We tried last night and found a few of the fire tacks - today we went back for a look in the daylight, its a tricky slope and things are becoming very overgrown - its been a long time since it was legitimately found - could we have a check please.

Day thirty four of our epic New Zealand Adventure with The Morris.Wandering around Napier today, a few AdLab stages and a few caches.Just checking out the Art Deco town.A slightly cloudy day, but nice caching weather. There seems to be quite a few fire tacks missing, but we found a few and the triple that makes up the end.Unfortunately we found nothing after that, no twin set, no cache.Came back the next morning for another look, but a DNF for us.Thanks, Robmc.

This geocacher reported that the cache might be missing.

Thought it would be a fun after dinner activity while we're visiting Napier. Like others, had some trouble finding the markets - spotted one and logic'ed our way before finding the three marker. Gosh you wouldn't wanna try this after rain - the scramble would be treacherous! Searched in vain for the final 2-marker, then read the logs. Hunted high and low with 10m uphill from that 3-marker tree for quite a while, looking at old photos for assistance but had to flag it. I suspect it's well overgrown given it was last found a few years ago. Could be worth checking up on?

19-Jul-22
Really hard to find the first firefly but once we did we could follow the path to the tree with three (used a headlamp)
Went right off track after that and walked circles until we backtracked to the tree, searched around the ground on the hilside and found it Yay!!

06-Jul-22
Couldn't find the last two markers but came back the next day and found it within 4m of the 3 markers. Thanks!

Found with yeetrees and my favourite chicken. Puffed our way around the trail last night with enough torch power to blind a charging rhino. Fortunately we didn't meet any rhinos. Some of the tacks were quite faded, or perhaps just blinded. Eventually located the three stars but no sign of the last two. Scouted around for quite a while and after reading previous logs latched on to what we considered a likely hiding spot but came up empty handed. Decided to return in daylight and spotted something immediately. Business completed little blue hen collected 20,000 acorns on the way back to the car. Tftcsl

22-May-22
No joy in the dark but a quick find in the daylight knowing where the three tacks were. Gathered a lot less acorns than bkj97 mentioned. T4tcsl

I'm needing a number of official night caches for a challenge so picking up as many as I can on this trip. I didnt see the 2 tacks together but followed the tacks to the 3. I have no idea how long I spent from there first trying to find the other 2 tacks and then having read the previous logs searched every likely hiding place within 10 metres of the tree but came up empty handed. Eventually I text the previous finder for a tip, the reply came back after I'd left so back I went and had it within seconds. I must have just about stood on it earlier. Thanks for the cache nickhbnz

It had been a long day with a lot of DNFs so I was a bit sceptical about trying for this one. But it was way past sunset and I am wanting some night caches for a challenge I'm working on so thought I'd have a go. I parked in the near empty carpark and headed on up. Came to a junction and wasn't sure which path to take - managed to make the right choice because the line of lights soon appeared. I even saw the tree with 2 (I think) but didn't stop for a look. Followed the path to the tree with the three - I had read previous logs so knew the cache was achievable from there. Saw a little something quite close and on inspection there was the cache - wasn't expecting that. Left here feeling very happy thanks nickhbnz. Have a favourite for a nice wee night trail. One of the caches I particularly wanted to target on this trip - I love night caches! An interesting trial this. Yes, trial, not trail. I am sure I missed a number of fire tacks, I only saw three, maybe four, before I hit the tree with three. I noticed the tacks were aligned to return minimum light, maybe that is why I missed some. Anyway, I got to the three okay... and then my torch died. No worries, I have spare batteries, and a spare torch. (and the spare torch is possibly better than the one I am using, which is a seriously good torch!). Rummage through the cache kit. Darn Both batteries and spare torch are in the car. Down the trail to the car, collect both, back to the tree. Now that I have light I rummaged far and wide hunting for the two fire tacks. Eventually, like others, I simply stumbled onto the cache. Examining the area around I concluded that the firetacks are definately missing, so in lieu of these look for the cache uphill, less than 10m from the tree.

