Up the Major Hornbrook, down this way, which I'd never been brave enough to follow and find out where it went without any signage. What a lovely track, it'll become one of my regulars. Sadly the pencil in my pocket didn't survive my gallop down the hill. Photo of log attached, and I'll revisit to properly sign another day. Tftc

After a lovely dinner at Civil&Naval, WiscoBryo suggested we finally bag this one. We let Hugh off his leash to chase a tennis ball and enjoyed a nice walk up. I didn’t know this little path was back here! I wonder what all the little construction projects are?

Thanks for the walk and the TB!

This was actually the first geocache I found a few months back, but had lost my pencil while rummaging for it and couldn’t sign the log. Living so close, I kept telling myself it was an easy trip back and I’d sign it later. Well, three months on and we got there! Fuelled by some of the best fried chicken in NZ (thanks Civil and Naval), OSC and I made our way back up for a quick find. Thankfully (?) I’d forgotten exactly where the cache was, so it was a little like finding it for the first time Smile

22-Nov-22
Area is difficult to access but we got there and found the cache cache was 10m from where our GPS said.

21-Nov-22
Took a while to find but got there in the end. GPS was wanting us to be somewhat further away. tftc

Beautiful spot, and great cache.

08-Sep-21
As we are now in level 2 from 8th September geocaching is now permitted again

22-Aug-21
Disabled as we are in lockdown and geocaching is not a permitted activity during lockdown

Awesome cache! Be ready with a cool trade

07-Oct-20
We walked up on the Hornbrook track and down here. Good looking playground, almost heard the kids in the bushes. Some old ruins nearby, wondered what it have been. TFTC.

21-Aug-20
2nd time looking for this one, and an easy find this time.

I am pretty sure I have found at least one earlier cache in here.

Cheers and thanks,

Out for a morning walk and this was a reasonably quick find so many rocks to check out. So in hand and in good condition. Thanks LW

17-Jun-20
Great place for a playground!! Out with the CO today and she told me lots of stories about the "old days" Pointed out some of the history of the area, absolutely fascinating. TFTC Very safe and dry in it's spot. Cool

17-Jun-20
Checked the cache today and it is looking good. My phone seemed to be about 20 metres out today but is normally spot on.

22-Dec-19
Found it.

Today is a calendar day, and with the good weather forecast, StreetWalkerNZ and decided to go to Lyttelton to look for caches which involved a walk, before the tracks get any more slippery with winter approaching.
After a couple of short walks, and some lunch in Lyttelton, this cache was next on our to do list. SW found the original many years ago but I had never made it here. What a great secret location.
The cache was a quick find once in the right spot, but it took quite a while to get to the right spot! The GPSrs were skitterish here and we hadn't read the cache description properly Red Face so wasted a bit of time on the wrong side of the track.
The plan was to carry on up to the Major Hornbrook track, and the cache there, but my legs said no, another time. Thanks for bringing me here and TFTC. Left a TB.

#17160. We managed three caches in the morning, then headed into Lyttelton for a bite to eat. Then it was time to find the remaining caches we needed for today. This one took quite a while, but we were determined to find the cache after expending a bit of effort to get to GZ. I was very pleased when Troodles found the cache. TFTC.

20-Mar-19
No problems finding it today. Looked around and hint helped. All good still there.

10-Dec-18
Gave it a good look at the GZ under all large hint objects, no joy.

26-Nov-18
I remember finding the original but couldn't get this on.
She season has been kind to grass growth so we will probably come back in the winter.
Cheers and thanks,
S.t.

