This is the new drawbridge at Exmouth (Southwest UK) docks. It is part of a new multi-million pound development with some very expensive properties that overlook the marina. The big boat in the background of the photo belongs to the 'Carters', who are the developers.

Found this back in July, took photo, and promptly forgot to log. Happened to be at the pub at Winkwell, Hemel Hempstead, when a longboat came along, needing the bridge opened, so got a few pics.
The swing bridge over the canal at Winkwell (Bourne End) which allows both cars and boats to pass through the narrow opening.
Well the Australia bridge really was better but this will have to do. I couldnt talk scoutboy into hanging off the bridge for the photo. You will have to settle for palm trees and kayaks.
This bridge is in Larkspur, Marin County California (I think its in the Larkspur city limits) and is just off Sir Francis Drake Blvd before the Ferry Terminal. It is easily seen from Hwy 101 but is a bit hard to find a spot to take a photo from - this is from a kayak club dock area. It has been a point of controversy for some time - many folks want it to be removed but it would be needed if they ever get the light rail going in Marin. We can only hope (that they get us some more public transit!)

This is the canal bridge at Winkwell, in Hertfordshire. It rotates to allow the canal barges through.
The local swans have to duck as they pass under it, as it is so close to the water!

This bridge is in Darling Harbor Sydney Australia and works still. This was a great find for a moving bridge AND a unique tourist experience. The control tower sits on the middle of the bridge and if you are doing something like hunting for a nearby cache, you might just climb up the ladder and find it! The tower, not the cache, but a worthy find in and of itself.
The small cabin houses all sorts of Frankenstein like switches from the 1800s. This is the oldest (I think) of the swing bridges. It was so much fun to see the operator start the process - ships call in as to when he needs to open it, and he does a demo a couple of times during the week as well. He starts the siren and the flashing lights and tells all the people to get their butts off the span. Then he closes the gates and starts flipping the switches and the whole center piece pivots out over the water to open the space for the boats. It is SO FUN to ride the bridge out over the water. I highly recommend it.

This bridge near Larkspur Landing in Marin County is part of the Southern Pacific railway that has been out of commission for decades. This bridge was famous as it was a filmed in one of the final scene of Clint Eastwood's film Dirty Harry.
Limfjordsbroen, Aalborg, Denmark.
Got a few shots in daylight, but forgot the GPS in the pic, so I had to go back. By that time it was dark.
There is a webcamcache on the bridge. Visit GCQFWA at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCQFWA.

This is a swing train bridge in Welland Ontario Canada that I had the privilege of having to swing on when I was a child and watch the ships go by in the Welland Canal.
Thanks.
Thanks.
This cool moving bridge is located across Dickinson Bayou in Texas. It spins on center to connect the tracks when a train crosses. This bridge has been in place for a long time.

This bridge is in Port Huron MI. It is a railroad bridge that crosses the Black River. It connects to a ferry that goes to Canada.
Today I found a swinging bridge in the old port of Antwerp. This one is located between the Willemdok and Bonapartedok. As the name already suggests, the Bonapartedok was build by Napoleon. The bridge is called Nassaubrug and is freshly restorated ( only working for some weeks now ).
This is rotating bridge 7 pass over the Chambly canal in city of Carignan, Quebec, Canada. Since the canal is closed for the winter season, I can't take a picture of the bridge while rotated. Thanks for the cache!! N45 24.526 W73 15.198
Found this moving bridge in the Netherlands. This bridge is in Vianen (Merwedekanaal)
This is a very unique bridge:
Dreifeld Zug- Klapp- Brücke
Threepad migrant rectable bridge
It is located at Kiel,Germany
On the following log you can see the white backupbridge in the forground.
After building the Dreifeld Zug- Klapp- Brücke there where some engeneering problems discovered and it toked more time to build.
But due a agreement there must be a short pedestrial access from Railwaystation to the new Norway-Terminal, so the Backupbridge was build in short time.
After installing the Threepadbridge the where more problems discovered.
Because the bridge must be maintainced more often and longer as planned, it was dicided to keep the replacementbridge. It is always open and only used, if there is aproblem with the main bride

Replacementbridge at Kiel, Germany
The white "Pushbridge" in the left. Right the red-white-yellow mainbridge.
Due problems while building the Dreifeld Klap- Zug- Brücke, this bridge was build quickly to give a short access to the new Norway-terminal.
The Replacementbridge is pushed forward to close it. The Entrances are on the side using the Gatway of the Threepodbridge
After installing the main bridge, it was decided to keep this bridge as a replacement.
It is always open and only be used while maintaining the main bridge.

