To be honest we just couldn't be bothered going off piste and there didn't look like any way in. Will watch and see whether this is found on our next visit
Out on a day exploring the island with my sister who is over here from the UK. Beautifully clear day with great views. Its been a while since I have been here.
Searched for quite a while and used Stik-a-Cranes coordinates. Kept coming back to the same sort of area but couldn't locate it today

Today was the last day we were here on the Island with team HeMaLuDy, and as this was my first time here I thought I need to get to the top.....so I set out around 7:30am for the summit, which saved me being out in the heat of the day, and dealing with many muggles that would arrive with the ferry sailings.....good choices, as I had the trail all to myself.....
Let's see how far I get....
Struggled a wee bit on this one and after extending my search area a few times made the find.....
try these co-ordinates S36 47.0799 E174 51.3245...these digits can be rounded for older GPS devices.... to S36 47.800 E174 51.325....hope this helps....

Had a really lovely day geocaching around Rangitoto Island. Although I had been to Rangitoto before, this was the first time I'd been geocaching there. The day started off really foggy but once the sun burnt through the weather was on our side. Found as part of the Team Rangi group.
This cache took a bit longer than it should have with us having to spread out to track this one down. Perseverance won in the end. TFTC.

Set out today with a group of cachers on a midwinter trip to Rangitoto. Lava fields were navigated, caches were found, logs were signed, and a great day was had here, thanks to all involved!
After finding the related Letterbox cache, we headed onward to this one. It took a while of searching on both sides but the cache was finally located and signed off. TFTC

Headed over to Rangitoto with a group of cachers with the aim of finding many of the new caches on the island, particularly the ones along the lava fields. It was a slow journey over to Rangi through the thick fog, but once we arrived the fog started to clear and the weather warmed up nicely. It was an enjoyable day, with no injuries and many finds. Log signed as Team Rangi.
We all spread out over both sides of the track before someone finally called out that they'd found the cache.

I was sure I was right but should have left it to the others. The cache was eventually tracked down after all participants had spread out and started the search.
The much awaited (couple of weeks) trip to Rangitoto Island is here and we start off with a pre-departure event over on Downtown for sure at an ice-cream parlour to get festivities underway. I headed across to Downtown from Devonport and it is a really foggy day today, as well as the trip to the island also being real foggy and took a little while. 6 hours on this newbie island was enough to snag over 30 caches, spend some time in real good company with 'Team Rangi' (logs signed as), and head across the unstable and sharp lava fields. A good day and the sun burnt the fog off eventually, as well as my nose and forehead! Thanks to all COs for their placements and efforts here.

We were lucky enough to be able to book one of the DoC baches on the island for a couple of nights so we worked on finding the caches around the bach and on the way to the summit (as much as the reluctant caching teens would allow. After walking up the summit track, we came down the boardwalk and headed for this track on the way back down. A much different track from the summit one and we probably would not have looked at it if it wasn't for geocaching but we are pleased we did. Happy to make the find here.
I write "WRITE NOTE" because it's a time when we can't go on a long adventure, so I travel in the memories of my visits. That's why I'm only stretching the Travel Bug from the adventures in New Zealand. Writing "Found it" is no longer correct, but it wasn't today.
I am sending a beautiful greeting from the Czech Republic.

After a mission across the lava, it was nice to get in under the trees and with a nice soft path underfoot. We looked on one side of the path, then decided that was the wrong side, so looked on the other side and then decided that the wrong side was the wrong side, and found it on the other side. TFTC
Enjoying this track after the challenging terrain of the lava fields. Took a little bit of searching before we found it, but a nice hide, cheers
“Let’s go over to Rangitoto and play in lava field.” Someone said. “It’ll be fun!”
Well, yes it was loads of fun, but man oh man those lava stones are an experience!
Out with the group to Rangitoto today, for me it will all new for caches, so I had lots to collect, other less so, surprisingly didn’t have a single DNF on the island!
Good day, good company! Thanks to all the COs who placed caches here, especially the ones in all the sharp jagged scoria stones!
Specifics on this cache :
This soft path was our heaven after all those rocks.

