This is the "Elbefähre Pretzsch", a "Gierseilfähre" on the river Elbe in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
On the photos you can see how these ferrys work; they are held by a long cable in the river, app. 2 to 2.5 times longer than the distance to cross - at the current low level the river was 110 metres wide. Two short cables are fixed on the long one, so that the angle of the ferry towards the river's current can be controled. You can see the difference in angle on the photos 'coming' and 'going'.
The invention of the Gierseilfähre is credited to Hendrik Heuck from Nimwegen in the Netherlands, 1657.
The ferry crosses at a speed of 2.5 to 3.5 km/h.
Although being a very small town Pretzsch has a nice castle - like some other small towns on the Elbe, e.g. Torgau.
This was #1 of 2 of my last locationless tour [:(!] - 275 km in 7 hours on a slippery but nice winter day...
Thank you for this Locationless! (my Locless #60 )
Best regards from Berlin - and a Happy New Year!

Where is the "CABLE" at a North Sea Ferry (Dagebüll to Wyk) ?
Or do you think "cable driven" is an older term form "drive by wire" ?
And where has the river Rhine with its heavy traffic a Cable Ferry?
Regards, Wolfgang

Die Zürichseefähre. Sie fährt ziemlich genau 7Min. um den See zu überqueren. Der Ankerplatz liegt in Horgen. Diese Bilder wurden allerdings auf der anderen Seite, in Meilen aufgenommen.
Found this one today with my Garmin. The ferry is servicing a little island here in Denmark every half an hour.
Bodininick ferry , Fowey in Cornwall, U.K.

The "Carlisle II" has been in service since 1917 as part of the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet and is currently transporting passengers between Bremerton, Washington and Port Orchard, Washington.
This ferry on the river Rhine in Germany connects the cities of Leimersheim and Leopoldshafen.
Imagine our glad surprise when on a journey through the Ozark mountains of Missouri we found that in order to continue on, we would have to take the ferry across! We had to ring a bell, and a man came to the ferry (on the other side of the river) and started manipulating the cable to pull the ferry to our side of the river. It looked so small, we were a little afraid that our minivan would sink it. But everything went smoothly - it was the highlight of our trip!
This punt is called Lexkseveer and is nearby Wageningen Holland. We were on our way to a other cache and we found this punt. I rememberd that i had seen a cache with it.
I took a lot of pictures just in case. People were strangly watching me.

Found during our summer holiday. The cyr ferry is a big one - see the pictures including the technical detaills.
Found a very small ferry across the bay from Exxon-Mobil in Texas. It only held about 16 vehicles, and it made a round trip every 10-15 minutes.
This punt (the "Coot") crosses the River Murray at Swan Reach. Couldn't get a picture with cars on it as it was coming back empty, sometimes it's nice not to have to queue.

Bac à traille from Seltz-Plittersdorf
N 48° 53.282 E 008° 08.010
Here is the last ferry on the Rhine between Basel and Rotterdam where the engine is the Rhine itself. In French: "bac à traille".
They are two parts of a floating bridge, each on a riverside and in the middle the 120 meters navigable channel will be cross by the ferry only by the craft of the streaming water.
There is a cable crossing above the Rhine maintained between two tower. On this cable runs a trolley with the cable which retains the ferry.
The driver of the Ferry, in Rhine-captain uniform, gets quickly the rudders in position so that the stream keeps the ferry in move.
He has to pile the right moment for crossing over because of the many barges on the Rhine which have the priority (a barge going down stream needs about 2 to 5 kilometres to stop)
The capacity of the ferry is about 8 cars.
Today the ferry was not in action because of repair and maintenance.
A little story : many years ago an army jet fly to low by high speed over the cable, so that the shock of the wave broke it. The ferry was without engine, free on the Rhine and could be recuperated 10 km down stream. By chance nobody was hurt. See also http://www.photo-alsace.com/thematique/activites/portuaire.php

Finding a punt is not difficult in the netherlands but most of them don't have clable across the canal, this one has.
It is a rare one because it is private, I had to pay one Euro for this thirty meters across the Noordhollandskanaal near the city of Den Helder in the very north west part of the Netherlands.