Found this cool moving bridge over a canal south of Banbury in England. It was over a canal, it is raised to allow the long boats to pass under it. Thanks for the cache.
This one section draw bridge is near the mouth of the Black River. The Black River leads off of the St. Clair River which is one of the connectors on the Great Lakes. This is in Port Huron Michigan.
We found this cool moving bridge at Hogsback on the Rideau Canal during our visit to Ottawa. TFTH.
A pedestrian bridge over the harbor in Bremen Vegesack, designed by Design Labor Bremerhaven, build 2000. The light only on one pilar standing construction opens on demand for ships entering and leaving the harbor.

This is the railway's rotating bridge over the Chambly canal in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada. The canal is actually closed to ships for the winter, so I can't have a picture of the bridge while rotated. Thanks for the cache!!
This is a newer drawbridge in Greatbridge Virginia, that's my girlfriend in the picture. Waited for a while for a boat to come through but no luck, maybe next time.
This bridge rises in order for tall ships to pass, found in British Columbia Canada.
This bridge can be found at the Nations Park in Lisbon, Portugal. It was made to be raised up in order to let pass boats inside the park area.

Here's the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge in action! Rather than sit in the line of traffic waiting for the bridge to open, we thought it would be cooler to pull into a nearby parking lot and take pictures...just in case this one had not yet been logged. We grabbed the coordinates while crossing the bridge a little later.
The bridge, built in 1935, spans the Intracoastal Waterway and connects Wilmington, NC with the small coastal community of Wrightsville Beach. This bridge has survived many devastating hurricanes, most notably Hazel, Fran, and Floyd. We were lucky enough to catch the bridge in its upright mode, and saw many yachts and boats floating through as though on parade. Beautiful day for a flotilla!

This bridge ties Esquimalt to Victoria, BC Canada. It raises to allow tall ships and barges to pass up the Gorge.

There are several of these types of bridges in the docks area of Gloucester, UK. The area has been refurbished but still has many of the original Victorian features, buildings and bridges - well worth a visit.

This is a photograph of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge I-95/I-495 (Capitol Beltway) over the Potomac River, between Virginia and Maryland. The photo was taken from the Alexandria, Virginia waterfront because I could not manage a photo alone while driving across the bridge (8 lanes @ a conservative 60mph!!!); however, the coordinates listed above were recorded as I passed over the drawspan on the moveable/lift portion of the bridge. The drawspan/lift portion of the bridge is raised many times each week for the passage of tall ships. The schedule is announced via radio and highway warning signs...and HUGE traffic backups occur on the Beltway. The new bridge will be higher and the requirement to open the span will be lessened.
The bridge has been under construction/replacement for the past 2 years, and the project will not be completed until 2008, with the final interchange at Maryland Highway 210 finished in 2011. The bridge will be widened and all approach and exit interchanges will be replaced. I have included a link to the Wilson Bridge Project website. I enjoyed this, and all Locationless/Reverse caches very much and will not be happy to see them move to the Waymarking site. TFTC

This RR bridge is on the Fox River in Green Bay WI, a few miles south of where the river flows into Green Bay. A few years ago some vandals burned the bridge tenders quarters. I'm not sure if this bridge still carries RR traffic, I've never seen it closed.

Logged this one way back July 15th...but I forgot to take a picture with me and my GPSr. I've been back there several times but had no camera. I figured I better get this one logged before it's too late!
The Sacramento Delta has many draw, swinging and other interesting types of bridges, over it's 1000+ miles of waterways.
This particular one is the 'Old River Bridge' located on Highway 4 as you travel between Byron and Stockton, just east of Discovery Bay. It spans between the Byron Tract and Victoria Island, over the waterway known as 'Old River'.
As you can see in the pics, it swivels in the center to allow taller boats to pass by. I thought this one had more character because the pilot house is actually on the bridge.
Location checked with Locationless Proximity Analyzer.

This turn-around bridge is located just down from the locks in Fenelon Falls, Ontario. It has now been closed for the winter, but remains open during the summer for vessels going through the locks. It was formerly part of the Victoria rail bed, but has long been out of use for trains.
The controls for the bridge are located in the base of the pedastal and it is opened and closed each year by members of the local snowmobile club as part of the agreement whereby they use the bridge throughout the winter as part of the snowmobile trail through the village. During the summer, it has no real use with the exception of acting as a platform for kids to jump into the lake.

This bridge is in Baghdad Iraq, it spans a small man made "Lake" the Saddam made so that his palaces would be as secure as they could be. It is also very near a Traditional Cache.

