Logs
Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I live full-time in our caravan travelling around NZ, visiting the places we want to visit & doing the things we want to do and fitting in a bit of Geocaching here & there we had been staying in Ashburton but headed out to the DoC Campsite at Peel Forest for a bit of a look around we decided we would go for a bit of a walk & clean up so of the shorter tracks in the area & nab some caches while out & about this was one of them the cache ended up being an easy find, log-book wasnt signed as it was soaking wet, refer photos & cache returned as found were also pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally TFTC ... TN:LN:LS this was #6,506 for us!
Enjoyed a walk around the loop track. Took a while to spot the Lancewood. I haven't seen one that size before. Once the tree was located, the cache was a quick find. TFTC.
Beautiful walk to find this one, thank you for placing it! Unfortunately the log was too went to sign on this occasion
A cracker day to be doing some geocaching at Mt Peel. No problem locating this cache which is in good condition. The hint was very accurate!! TFTC
Found with NZDi. It is Easter weekend and it is time to cross off one of the things on our bucket list, which is to visit the Peel Forest area. We headed south from Blenheim yesterday and overnighted in Rangiora in order to break up the trip. That was an uninspiring place to cache with a miserable strike rate. We arrived at the DOC campground well before check-in time but found out the camp custodians were from Blenheim too, and they let us have our site early. After setting up, we did the Kahikitea Track before lunch. This was the second cache of the morning and was a quick easy find as per the hint. It is good to see some of the DOC caches still up and running. The ones in our local area were not that well maintained and have maily fallen by the wayside.

The Temuka Girl Guides had a weekend camp at the Peel Forest DOC Camp ground. We went on heaps of cool walks around the area! This was a great wee spot to stop at. There were heaps of Piwakawaka flitting about. We left a Guide badge in the cache. Tftc
Thought I found it but was a lost bouncy ball. Then moved location for quick find.
Had to hunt around for this one but it is in the title. Log was wet added a piece of dry paper from farmerkeiths wallet into a plastic bag. Thanks for taking us on this nice walk around this area. TFTC
1523. 1:55 pm. Sadly we couldn't sign the logbook (see photo) and we didn't bring our geocache repair kit. TFT(saw pit)C.
Log so wet and basically just black mould holding hands, couldn't log it but have a photo if more proof required.

We are taking our cat Coco on a motorhome and Geocaching holiday. She looks after our home while we go off in Suzy on GC adventures.
Nice walk to this Saw Pit, happy to find the cache thanks George Iles.DOC.

A quick find thanks to the hint, and all good with the cache. Thanks for showing us some of the history of this area. We enjoyed the walk and had lots of fantails flying around us today. TFTC George Iles.DOC.

First thing after unpacking was to do a little walk to remedy a dnf. Was a very quick find and yes is a lancewood. Tftc the adult lancewoods I have encountered have non smooth trunks.
24 October 2020 5:02 pm. Beautiful stroll on a warm Labour Weekend. TFTC George Iles. DOC
After relocating our caravan we headed off to check out the area and grab a few caches. Pushed through shoulder high grass on a faint track to head into this one. Once there read through a couple of logs to gather info for an easy retrieval. tftc
Peaceful walk through the kahikitea accompanied by bird song. Took a bit of finding this one with help from previous posts. TFTC George
We were on our summer holiday, just driving around the South Island stopping where ever we end up when the daylight runs out. We have a few caches on our 'really want to find list' and the virtual nearby is on that list, so here we are at Peel Forest. We had stayed the night and had gone to look for another nearby cache (that we did not find on our first attempt), and as we were passing the camp kitchen we spotted another cacher from Nelson. We had a chat during which this cache was discussed, so once we bid farewell to paddlechick we came to look for the caches along this track.
We had to wait for a muggle family to wander on by, they had a small child so it took them a while. What surprised us is that they did not even come and have a look at the pit. But once they had gone it was a quick find for GK. We signed the log and returned it as we had found it.
Thank you for placing this cache and thank you for the smiley

Spent ages searching then read the previous logs, copied Isis58 ' idea of using a stick, first time I hit something that had a plastic sound to it tried putting my hand in but couldn't find it, tried the stick again and it popped out the bottom. Thanks George Iles. DOC

