Not sure why I have been putting this one off! Lovely walk and absolutely no one around. Admittedly, there was a lake already at the parking spot thanks to the recent decent amount of rain, and getting out southwards is close to impossible as I discovered, but the walk around the lake was nice and peaceful. TFTC!!!!

All good here. Cache in pretty good condition considering the GZ. Could do with a couple of hours in the sun to dry everything out, but not a major issue at the moment.Great location, thanks for the cache!!

Tramping day today. The last time we were here was just over 2 years ago when lockdown was relaxed. We were so excited to get out, I forgot to download this cache. Of course there is no coverage here so I missed out finding this cache. Today I had it downloaded and ready so when everyone stopped to regroup, a couple of us carried on. The hint and size of this cache meant that we had found and signed the log before the rest caught up. Everything was in great condition. Thanks for the placement GenCuster.

I actually grew up in Mamaku and had not been out on this trail for well over 35 years. As kids a group of us used to ride our bikes out to the lake and go swimming. It didn't take long to find the cache thanks to your hint. So the log book has been signed and the cache is nicely back in its place all ready for the next geo-hunter. Thanks heaps for taking the time to set up this cache and for maintaining it for so long. I really appreciate your efforts in doing so. TFTC

As the summer months come to an end, and with daylight savings ending for us real soon, it's time for an extended weekend trip to Rotorua (from Wellington). Lots of activities are on the agenda, and geocaching is one of them. I had several specific caches marked to find on this trip, some to meet specific requirements, some were such fun puzzle solves that I just had to come and sign the log, and are some just because. This cache is one of them.

What a hidden gem of a walking trail. Spent a nice morning in the area at one with nature, and was rewarded with a find here of one of my target caches. All good here.

Thanks to opted-out user for placing this cache here.

Targeted this old cache to fill a gap in my month-hidden grid. Nice patch of bush but chilly today. Was accompanied by a lone dog with GPS collar for a while. Quick find of cache after some minor bush bashing, still a lot of the old tree left after 20 years! Back at the road we met the owner who had lost all 3 dogs! Thanks for the cache and another Jasmer square!

A fun and quick trip into the bush, with a canine companion for part of it. Found the cache fairly quickly. TFTC GenCuster & Mamakuman!

A quick find while adding this track network to Open street map [if for no other reason to assist future geo cachers!]
Many thanks

There where a couple of caches that where on the "must find" list, and this was one of them Big Grin

I had been here last year, got to the township, looked at the time, and cache page details, and decided it was too late in the day, and so left the cache for another time.

So this is that time.

Parking at some suggested parking co-ords, I parked on the edge of the road. Not wanting to get stuck, I avoided the turn in, which was partially under water, and tyre tracks gouged the ground.

Looking about, I soon found the path into the bush. On I went, the first stop was another trad, but try as I might that cache remained hidden.

Looking at the watch, I knew I had to get a move on, so off I went. Arriving at the sign, I went right (anti-clockwise). This is meant to be the shortest route as mentioned on the description. Arriving at GZ, I started searching, I missed the cache the first time, ended up at the wrong end, back tracked, dug a little deeper, and found the cache Wink

It is 3.30 pm, and although not late, once you get in the bush, and now its winter, light was changing/fading, I knew time was critical.

After signing the log, taking some pictures, it was time to go back the way I came. I considered doing the loop, but was not sure how long it might take? went with what I knew, and was back at the sign with no problems.

Then I decided to take the 5 minute detour to the water. Now I am not sure if I was looking at the lake? but the area was so dry, only a small trickle of water. So no pictures of the bush reflecting in the lake. But I did take more pictures to put on the cache page.

Another stop at the trad, still could not find it (animal took it?), then was back at the car with little time to spare, so a few more caches could be found before driving for home.

Thanks again GenCuster ex Mamakuman for the hide and the adventure today, cache and hide all good.

Did a trip out here today to clean up this area. Knew my phone wouldn't like the tree cover to much but with the good hint we came up with the cache. Love the ammo tins. Tftc

#6448. We are staying in Rotorua for a couple of days. My eldest daughter was doing the canopy zipline trip this morning. I decided it was time to pick up this old timer. My family for once decided to join me on the bush walk. I have been in this area a few times in the past. Its a lovely forest. In fact I wrote a number of letters to various National ministers back in the mid-1970s to stop the Forest Service clear-felling the entire block of native forest at Horohoro and converting it to pines. Good to see the huge tawa trees along this path and the tawari trees by the lake. We could also hear robins, tomtits and cuckoos calling today. Well we reached the Narnia like track marker and headed north. Soon after we were off path and closing in on GZ. The coordinates seemed a bit out for me today but there was one obvious hiding area nearby and after about 5 minutes looking, I was finally in the right spot to see the cache. Great to find it. Signed the logbook and replaced the cache as found. All good here. Then headed back to check out the lake before returning to the car. Thanks GenCuster for the cache.