The punt is about 50 years old and is run as a family business. The punt is hauled across the Breede River by two or three puntmen by "walking" the punt across the river with drag chains attached to a steel cable that is suspended across the river. The punt can accomodate two vehicles at a time. Although the owners could use an outboard motor to power the punt they prefer to stay with the traditional method which is eco-friendly. The punt is located at Malagas in the Western Cape Province of South Africa about 200 kilometers from Cape Town. The cost of a river crossing is currently ZAR 25.00 (US$3.50)

Logged this one on a day of caching in Sydney. This is the Mortlake - Putney Punt across the Parramatta River.
This punt is 2 km West of Bedlam Point the location of one of the earliest punts in Sydney:
"In 1829 with the closure of the lunatic asylum at Bedlam Point, a punt/ferry service began to operate. The old sea wall from the ferry site is still clearly visible. The punt/ferry crossed from Bedlam Point to the Great North Road at Abbortford. Before the punt, there had been a ferry service for passengers but the introduction of the punt meant wheeled vehicles could cross the river as well.
Many roads converged to Bedlam Point to use the punt service because it provided a shorter route to Sydney that either going through Parramatta or crossing further up the river near the site of the present Ryde road bridges. The roads from the Hunter Valley and from Pittwater converged to use the punt which operated for more than 50 years until the Gladesville Bridge was opened in 1881."

This is a cable ferry the traverses the beautiful Kennebecasis River. From it you can see the Hampton marshes in the east and looking west you can almost see the city of Saint John. Forgein visitors have said that vista along this river are similar to those on the famous Rhine River? We know we enjoy its peacefulness and beauty. This ferry is know as the GOndola Point Ferry as one of the cable was attached to the hamlet of Gondola Point. The other end is attached to Kingston Pennisula. This particular ferry has it's bubble generating system which allows it to remain active even in the winter. Just be careful when ice skating.
This cable ferry crosses the Lower Arrow Lake, at Fauquier in the West Kootenays of British Columbia. It operates 24/7. It was built in North Vancouver, BC at the Vancouver Shipyards Co. Ltd. and became part of the Provincial Ferry Fleet in 1990. It is named "Needles" for the displaced town the waters of the lake covered when dams were built for hydro-power generation as part of the Columbia River Treaty was signed.
Found this one between Oka and Hudson in Quebec, Canada.
It is cable driven but by boat also.
I think it is the one and only boat pulled ferry in the entire country of Canada.

We found this very strange ferry in Portugalete. It crosses the Ria de Biboa between Portugalete and Las Arenas in Spain. Lovely there it was.
This is the auto ferry General Jubal Early, the only remaining ferry in operation on the Potomac River, and it operates 365 days a year between Maryland and Virginia. The ferry itself is named for a Civil War Confederate General. The coordinates listed are from the center of the Potomac River. The crossing location is Whites Ferry, Maryland. Please see the web link for additional information.

One of the many NB Canada ferries that ensure a pleasant, laid back look at life. My cousins in this province would never even consider building a bridge!
Good thing too, because there is definitely SOMETHING about cable ferries. I remember we use to ride these back and forth across the Saint John when I was a boy summering in Westfield. On our recent visit, we again made several crossings on these majestic river craft. This one traverses the Kennebecasis River from the Kingston Penninsula to "K" Island, formerly known as McCormacks....TFTC

This punt I stumbled over by chance, I didn't expect one here. But I was enroute from one cache to another and found that instead of a bridge there's a ferry on the shortest way between them. Turns out it's a punt. Location is east of Rovaniemi, Province of Lapland, Finland, Europe. The actual place is called Oikarainen, and that's also the name of the vessel. The river is called Kemi. By the way, when I arrived the ferry had just departed and was about 2 metres from the shore. But when they saw me, it reversed and picked me up. While I was boarding, another car arrived and managed to get on. So I had to take photos after arrival, no time before departure. The trip itself is so short that I was too busy taking the co-ordinates, so no time to get out and take a photo, esp. because I was alone (except for Ben-dog).
Historic Saugatuck Chain Ferry over the Kalamazoo River, Saugatuck, Michigan
We have a cache (Hula Girl) on our favorite, but it was already claimed. Don't you hate it when that happens... So we had to come all the way to Michigan to find another.
According to published information this is the only hand-cranked chain ferry left in the World. Saugatuck is quite the quaint village to visit to do a little shopping. Nearby was a cool independent music store and a spice store with very rare and expensive varieities. Come ride the ferry. They won't make you crank it or cranky...

The Klondike Ferry is one of only seven remaining ferries in Alberta. The ferry operates from April to October. An ice bridge serves as the crossing during the winter months.

