This cache is no longer here.

While the cache is not here, the wall of lights display at the moment is quite impressive. We met a small group of French muggles enjoying the night here. Seems like the wall is getting quite well known with tourist's

No luck here.

Not sure your cache is still here. The spot I remember it being has fallen away. May need to check it out.

Found where it looks like it was but it wasn’t there Sad

This was a shame I could not find it as it quite a drive to get there. But the drive is worthwhile. What stunning cutting in the pumice and covered overhead by trees. Like driving down a tunnel. Well I parked near GZ and soon found a hole at head height that seemed promising but it was empty. Definitely dug out by hand. Checked all along on either side and across on other wall as well. Nothing else seemed as good as the first spot. Either muggled or I missed something it seems.

On our way to Masterton (4 hours away lol) and detoured to Kakahi. Nice area, beautiful layby but damp this time of year. Nice easy find thank you

Team SEAC had decided a few months ago to attempt the Tongariro Crossing. Not JUST because there were caches here but to get us all out and about.

Yesterday we Conquered the crossing. Today was dedicated to caching in the National Park and surrounding area.

All logs signed with Team SEAC to save log paper.

Mr HeMaLuDy and Purply completed the Tongariro Crossing yesterday as part of a group from Team SEAC. Unfortunately Mrs. HeMaLuDy and Darthcacher1 were unable to do the crossing but plan on attempting it at a later date. Today was booked as a reserve day but luckily was not needed. So instead the members of the group went in several directions. Six of us decided to go caching to stretch our legs so we began with the local caches then headed north from National Park. This was a nice quick find and we then carried on down the cutting to check out the river. What a beautiful place. We also came back later in then evening with more of our group to enjoy the glow worms. Awesome spot. Signed Team SEAC to save space on the log. TFTC

A few of the Team SEAC crew were in town to complete the Tongariro Alpine crossing which we successfully managed yesterday - woop woop. The plan for today was to get out and stretch a little and of course find some caches.

This place is actually magical. As we drove down the sun was peeking through the trees and made this really ethereal look. Then we get to the water and that was stunning. One of the people that came along on this trip is not a cacher and had stayed back at the house to chill today but he is a photograper so we hatched a plan to come back at night to look at the glow worms and hopefully take some pics too. Of course this was a completely different experience at night but just as awesome as the day.

Its caches like this that keep me geocaching because we definitely would not have found this spot if not for the cache.

Thanks for the cache which we found easily during daylight. A favourite point for the great spot - LOVED IT!

27-Feb-21
In town with my good friends from Team Seac to do the Tongariro Crossing. We did the crossing on the Friday, so to relax the following day we went caching of course. So we explored the local areas.

We loved this one. We luckily found the cache quickly. Then we traveled to the end of the road and had a look at the rest area. We liked it so much we came back that night to look at the glow worms. Was one of the highlights of our trip. The downside to it was we overheard some people talking about a lockdown, so they filled us in.

Log was signed Team Seac or Seac to save room on the logs.

Gets a fav point from me

The day after our group from Auckland had completed the Tongariro Crossing, and were on a bit of a high, decided to take a look around the area at some local caches, not knowing local would extend to Taumarunui....needed to be back in National Park to sort out food for dinner, so off we went....

After seeing this during the day, we just had to return after dark to experience the amazing glow worms that lit up these walls ...... just amazing.

Signed in as SEAC to save log book space...

Very difficult to find in the dark

My GPS was pointing to a likely hidey hole but it was empty.

Found with our 4 and 7 y.o. Thank you jphunt2 for making us come here. We arrived at 8pm on a crispy (2*C) winter's night. Milky way, stars and planets above us. No moon light, no light pollution, stunning. We parked at the gumtree and we walked into the "canyon" on pitch black, without our phones, so we didn't actually look for the cache to start with, instead we marvelled at the glowworms mingling with the stars. Absolutely magical and awesome spectacle! We only started looking for the cache after our fingers froze, and found it eventually in the dark. Super fun cache, we'll come back during the day too another time. A favourite point from us. Thank you.

