Nelson on Sale: Im utilising a cheap flight for a day of progressing assorted caching goals.Cool spot to visit, thanks
Hello steve7mm08,Another day, another Cache.Together with Dr Donna travelling through New Zealand. We arrived at Auckland Airport and made our way up north. After visiting Cape Reinga we went on our way South to reach Stewart Island with stops in many different Citys all over the country. Of course we have an open eye for nice Caches but take what we can get. Today we came across your Cache "Monument (Nelson)" and signed the logbook with our names or took pictures for Virtuals or Earthcaches and answered all questions asked. Its great how many nice spots we are able to discover through our journey and how many of them we only See because of Geocaching! Thanks for bringing us to this place and takeing care for the geocache.
Thanks for bringing us to this site, we really enjoyed reading all about this historic figure and his life. Got the obligatory pic with the little statue at the top - visited with rumpuslabs, thanks for the cache
Day twenty nine of our epic New Zealand Adventure with The Morris.Spent the day riding on the Great Taste bike trail from Kohatu to Nelson through the tunnel.Sunny all day in Nelson. A beautiful day for a ride.We were running out of time at this end of the ride, but we couldn't go past Ernest's memorial. Thanks, Robmc.
Day 29 of our Enzed adventures with Robmc and today we rode the ebikes from Kohatu to Nelson through the tunnel. It was a beautiful day for a ride and the few few caches were logical and easily spotted so we thought we had this in the bag. By the time we had a very late lunch we had to make the decision to just ride straight home or incur a penalty with the bike shopA small diversion so Robmc could check this bloke out.'Thanks for contributing to a great day's riding
We have learnt quite a bit about Rutherford in or younger years but didnt know (or have forgotten) that he was born here. Thats a nice little statue of him. The information boards are an interesting read too. Thank you for showing us this spot.
It's a pretty wet and miserable morning, but we couldn't not stop to check out this virtual. We parked further down the road and walked back. What a great monument. Thanks for putting a virtual here and encouraging us to stop and check it out.
Me and rattll are on a three week roadie around the South Island. We spent last night at Wakefield, and cached between there and Nelson, before finding a spot for the night along the waterfront. I've passed through Brightwater many times over the years, but never stopped to have a proper look at the Rutherford Memorial until today. I'd no idea that the statue was Rutherford as a young boy! You learn something new every day. Tftc!
A familair name, having studied nuclear physics back in the day. I didn't know this was his home town. Stopped on our way north today. Thanks steve7mm08.
This was great, first to know where he was born, then his remarkable achievements and inspiration for others.A fav from me thanks steve7mm08
CaptainVimes and I have crossed the ditch to attend the Geo Toroa mega in Dunedin and tour around the South Island for two weeks.Nice little monument to the man. Thanks steve7mm08 and happy caching
Armed with jandals and a chilly bin, a couple of Aussies headed across the ditch for a 3-week tiki tour, exploring the beauty of New Zealand.DAY 7: Nelson to Greymouth.A quick stop here for a selfie. Thanks for showing us this special place by placing this cache, steve7mm08 ?? tena koe~??????????~
Day #5 Nelson to Greymouth - The Mega New Zealand ExperienceA chance for an overseas Mega was too good to pass up. Especially with half the state seeming to be attending also. I set about some last minute planning.? Flights still available? Accommodation found? Mode of transport securedLooks like its time to cross the ditch. Ive never visited the South Island before so it is bound to be a fun filled trip. After a day of exploring Nelson and a home cooked dinner from Grub62 and Bunadoorian, it was off to Greymouth via a number of sights.A short stop here on the way out of town.A big thanks goes to steve7mm08 for taking the time to add Monument (Nelson) to the geocaching map for us all to find and enjoy.----------------------------------------------------------Wow! The fun just never stops.Have you logged your will attend for Victoria's first ever Block Party? (Think Mega but even more special!)Join us on 22-23 March 2025 in Sunbury to celebrate 25 years of geocaching by logging your will attend at [**GCAP417**](https://coord.info/GCAP417).?
I knew a little bit about the history of Rutherford, but nice to see a larger monument with more info here! I must have driven a dozen times on the SH6 right past the sign, but never noticed it. Thanks for showing me this place in more detail!Main target for today was GC5Y002 - Six feet under but since I was heading a bit further south, I picked up some caches along the way as well.
Out grabbing some caches this morning, interesting spot here, great place for a virtual, TFTC
Drove up to Nelson from Christchurch yesterday. Was dark by the time I got here but still able to snap a photo, which is attached.
On a roadie of the sth Island from invercargill. Good lot of information here on this fella. Tftv