For our morning walk we decided to get the caches up near the summit and then return for lunch before the forecasted rain. We just made it back before the forecasted rain but we did not make it back for lunch. Getting back at around 4pm. Did the summit ones then decided we would just get a few around the edge of the island. What an Epic walk. Have been to Rangitoto a number of times but this is the first since I started caching. Thanks for all the hides on this Island.
After finding my error with the data having a hint makes finding the caches a lot easier.

Over for two weeks and while the wife is at work for the first week I get to go play. A few people had recommended that I visit the island and I am glad I listened. I had a fantastic hike. I am also glad I brought my hiking boots (they got a nice clean when I declared them on the way in!) as I had hiked on lava previously in Hawaii, so I knew they would make life easier.
Had to get my Garmin out for this one as the phone was jumping all over the place. Found after a few minutes of searching and reading about a bearing in a previous log. TFTC.

A big day on Rangitoto for us!
We had tickets for the (cancelled ) Metallica concert but the airfares were paid for and accommodation booked, so we decided to still come up for a look around (& some caching). I'm the mad cacher, Not Manly Jack (my wife) somewhat more reluctant though she tolerates me. It! I mean she tolerates it!
Unfortunately we were travelling light, with only carry on bags, so my caching gear was still in Christchurch. All I had was a pen (+ a spare) and a pair of plastic tweezers. No spare logs, bags, or containers, so I couldn't help with maintenance on any caches that may have needed it, I'm afraid.
Apologies, too, for the cut & paste portion of my logs (for those COs who have multiple caches I've found), I'll add a personalised bit below.
This actually turned out to be a quick find. Lucky really as Not Manly Jack was by now, very twitchy about how long our return to the wharf would take. I started signing R3 & NMJ from here on!

#3,488: Dennis Smiley 1!
I came out to Rangitoto with my wife, GeoYoungling #3, and father-in-law today. Weather was changeable, but stayed nice for most of the day. We took the motorised tour from the dock area, and had some time to grab a couple of caches. Turned out that my GY#3 and I decided to walk down anyway, along a track I'd not taken before (this one), and so we had a nice long walk of it!
After a short search, GY#3 called out in glee "Found it!". All in good shape! I remember watching Dennis the Menace on TV when I was a kid. Poor Mr. Wilson...

After searching for 10min, I read through previous logs, which then had me searching on the East side of the track. Cache was then quickly found. It is about 4m off track and about 9m to the SE of GZ co-ords. This track is so good. Thanks for bringing me here.
Thanks **kiwicouple**

On our 45th day in New Zealand we stayed in Auckland. We took the ferry out to Rangitoto and had a look at this great volcano so close to the city. We had also time to look for some caches.
On our way down again we took this was and were looking for the caches here. Dennis I remember well, always loved this little boy! The box was a quick find in a nice location.

An unserem vorletzten Tag in Neuseeland wanderten wir auf Rangitoto Island auf den Gipfel. Rauf und runter nahmen wir verschiedene Routen, hoch den Main Track, hinab gings über den Wilson's Park Track. Beim Austieg waren einige vonMuggeln belagert. Auf dem Wilson waren wir alleine.
Gut gefunden. TFTC

This is a much nicer track back than the summit track, cool shade and only one muggle.
Find 6 of 19 on an epic 24km walk on Rangitoto Island. Wet weather was forecast but we went anyway and got lucky for the first three hours with just low cloud, then soaked for the next couple. Most finds were quick. The island is an amazing place - quite unique in our experience. Thanks to all the COs for placing and maintaining caches here.
Spent a while here, read the previous logs but misinterpreted the most helpful log regarding the side to be looking - to be precise, it's on the right hand side when heading north. The co-ords had us on the west side which is not the place to be looking.

A group visit by the Auckland Geocaching Meetup group, a nice overcast day in mid winter was perfect conditions for tackling Rangi. Picked up the ones on track that I hadn't grabbed on previous trips, overall about a 16km hike for the day. Lots of possible locations but we soon came up with the correct one. TFTC
Out with a few members of our meetup.com group for another ferry trip and a walk around an island. The day was slightly overcast, the temp was mild. We made good progress around the island. Our trip was just to pick up caches close to the trail. I got 4 caches today.
All caches were in good condition and we signed them meetup group

Out for a day of caching on Rangitoto, me and rusty. We hopped on the first boat and arrived here at 8am to the island and took the very last one back at 4pm, so all in all, we walked a solid 8 hours and 16km in beautiful weather! We’re not mucking around either, rusty wants to get as many caches as we can today for a goal of hers.
Came back to visit this one with rusty, we're doing well despite the legs feeling the pain!

