I was heading up to Dimboola for a CITO today and did not realise it had been cancelled Friday evening until I was checking what time it was planning on starting. It was cancelled due to the heat and the total fire ban as well.It was going to be hot picking up rubbish so it was for the best.I was in Stawell at the time and as I was in no hurry to get there now I decided to do a couple around there first before heading to Dimboola to do the newish trads up there.I noticed a multi on my map and after visiting the WPs I ended up here.I soon realised that there was another multi and earthcache here as well. The places geocaching takes you.I have been to his lookout and now his cave. The paintings look great.Answers have been sent to the CO.Thanks TheJackoCrew TFTC.
This was the highlight of my annual trip to Halls Gap. While most of our group were doing Run the Gap, I drove the 30mins over here on my own to do this EC and multi. The rock art was so visually compelling and important to see. I never would've known about, or come here, if not for geocaching. A favourite for sure.
Great place to visit and learn about the history of the First Australian whose land it is.
**Wat is het leven toch mooi **
We have a roadtrip through Australia and we also did some geocaching. We have been to very beautiful places that we would not have seen without geocaching.
Very high on our wish list was the BGT and we successfully visited all of them. We thought Ballarat was a great and beautiful place, with a lot of history and a lot of geocaches.
We often log with our initals TGM (Team_Geo-Meijer)
Greetings from the Netherlands.

On our travels we stopped to do the fabulous earth cache, such an interesting place and fascinating history we are glad we took the time to come here, thanks for placing it
Wonderful place spoiled by a dead roo in the car park. Hopefully the council clear it soon.TFTC.
I was very excited to make the trip up here today and do this cache. It was actually the sole purpose for my trip. So happy to have seen it. Thank you for placing this EC here for us. Fav added.
Found on the second day of a somewhat impromptu solo caching and camping trip to Victoria from Adelaide.
I had planned to spend a week travelling, caching and camping along the Great Ocean Road, but my travelling companion had to postpone it due to other commitments. I was still keen to go away somewhere this week as well, so decided to head to the western part of the state on my own.
I created a bit of a 'menu' of specific caches of interest in the broad area that I might be in before I left home, including this one, and just pottered along fairly casually, taking in the sights and grabbing what I could along the way.
After camping nearby last night, I quite enjoyed wandering around this area early this morning and the opportunity to view the art in the cave.
Thanks Jacko83 for an interesting earthcache.

On our first family camping trip in 2 years and this was a lovely place to visit on our way home between misty rain squalls. This is quite a powerful place, we really appreciated the time spent wandering around the area just absorbing the surrounds. Answers sent to CO. Thank you for the cache.

Jenno3, kenbryl and I headed up this way this morning to explore the area and find a few caches. This was first on our list. Thanks for highlighting the cave with your EC. Tftc

An interesting place however I think the fence surround could be improved, as it detracts from special place this is. TFTC
This was our third Earthcache for the day, and we were able to complete a Multi and the Trad that are at this location. It was also an awesome place for our picnic lunch. I don't recall ever seeing an indigenous artwork like this in Victoria before, and it is such a great example. We love Earthcaches because they teach us interesting things about the geological environment we live in and take us to interesting places to see things that most other people will never realise exist. Thank you, Jacko83, for giving the time and effort to create this Earthcache. An FP from us as we would never have come here had it not been for this Earthcache. P.S. we took a great photo of the painting, but you really should go and see it for yourself.
Hard to answer questions at site with a 7 yo itching to go climbing the rocks behind me. Mum, muuuuuummm! Finally got here today after multiple stops at caches and alpaca farm!
Headed out this way today to escape the rain. It was much drier here than at Halls Gap! This was an interesting spot! Thanks for setting up this earthcache.

TFTC. Continuing our camping stopover in Ararat, today we ventured out towards Stawell. We started the day with a quick easy find. At Petticoat Gully, just outside Ararat we had three dnfs in a row. The day got better. 16 caches and 3dnfs. Not a bad haul for the day. We saw some interesting sights and places we would not visit without caching.
Thanks for bringing us here Jacko83 for an interesting earth cache and multi.