After Purk logged the other punt on the Bersche Maas, I had to do this one. Was a real "Back to the Roots" experience, since I have lived here for over 15 years, quite some time ago.
My camera did like the place too much; after empty batteries, it failed to give me a sharp picture of the punt. Well the rest will tell some more.

The punt connects two country-roads near Zwingenberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany and crosses the river Neckar.
However, the days of this small punt are said to be soon over as the community decided to build with Governmental support a small bridge for some million EURO which is less expensive on the long run. Another part of history will soon be gone.

You have to take this ferry to get to GCKAEB. It crosses the Fraser River in B.C. My daughter and I had a great time with both the cache and the ferry. The ferry uses no power other than the river's current.
This ferry is situated in Denmark near the town of Skjern.
In fact there is two of them at this point. I have photographed the smaller one, which is hand operated.

I couldn’t resist trying to sneak this one by The 2 Dogs for purely historical documentation and maybe even a find if he/she/them let it stand. While waiting at the lift bridge, this location less cache jumped into my head. Too bad this wasn’t 10 years ago before modernization crept into even this remote part of Nova Scotia ( Cape Breton Island ) Canada. Some people call it progress, but I think not. The original ferry at this site was only the size of a small cable ferry, but due to the strong tidal current in the Barra Strait, it was propeller driven and ran from Grand Narrows to Iona. It was actually quite a ride due to the fact the little boat had to swing and power way out into the oncoming current in a large arch, to be then swept back down current and into the dock. The captain had to know his stuff back then. I grabbed a few pictures and continued on my way. Well, to my surprise, approx. 2km further on up the Saint Columbia Road at Plaster Cove, there it was, The Littlest Ferry! Floating majestically in Plaster Cove Ponds, flags a flying and crew on board. Just too good to pass by said I. Constructed by one of the former worker ( progress has its price ), it ride the waves in silent tribute to that progress or the lack there of, in this ever changing world. So to make a long story short, pictures I took to prove my story. Also drove back and recorded the remains of the docking structure on the Grand Narrows side of the Strait which is being turned into a marina to attract tourists ( N45 57.379 W60 47.561 ). I believe the original ferry here attracted more local people and tourists just for the ride. And to make this story even more amazing, I came across the Littlest Church you likely see in your travels. Had to include its picture.
This punt operates to the island of Soisalo in Vehmersalmi, Finland. It is the largest island in Finland (1 638 km²) and somewhere it is even named the largest inland island in Europe, but I haven´t been able to confirm that.

I was stucked in traffic in Montréal (going to my brother's place in Laval) and I decided to use a different route. I ended up on l'Ile Bizzare, which is right across my brother's place. Instead of a bridge, it is a ferry, a cable-ferry, that people use to cross the river there. What a coincidence... It is a locationless I wanted to do! SO I took the necessary pictures and here they are...

Found this cable ferry near Williamson, NC on the Cachie River. Skyboy01
We used this unique car ferry on a day out caching in the South West of England. Wasn't sure if it counted at first as it doesn't use cables but have checked other logs and have come across another one of these rare tug-driven car ferries. This one is the lower ferry from Dartmouth - Kingswear (the upper ferry is chain driven but has already been logged).
Many thanks,

Car ferry from Hattaras Island to Ocracoke Island on the outer banks of North Carolina.
Not sure if this will count since the GPSr in not in the correct picture. This is an afterthought, since I was actually on the ferry last year. There is a virtual cache in the middle of the ride--the cache is called HI to OI (OBX Ferry Cache). Please feel free to edit/erase this log if neccessary.

We watched this ferry go from Fort Ticonderoga,NY to Larrabees Point,VT on Lake Champlain many times while anchored nearby, before we started Geocaching It operates 8:00AM-5:45PM every day when the ice is off the lake, its about a 0.5 NM. crossing
I know that this one was already reported. But it was reported in winter while the ferry is closed. So here are some photography while on-board...

The log by Team Vertigo of May 31 is obviously a fake, and a rather primitive one, as are all their other Find logs.

I completed this cache on May 29, but am logging on June 22 because I could not find the listing.
This cable ferry is located near Country Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada, (pop. less than 1000; boasts one of the deepest natural harbours in North America) and runs between the tiny communities of Country Harbour Mines and Mount Misery. Caching buddy seashadow and I were the only passengers, and had a great chat with the ferry captains before and after the crossing.
There are three other cable ferries in Nova Scotia, all of which have previously been logged. The other ferries are very short crossings. This took about 15 minutes.