Okay the tail has problems, but it is still a night cache, and the container is dry and big enough for trinkets, so it gets a favourite. Well done.

I was supposed to go to the mega. Which got postponed, so I cancelled my arrangements, but labour weekend is still a three day holiday... but car hire was too expansive. So I decided to make it this weekend for a road trip to Napier, to mop up the TM- and PW- GTs there.

With (Mr) Davidson Clan, Gap (of Fap and Gap), and Philip.Perry. This line up was stitched together last night, just in time for our 4AM departure from Rotorua… We have planned another blitz of Napier caches. This should seriously tidy our geomap…

We debated whether or not broad daylight would be the best time to tackle this night cache. Although we had the company of a former finder, his memory was slightly foggy… We passed the memorial to “Boy”, but didn’t find any fire tacks until we saw three together… Was this where we were to leave the trail? After a bit of scrambling around, our search came to an abrupt end. We decided to retrace our steps and pretty much stumbled onto the cache. Thanks nickhbnz. TFTP and TFTC.

bit of late planning for another attack on Napier.
squirrel nutcase and myself where going back today to see if we could collect the caches we missed on our last trip.
this time we had the pleasure of Bruce ( Davidson clan ) and Philip Perry, coming with us.
we will have to return another day as we missed a few. still a great day.
thought we should try this one in the daylight. you never know might get lucky.
wondered aimlessly up the pathway than spotted 3 fire tacks.
could we be near? one of the team spotted something a little out of place.
cache in hand ,so can be done in daylight.

Found while working off our Lonestar dinner with the geokids. It was a cool experience for miss's 5 and 7. Completely missed the swap container though, obviously picked up the trail after that! Return2nai ventured to find the final leaving us on the path to chat to muggles waking their dog late! After quite a scrabble the cache was located. TFTC!

The ladies from rattll and watcache decided a girly weekend in the Hawkes Bay was in order, so left the boys a list of chores, packed their bags and headed off for a weekend of frivolity and mischief.
We were surprised to find the Hawkes Bay was remarkably quiet, especially considering it was the last few days of the school holidays. However, the exception was the night club that was next door to our room at the backpackers, that provided us with a free live band that played predominantly loud reggae music until the wee hours of the morning. Too old to 'bop' the night away? Apparently not! Mrs watcache however can sleep through anything!!!

This night cache wasn't too far from where we were staying, so about 7ish, after we'd had some dinner, we headed for here.
We initially went the wrong way but still managed to spot the tacks on the back of the tree's, but after a bit we decided to turn around and follow them back until the tree with the 3 tacks was spotted. We followed instructions but couldn't find the 2 tacks anywhere so just started a random search. After about 30 minutes of scrambling around in the dark and our PAF option not helping much we reluctantly had to call it a day - defeated!
Once tucked up in the warm, we went through the previous logs and photo's and saw something of interest so decided we'd give it a 5 minute look in the morning , and what do you know, we literally saw it sticking out of it's hide as we approached. Maybe we'd disturbed it last night??? Anyway we were very happy to finally finish this one off.
Thanks for the adventure Nickhbnz

Spotted the cache little after looking hard for the two markers! Phew!
Tricky in the daytime but doable

04-Apr-21
Great adventure. Some treasure left behind

21-Mar-21
Found it, near the 3 fire tacks (couldn’t find the pair as suggested) residents near the 3 fire tacks.

07-Mar-20
Couldn’t find any of the tacks, all the lights around the park were too bright to see which path to take, tacks weren’t reflective

17-Dec-19
Got to the final three but couldn't spot the last two. Had fun though.

13-Nov-19
A well-deserved little meal at the nearby Indian restaurant. It is now dark. It's time to go in quest of this cache.
No worries to find it by following the fireflies.