This was very interesting, I looked to bring my family here and show them this amazing rock, and rock art.
Find #267 on 29/6/20 nice earthcache and good since I haven't done one since November last year! Answers sent TFTC Jacko83
I love this place very much. I have been coming here since I was a child. No success with the nearby multi, but happy to record a find with this Earth cache.
A late afternoon visit to this area as we were on a hunt for a different cache and this EC and a multi popped up on the map.
A spectacular area to visit and by chance the second cache I've done today that involved Aboriginal artwork, and only my 3rd one ever ( that I remember!)
Answers sent to CO as required, the geodaughter and myself really enjoyed our visit and exploring here today, a FP from us!

Not sure about question 1. I think we got the right answer. Awesome place to visit anyway. TFTC
what an interesting spot. It was super windy today but we braved the weather to come check this out. We’re really glad we did. Thanks for bringing us to this amazing spot.
Wow, what a cool location this is, the aboriginal artwork amongst the awesome granite formations in the hills what better place for us to visit today as we cache around the Stawell area. The rain had disappeared from the day before leaving us with blue skies, making for perfect conditions to go for a walk up into the Black Range Reserve.
Photos were taken and theories discussed for this earthcache before continuing on to the next cache.
Thanks Jacko83 for bringing us here to witness the only known Bunjil rock art painting [^]

This morning I got up nice and early and headed down to go for a walk up here and have a look at the Bunjil artwork. It was quite interesting and always wonder how they stumbled across such and area, they must of lived it tough back in those days too.
All the caches were easily found and are in good condition.

Mr Riddell has been here before a long time ago when he used to go hot air ballooning out of Stawell and the surrounding district.

Caching has actually changed the way i see the land and the country. I’d always thought I was nature friendly and had respect for it but I don’t think I’d ever really understood spiritual connection to the land. Being out in the High country earlier this year changed that in one weekend. I finally understood the meaning that places have and how much of our history they contain. People come and go but the land is always there with such a rich story and identity of its own. It was a real epiphany for me. I’m really grateful to have had this realisation and to feel this new connection with the land. Often when in the midst of city life I start thinking about all the places I’ve seen over the last six months caching and it’s peaceful knowing these places are always there to go back to. I am looking forward to many more adventures ahead exploring our beautiful country. Overseas trips are on hold for now. There’s a lot of history and amazing spots to see right on our doorstep. To see a drawing like that etched into a wall for thousands of years is pretty telling about how many stories our land does hold and it’s so sad that so much of that has been lost.
Thanks for the earth cache Jacko83.

Answers sent. Easy walk to the shelter and a lovely walk around the area after viewing the art here. TFTC.
Finally got around to visiting the cave, now that T is old enough to appreciate it. We all enjoyed the short stroll, signing the visitors book, beautiful views & well preserved art.
thank you for this cache at this very special place. i love the Grampians and the history about indigenous people over there
Being the first time in Australia, Jobär and me, we had to decide about geocaching or looking for some touristic spots (and even sometimes both at the same time). We were prepared at least for the grandfathers of a cache which had to be done to fill our matrix.
I was very keen on visiting The Grampians and find some aboriginal rock art. So after arriving in Halls Gap we decided to visit Bunjil today. What a great place. Thanks for bringing us here and many greetings from Germany.

On our tour with a campervan through southeast of Australia minebine and me today made a trip from our campground in Halls Gap. We first visited Bunjil's Cave. That was a nice walk to the cave pictures.

One of us had the opportunity to visit this site today. Whilst no physical cache finds were made, I did take note of the geological and art features. It was rather a hot day with flies and cicadas dominating the air. I was very pleased to say "hi" to a stumpy tail lizard!
Thanks Jacko83 for the tempting caches in the region. Our team is hoping to return undisturbed and with more time!