I was expecting a reasonably quick find here but that wasn't my experience. After stopping the car and having a look around I couldn't spot the cache hide. My hunting was then interrupted by a car wanting to pass so I headed to the end of the road and then made my way pass GZ and parked the car near the gum tree. I walked back into the cutting and still struggled to located the cache. Finally I managed to spot something and sure enough it was the cache hide. Boy, it was hidden well! I guess my search was also hampered as I was very reluctant to disturb the fragile ecosystem that exists here.

I tried to figure a way where I could've visited this at night but unfortunately couldn't make that happen. It would be amazing to visit at night. Thanks for putting a cache here.

Thanks! Lovely glow worm gem, must go when it is dark time:)

09-Mar-19
We came here via Whakapapa Road (the gravel road) and drove right down to the river. There were plenty of muggles down by the river but none up by the cache. After driving back through the cutting we parked near the gum tree and walked to GZ for a reasonably quick find. TFTC.

What an awesome spot!! I never expected to find a container that large!! I also had a good chat with the store owner, who is the original owner's son (and most likely has grandkids of his own now, if not greatgrandkids). And got an ice cream, too early in the day lol! TFTC!!

Found it by using clue and paced it out. Didn't see the trackable but had to hurry as lights were coming down the road. Did find a pathtag though which was rather exciting. The glow worms were awesome. TFTC

Spent 30 min but no success which was a bit of a surprise given the size of the cache container. GPS led us to a likely looking hint object but no luck and even trying further along did not help.

We were pleased to come by this cache - we are staying at the local campsite and were directed to see these hidden creatures. On this cold night the wall of light was brightly lit with them. Glad there happened to be a cache here and what a good spot it is! We also happened to have a hidden creatures TB to drop of and join them all.

Enjoyed this little trip and cache soon located on the way back out. TFTC!

An interesting feature to drive through, although a somewhat crazy location for a cache. We stopped our car there, and hoped there wouldn't be any other traffic.Fortunately it didn't take too long to find the cache, although it would have been faster if we had fully read the description. TFTC

I was one of a group of motivated Hamiltonian Geocachers (Cats&Dragons, HKCB & 11hpg11) who decided to head to Mount Ruapehu to complete the LOTR series of caches, along with some other geocaches in the area. This big day necessitated leaving Hamilton at 4am. We had prearranged to meet Tufty at 7am who we met up with in one of the lower car parks. Having two vehicles was fantastic and meant we didn’t have to keep backtracking and always seemed to be walking downhill. We signed the logs today WOAC which I think was decided was for Waikato Old Age Geocachers.

Even though the weather was pretty poor with steady rain for the first half of the day we still had a great time. I really enjoyed the walks which were varied and showed off the uniqueness of this part of the country. The company was great, it was my first time out with Tufty and really enjoyed getting to know him. There were certainly plenty of spots which reminded me of scenes from the Lord of the Ring’s films. A big thank you to the cache owners for taking the time to place all the geocaches we found today. We rarely had to look long before making a find thanks to accurate coordinates, sensible hides and descriptive hints.

We ended up here after taking a 'little detour' on our way home. Really interesting location which I bet looks really cool at night. Future finders-be sure to say hi to the Weta guarding the cache.

Another HOAC mission down to the Central Plateau for the LOTR trail and anything else nearby, involving Cats&Dragons, Iammrwalker, 11HPG11 and myself, but this time Tufty tagged along too. With the new member and us all being from the Waikato the logs were all signed WOAC (Waikato Old Age Caches).

An early start from Hamilton, after a small detour to pick up a late sleeper, meant we were leaving a little after 4am. With this being the only weekend we could do this trail meant we had to dress for the weather and a few more layers were thrown on. After meeting Tufty at the arranged meeting point at 7am a quick plan was made for the day and those extra layers put on.

It was a fantastic day out even though the weather wasn't great, but it did clear up throughout the day. A massive thanks to all the CO's for the placements and for showing us more of this awesome place. All up just over 70 finds for the day and the LOTR series completed all in one day!

Heading back home now after completeing the LOTR series and a few others up the mountain. However there is always time for a few more caches, so grabbed a few on the way home that were close. Suggest to the others we should go for these caches out here as it was a fairly interesting spot. Getting abit tired at this stage so we struggled with the instructions for a little bit before we worked out what we needed to do as the hint confused us. No trouble finding once in the right spot, (where the GPS was pointing us. HPG wasn't to keen on the cache gaurdian. Find #71 for the day.