My first night cache! Spied this one on a previous trip to Napier but wasn’t keen to do it on my own. So this time with muggle hubby in tow I couldn’t not! We set off with only our mobile phone torches and are pretty sure we did it backwards with heading down the wrong path to start with! But we found it . Muggle hubby enjoyed it saying it’s the best one he’s done yet so I will give it a fav for that. TFTC

Went to replace this cache, but it is still there and in place.

#916. Day and night 2 of a mini Hawke’s Bay holiday. I had targetted this cache before leaving home, as I had previously only done one night cache before. As soon as it was dark enough, off we set, up the track looking for the tacks, shining the torch up the trees, and finding the trail relatively easy to traverse, if a little steep at times. But up we went, and yes, there was the three-tack tree! And yep, above it the two tacks I was looking for. But like Mar1sa before me, no cache. There appears to be some damage around GZ, a bit of bark lying below the tacks, but no sign of where the cache should be. So, a photo log herewith, and I am claiming the find. But I will also log a maintenance request.

Thanks anyway, nickhbnz.

16-Jul-19
No sign of the cache. Can CO check it out please? Thanks.

05-Jul-19
I had tried this one last time I was here but there was a guy hanging around and I couldnt find the second tac, tonight it was easy peasy and soon got to GZ but we didnt find the cache at the 2 not sure if this was meant to be like that or not. another easy fav point given thanks again for putting this together.

On a weekend away in napier for a board games convention. Out for a night time stroll. We really enjoy these night caches and have done a couple. We had fun doing this cache. Bit of s steep climb at the end but we found the cache easily. Fav point for a fun night time cache. Tftc.

Nice walk up

19-Aug-18
Had a fun time doing our first night cache. Followed many red herrings that seemed to reflect light but lead to dead ends. Had difficulty finding the fire tacks so took a while but got there in the end. Signed the log and replaced as found. Thanks for the adventure.

29-Jul-18
A fun cache. We have only done one of this type of cache in the past. No problem finding the fire tacks apart from the last one which we overlooked. Got there in the end

Fun cache to find. Lucky I had my torch with me. Couldn’t find the “trading container” but found the final cache. There was a family of snails on the bottom of the container. TFTH

14-Jan-18
Enjoyed our stroll here and apart from not finding anything below the two-reflector checkpoint, everything went smoothly all the way to the cache itself. Great use of the park, thanks for this one.

02-Jan-18
I had noted this a while ago when checking out Napier caches and had it on my 'must do at first opportunity' list. I have walked this path many times in the past but always in daylight. Soon found the fire tracks and all went as it was supposed to. Thanks, a fun cache that gets a FP.

06-Dec-17
I found this cache along with a small group of secondary school students (SJCgeocamp) who were finding Geocaches as part of their camp week. They visited Huka falls, Taupo, Napier, Hastings and Te Mata Peak over four days. We went swimming hiking, and biking and found a wide range of geocaches ranging from traditionals, puzzles, Earthcaches, gadget caches, and the boys favorites-night caches. My hope is that because of their experience they decide to continue Geocaching as a hobby in the future. Thank you to all the CO’s who placed and maintained all the geocaches we found and for bringing us to so many interesting spots.

The boys really enjoyed this one. We timed it perfectly with the sun just disappearing as we started. We didn't find the intermediary cache but had no issues locating the final. Neat fun.

A bit behind with the logging - on a 3 day caching adventure with rustynz and gorby Big Grin

25-Nov-17
More Westie fun, our group converged after a dinner at the Thai restaurant! yep its getting dark enough for us to get out the torches and start looking for those little tacks, leading us to the final.

Then the fun started, and as I climbed up higher and further from the group of three tacks, I had to remind myself of the D/T rating, as I seemed to be making it much harder than I needed too.

Eventually after searching here and there, and what felt like everywhere, a PAF was activated, with message that we needed to concentrate our efforts closer to home.