1. Bunjils cave is within a large granite boulder. What has caused the unique shapes of Bunjils cave and other surrounding boulders? Is there evidence in the area of this process still occuring?
Well rather than retype it im just gonna copy what you said above. Pretty much thermal cracking and water and wind erosion.
As the granite becomes exposed, water containing weak plant acids seeps into the cracks. It eats away at the minerals, turning the surface granite into gravels and clay. Thin layers of loose material start coming off in a process called exfoliation.
Water and wind erosion now takes away the surrounding gravel and soil, and contributes to further rounding.
Some of the cracking seems quite rough. Not smoothed over. So I guess the rock is still breaking down.
2. What did examination of the rock art pigmets tell us they were painted with?
Traditional Clay ochers and then parts were repainted by the 'whitefella' later on lol
TFTC!!! Once again this was a great spot and we want more!!! Cant get enough of this!

On our way back from the Grampians we made a stop at Bunjils Cave. Interestingly we were the only visitors this morning. We not only admired the paintings but also the great landscape. And thanks to this Earth Cache we now know how these rock formations have been created, Thank you very much for this cache and greetings from Swiss geocachers.

We were supposed to head off to the COs new EC at boronia peak. But the weather wasn't looking promising so we decided to go find answers to this EC. All answers sought and just as we were making our way to the nearby trad, I was told that it's now or never for the FTF on EC !

A bit closer to home today, although a locked gate and Private Property sign meant that we had to go around rather than over the range.
After a quick pause at the sign in the carpark to grab the answers for the multi, we wandered up past the art site, but other than admiring the painting, we left the answers for the return trip.
On our way back down, with the questions in our heads, looking at the boulders along the way we stopped and sat down to check out the art and to make sure we had the answers sorted.
Sad to see this art needs protecting from idiots, but at least it should now be safe. The presence of such significant art certainly makes the whole area feel special and you do get the feeling Bunjil is up there watching (no visible eagles today though).
Thanks for the EC here today Jacko !

Found and appreciated this piece of indigenous history. Saw the video story of Bunjil at Brambuk at Halls Gap, so its good to tie it all together.
Tftc. Out on a road trip circuit from Halls Gap via Pomonal winery and McMurties Glass blowing. Off to Stawell next then returning via Zumsteins and The Balconies at sunset. Nice spot for an earth cache.
Had this place to myself so I had a good look around + the other caches

What a beautiful place it is here and a shame that we need to fence of the area so the cretins in this world don't damage it further.

Up in the Grampians for a memorable day of caching venturing high, under and through the Grampians to some amazing locations with Simsfamily and Neville devil.
On the return journey we took a detour to grab a few more caches here before calling it a day.
What an awesome location with amazing cultural history.
Being here at sunset changed the colours of the rocks which awesome to sit and watch.

Found this by accident on the way from Halls gap to Lake Fyans. Didn't realise Stawell was so close so decided to head there for some supplies. Saw the sign for Bunjils Cave... any respectable Victorian geocacher would have to get this one wouldn't they.
Found this absolutely ages ago but forgot to log it. I really enjoyed this place even though it was rather wet and soggy at the time. Thanks Jacko83
Quick visit whilst hunting down another cache. Lovely area, interesting painting. The fencing around seems kinda harsh, but I guess it's required to preserve it. Funny how a painting can survive for thousands of years, but needs a prison like fence to get it through the past 50 years. Weird!
Anyway, submitted answers, thanks for such a prompt reply.