Driving from Tasman to Blenheim and stopped for this cache. Cute statue! Cheers and TFTC
Great spot to stop. Awesome tribute to Rutherford the Scientist. Great info boards. Photo taken with pen and half my head with statue in background. Thanks for this one
Today we passed this place. Quite intresting. Lot to read and learn around. tftc
A great memorialDidn't exist here 40 yrs ago when I lived in the region. Photo taken with GPS device. Thanks
A cool place to visit, I was surprised the statue was so small though. Photo with GPS and my caching name. Thanks for placing this cache, it filled a gap on my Jasmer (hidden month) grid so it was a priority to find on our trip.
After years on our bucket list and three cancellations due to Covid, we are thrilled to finally be here. Following several cruises we flew from Sydney, Australia to Wellington, New Zealand to begin our next adventure. Picked up our rental vehicle and will be driving, exploring, hiking, and caching both islands for 3.5 weeks. This was an interesting stop where we learned some new facts and snapped some pictures. Not a muggle in sight during our stop. Thanks for adding to our adventure today, Nukeworker and Racquetball Girl, Arkansas, USA
We remember reading about this bloke when we were in Christchurch. Nice to see him later on.
I made a quick stop here at my evening walk. Thank you for showing this great place with a lot of interesting history
What a gorgeous cute Vitual this is. Very interesting spot. Thanks for bringing here and this Virtual cache steve7mm08.
It would be plain rude to go right past this virtual. 1MinnieMoo spent quite a bit of time at this memorial. We enjoyed learning about the reasons for said monument. TFTV steve7mm08
26/9/2023 Find #6634Day 18 of the Fangsoki/1MinnieMoo New Zealand South Island adventures. We are currently staying in Nelson for a couple of nights, and had a list of target caches we wanted to find. This virtual was one of those. Of course upon seeing the young Nelson, I had to have a bit of fun with him. Especially as I work with young children. He seemed rather disagreeable to me taking him to school tho. Thanks for the virtual steve7mm08.
This is right in my neck of the woods, literally less than a km from my back door. I decided to log it today & take the necessary pic

Some time ago a group of us from Wellington decided that what we should do is come down to the Nelson region for a long weekend of Geocaching. So we did. We had such a good time that just a few months later we decided to do it again. The same team to the same location, with the same agenda. The only real goal for this four day break is exploring, having fun, and finding more of the unfound geocaches in the area.
Day three of the trip had us between Nelson and Wai-iti. We stopped at many caches along the way, and this was one of them.
Most of our finds here we signed the log with the collective name of N.M.T.Y to represent the four of us: NZ_B, Mr-Mcgoo, TwigNZ, and YetiNZ.
---
Thanks to steve7mm08 for placing and maintaining this cache. I enjoy each and every cache I find, and it is only with Geocachers like this creating them and placing them out in the world that this wonderful game continues.
[DGSc-Bulk] tagging to help me generate a list for GC30AD8 - DGSc Challenge.

On our way to a dinner for the people involved in the Dog Trials this weekend and, as we are only visiting and do not know how to get about around Nelson, we needed to plot a way to get to it so I hit enter on this cache which had a high favourites and somewhere on the road to our destination and accessed navigation. We stopped here anyway and we are glad we did, an FP from us. Would never have know this was here otherwise. Rather bummed that somehow I managed to not notice the multi here (and as we walked by all the info boards and read some of the info it should have been easy to accomplish that one too). However, it was dark and photos are not that good with a beneath par phone camera. The photo attached is the best we could do with GAR taking the photo (tried both of us but couldn't make out the background!).
Wow, I had no idea! Thanks for the education! I came all the way from Vancouver BC Canada to find this cache Thanks for being part of the adventure!
Day 8 on our holiday in New Zealand. We visited the spot of this Virtual Cache. We made the requested photo, and added it to the log.

spent 6 great weeks in New Zealand with my The start was a bit bumpy (Cyclone Gabrielle) but then it got better and better. We travelled to both islands and discovered a lot. We photographed and filmed many beautiful things, but most of it stayed in our hearts.
Almost everywhere we stopped, a cache was already waiting for us. Most of the caches are well maintained and easy to find.
With mostly very nice weather, we saw a lot of this impressive island. In many places, caches were waiting for us, which were sometimes easy and sometimes difficult to find. This cache was also included and was successfully signed
We puzzled a lot in advance and the tours were well prepared
So this box was also well found.
now I have another on my personal cache card.
many thanks to [^] **steve7mm08** [^] for the effort and the cache and greetings from Germany