Shortly after Aiden29 said she could see it.... even then it wanted to be elusive, with the grass obscuring our view. Thankfully the cache was retrieved from its hiding place and the log was signed.

We love finding night caches, and this was one more fun find Big Grin

25-Nov-17
We always look for night caches when we head out of Auckland and w ill eventually do several along the way, this is the first here in Napier. We all met up at 8:30 pm ish and started walking. All went well until we got to the 3 fire tacks and for the life of us couldn't find the last 2 which turned out to right next to us! Amazing how that happens.

25-Nov-17
All 7 of us Westies came together to do the night caches around Napier and Hastings. After dinner we headed here, even though it was still a little light. We had no issue following the tacks until the final 3. We spent a long time scouring a large area trying to spot the final tack. Eventually I was down on the path and shined the light at just the right angle to reflect through the long grass. I called out to Merlot who was standing right by the final, but they couldn't figure out where I was pointing. Finally she pulled out the cache. Thankfully we didn't walk away with a DNF. We signed as Team Westies to save space on the log

25-Nov-17
We had made up a group of 7 Westies and flown down to Napier for a few days of caching. After dinner at a great Thai restaurant we all headed here for the night cache. We had no problems following the path until we found the last 3 tacks and commenced our final search. Hi , lo and everywhere. We expanded the search and just could not locate the final. One of the team resorted to phoning a friend for a nudge. With that help we resumed the search. it still took some time before aiden29 finally saw the cache and called out. Being very low, and quite overgrown it need someone at just the right angle, low down, and exactly in the right spot to be able to spot this one. Fortunately not a DNF but it almost was. Needs some weed clearing here to make the cache a little more discoverable.

25-Nov-17
Seven Westies ventured down to Napier for a wild weekend. After having an excellent dinner at a Thai restaurant, we came here to do the first of a few night caches we had targeted. We had no problems following the path until we found the 3 tacks and commenced our search and search we did. Eventually I resorted to PAF who had done it so long ago she couldn't remember exactly where it was but gave us a nudge as to what we needed to look for. So we continued searching and suddenly Aiden29 calls out, 'it's there'. 'Where?' I say, 'right there, right next to you'. Looking around we could see nothing, but Aiden just happened to be at the right angle to spy the tacks that were hidden by the long grass. Whew, we really didn't want to walk away with a dnf. We signed as Team Westies to save space on the log

Found as part of our Labour Weekend Geocaching Adventure with Furbies, lillianz, PhantasmNZ & Mrs PhantasmNZ. Log signed as "PFLL17".

It's become a bit of a tradition to find a night cache over our caching weekends - thanks for the opportunity Smile

TFTC. Nice little walk.

Cool find, don't know if i would have done this if i had realised the terrain, having spent the last few weeks resting an injured knee. TFTC

25-Feb-17
Second find on an evening out with hubby. Neither of us had ever been to this park before. The inclines on the trail certainly helped burn off dinner! We had to do a little bit of guess work, but we found the cache easily once at GZ. Mulled over a few potential night trail ideas while walking back to the car. Tftc

Wahoo found it. Had to go buy a torch at the Countdown but enjoyed the cache immensely. Thanks for putting it out.

Love night caches- tftc well worth the effort

19-Jan-17
I LOVE nightcaches, so this one was high on my list for tackling while in Napier visiting my brother. I decided to attempt this one late in the afternoon, in the hope that tree cover plus my new high lumens torch would light up the tacks.

I used my geo-sense and had some good luck, and soon had spotted the penultimate three tacks. I covered some distance searching around for the final two tacks with no luck at all until I returned to the three-tacks and tried again. Second time lucky! There is only one tack showing the final GZ at present, but it led me straight to the cache.