23-Sep-18
Decided that today was the day to look for this cache. Been out here before with no luck thanks to dwindling daylight so we set off a lot earlier today. Got to GZ without too many issues and unlike last time we read the clue properly and soon had the cache in hand. Found a travel bug that wasn't listed on the cache page so will log that separately. Love finding this type of cache... makes the walk through the bush even more rewarding. TFTC

I was looking at my map and became slightly unhappy with the state Rotorua was in so I sent a message out to Mc Jandals who became my co-pilot for today. We were able to find all but one of the caches on my list and even ended up roping in Davidson Clan to help on the Mamaku leg of our trip. This was an old cache (2002) so I was a little excited about picking it up. 62 Finds in 16 years wasn't a lot either and I had to have a chuckle at the cache contents of years gone by... chocolate bars, nerds, muesli bars, lollipops - a bit of a 'no-no' these days Smile

Everything was in good order here - cheers GenCuster for keeping this on going. TLNLSL Smile

On a lil mish from Tauranga today with PP to clear some of the Rotorua spots. A bit overcast and showery, still it’s only water. I am logging these with a generic template on Cachly. Many Thanks to all cache owners for the placements. Cheers

No trouble with this one found while tramping in area with our group.
Great bush have been here before found the old hut had a great day.

We came up to get a chicken from the free as a bird battery hen Rescue lady and had to do this cache while we were in Mamaku the last time we came here we were newbie cachers and hadn't saved the caches to our phone and as there is no reception up here we couldn't find the cache. This time we now have a GPS and phone loaded which made it a quick find. We did the loop down by the Lake or should we say stream the kids ran down to the stream and got stuck in the mud.

After having a Divine moment, in another nearby bush, headed over to nab these Geocaches before heading back home. Track much easier to follow than the previous one I was on.
Took a few minutes to locate the cache.

Decided to take on the these two local caches which have been on out hit list for some time now. Loved the walk in, and after having found a previous DNF in Mamaku and "Dyna Saw" we were hopeful of finding this one. Were a bit confused by the scenery though. I was under the impression that "Roto" meant "Lake". When we discovered what looked like a dried up river bed, it was quite a disappointment. I must say, I was looking forward to seeing those great reflections in the water. However, a little further on we did find the most incredible mushroom I think either of us had ever seen. It was an incredibly iridescent blue colour and stood out from everything else around it. Anyway, we did find the GZ and soon had the cache found and log signed. Thanks for a great cache.

12-Nov-13
This one has been on our near to home list for just too long. So. Today is the day.

It is getting a bit overgrown in there and it was hard to decide, to which end the hint referred. Hunted around both and after a few minutes found it's hidey hole. The wind making the trees grind together, produces a spooky noise.

Thanks GenCuster. Have a fav for the cache and the walk.

On our way home, we saw that you have moved in only doors away. No noisy parties please

09-Feb-13
Didn't find but we found dyna saw . Phone had no coverage and I couldn't remember the clue so we did the 30 min walk looking everywhere we could think but didn't fine. Kids enjoyed the walk will come back at a later date and try again .

Looked and looked, got wetter and wetter, dirtier and dirtier scrabbling under the massive fallen tree...

19-Apr-12
Lovely sunny autumn day for a forest walk. Nabbed this one on our way back from a walk to West road, listening for birds and botanising on this great patch of remnant native forest. Great to see some big rimu, tawa and tawhari. Thanks for inspiring us to get up here.

28-Mar-12
Didn't think I would have the luck to find this one and the other cache at the beginning of the Mokaihaha Track. Phone service dropped off just out from Mamaku. Took a gamble and noticed that my compass was still working. YAY. Quickly came to the cache site. Since it's been a while from the last visitor, there's not much of a geotrail. Hint was way helpful. Found cache easily and in very good order. Loved the walk. Didn't take long to complete both caches on this walkway. TFTC.