Oh dear. This turned out to very nearly be a disaster. I arrived here relatively late after walking over the hill. The GPS wasn't very decisive, and it took several loops around before getting the right angle, and spotting the obvious container. I put the stuff down, pulled the box out, did the usual, then packed up. But where is the GPS? ARGH! Where did I put it? Did it slide off a rock? Did I push it aside? Once I started pulling up clumps of grass, I realised it could have falled a long way down. I looked under, I poked, I prodded. Half an hour later, I was just about to leave, when I spotted a funny looking rock at my feet. Luckily it was somewhere that I had pulled the grass up from, and even then hadn't seen it from the other angle. What a relief. It almost turned into 'Titanic Erratic II' (for those old enough to remember that). Whew. Was the old one near here? I think the lid might still be there. Thanks anyway.

15-Sep-18
Quick and easy. Very quiet place TFTC

02-Sep-18
Found your original cache here years ago. Sure this area had more trees then.

04-Jul-18
Marshall’s Geelong found this cache today on our NZ Adventure!
Was very steep up the path, and the grass was nice and wet.
What a view though! TFTC

To keep up with my personal challenge of achieving a minimum of 10 caches finds per day I needed to find 5 caches today and the 5 unfounds I had up in the hills behind Lyttelton made Lyttelton the place to go.

I DNF'd this cache last spring due to (a) cache was missing, (b) the long grass and (c) my hayfever getting the better of me. Today, being in the middle of winter, was an opportune time to re-visit. No problems today, Found the cache under a rock that I had definitely searched last time. Thats 4/5ths of my caching targets acheived - just 1 to go. TFTC Lytteltonwitch.

We went on a walk from College Rd up to the hills for a First to FInd and then continued onwards and upwards to Mount Pleasant peak from where we got down via Major Hornbrook track, and I made the suggestion to take Chalmers to get this cache.
Easy to loose footing here due the hidden rocks under the dense long grass.
We stumbled around for some time until getting to the right boulder.

Mrs Rincewind was off to Zumba in Diamond Harbour tonight so my mission was to drop her at the boat then find a cache (three). I decided on a loop up Chalmers Track to Major Hornbrook Track and down that one to the road and back to the car. Chalmers Track beyond tge old quarry is now a stream in places and chest high grass and fennel in others. I'm not actually sure council is maintaining it.
In the end I did the loop with time to spare so I'm typing this at Fat Tony's Bar & Swill with a beer handy.
As I walked up this track I started to feel it was familiar, particularly when I saw the water reservoir. Got near GZ and realised I HAD found the original. This one was nowhere near the challenge (possibly due to a bit more experience). All in good nick here.
TFTC Cool

I checked and cache was missing. This idiot didn't have a spare container in her backpack so walked back to the car for the replacement. It isn't really that big a hill. Cache is now a 1 litre square container.
When I turned to leave I saw something out of the corner of my eye and I stood on a rock to see the original cache. Because it had been out in the open everything was damp so left the replacement cache there. I suspect that the culprit was the person who has left graffiti on several boulders.

Whilst I was in Lyttelton to gather data for the Lyttelton to Ferrymead Rail multicache I thought I'd also make attacks on the 3 trads that were up the hill behind the town. After finding the caches on the Major Hornbrook track I made my to this cache's GZ. Although I spent more than normal search time hunting for the cache I could see anything. Maybe, I'll wait until next winter before attempting again - the lush spring grass growth was too much for my allergies today.

14-Oct-17
Out for a nice walk with the whanau and a few caches along the way. I don't think I have ever made it to this path before, and I loved it!! Found and logged, last one fr the day! TFTC!!

Beautiful weather, and so many caches to find out port hills way, so what better way to spend a Saturday than getting a whole bunch of them?

So we headed out for a family walk to do a bit of a loop around, and find a whole bunch of caches. Me, Hubby & baby, + mum & my brother.
We ended up getting 9 caches, which really wasn't a bad effort at all! I was impressed that we got so many!

Last one for the day. Also a pretty quick one to find!
A little damp inside unfortunately though.

TFTC!! Smile

16-Jul-17
Cachelets and I needed to stretch the legs. The weather has been pies so we headed out with gumboots and rain jackets. We caught the Gondola up and walked down. It was muddy. We all had turns slipping over and the track was a river in parts. We had a blast. We scored the cache and headed down to Lyttelton to have some hot chippies before getting the bus back to our truck. Good fun.