This was my second time here, and I find this an interesting contrast to the Grampians nearby. In particular, the granite in the area is quite a change from the mostly sandstone Grampians. I also like seeing rock art that actually looks like something more than just a hand print...
Thanks for the cache.
Thanks for the cache.
Amazing the painting has survived so long. An interesting spot and thanks for the information. A bit hot today for this one. TFTC Access road was very bumpy, almost 4WD quality.
Spent last weekend camping in the Grampians. Had already stayed there the past 3 years in a row so had quite a few cache in the area but set myself a target of 25 sneaky cache without disrupting the family too much. We did actually end up spending one day joining the dots (cache) on the map to get us to a few special places including 4 Earthcache. Had a great weekend, saw Roos, Echidna, Blue tongues, Rock Wallabies, Brown Snake, Emus and....... I think that is it. Love this part of teh world, thanks for making the excuse for me to come back. Today we visit this EC. It was only a short visit, because rain started when we arrived here. Good to see that the paintings are well protected and thanks to the Aboriginal People that they allow us to see one of these cultural places.
Our last stop for the afternoon was to visit the painting here. It kind of loses it's magic with the big metal cage around it though.
Thanks for bringing us to this piece of history; ancient as it is.

What a great place for an earthcache! Visited with chooknchunk on an impromptu caching trip that started in Mt Cole and Ararat but then the decision to target some quality caches was made and here we are.

With Wozzle68, we started today with the aim to get one cache close to home for International Geocaching Day. But one thing led to another and we found ourselves travelling out to Bunjil's Cave for the day. So love impromptu caching. Especially when a location like this is the destination. The weather gods smiled on us too, which was a bonus considering the forecast was for snow. We really enjoyed visiting the rock art, and then exploring the area via the other caches. A fantastic day full of great memories! Thank you Jacko83.
Found on our way to Halls Gap for an weekend away. After completing the nearby multi we made our way back down to the cave to admire the artwork. Its amazing to see it still here. Answers have been lodged with CO. Many thanks for the EC jacko83. +1 Fav Points from us today.
Staying at nearby Lake Fyans with hubby and the kids for the long weekend and a cache or two was in order! OMG! What an amazing place. Adding a fav for sure. There is just so much history in this country and thanks to geocaching I'm learning so much. A truly inspiring place. Thanks for bringing us here. Answers emailed and approved
While in the area, we stopped to explore this amazing place, the cave it fascinating the youngest team member loved to see it, and had fun around the rocks too, Answers sent to CO, We are looking forward to being able to return and explore more (and also complete to multi and traditional too) Thanks Jacko83 for the interesting cache and fun.
Doctor Owl and sushilord are off on a long weekend trip to find some quality caches in Mexico. We suffered the laughs, joys and frustrations normally experienced on a caching trip and bonded as geobrother and geosister.
An interesting site with geological and Aboriginal points of significance. As Dr Owl says there was lots of discussion about the earth cache and the paintings

Owl had run away from home to go caching with Sushilord for a few days. They were keen to concentrate on interesting puzzles, earthcaches and multis and this was the first cache in that direction. An interesting site that generated much discussion, but the final answers have been sent to the CO for approval, with a favourite point as a bribe.
Really interesting place ! I think it's amazing that rock art has lasted all of these years!
Our first official Earth Cache has now been logged!
Woohoo!
We came for the multi (DNF), ended up doing the traditional, and also having to take shelter in a little cave while the rain past.

A awesome location visited on a wet and windy day. Awesome to see the rock art and to learn about its meaning.
Nice walk and nice to see a un-vandalised cultural site still a shame it has to be fenched up but guess it's better then letting it easily get vandalised

Heading to Hall's Gap for school camp, I was delighted to find out we would be heading to Bunjil's Cave on the way. Leading 100 grade 4 students would mean I wouldn't be able to check out anymore of the caches in this reserve, just a sneaky earthcache to add to the list... Great to see the painting still intact and I was able to learn more about the Aboriginal mythology over the next couple of days whilst at camp. They sure had some crazy ideas! Came out to check this area out and grab a few caches while on lunch break! I'm working in Stawell for a while, and today's the last day I'm here. What an awesome place, I've never been here before and probably would never have visited if not for GeoCaching. A nicely preserved rock painting and some good climbing for the kids to do here. Will definitely be back!