30-Jul-11
We had company from a stray hunting dog to walk to this one. Nice little spot. Cache took a while to find, GPS was a bit out and the area was quite overgrown! But we got there in the end, even I ended up with wet pants. On our way out of the bush we saw a truck parked on the side of the road. We assumend the dog's owner wouldn't be too far so we left it with the ute. Took TB TFTC

A very nice walk on a nice day, except for the cold wind. TFTC SL in - cards, out - whistle. My daughter enjoyed her day geocaching with me. Blew the whisle all the way back to the car. Not the most discreet little monkey.

I just love these walks in our fantastic bush. GPS took me right to it. The reflection on the lake was not disturbed by the gentla breeze that was blowing at canopy level.

Cheers for the cache.

Nice hide, thanks for the heads up on this walk, checked out the lake, well all but the water! Big Grin,Could have rung my cloths out and help with the water supply Big Grin, Very nasty shower ! will have to come back & have a decent tramp in these parts, Muzy Man!

A very pleasant walk into this one. Found after a short search, certainly needed the hint in here. We had walked this track about 2 years ago, at the time not realizing that there was a cache along the way.
So we decided to come out to Mamaku to catch up a few of the caches in the area and this one was the last of the three that we tackled.

It took us a couple of minutes to locate the hide, but was fairly straightforward.

Picked up the Baby Diplodocus travel bug.

Thanks for the cache.

So close to home and never time to go there. Done it now ! Didn't see the baby diplodocus TB tho'. Noted a small book but no tag. Perhaps the next cacher can check it out, I may have missed it although there isn't much in the cache right now.

#969. A nice track, but didn't encounter anybody else on the way, except a nice family in a Landrover who asked us if we needed help as we were just parking by the side of the road. They said they had been inside the forest, but found it quite eery.

Wow, we really enjoyed this cache and the walk in. Dropped off Jake the Kangaroo Rat travel bug. 5yr old was able to cope with terrain and 12yr old found cache. Took bouncy ball and left NZ Koru. T4TC. Have checked out the picnic entrance too and will back later to walk it.

The Freezer Mice strike again!!!
Out on a day of pretty sedate caching (so only got 8 in the end), and of all of them this was definately 'the' cache of the day.
I would far much rather do 1 simple cache like this, than 20 bl**dy micro/nano urbans ANY day!
This is what TFM consider to be true geocaching.
Nice wee bush walk, awesome location with beaut views, and a decent sized cache at the end of it.
Thanks so much for the placment GC, so glad to have kept on going out here. Smile

Well this proved to be a very memorable cache. I was a bit cavalier in my approach to my chosen parking spot with the result that the back of the car slid into a very large and deep rut. Oops and no cell phone coverage. Took a few attempts to get the revs right but with lots of thumps and bangs we got out courtesy of the traction control system. Always amazes me where this Outback will go. Needless to say you can park quite safely on the side of the road just 5 metres away. Anyway on to the cache. The lake was a bit low and the wind up so we didn't get the full mirror affect but still a very nice walk in a great bit of bush. The cache was very well disguised by some rotted tree material (see photo). Those ammo tins really work well as it was dry inside. All clean now. It is good to see such an old cache but suprising how infrequently it is visited. I guess that just reflects the diversity in geocachers, but I'll take one of these over a dozen drive bys. Thanks GenCuster for keeping it going.

"Clearing" is a bit of a misnomer for an opening in the forest filled with head high fern, shrubs and supplejack. Crashed about a bit before literally stumbling onto the cache. Took an owl, left a road rage cone.

09-May-08
A wet morning so didn't do the circuit. Clue is very precise-I spent a short time in the wet undergrowth prior to deciphering.
TNLN thanks

Sniffed this out with my Boss. GenCuster signed the log for me. Thanks.

02-Jan-08
15:43 Went for a quick walk with Boss to replace the cache. It is still in situ and should be an easy find if you trust your GPS to get you to the (now overgrown with fern) clearing.

Replaced cache with an ammo container. Replaced the pen. Revised coordinates with 3m accuracy.

Added a couple of poly-toys. Added a yellow geocaching compass as an incentive for somebody to actually find this cache. Wink

Dropped off Cache Hiker Geocoin.