Thanks for the cache lytteltonwitch.

Out for an adventure with Nosynel to collect a cache or two. Was a bit boggy so we took our time. Had a great afternoon on a crisp winters day. Cache quickly found. Cheers for the smile.

BBear44 and I went for a geocache inspired walk in the Lyttleton area this afternoon.
This was our last find today. Sadly someone had written expletives through the log book. Who knows what their problem was as it is a nice geocache in a good area.
Find out more about New Zealand's next big event [Oamaru Geofest](http://oamarugeofest2017.wixsite.com/geocachingevent)

Thanks. for putting in the effort to hide this geocache. This was find 4851 for me.

02-Apr-17
A quick find whilst scrambling around rocks. Lovely to find books inside. Enjoyed the views as we hiked the track. TfTC

02-Apr-17
Found with TipsyTrout on a great walk in the hills. We walked up the Hornbrook track from the bottom and came back down the Chalmers Track. Sad to see the nasty comments in the log book though. Great spot, TFTC and thanks for bringing us here!

26-Feb-17
Short grunt up from the car, perfect weather for something like this, misty cloud and a bit damp. I arrived at GZ and started having a poke around, then looked around to all of the possible hiding spots and started cursing the CO's name... just as I was starting to climb over some of the boulders, I spotted the cache right in front of me (in the second place I looked...) ... oh... lol. TFTC (3454)

12-Feb-17
Walked up Major Hornbrook track and back down Chalmers track. Gave the old legs a good workout! The cache was a quick find. Sadly, judging by the comments in the logbook, a previous finder is non too keen on geocaching! TFTC.

29-Jan-17
Surprisingly the cache is still here, with the sentiments expressed in the log book! Its a wee bit damp. not exactly wet, just damp in the container. Quickly found and replaced. Cheers

Another nice day for a wee bit of caching around Christchurch.

Thanks to the CO's for the hides. Cheers.

30-Oct-16
Nobody around. Plenty of books in place. Bit damp inside container due to recent rain. Might pay to visit with an eraser and rub out the childish swearing written in pencil on every page of the log. Makes it not kid friendly at the moment. tftc

10-Sep-16
Checked the cache today and it is in good order. Remember that you are welcome to take a book and don't need to swap. Just let me know when it is getting low and I will restock it.

Great day walking in the hills after a swim at corsair
Smile beautiful weather and cool idea for cache contents. Didn't take any books but thank you!

25-Nov-15
After talking about this one at the parking entrance at the Mega we thought we would have a look on what turned out to be a bonny afternoon. Well what a surprise!!! This one was special. The dell was absolutely covered in wild flowers of every hue. (Lupins mainly) A pleasant up hill walk and a not so easy hunt. Even found a tent which had been carefully hidden, but no rock climbers. Mind you, you wouldn't want to have an earthquake phobia up here. Thanks for the hide LW a fav from us.

20-Nov-15
16:50. Found this one in my way back down from the summit. Took a little while to find the proverbial 'needle' and then I promptly forgot which 'haystack' I found it under. Smile. I could well imagine youngsters playing in this patch.
I'd urge any future cachers to come prepared with a paperback to swop. Alas I had none, so just left a calling card and took a rat. TFTC.

22-Oct-15
FTF! Just got home from work and tea was being prepped. Noticed a new cache notification on my phone and it's just around the corner...ish. Tea was turned off and Mr Doolittle took off in a mad excited rush. We have only had one other FTF so this was too good to miss. This area was also a stomping ground for us when we were young. Sadly the earthquakes have changed so many areas around here. Lyttelton was such a cool place to grow up with all the hills and beaches. Took 2 books and left 2 books and met a friendly rock climber Smile TFTC lytteltonwitch