FOUR BRIDGES COMPLEX, BIRKENHEAD DOCKS, WIRRAL, UK
This bridge is most unusual as it lifts, but it has no hinge, no pivot, no cables, no pedastel and no hydraulic rams! It rocks & rolls out of the way. Water is pumped into the large red balance tank and this causes it to roll back, lifting the dridge in the process!
This bridge is on the entry to the East Float (from the small dock leading off the River Mersey), and is part of the four bridges complex. There is an identical bridge at the other end of the east float (leading through to the west float) called Duke Street Bridge and that was logged on 11th July 2005 by ac-p

OK. I'll try this one one again. Got a pic with the GPS in it too. The bridge is the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge also called the Cherry Street Bridge in Toledo, Ohio. You can see by the pictures that there is ongoing construction with the lift decking to be replaced in the fall of 2005. Thanks for the great idea.
While on vacation in titusville Florida, stopped by the haul over canal area at the manatee viewing deck. Had to go over this bridge to get to the viewing area. Was able to snap a shot of it while it was up for a boat.
This is a moving bridge! As you can see, Hans is opening the bridge by hanging his own weight onto the chain. Around Schipluiden, the Netherlands, there are many bridges which you will have to open yourself if you want to pass by boat.

This bridge is not totaly within your definition but it is so special I want you to share it.
The floating bridges of the noordhollandkanaal in the northwest part of the Netherlands. This one is in Koedijk, and is called the Koedijkervlotbrug. (Floatingbridge near Koedijk)
This bridge (and the three remaining others) are made of two pontons wich move away under the ramps. They are about 150 years old and still working fine. The two major problems are that the ramp is steep, so it is slow to pass by and the bridges are so narrow that even a bike cant't pass a car. When a Lorry tries to get over it wil sink but ther will be little dammage to the bridge itself.
Nowadays they are remotly opened and closed, in the past you needed two bridgekeepers, one on each side of the canal.

Nowadays they are remotly opened and closed, in the past you needed two bridgekeepers, one on each side of the canal.

bjorri, de reis is het doel.
We spent the summer volunteering at Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. Long way from our home in Southern AZ. We took a side trip to Seattle and I recollected a locationless dealing with a moving bridge so I took the picture anticipating, albeit pessimistic, the "find". I saw today that you had opened the duplicate find window. Exciting since we are now back in Southern AZ and don't have many moving bridges, let alone flowing rivers.
This bridge is an old railroad bridge that can be seen from the Chitenden Locks, the busiest in the USA!! We were there to see the salmon migrating to their spawning grounds and to see the expertise of the lock masters crowding the many pleasure craft thru the lock.
Locationless caches are a great opportunity for those in rural areas to still log finds. Let's hope that they do not go away too soon.

Wish i could have got the bridge open but barge traffic is down right now. It is a Burlington Northern bridge over the Missouri river in Kansas City, MO.
Sorry pictures are so bad but it was almost dark when we were there. Bridge was located on St. Johns River, Route 17/92 at Lake Monroe, between Sanford and DeBary, Florida USA it is a swing type bridge you can see the control house in the center, also there is a plate in the center area that covers a hand crank gear so the bridge could be turned by hand if there wasn't any electric.
Thanks

This swing bridge crosses the Columbia river. I was'nt lucky enough to find it in the open position, you can clearly see the control house at the top though.
All the moving bridges in Seattle were long ago claimed so with the new ruling here I am relogging one of the drawbridges, namely the Montlake Bridge which I can almost see from my office window (one bldg is in the way). I took a few photos, including one underneath and then checked out the bridge on Google Earth adn - guess what? It just so happens that when the satellite was snapping photos of the Montlake area, the bridge was open! peace, fishiam
This rotating railroad bridge Is located in St. Joseph Missouri & is still in use today. It is connects St. Joseph Missouri to Elwood Kansas.
It was a good day. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the home game and I found this bridge. No plaques or info anywhere around the tell anything about this bridge.
This one's been logged before, but we are posting new pics. This swing bridge is located in Black Point, California, on the Petaluma River.
Thanks for the find!

This is a swing bridge on the Chambly Canal in the province of Quebec, Canada. The canal stretches from St. Jean Sur Richlieu to the Basin de Chambly. We traveled the canal on our boat early in its season, so the many bridges along the canal were not tended individually. Instead, we had our own bridgetender, Vicky, who traveled in her car from bridge to bridge, and opened them as we came to them.
I have included pictures of the bridge and the mechanism that turns the bridge -- wheels that travel on a round track. We were unable to leave our boat, but got up close and personal with the bridge, as you can see. Also, since our GPS is incorporated into our navigation system of the boat, I have a picture of the chart plotter screen showing the location of the bridge (labeled) with our boat (the red boat shape) squarely in the middle, and the GPS reading to the left side of the screen, demonstrating that I took the photo when we were in the center of the bridge.