01-Oct-16
This was the start of a great day caching with friends.

Up at 3.30am leaving home at 4.00 for a great drive down here, 70 caches for the day on the mountain. So in the company iammrwalker, HKCB & 11HPG11 (members of HOAC) we set off to the mountain. It was with great interest that we had been keeping a very close eye on the weather for the past week but of all days I think we could have looked at this appeared about the best.

Although the weather may not have been the best, being keen trampers we were decked out appropriately for just about every eventuality that the conditions may throw at us. Having access to the two vehicles defiantly made the task all that much easier (ferrying of parties between start and end of tracks). So for the day we managed to cover 460 kms (approx 23 kms tramping) and locate approximately 70 caches. A great way to being the weekend and still made it home by 7.30 pm.

Having completed the upper part of the Bruce Road and the LOTR series we collected these on the way out and before we headed back north and Home.

Thanks for the cache, Thanks for the placement

This one had been on my radar for a wee while now, been in the area a few times over the last few months but haven't had the time to attack these trails. When a plan was hatched with some other Hamilton cachers to get them all done in one day, I was a little apprehensive but I still said yes! So today our team consisted of Cats&Dragons, Iammrwalker, HKCB and Tufty and we signed the logs as WOAC to save room.

I almost missed today altogether when my alarm decided not to wake me at 3.20am for a 4am departure but luckily I got a phone call to awaken me from my slumber and it was off on the road toward the mountain. Good to catch up and hear the latest caching tales. The weather wasn't looking the greatest but nothing to put us off, just meant a few more layers of clothing. It was great to see Tufty at 7am at the trail ready to go, not put off by the rain. Having two vehicles also made it a lot easier and cut a few kms off the days total.

All in all another fantastic day out with friends, a few caches collected, a fair few kms walked and home by 7.30pm... and I think I was asleep by 8pm! Many thanks to all the cache owners who tempted us out into the wild!

An interesting little spot that felt like we were well and truely off the beaten track. A very interesting road indeed! Would be amazing at night time I bet. I may have shrieked a little when I saw the weta hiding next to the cache... glad that others were there to do the signing!

9.35am - Soon as I read about this one knew where we had to go, thought as traffic was fairly light this was going to be a park and grab but how wrong was I. Stopped at GZ then here comes a vehicle so drove off and returned and able to locate cache. SLTFTC

Dot Day... A day trip to Wanganui. When Gap (of Fap and Gap) told me he was going to the powerboat races, I knew today's dot would be history...

Another 'recent' placement since our visit at the beginning of the year. The streets of Kakahi are still a jumbled mess... It took us a few minutes to recall directions. But once we got onto the right road, we were quickly on track. We took some time to locate ground zone. Since it was quiet, we figured we could do a park and grab... But wouldn't you know it? Another vehicle arrived. Once that car moved on, we re-set and Gap had this one in hand soon enough. TFTC.

Walked passed it on the way down but when we turned around it was immediately obvious. Unfortunately the bank at GZ has slipped away and the cache was clinging by a thread. We moved it very slightly to hide it from view a little better but the CO will probably need to visit and make it more secure. We have been here at night and the glow worm show is very spectacular - and VERY popular. The little one way road was chocka the night we visited. TFTC

28-Apr-15
After the rain last night, we took a drive this morning to visit this favourite place and hopefully find a cache. Perhaps it was just as well we didn't come last night in the dark as there was a tide-mark across the road-end showing where the river had risen, the long blades of grass were all flattened in one direction and it was obvious where the water had rushed across the banks , even stranding a tiny rainbow trout on the roadside grass. The long tunnel was looking fresh and green after the rain. We relied on our GPS and stopped quickly to find the cache, and discovered it was right beside us, signed the logbook as FTF and swapped a treasure, we were hurrying and hoping no-one would come driving along the narrow tunnel. What an awesome sight this glow worm tunnel must be at night, we really must come back to see it. Thanks for bringing us back here again, TFTC.
