I started 2020 with some improbable caching goals that only lasted until mid February.
Then came Covid-19 and caching began to take a back seat.
But with restrictions easing and socially responsible caching again possible it is time to start filling the calendars again.
Seven cachers set off in Four 4WD vehicles using satellites to search for caches in and around Arkaroola and the Gammon Ranges. [^] The Six day Arkaroola Odyssey had begun.
Day 5: We visit a few mines!
This was target #1 for the day and it was a long and winding trek to get here. [^] Time for head lamps and torches and a interesting exploration of the mine. [^] The cache was a quick find although I had it in hand and thought it to light to be the cache. Luckily Freddo prompted me to open it. - I blame the long walk! Cache aside we had a great time finding crystals on the ceiling and a plethora of mummified animals, the roo plus another and an echidna! A fantastic cache worthy of a FP from me.[8)]
***Thanks The Arkaroo for putting out this cache and maintaining it for our enjoyment. ***

We have headed north for some serious 4WD in Arkaroola and the Gammons. Today is Friday and we are on the bull dust ridden road/track/trail/rock filled creek bed at East Painter. Time for walkies. The last cache on this 6km stroll up the creek. We came equiped with torches and a mud map with interesting instructions. The mine was entered and we found many colourful geological, mineral and dead marsupial specimens before we found the cache.
On the return 6km stroll we found no signs of Wayne's GPSr in the creek.
Thanks for placing a fun cache guys. We do love your work. We signed the logbook. Of course we did that is way we play this game. Cache in pretty good condition for the cache age.

Found on a fun 4WD trip in this spectacular landscape. Thanks for the cache.
Found during a caching trip to Arkaroola and the Vulkathunna-Gammon Ranges National Park in the northern Flinders Ranges. Really enjoyed the spectacular landscapes, the 4WD tracks, and the walking and rock-climbing in the quest for some challenging caches in a remote region of the State. After an early morning start and a lengthy walk along the creek bed we entered the mine and found the cache after a short search by torchlight. Thanks for the cache The Arkaroo + RockSandra!
This week a small group of us headed up from Adelaide to the northern Flinders Ranges to do some exploring and find a few caches. Although a couple of us had spent some time in the area before, it was new country to most of the group.
The main aim was to find the caches in and around Arkaroola and the Vulkathunna-Gammon Ranges National Park. These were mostly Traditionals, but also included a Multi and an Earthcache. There were also three older Traditional caches that had been archived a couple of years ago but were still in place.
We had some fun navigating around the various roads and 4WD tracks and walking and scrambling up and down the hills and creek lines. It certainly is a very spectacular and rugged part of the state.
The weather was pretty good with a few beautiful still, clear and sunny days although there were also a couple of very windy days. The nights were mostly cold though, with temperatures around zero degrees on a couple of nights.
All of the cache containers and logbooks found were in good condition.
This cache was found on Day 5 of the trip. We wandered up the gorge following an old vehicle track. We were surprised to see recent tracks from a quad bike - it was impressive where it had managed to travel! The scenery up the gorge was fantastic. After some exploration of the old mine, the cache was found in good condition.
Thanks The Arkaroo for the cache.

found it with jacknor. That's a long walk from the car. Didn't read the cache notes so didn't bring a torch, found under torch light of the phone. Also didn't see the mud map till we sat down for lunch at the old ruins nearby when i read the cache notes. That made for a interesting search in the old mine. Also lost my gps on the return journey somewhere, it was on a lanyard around my neck when we left here but didn't have it by the time i passed the first cache in the gorge. We rewalked back here the day after and all we found where wallabies.
found with sir_spectre while we where camping at arkaroola. sir_spectre wanted to go " rock " 4x4 driving around all the trails up here and cache as we passed them. At the mine now. sir_spectre entered into the mine and every shortly i couldn't here any foot steps and a combo i needed for my D/T grid. fav point. plus interesting history i never new.
Well, Skippy is having a bit of a party with all his mates dropping in. Great finish to a walk from the other end of the gorge. TFTC
Well worth the effort to get this far. Skippy and mates have seen better days but still worth venturing to where they lay.
Continuing onward from GBR, I realised that movement through this area is much quicker with shoes on, and hey clothes are pretty warm too, so why not? After all, it was getting pretty nippy! Setting a good jogging pace, I made my way up to the enterance. Talk about a fantastic run! One of the best I have done in a long while! The scenery is just second to none! Once I had passed th old campsite, I was faced with the mine enterance. Usually, something like this I would jump straight in, but I was a little more hesitant to say the least about this one! Its not really the glorious, high ceiling cathedral I had pictured. Instead, its a kind of creepy dungeon that Mick Taylor out of Wolf Creek would be proud of. Kangaroo arms lie limp and disjointed from their bodies, literally nothing more than a rotting bag of bones. My torch was low on battery, making it difficult to see anything more than 3m ahead. But bringing out the phone and camera torches, I had a plethora of light, making this solo adventure a much more comfortable experience. Continuing right to the end, I discovered that the kangaroo marked on the Arkaroos map has a new friend; er.. of sorts! This one looked very recent possibly within the last few months. Thankfully I had a cold at the time as I imagine it would have stank! Finding the cache I quickly signed and got out of there! The further I moved toward the enterance, the fresher the air got! Phew!! From here, I was VERY thankfully for the jog back! TFTC!!!!