Found this bridge that move in Karosta, Liepaja, Latvia.
The Karosta Canal was one of the first constructions of the Karosta complex. Floating construction equipment was used for the digging process; in 1901 it was finished and ready to receive the first ships. A side - branch of the canal was used as a basin for ships and submarines with maintenance facilities consisting of one floating and two dry - docks. A swinging metal bridge was built across the canal and was opened in 1906. Since that time it has been fully operational. The bridge consists of two parts that can be rotated to positions parallel with the canal banks.
Greetings from Latvia! martinello

Ørje Bru in Norway was built in 1930 over the Ørje Canal The Ørje Canal was finished in 1860 and lifts boats a hight of 10 m.
This Draw Bridge is located in San Francisco, California. Just outside the main entrance to the ball park where the Giants play. It is the Strauss Trunnion Bascule Bridge. Built in 1933. Still in operation but wasn't up today unfortunatley. Thanks for the cache.
a little work being done on this one but its one of the older ones in downtown Milwaukee.
We found this bridge that moves on North State Street (US 23) in Cheboygan, Michigan, USA. It crosses the channel that comes in from Lake Huron and rises up to allow large boats to enter the channel. We had started to walk across the bridge looking for a benchmark when a bell rang and the traffic barriers came down. The photos we got are all from the top as we couldn’t cross back over the barriers to get a side view. After the bridge was lowered we walked to the middle for the GPS coords. Never did find the benchmark we were looking for but glad we had the camera and GPS with us so we could log this cache!
This is the Jack-knife bridge located in Tonawanda, New York. It is a cantilever bridge over the Barge Canal, which is a widened and deepened Erie Canal. It was built by the New York Central Railroad in 1919 with the idea that all the bridges on the canal would have the ability to be raised and lowered to allow ship traffic to pass under it. This idea was given up because of the huge costs involved. The bridge was test-lowered a few times when it was first built and hasn't been moved since. The distinctive feature of this bridge is the enormous chunk of concrete at one end to act as a counterbalance for the bridge.
This Drawbridge is on Beach Drive between Wildwood & Cape May,New Jersey,USA. Sorry that I Didn't catch it open. When we stopped to take the photos they had traffic stopped but all they were doing was tranfering the days take to a Brinks Truck.
This "bascule"(hinge in french) bridge is located in the Old Port of Quebec City. As my family and I were leaving the parking lot of the Farmers Market, the bridge was upright but I had forgotten my GPSr in the vehicule. Once I returned with it, the bridge was down . On our way back to the parking area, the bridge was drawn up and I didn't want it to go back down before I snapped a picture, reason why the upright shot is a long one.
This particular bridge has been logged previously but with only one picture. I took many because I love large scale mechanical stuff.
This unusual bridge is at Grafton in northern NSW, Australia. I'm not sure how long since it last raised, but it is a two level bridge with rail on the bottom half and cars above. Early on in the history of this area lots of timber was floated down the river and before the rail line arrived most cargo was transported by boat.
Some info on the bridge can be seen at:
http://www.graftoncity.nsw.gov.au/grafton_bridge.htm
The bridge is over the Clarence River, and still sees several trains a day from Sydney to Brisbane (passenger and freight) as well as countless cars on the top deck. Waypoint logged was from the middle of the bridge while driving over, took these pics Dec 17.

While visiting the Beijing Zoo last weekend, a language problem caused me to buy a package ticket that included entry to the Zoo, and a boat ride to the Summer Palace along a canal that apparently used to be a river. Since I had bought the ticket, I thought I might as well take the boat ride.
The trip involved a change of boats at one point, because of a lock in the canal Isn't there a locationless cache for that? About two kilometres further on the boat passed under the hinged bridge in the attached picyures. Isn't there a locationless cache for that too? What a coincidence that both caches have the same owner!
I visited the Zoo again this weekend, bought the same package ticket, and took the attached pictures of the bridge.

Railroad bridge over the Pearl River near Wanilla, Mississippi. Originally built by the Mississippi Central Railroad, it is currently owned by Canadian National. Supposedly it was only turned one time after it was built. The gears are still in place, but it is fixed in the closed position.
This swinging bridge can be found in Hobart Tasmania in Australia. It opens to allow boats into the Victoria Dock. It was built in 1961.