Thanks for placing this night trail here, and explaining why there would be a park here in the first place! TFTC

11-Jan-17
We decided to do another night cache in the Hawkes Bay and this one was selected. We had to wait for the sun to go down enough and for three muggles to finish their smokes on the steps. Then we were off following the sparkling trail. Got to the off-track part okay but had trouble with the location of the cache markers. They were nowhere to be seen. But hey, what's this lying amongst the leaves on the track, it's a fire tack. Couldn't see the second but had a hunt around and soon located the hcache's hidey hole. Let another locat cacher know the problem and asked them to contact the CO.

Cheers for the cache.

At our stay the the Napier beach in our motorhome we spotted this NC in our pocket query.
After sunset we started with our headlights and after 30 min we made it. It was short but really nice. Didn't expected such a steep hill around here. Found it with redheadd and capt'n mo. TFTC . mosmoni

Lets take that from the top ...

28-Sep-16
We have done a couple of night trails before, so when we saw that there was one in Napier we packed our torches. The route was nice and straightforward and the final tacks were easily spotted. Two of the team scrambled to the final GZ to make the quick find and leave a TB. Gets a favourite from us. TFTC.

10-Sep-16
With only a weekend spare, and coming over from Auckland we were on a serious time constraint. This is officially our first Napier cache and it was perfect to find a well layed out night cache. We took the geohounds and found the fire tacks easily. Found the log containerless but still dry in its plastic bag.
Seeing a dead rat[xx(] nearby I thought in wise to put log into a spare container I had in my bag.
Nice work nickhbnz Big Grin

20-Aug-16
first time we must have missed one because ended going in a circle-think i was more worried about the uneven path then where the tacks were. then had to clamber up a muddy bank to find cache- im glad mr 5 wasnt with me for this one. thanks for another night cache

20-Aug-16
An ok night trail though was pretty short. Tftc

31-Jul-16
On holiday here in Napier for a few days... Spent the day out driving around picking up a few caches along the way. Just had a big feed out by the port and parked up the car for the night.
Had prepared myself earlier with a torch in the jacket pocket... now to work off a little of that dinner.
Haven't done a night cache before - was always put off by doing these alone. But tonight I had conned hubby to walk with me. He thought I was nuts - but agreed as it looked pretty private here.
We wandered up to the top only seeing a couple of the tacks on trees - then went back to the start again for another go. And yes we managed to find the right spot on the 2nd attempt. Was pleased to have decent boots on - needed to climb up a bit of a slippery bank.
Log all good and dry (surprising). Would have been good to come back in the day time to see it differently - but off home tomorrow.
TFTC nickhbnz

The Three Amigos had planned this trip over several weeks we had a lot on our to do list all the bike trails all the puzzles in town except one we haven't solved all the night trails and all the wherigos plus any trads in between. There was one thing we ran out of while here and that was time so I guess we will be back another day.

After a busy day of caching and having dried off from the rain earlier on we refuelled our bodies with fish and chips then it was back into caching. This was our first official night cache and boy it was hard work on the legs after the bike ride and slippery in places with the rain but we got to the final fairly quickly and cache in hand without falling over.

25-Jun-16
We had planned a trip from Tauranga to Napier area for weeks now, and this weekend was the time to get as many caches as we could find. We called ourselves "The Three Amigos" (and logged as 'T3A'), comprising of myself, Philip.Perry and Davidsonclan. Leaving at 5am Saturday morning, we knew we had a long weekend ahead of us.

On our list of Must Do caches were the night trails recommended to us (and more evidently nickhbnz caches), so we were prepared for this, or so I thought. I wasnt expecting so many stairs and struggled up and down them, as I am still recovering from recent knee surgery.

We enjoyed this one in an area we would never have discovered otherwise.

Thanks for bringing us here and TFTC

We've had this Tauranga to Hawkes Bay trip planned for a couple of months now and this cache was all part of that great *'numbers'* plan. In fact we love night caches and this was one of the 4 we planned to get. The tacks were easily spotted and in spite of our general fatigue we soon made it to the final. A quick note about the container - or the lack of container, it was surprising to find this just in a zip-lock bag. And a warning to future cachers that this area becomes quite hazardous in the wet, especially when you leave the track - take care and cheers again Nick.