Now this one turned out to be a little tricky, with the GPS pointing to the left (where the rocky cave is?). And by looking at the geo trails I am not alone. It was only after scrolling thru some previous logs about being on the wrong/opposite side that we concentrated our efforts on the right side (when walking towards the road) and the cache was soon found.
Thanks again kiwicouple for the hide.

Sunday trip to Rangitoto Island with companion of Jano216. Beautiful day on the island , blessed with good weather. We had pleasure to find several caches on the Island of Rangitoto this one was one of them. All caches found fairly quickly thanks to accurate coordinations and helpful hints. 16.2 km hike not too bad! Thanks for all placements on this interesting place ----- About this find -----> The longest hide here. Took as ages to locate it. Almost gave up when Jano216 had an idea to search on the other side of trail. That was it! Cache was in hand quick then. TFTC
Got up early this morning to meet Tramyard for our big trip at Rangitoto Island. The weather was perfect - in contrast to the previous days - so we could enjoyed awesome landscapes, beautiful views and, of course, a couple of nice and fairly hidden Geocaches.
That one was the hardest today, probably because we were looking at the wrong side for a long time. Changed it and found the Cache quick.
Thanks for hiding this one!

I have still not seen Rangitoto summit as we chose to visit Mr Wilsons' place from McKenzie Bay instead but I have not regrets on making that choice, it was simply beautiful heading down this track. Tftc!
We took a little while trying to find hint item. Our first choice proved right. Tftc
With the Planetary challenge currently on and the need to get a good number of caches to achieve all the souvenirs, a plan was made a while ago with DaffyNZ, to make an assault on Rangitoto Island today. Planning two weeks out, we hoped the weather would be good and thankfully today, is was just about perfect, except for the squally front that arrived just on ferry boarding time at 5:00pm.
Rangitoto was a place I had never been before, so I was keen to experience the unique geology and this caching game gave me a good reason to make the trip from up north. With DNZ’s partner along as well, we left before 5:00am to make sure of catching the 7:30 early ferry and once we set foot on the island, it was all go to find as many caches as possible during the day.
All up during the 9 hours before catching the last ferry back to Auckland, we clocked up over 33,000 steps for a distance of 22km, including almost 2km across jagged lava flows. We actively looked for 40 caches and managed to find 39 of them, with just one DNF, and this probably due to the rapidly approaching ferry departure time.
Thx to all the COs for placing and maintaining these caches and giving us an extra reason to make the journey to this neat place.
Heading back down the Wilson track before looping back up to the summit. Spent a few minutes looking on the GPS indicated side of the track without success, before reading some logs and changing our focus to the other side where the cache was soon found, all safe and secure.

(3051) Out with the cache hound and 0B80B8 for a days adventure, caching on Rangitoto Island. We clocked up over 20 km walking the tracks and collecting the caches. Thanks for placing the caches on such a beautiful and unusual landscape. Like other caches we started our hunt on the wrong side of the track.
A day out to rangitoto today with the aim of collecting as many of the caches as we can.enjoyed the walk to this cache and the fact it was shaded over.a nice easy find and no sharp rocks.
I liked this track as there were very few others about on it.... allows you to hear the birds singing! This was a quick find despite the tree cover. TFTC x

A return visit to Rangitoto Island was high on our list when planning this holiday in New Zealand and we had just as wonderful a time as on our first visit. Beautiful weather and views. We’ve walked this track before and loved it, so took it again today. Lots of birds and unusual plants. We searched on both sides of the track and Chris discovered the hiding place. SL. TFTC.
As it's been a while now since I finally qualified for all of the GIO series I thought it was about time I head back over there to see if I can turn the rest of the series into smiley faces. The initial plan was to head over with the family, but as the weather forecast didn't look great at all the plan was quickly upgraded to an island clean up attempt while the family stayed at Nana's!
The day turned out to be a great success, with the weather holding out til the last few hours on the island, and nearly all caches attempted found. One massive search which resulted in a DNF, took the last little bit of time needed to do the full loop and clean out the island. Oh well...I'm sure I'll be back another day.
Struggled to locate this one, as started off searching the wrong side of the track. With the weather gone to custard it the GPS wasn't a great help in narrowing down the right location. Ended up reading a few logs before spotting something in them that put me in the right spot. Still needed a few minutes of searching to find.
A big thanks for placing this cache!