I visited Sunday afternoon 12 March. A bit hard taking a picture of myself and cellphone, so I improvised, showing the detail in b&w. Thanks for leading me to the monument. TFTC.
(# 7577) Day 2 of the West Coast trip primarily to go to the Wild Food Festival in Hokitika. Today we traveled from Nelson to Hokitika and grabbed a few caches on the way. What an amazing place. Thanks to geocaching you are taken to places like this otherwise most people would just drive on past without stopping and taking in the whole place. Read all the information boards regarding Ernest's life and achievements. Thanks for bringing me here.
Day 2 of caching adventure to the wildfoods festival. Today is Nelson to Hoki. Travelling with Mr McGoo and Justlooking00. After massive ferry cancellations, we have not been sure this trip was going to happen, so are making the most of it.
I would give this more than 1 FAV if I could, the memorial is spectacular, we throughly enjoyed it. Once again geocaching takes you to some pretty special places. This is also a oldie month I don't have so even better. Photo attached of our visit. Thank you.

A special place in the history of science. Great to see some effort has been made to commemorate one of NZ’s finest on the international stage. A FP from me.
Mit meiner Tochter dieses schöne Monument besucht. Vielen Dank für diesen Oldie und ganz herzliche Grüße vom Rumtreiber aus Braunschweig, Deutschland.
Nice to stretch the legs after a drive through the lewiis pass. Weird to hear the recording

We flew down from Auckland to Nelson for another session upon the PWGT caches and other caches that appeal. This is our last trip for the series and will complete it in the 4 days we have allowed ourselves. On this trip there is myself, rustynz, FMZ, Rebel98 and Bony-Bruce (FMZ’s mascot) starting in Nelson and heading north as far as Abel Tasman and then way south of Fox Glacier. 1500km of driving in our trusty rental.
3rd to last cache for our team, then we fly back to Auckland for a rest from caching...lol. I had this cache saved for the team, but we were rather pressed to ignore this as we drove south to get onto the PWGT caches 3 days ago. So driving back into Nelson, we have more time, but not much, so we jumped out of the car and got onto this one.

Great to learn about our history while on a long overdue trip up the Westcoast to Nelson.
On a west coast adventure and on our way to Nelson for a few days . My first time to travel up the west coast of the south island In 20 years so this time we get to cache our way in to uncharted territory, so let's see what fun adventures awaite us bring it on.

Out and About exploring the Nelson area and today we are on a mission to nab a multi we have sorted cords for , with the needed equipment we headed for the hill and up into the clouds.
So let go and see if we are on the right track.
We couldn't drive past this one with out stopping to look at this one as it's part of our history and I did not realize this was here .
Life is short. Live one foot step at a time.Never say" I'm gonna "- Just do it!!

A quick stop on the way into Nelson to get a selfie with Lord Rutherford. I didn’t know that much about him. Thanks for making me stop and learning more.
This section covers Palmerston North to Richmond, on my return journey towards Christchurch.
This was a nice find, as it checks off another Jamser month, and I want to start finding more of the cache types I've been slack on (Virtuals, Letterboxes and WhereIGos) Quite possibly the most awkward photo I've ever taken, however I've misjudged my timing getting around a couple of these, which meant I arrived in nearly complete darkness. Wandered through and had a look at the info baords too, quite informative so thanks for bringing me here!
TFTC steve7mm08, the cache was found in good order Signed, sealed and returned to GZ. 10 find(s) of 11 today, making this find #2550

Stopped off here as we headed off to Nelson Lakes. Really impressive memorial, with lots of great detail about Lord Rutherford's life.
Found at 25 January 2021 7:47 pm on day two of a short holiday to the Nelson-Tasman region. As it's an area I haven't cached in before (and a long time since I've visited), I of course wanted to pick up some caches (but not as many as I would have liked, but family came first on this one). Thanks to all the cache owners for putting these out.
Another cache on my targeted caches list, not just to clear the unfound month on my Jasmer grid, but because this is one of the original virtual caches. Parked up and went to take a look. One of the information boards must have a glitch as it was continuously playing its information. An interesting location. Photo taken. All good here, and TFTC

Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I are on a bit of a Christmas Roadtrip from Auckland to Ingill & back ... we'll be doing a few geocaches on our travels ... this being the 149th cache of hopefully many ... we had been spent Christmas in Invercargill & were now heading back to Auckland, taking the scenic route ... we were now heading North, doing caches as we go ... driving up through the Buller Gorge, stopped here to get this Virtual which was on my 'Virtual Hit List' ... good to read the various sign boards, lots of interesting info ... good to add another 'smiley face' to the tally ... TFTC ... TN except photos:LN:didn't SL; it's a Virtual! ... #1,883 for us.
A family bike ride from Richmond to this monument, our turn around point. Never been here before - lots of information to keep us busy. I have a virtual cache about Kate Sheppard, who's on one of our other bank notes, so this was extra interesting. TFTC.
Staying in geocamper nearby and biked through Brightwater and to the flash bridge and back. Had stopped and read the info on way out without realising this virtual was here. Stopped on way back to take the photo. Surprised to later see that every one else has chosen the statue as the distinctive feature....
Nice to be away on another geocaching trip with tmann421, travelling to a few places in the upper South Island.

Day 6 of my 2020 NZE (New Zealand Experience).
(My apologies for the delayed logging but I'm in catch-up mode)
Seeing as I can't be in America right now, I'm touring around the South Island instead. During my time here I am aiming to find as many of the TMGT caches as I can (preferably all 41) and also as many Virtuals, Earthcaches and Letterbox Hybrids as possible, plus any Trads or others that will fill a hole in my D/T grid, my Jasmer grid, or else the last 3 remaining Hidden Dates on that grid.
Today was going to be a very long drive, going from Westport all the way up to Farewell Spit which is somewhere I have longed to visit for a very long time. I've been close, but never quite made it all the way up there before. The great weather of the last few days continued to follow me around the island too, which always helps set a good mood for a road trip.
There was no-one else around as I stopped here to explore the monument, so I was able to take a few photos easily. Good to see a decent memorial to Lord Rutherford and his works.
Thanks for placing this Virtual cache.

You don't expect that much and interesting information when you just drive past. I was surprised when I finally stopped here and took the time to read through all the boards (encouraged by another cache I needed to get the info for).
Well worth a virtual.
Well worth a virtual.
Called past on our way between Hokitika and Mapua. Showed the kids the memorial - great site - TFTC!
An interesting monument. Will have to spend some tome answering questions for the puzzle cache. This time just did the virtual cache as had people to see and places to go. TFTC

We are in the Nelson/Motueka area for a family gathering over the weekend. This was our first planned stop, as we are delighted to fill another month on our JASMER calendar. We really enjoyed our stop here and it is a wonderful memorial to Rutherford and his great work. Thanks for bringing us here, it was a highlight on our trip.
I started my great and unique round trip over the South Island in Christchurch.
My first major stopover was at Lake Tapeko - here I hiked up to Observation Mountain.
I then planned two days in Mount Cook NP with some unforgettable hikes. My big goal was the Mueller Hut - on a super strenuous hike I reached it.
I continued my journey over the lonely Danseys Pass to Dunedin.
Afterwards I drove along the Southern Scienic Route via Invercargill to Manapouri for some days. On this route I visited many sights and enjoyed the beautiful nature again and again.
I already booked a tour to the Doubtful Sound in advance - another highlight on my tour.
Afterwards I drove on to Queensown and Wanaka. From there I continued over the Haast Pass to the lonely Jackson Bay with storm and heavy rain. Afterwards I drove along the west coast always in pouring rain.
The rain stopped the whole west coast, but I had good rainwear with me. Only high up in Nelson the sun shone again.
Soon I reached the east coast again in Picton and Blenheim and the sun was shining again.
After a few days I travelled back to Christchurch via the beautiful town of Kaikoura.
At the end of my round trip I spent a few more days in Christchurch and its surroundings.
I visited many geological sites and found many caches on my round trip. In Rangiora I visited an event.
I travelled 3418 km and take home a lot of positive experiences.
Thanks to many beautiful caches I was also shown unique locations, historical sites and geological features.
I am overwhelmed by the fantastic and ever changing nature on the South Island of New Zealand - I will definitely come back.
Many thanks to all owners

After so many opportunities over the years to stop here and have a look I made it a plan to take the turn off the main road and come checkout the history of this New Zealander. An impressive site and interesting that the monument itself is smaller than expected. This is one of the older caches in NZ so it's nice to get here to make the find. Thanks steve7mm08.

Planning for the [NZ Mega 2020](http://nzmega.com) event is well underway. It will be held in Auckland over Labour Weekend, 23 to 26 October 2020. It's going to be a massive celebration of geocaching:
* 20 years of geocaching worldwide.
* 20 years since New Zealand had the very first geocache hidden outside of USA.
* And it's 2020 - all the 20s!
Talk to your geo-friends and start planning to be part of [this event](http://nzmega.com) - you won't want to miss it!