Hello- Being from the States, we never even made it to the trailhead ... only because we were trying to use our GPS and a free map to find our way. Instead we ended up driving through some very pretty scenery and farms instead. So, thanks for the nice drive. Maybe, if we ever get back here, we'll do a better job of orienting ourselves to the starting point. Smile

Searched for about 20 mins and could not find this. Been a while since anybody has been to this one. DOC have been in and laid 1080 since last logged visit. What a beautiful walk but the lake is empty could someone please go in and fill it up. Thanks

30-Sep-06
Just thought I would nip in for a quick cache. Be in and out in no time (yeah right). Then came the gravel road and then what seemed like a goat track with all the ruts. My poor car. But hey what a neat place. Found the track entrance and then the junction. Hmmm which way. Yep lets make a choice and that turned out to be the long way round. It was made easier with the track having recently been trimmed. Found the cache. In Rubber ball and out cat. I haven't been into bush like this for years and really enjoyed it. Thanks

Cache now owned by GenCuster. Last maintained 08 April 2006. Enjoy the walk folks... Smile

30-May-06
This is a really nice bush walk and a very interesting lake in the middle of nowhere.

The cache coordinates are spot on - just don't rush. GPS reception is fine in the clearings and the clue should lead you right to the cache.

Note that clearing is on LEFT of Track if you looped clockwise past lake first. Otherwise it is on your RIGHT.

Went out with Xmuggle and we found it... just!
such marginal GPS reception that the GPS was jumping between 600m and 120m all the time! But in the end with the help of Xmuggle, we worked it out!!! Even at the cache location, we were approx. 30m out! See the attached waypoint for our reading... We were really rushed, but it was an awesome outing - thanks for taking us out Xmuggle!

We (Myself, EJ & Boss the not so average dog) came to find this cache on a mercy mission. Replaced Notebook. Addded Ziplocks + spares. Dried Container & cleaned seals. Removed rubbish & old notebook. Will attempt to send to owner.

Jerran found cache easily without GPS. Coordinates are exactly right. Note that cache is to RIGHT of track as head towards lake (Turn right at sign). We'd carried straight on down to lake first and thus found cache on left as came back up the loop track.

Beautiful bush walk and a highly reflective lake. Yes, we did pause (for reflection). Weather was fine after morning rain. The bush smelt sooo nice. Bellbirds & a Kereru observed us in the clearing.

TJ and myself attempted this cache today and am sure that we had the right spot but decided to call it a day as we had set a time to start back out on the track, T took some photos I will post these up later, we are going back..on a better day and a little earlier..suprisingly enough the rain was much heavier further down the Mamaku toward Rotorua, we must have been above the clouds..great fun Smile , we saw some bright blue fungus. Wow this is the sort of place we want to come back to and explore further. Real feeling of remoteness and what a nice lake. Easy find however the log is stuffed as someone put lollies in the cache and they are weeping sugar all over the contents. Therefore the log needs replacing and cache cleaning. Removed all food - silly move putting food in caches, there were 3 food items in the cache.

Mamaku turned on a good day for us - it was hardly raining at all. A new piece of the world for us, even though we are local. GPS was well behaved and found the cache quickly. Lovely bush.

16-Jun-05
What a disappointment. Searched high and low. Ground very wet and the darkness beat us.
We were hoping to return Merv the Mamakuman to his birthplace after picking him up in Invercargill and taking him to Stewart Island then right around the country to Cape Reinga in the Far North.
We have posted two photos, one of him with his friends at Kaitaia Airport and one taken at the northernmost postbox, at Cape Reinga. We'll put him in a cache in Taranaki or Gisborne next week.
The Con of Conton gets around!
Cheers

3.00pm Waterlogged from dripping trees and having searched under many many cracked and fallen tree trunks we found it as we were giving up and about to head out. GPS erratic but could we suggest S38 10.792 E176 05.374 for the cache site rather than the co-ordinates given. Compensations during the search were the lovely lake and the bush walk. It would be a fungi specialists utopia. Many thanks Mamakuman.

Cool M&P

22-Apr-05
Nice little walk. We decided to go right at the fork, as there was no clear indication of which was the quickest way to the lake... which made the clue a bit less handy later on. Had the same problem as others; the coords were off by some margin, and there were other possible spots. Eventually Aaron found it though... "My hero!" [:X]

Thanks for the cache!

Great directions... thanks! The GPS wasn't much help under the dense foliage, it stopped working 80 m away. Went on intuition and walked straight to the cache. Took kiwi and 50 cent piece, left keychain and Canadian geocoin. Be grateful if the person collecting it logs the find on the website indicated.

Very pleasant bush walk ... site contains Chuppa chups, Face paint, Notebook/3 pens, 5c, FAI security Alarm, YoYo, Nerds, Fruit Bar, Kiwi, Owl an a green race car ... add 50c A$. Also walked to the Tin Hut.

Left side of track depends which way your walking ... and like many other visitors we found our GPS recorded it about 20m away.