Over on the island with a bunch of other cachers for the day. I teamed up with the Jags to do some of the tougher terrain caches. We parted ways here, briefly, so I could find the COs two trads along the Wilson Track. This trail is a lovely part of the Island, well worth the visit. Found this one on my way to the main trail, heading to the event at the summit. Took a few minutes to come up with this one. GPSr took awhile to settle down and it helped to read the cache page. Camo is peeling of the container, but otherwise fine. Cheers for the cache placement!
Followed what we thought was a geotrail, but succeeded only in stumbling around and gouging my hand on scoria. Then read the last few logs which suggested the other side of the track may be better. Indeed it was - found the correct spot that matched the hint straight away. TFTC.
A cast about in target area soon turned up a positive find and I was on my way to the summit. Tftc
This one gave us the most trouble today, Dennis the Menace indeed. I grew up with english comic books a treat purchase with pocket money on fish n chips Friday so am far more familiar with the english red and black clad miscreant from The Beano than this one. It's not the same without Gnasher.
We resorted to taking a look at a few logs and found a few cachers had had the same challenge that we had had, and that was looking on the wrong side of the track. Switched to the other side, ignoring the GPSr and that did the trick - back to back finds for geowife - good going.
Thanks for this cache.

The wife always said I should be called Dennis, as she thinks Im a menace sometimes so had to go for this cache even though Denis isn't my name. Nice to escape from the muggles and overhead shelter from the sun after a trek via the lighthouse route.

After going straight up the main track to the cone and crater we came down via Wilsons track as my husband had run this way a couple of weeks ago in a half marathon. After spending a bit of time checking under prominent overhanging rocks nearby well camoed cache was found under just a small overhanging rock (on an island of overhanging rocks) Great easter Monday on Rangitoto and very few muggles coming the way of Wilsons track. Island is covered in Tuis and we counted over 20 in one tree feeding on berries
The GPS originally took us to the wrong side of the track, but after looking through the logs we switched sides and soon found the cache. Nice camo, but cache was a bit wet.
Going for a walk around Rangitoto on a drizzly morning, looking for geocaches. My partner's persistence paid off, as I was ready to give up on this one. Found a long way from where we were originally looking, on the right side of the track when heading uphill.
Love the camo on this. This part of track easier walking. Left a toy camera. Tftc
Fefe.adrien and I waited for days the sun to go to Rangitoto with the ferry. We spent all this beautiful day on the island. We did all the loop track (along the beach, across lava fields, the summit, lava caves etc. ).
So, we found as many caches as possible during this time. Unfortunately it is not possible to write a different log for each cache but most of them were easy to find with good coordinates and helpful hints.
Once again, thanks to this awesome game we could explore and discover further...

After waiting a few days for the rain to stop, Ninalila and I finally got a good opportunity to go to Rangitoto Island during a sunny day.
As we have almost all the day, we decide to start by the track along the sea before going to the summit, then to the lava cave and finally going back to the boat.
It was an amazing day where we could see really interestin volcanic features such as volcanic bombs, lava flows, the crater...
And the cherry on the cacke, we saw a few saddlebacks. We didn't expect to see this bird so we were more than happy to see them Really cute bird
To avoid wasting a lot of time, we decided to not search caches with a DNF before us.
All the boxes were easy to find and well maintened.
Not always easy to walk on the basalt rocks, but we managed to reach each boxes