Searched lots for this on two separate occasions. The only Lancewood was a spindly one 1m from end of pit.
Path was ankle deep in water at the start, but having already gotten my feet wet on the way to the weta box it didn't really matter! GPS didn't like the tree cover, so in the end I ignored it and looked for the hint object, after finding it and knowing there was probably only one place the cache could be, I found a nearby stick to explore the hollow, didn't take long to knock the cache out of it's hiding place. Signed and returned. TFTC!
Unable to find this one even after reading the logs. I've never seen a lance wood you can put something inside so didn't understand the hint.
Fascinating history here. I remember finding a Bitsprayer cache at another saw pit in the area quite a few years ago. This took way longer than it should have. I did find it in the first place I looked but only located it on the third look after I poked a stick in way further than I had reached and searched several other places as well. Pleased to sign this one off. I came here via the track from the weta box and continued out to the road and back to the car from here. TFTC # 12,589
Thought a slime maker had eaten the cache, until as MR was busy writing the DNF log thinking it couldn't have gone missing in just 17 days...since the last log Mrs who generally doesn't like slimy places cleverly used a tool to poke deep in the bowels until finding a hard sound.. then she broke in to song.."to the left left every thing u own in a box to the left.."
Bird life here is a amazing!

#15409. We made hard work of this one. Eventually we realised we had to be in the pit, but then it took a while to work out where NW was (doh!). Then it still took a while to locate the cache. Troodles braved the foul-looking yellow slime that had somehow enveloped the cache. An interesting bit of history; well worth a cache. TFTC.
The forecast for today wasn't great, so StreetWalker and I decided to head to Mt Peel Forest to try and find the last of our unfound alphanumeric puzzles that were solved quite some ago, as well as carry on up the Mesopotamia road to see if we could score a couple of FTFs.
This took an embarrassingly long time to find. For a start, we can't tell east from west . Once we sorted out our compass directions, and were in the right spot, a bit of groping and I found the cache. I couldn't face returning it to the same spot (the slime was most off putting) so it has been replaced a few cms lower than where it was, in a slime-free spot.
An interesting spot, we saw a few saw pits on our walks today. TFTC.

ReCached and I spent quite a few minutes in the area described in the listing, but unfortunately the cache didn't show up in the places where we looked for it.

Great day out caching in the area, lot of neat caches, and interesting spots, needed 43 more caches to hit the 10000 finds mark think I got 62 for the day trip. Many Thanks Bitsprayer.

po dlouhém hledání jsem si musel vygooglit, co je lance wood, pak to ještě chvilku trvalo a měl jsem kešku v ruce
potom jsem i pochopil, k čemu se vlastně váže ta cedule... aspoň se u kešek i něco naučím

found on my second attempt should have read the description netter on a caching adventure with team_macdonald TFTC
Well this one took abit to find it wasn't until reading previous logs that said to reread the description that I realised we were searching everywhere but the right spot. Once in the right spot it was tracked down pretty quickly. Tftc found with rayzr2
Once esconsed(?) in the Mt Peel campground I took a little walk to find some DOC geocaches. Boy, this cache had me in a spin. Tricky! I'll have to go on a tree identication course. [B)] Was continually amazed at the quantity of birdsong that I heard in the area. Thanks for the cache.
My mission is my first 3 day tramp on Stewart Island. The Seagnoid has Xmas off so we are off on an epic adventure with Zara around the South Island. The Seagnoid is navigator and scribe, Zara and I have teamed up and Im cache logger. Day 6 - Wednesday - Ashburton to Tekapo today.
Took some hunting here and the hint was a puzzle in itself this time round. Finally snagged and tagged. Cheers

TaybeeDragon and I are off for a three day walk on Stewart Island. But we have a camper, so once you add in getting there and back, it's a three week trip. Day 6: Ashburton to Tekapo.
Oh, this took us way too long. GPS had trouble settling down, and it was ages before we worked out what the hint meant. That led me back to where we had thoroughly search and ruled out earlier. Tricky!
I have seen these saw pits before and wondered what they were. Thanks for the lesson!

Was searching for about 30 minutes and unfortunately had to give up. Enjoying the walk though.
Went for a walk around the Kahikatea Track this afternoon, found the cache after a short search. Very cunningly hidden and unlike so many DOC caches placed around NZ last year, the coordinates were good and accurate. An interesting bit of history, thanks for bringing me here. Signed log, TFTC
Have been after this for some time, and just loved the stroll once we found the track and then took the wrong turn. Located however and thankful for the previous logs. Another DOC cache which has taken us to unknown places. Wish you were able to put more in. Thanks.
Being historic in nature I wasn't expecting to find where I found. Tftc
Found yesterday with quinella. Always pleased with these doc caches- a nice meshing of the minds and interests . Tftc
TFTC SL Left swap. Nice wee walk into this one. Lovely place for a picnic. Heaps of parking !!!!!!