We were up visiting from Wellington, after having dinner nearby we decided we would try our luck at this night cache, we alway have fun doing these types of cache. We headed off up the pathway looking for firetacks, we needed to talk the little bear into venturing onwards into the dark. Luckily it was a nice easy firetack trail to follow and we were at GZ quickly, where the log book was quickly retrieved and signed. Tftc a favourite point from us.

My first cache in New Zealand! We are from Perth but are in the area for a wedding. My partner is a Hawkes Bay local and after him being in Perth 7 years we have decided to permanently relocate back to NZ. So, I'm looking forward to much more geocaching here in NZ!
Night caches are growing in popularity back home and I really do enjoy them. Glad to have the opportunity to go for a walk here and work off some of our dinner. After signing the log we had some difficulty getting back on the trail due to all the acorns on the path and ended up 'roller skating' down the hill. Gave us a good laugh! TFTC

The kid wanted to do it again - So much fun at night. Took mum along this time as well.

08-Feb-16
We were bothered by the sign at the park entrance saying that the pathway was closed for construction, but we pressed on anyway. We found plenty of firetacks, including one pair, but they led us in a big loop back to our starting place. Figuring that we probably shouldn't be there in the first place, we abandonned our quest. Oh well, can't win 'em all... sigh.

We walked this cache on daytime, because we did not stay in Napier for the night. With a lot of luck we managed to find the right trail and finally the cache

Started at the bottom of the stairs and found the first point and then after that we couldn't find any more. Found this one last night with Kirstie, we went around in circles a few times, found the trade container, then realised where we were going wrong and had the actual cache in hand pretty quick. Nice little walk at night, not too far but enough to see a nice view of a part of napier at night. Thanks!

Had a lot of fun doing this trail after months of saying that we need to do it! Completed it when it was still light but dark enough to see the reflectors. Went in circles at one point but soon got back on track and soon had cache in hand. Thank you for this fun trail.

We found only one fire tack at the final spot. Not sure if the other one was missing in action.

#7240. Parked on Dalton Street, and while we were about to set off, the Community Patrol arrived to see if we were all right. Nice to know the lonely spots were well covered in the city at night. The park was all quiet at this time. The city lights were blinding at times, but we managed to spot the first fire tack, and off we went.

Following the trail, we found the three fire tacks on the same tree. Trying to spot the final two fire tacks, we went further on an off-trail loop, but we did not spot the pair. Eventually returned to the three fire tacks. A little later, managed to spot the final hide – but it was guarded only one fire tack.

The cache was in excellent condition, all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

Thanks for the night tour, and …

I've never been on that track before. Kids loved it even though it was really dark and the track is uneven with no barriers! Once we knew what we were looking for the kids had a great time being first to point out the "lights". Located the cache, went to sign the log and discovered that my pen had fallen out of my pocket - probably while we were doing the last bit of searching - so we weren't able to sign the log. Hope it still counts as found?

Down for the weekend and thought we'd do some geocaching! This one intrigued us as we had never done a cache specifically designed to be done at night and we were not disappointed! Unfortunately we didn't have a pen with us so we took a photo as proof of find

[blue]Number 5 on our night caching excursion with KiwiAroaki and a McKenzie Pirate tonight. A nice little trail which was not too easy at first as the street lamps were not allowing the markers to display too well. However, once we knew what type of tack to look for then it was quite a straight forward trail to follow. The final resembled a fairy grotto on this cold night, not that I've seen one of those before either Wink[/blue]

[blue]This is my first dedicated night cache I've found, along with Kiwiowl and Kenzie Pirates. And this time, I didn't have to worry about a snake taking my finger off![/blue]