8th of 27 finds on a Rangitoto loop today. I spent a long time looking for this one, first on the wrong side of the track, and then on the right side, both quite unsuccessful. Checked the hint and tried to search everything similar in the area. I was almost ready to call it a DNF when I went back and checked a spot I had looked at before, and I spotted the container. I had actually moved the camouflage away and didn't see the container right behind it. Blends in well! Happy to find it after the long search. Thanks for the cache!
Came here on a day walk in perfect weather to explore some of the tracks around the island, I found this one surprisingly quickly given the previos DNFs on it. All in good condition - signed log, TFTC.
Searched for a while with this one but no luck. GPS wasnt being very helpful either.
What a nice hike to the top of the island and amazing views over the whole region. This was one of the caches we found on Rangitoto Island. TFTC!
Skipped the summit today and came down via Wilsons Park Track to get the caches hidden along it. Soon had the cache in hand here and I love this track. TFTC and thanks for bringing me this way.
As Flossy63 didn't find , I also didn't find this one. A while ago, I know, but dad didn't follow through with my finds (or DNF's), while I was out with Flossy63 and they were preparing for the big day in a couple of days time. Probably too many other things to think about.
A DNF for us, wish I had read the logs, I think we were on wrong side too, out for the day with kittycat432,
Our GPSr's were pointing to one side of the track, but thankfully we read the logs and decided to look on the other side first and ugnz quickly came up with the goods.
Out enjoying the grabone special to do some caching, quick find as per hint once on the right side of the track.
I headed out on this fine day for yet another visit to Rangitoto. My focus for the day was to pick up the newer caches on the Eastern side of Rangitoto and the Western side of Motutapu - in all a very long day on the islands, with lots of walking! After walking out to Emu Point on Motutapu then back again, I then hiked to the top of Rangitoto to pick up the new caches on Wilson's Park Track and make my way back down to the Wharf. I had noted previous logs about the cache being on the other side of the track from where the co-ordinates indicate, so I ignored the clear geo-trail and made a quick find of the cache opposite it! TFTC!

In Auckland for a few days work. I deliberately arranged to be here over the weekend to catch up with two of my kids studying at Auckland Uni, and to spend a day on Rangitoto. My intention was primarily to find a few more of the GLS series, but I left the info behind. Instead I chose to collect as many of the other caches as I could. This was the twentieth of 31 found today. It took awhile. Like others before me, I was searching on the wrong side of the track until I read previous logs. Cache soon found after that. Took GC. TFTC.

Spent some time inspecting all the likely spots on the wrong side of the track before finally crossing over to the other side and quickly spotting the cache! TFTC!
Rangitoto day trip with my dad visiting from Austria!
So sad we could not find this.
We searched everywhere and knowing that someone found it just 2 days before - we were hoping it be a relatively easy find.. but no - looked on both sides of the track, the hint was pretty straight forward but nothing....

[blue][size=1]On a holiday of a lifetime with Mr Crow (San Francisco, New Zealand and Sydney). Although the weather wasn't brilliant today it was our only opportunity to visit Rangitoto. A fantastic island - worth visiting whatever the weather! http://izziewhizzie.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/saturday-24th-october-craters-and-caves.html

Made our way up to this little group of caches from the light house and used the previous cachers coords and the cache was soon located. Was nice to recognise the cache container as a prize the CO's won at a skills day we held some time ago. Cache nice and dry and tucked away safely. Many thanks for placing this cache.
Out and about with Team Welsh - knocking off the caches on Rangi - lovely day for it. t4tc
Firstly thanks very much for the cache. Unfortunately if you have downloaded open source maps on your device you will find this cache on the opposite side of the trail to where the OSM map points you. I also found the following coordinates to be a little closer: S36 47.080, E174 51.326
First visit to New Zealand with Lorriebird. We met up with Agazo and took the ferry out to this island for the day. Had a great time hiking and exploring around the island. I enjoyed hiking this less-traveled trail. We searched on one side of the trail for a bit, then decided to try the other side and found it there. Thanks for the fun!
After going to the summit and having our lunch, we were happy to be finally heading downhill. (We need an emoticon showing a smiley wiping sweat from its forehead.) We decided to take this track instead of going toward the lighthouse. ZSteve and I followed our GPSr into the more difficult terrain while Lorriebird read a few logs and made the find on the other side of the track. TFTC.
While we enjoyed our day hiking around Rangitoto, we were too quickly running out of time before the last ferry of the day, so we had to choose one trail over the other. We wisely chose the 'Wilson' series to finish up our day. GPS pointed in one direction, but after a few mintues I decided to do a little log sleuthing and discovered it on the other side of the trail. Thanks for the smiley!
A trip to the island to try and collect some more of the caches that have been put in since out last trip. Quick find in an interesting area. TFTC
Today saw us heading over to Rangitoto Island with the 10 and 12 year old nieces to join us for some hiking around the island, complete with some geocaching of course!
Another quick find as we slowly begin our loop back to the ferry wharf. Thanks for the hide!