Pleased the location of the start of the track was noted as it would be very easy to miss it. Nice pleasant walk around the lake. Spent half an hour looking in the wrong place then after giving up and walking around the corner found the spot. GPSr was still reading 18 m to go at the cache location.

After driving around the back roads of this foreign country, we Aussies finally managed to get to the start of the track (without having a map mind you). It was a bit wet, but nice to see the forest. Got to the lake and had a bit of trouble getting the GPS to work but eventually found a clearing that was good. Then we found the cache, although our co-ords were a bit out). We added a new visitor to the cache - the remote control travel bug from Hervey Bay Australia. Hope it doesn't stay in that 'remote' location too long.

Was a bit wet up here today with a nasty shower going across. Nice track through the bush, jogged most of the way & didn't bother checking the gps till I found a clearing, sat it on a handy stump & while it was looking for sats I found the cache very close by.

No trades.

Thanks!

GPS wouldn't lock on sat's so it had me walking backwards and forwards over the same ground.
Got tired of that so tried something else and found the cache. Modern tecnology?
I don't know where 'Lake' came from. hardly enough water for a decent duck pond.
Plenty of mud and still frozen at 1400hrs
Nil out and Nil in. Enjoyed the challenge

Talk about a wild goose chase with this one....batts in gps died at the crutial point, where the track splits and do you think I could get a lock again.....dropped down to the lake to grab some clear sky and using both gps and compass bush crashed a straight line to cache spot.

Once there spotted where it was straight away as I would place it there too.

Swapped nil

Thanks

A fair bit of rain overnight, but obviously the first descent downpour in a while as the lake was empty showing it's ugly muddy bottom! Suggest you decrypt the (non)clue BEFORE you start if it's been raining - just as well I did!

well there we are in the hills surrounded by cloud and trees.to find ourselfs pondering over where it might be.at last we have a satalite and head in a direction which will give us only the track and a little bit of thinking where to go next.hard to get a fix in the dense bush.in the end relied on what it was near by.just remember which might be the quickest way around the lake take time to think about this do u go left at the track or to the right u decide.description of the tree and the stump u cant miss it in the clearing.HE HE HE HE.

Third for the day on our northern expedition.. Popsit looked horrified at the terrain and I looked hopefully at my etrex and suspiciously at the heavy bush and overcast sky.. As expected 5 minutes into the track the etrex advised that I was on my own and wished me luck.. We reached the lake and Popsit demanded to know who had drained the lake and left a few inches of stagnent dirty water behind.. Several frogs piped up and claimed that it was a pretty good lake but we were not convinced especially as we had been at the springs! Took the oportunity to prod some life out of the etrex which obliged with 3 sats and 14 meter accuracy!!! It gave me a bearing ( which I orientated by compass) and distance to the cache of 105 Meters so I left Popsit to continue following the track while I pushed along the bearing line. As expected I hit the track again up top and right there located the tree and cache.. Who needs a GPS12 thingy Smile (Just as well as the Etrex refused to lock up more than 2 sats on the cache site)..Scoffed the Mars Mar which we liked (thanks Neil) Left a Muslie Bar which I didnt like but is good for you! We had to head back but will return to Rotorua to clean up the rest of the caches soon...

Ahh, the pleasure of a newer decent GPS with good solid satellite lock. The GPS12 had a good solid lock all the way in here. Found the cache easily once I knew the 130m deviation from my last route Wink Interestingly, put GPS12 & eTrex side by side on tree stump for 10 minutes. GPS12 had 5 satellites locked solidly with a 3D fix, eTrex had none! No signal whatsoever! Ate Chuba Chup whilst GPS's searched the sky, Left Mars Bar & 4x AA Alkaline Batteries. Thanks Smile

A balmy 5 degrees with mist and rain! This took alot of luck more than anything, spent ages walking around the lake looking for a clearing, so we could get a fix but like snoopy we too had great trouble. In the end we had to stand in the middle of the lake (luckily its shallow) and at last got a direction.
Once back in the bush no idea again, and spent an hour looking under every fallen tree (there are only about a thousand of them)Wink
Gave up and thought we would carry on back towards the car and hopefully trip over the spot.
We saw a very big fallen tree and looked there, and there it was but still no fix possible. Left a mini torch and took a keyring. thanks.

A nice start to our Saturday in RotoVegas. A pleasant walk to the cache and on around the (rather small) lake.

Merv the Mamakuman travelbug was just too good to resist, he told us he had a hankering to visit the big lights of Auckland before heading on to the Australian outback.

Left a pack of 'nerds'
