take me out for the day today and Mr Roo decided to come along too.
I really wanted this one for the July Monthly Challenge so we'd tried to time our arrival for low tide. We got here about half an hour before then but the sea was quite rough with waves crashing over gz every few minutes so it wasn't possible to get down. We stood up on the track to get the information we needed and took photos of each other. Mighty Minions has sent in our answers and hopefully we have them all correct.

I was having a surf at the beach but my timing was off and there were a few good waves to be had before the low tide came in and ruined everything. I thought about staying out in the surf for longer hoping that there might be a few decent waves here and there but compared to the waves that were had a mere hour ago it was a disappointing affair. I decided to better use my time by finally doing a few of the caches in the area and as it was low tide then this one was the perfect choice!!
After doing a couple of other geocaches in the area I made my way around the point. I haven't walked along here for many years. I'm sure the ocean bath was in better condition when I came here last. I made my way around to the co-ordinates to find that although it was low tide, the seas were still quite large (hence the good waves earlier). I sat back and watched the area for 10 minutes, trying to work out the answers from the safety of the dry area of the rocks. I did as good as I could before I decided I had to go and have a closer look. Probably not the safest of ideas but I couldn't come this far and not have a decent crack.
Whilst I had been watching the area I had been counting sets and the timing of sets. I worked out the patterns and then the best time to try and dash in and have a quick look before another big wave came to wash everything away. My first attempt wasn't great. I didn't notice a darker area which containing a very slippery algae which brought mt to my hands. I guess it was better realising how slippery it was then rather than on the way out when a big wave came through.
I retreated and waited for the perfect time again. This time I got through all right and managed to make my way to the pot holes to have a bit of a look. I went back and forth out of the crash zone for a few waves before the next big set was due to roll in. Thankfully I survived and after watching the swell smash up against the rocks for so long I realised why people get in trouble when rock fishing.
Thanks for the Earth Cache Barefoot! My 12th Earth Cache and counting!
TFTC Cheers

It appears that I forgot to log this one when I went there with Mumma-Kel (who got CO approval to log the find) and the geo-kids on 28 September, while we were having a family day at Kiddies Corner. I've often looked at potholes when walking along rock shelves by the sea, but it was interesting studying them from above ... since the sea conditions that day militated against a closer study. I'll upload a couple of pics I took that day to confirm I was there ... the file name is the date and time.
Thanks for this earthcache barefootjeff ... it made for a pleasant walk around the rocks on a lovely Sunday afternoon in spring.

Found on our trip to Ettalong Beach for the weekend. An email has been sent to the owner with my answers and I have already received a response - thank you! This location is amazing - the holes are awesome to look at and it's cool to see the waves crash against it. It's almost like these holes were drilled by humans. After examining the holes for a few minutes, we continued walking along the amazing path above. A little bit slippery, but a very peaceful experience. TFTC barefootjeff!
I had answered the theoretical questions some time ago, but thought it would be prudent to actually visit the site to gather the requested evidence without using the description's background image A good day out on the headland too, with low tide and cool breeze. Most enjoyable, due in no small part to barefootjeff's preference for interesting sites with good views. TFTEC
Two Earthcaches in a day, yeah why not.
Headed out here after an epic 20 km paddle, 10 km hike in and around Patonga. These couldrons are great examples and thanks for bringing me here. Timed it pefect as far as tide's go, but there was still a 3ft swell lashing at the rocks here. Said hello to the Trig whilest here as well.

Very interesting adventure. Went with dlturner and geo kids. A great day of learning was had by all. Some amazing rock formations and pieces of sandstone. First time around this side of umina.
What a wonderful walk and education for the geo kids. Email sent. Done with Roz65.
Having seen this cache published a while ago and being close to home I was keeping it in reserve, thankfully unknown to me the international day of the earth cache was not far away and the planets must have aligned because for a change I was not working. We set off from the car park nearby and made our way toward the GZ on the outgoing tide about half way out one of the team members slipped over and decided to wait about until I had finished. These are certainly nice formations that are in all stages of development, it was interesting to learn about the formation of these pot holes Thanks Barefoot Jeff for another great cache Fav given
Found or rather done today at around 12:45lm with SkyPirate~ and AuroraEve. The tide was supposed to be low near 12:10 or thereabouts so it was good time to go and since today is Earth day it worked really good for us. We walked all the way around to Pearl beach might as well I figured since we were here. Thanks for the cache and I'm glad I hadn't rushed out to do this one earlier. Now it lets us get the souvenir for today. I'm not attaching pictures of the actual holes like it was asked unlike others. I am though attaching a pic of a platform nearby with holes.
Brought the geokids for a rock hop round the headland from Kiddies Cnr to Pearl, pausing to take note of the potholes along the way. The tide was mid-level so we had a reasonably free run, but couldn't get too close to the potholes at GZ, finding others to explore, and spotting a crab living in one. The geokids also really liked the long drainage grooves. Thanks for bringing us back to one of our favourite spots on the coast and for helping us learn more about the formations
Happy Earthcache Day!

Did this today with MrDamage and Skypirate. It was a fun walk and the potholes were interesting, we like looking in these for small fish and things. The water was washing over the holes sometimes, Skypirate got closer than I wanted to. Thanks for the lesson.
This is a very difficult cache because you have to visit so many times. Even at dead low tide the waves may break over the rock shelf and GZ so picking the right time to visit is critical. I approached from the track above even though you are warned about possible injury or death from falling rocks, and the huge piles of rocks below the track attest to this. A rock shelf below my childhood home on the south coast had several potholes like these but were much more protected and were magic microcosms with fish, molluscs and seaweed gardens. Thanks to barefootjeff for this great earthcache on an excellent rock shelf with so much to see.
Total Caches Found 5806
Although I have walked along this section of the coastline many times, This is the first time I have noticed the Potholes, Thanks Jeff for bringing me here again

We had been checking the wind, tide and the moon and decided to go for it with the swells dropping. We timed our visit for exactly low tide (0.44m). We parked at kiddies corner and headed around the rocks past the old pool to GZ where we saw some lesser examples along the way. The rocks sure are slippery in some parts even in bare foot as the CO suggests so maybe the T rating needs to be upped a bit as there where a couple of times we almost slipped over. Upon getting near to GZ it was under water from some of the swell which was not big but enough to was over what we needed to see. We waited a bit and thought about coming back another day but then there was a break in the small sets and we where able to to get close enough to find the information we needed. Unfortunately the surf had left the pools a little cloudy but we could see what we need at the top. We did get a little wet on our feet and legs from some splashes and retreated when some more sets came in. Nice peaceful views this morning and then we watched the sun come up over the hills behind Lobster Beach. For future finders watch out if taking kids although they should be ok 10m back from GZ and it really does has to be right at low tide or a low low tide plus the swell needs to be small. A fav pt from us. TFTEC **FTF**

Congratulations to bella at waggy for braving the conditions and claiming FTF! As suggested, I've bumped the terrain up to 2.5 - all the rain and big seas over the last few weeks seems to have encouraged the slippery slime on the rocks to spread.
