As this cache has been out of action for too long, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Cache owner no longer caches and there is a string of DNFs here. Probably time to go to free up the spot.

As a previous finder I returned to check....as putting out 3 new caches here.
Thorough search....but no find

10-Nov-18
After a good search nothing could be found here today for us.We arent even 100 percent sure where the hint matched up to.

04-Aug-18
Another DNF of the morning, noted that other cachers said it was about 10 to 12m away, not sure in which direction but found some likely suspects but no luck for us.

I'm back in Auckland again, for one of my regular visits. On these occasions, Friday mornings usually finds me sitting with a coffee and my laptop, thinking about where I might drive to today to do a bit of caching.

Well no sooner than I'd powered the laptop up, I find an interesting post asking for help with a joint effort to grab a cache at Bastion Point. As it turns out, I'm not very far away from GZ so I jump in the car and zoom off to make the search. That was a the start of a bit of a mini-hunt for me this morning, as having found that one, and being in a part of Auckland I hadn't previously visited as a Geocacher, I wonder what other ones were around here?

This one was just down the road, so it was an easy park up and walk to GZ. I used the route suggested by the CO, and encountered the dogs, which was no problem. But arriving at the coordinates i wasn't able to see anything that fitted the hint. So a quick read of previous logs put me straight, after which it was a quick find. Signed the log and then everything was replaced exactly as found. Very clever little hide this one.

Thanks for placing this cache.

I came in via Thatcher St and even though the cache page warned me about the bloody dogs, I didn't think I would encounter them. But encounter them I did! One of the buggers tried in vain to jump the fence to get at me, almost succeeded too.. where's a 24,000 volt stun device when you want one. I don't mind dogs when you can freely pat them but dogs like this... so aggressive... (I don't give a stuff if they're protecting 'their' property) I'm quite happy to see them dead.

Anyway, wandered down to GZ and read previous logs about the cache co-ords being out 12m or so, so that is where I started searching.. 12m away from GZ. Took me awhile before I spotted something that looked like the hint and thankfully after all the slippin' and slidin' in my jandals I was able to sign in.

Now to face those dastardly dogs again!

Tonight was the night!!! We were 2 away from our 5000th cache. This cache close to a mystery cache nearby that we wanted to claim as out 5000th hide so attempted this one first. Took both of us a bit of searching but we noted from previous logs that the coordinates were approximately 10 meters out.

Eventually Mr NZT found an object that matched the hint and there was was cache YAY a very satisfying find as we did it in the dark. TFTC and now we are off to claim our 5000th.

Wish us luck!!

Found it after looking for only a minute the second time and well done with the hint.

29-Dec-17
Met up with Aiden and Merlot to do a few city caches on a hot Auckland afternoon. We enjoyed the shade of the bush as we headed to GZ. Couldn't locate anything to match the hint, so expanded our search area and Merlot found the cache approx 10m from GZ.

29-Dec-17
Out with merlot58 and Jag50 in the area. Had been in this park to complete the night cache previously, but nice to return in the daylight. We searched around GZ but couldn't locate anything that fit the hint. We extended our search area and found the hint location and the cache about 10 - 15m away from coords.

29-Dec-17
Heading home after an afternoon out with Jag50 and Aiden29. Arrived at GZ and looked around for the hint items, I spied something that could fit the bill about 10m away and sure enough, that's where the cache was

Couldn't find anything related to the hint so gave up after 10 mins but will be back

04-Dec-17
Enjoying the sun after work cleaning up some of the closer geocaches. TFTC

11-Nov-17
We have looked for this one several times at night while being in the area without any luck. Today however had a chance during day light and after a little bit of a look around saw a suitable place to match the hint. After several sweeps of the area spotted something to investigate further and cache found tucked away nicely. I now see why we had not found this one at night. TFTC.

Found with Bennett24. TFTC.

After a short hunt around GZ, spotted a likely spot and was filling out the log.

Where the GPS took me I couldn't find anything that matched the clue, but once I spotted the clue the cache soon followed.

05-Feb-17
Struggled with the GPS under the tress, but really only 1 place it could be if the hint was right. thanks.

07-Jan-17
Found lots of fantails but no caches.

24-Dec-16
Nice long walk back to the cache. Most amazing find was a small fish living in the very small stream about 50 meters from the cache. A bit of searching GZ, as the GPS was not cooperating under the canopy. Then what was that I saw. Cache soon in hand, log signed and everything nestled back in place. TFTC

After our daily cache and any old random cache will do. Kiwiscot & Scotty at the theatre seeing Billy Elliot leaving Kiwi to do the business. Neat little hidden bush area. Ran out of time to explore it further due to the time taken to finally unearth this hide. Perserverence won the day in the end. Found the (possible) hint location immediately but failed to unearth the hide. Followed the GPS round and round revisiting original location several times. After 45 or so minutes about to give up. One final look in the original spot and what do you know there it is. GPS had me about 10 metres away from gz. Trust your instints and search the most likely looking hint location thoroughly. TFTC

One of those caches where I've looked a few times and never found it, and then I rock up today and find it pretty much straight away in the place I'd always thought the most likely... I can only think it was possibly a bit more buried when I've looked before. #174

Nice to see someone has found it, I'll have to go back for another look now Smile

I know this area really well, running through here a lot. I believe that once upon a time there was a track up to St Johns Rd, but the pony club is in the way now. If you follow the track all the way around to the east you will end up at what looks like a grassy vehicle path, and at the top of that is a gate labelled private property / no trespassing. This is the start of the pony club. It's a shame, because it would be great to be able to walk all the way through, although eventually there's going to be a shared pathway from the GI side and then I think on the Purewa Cemetery side. Hopefully it joins up with Kepa Bush too.

came to explore this neat bit of bush.. having found it thanks to surveying geocaching.com map, ( great like that- shows alot of tracks that are not any where else) apparently it links up to st johns road - but not that we could find.. but we did find this on.. luckly the clue was nice and spercific.. as the gps wasnt... found this really unusual blackfern next to it too... wow... cache nice and dry.. camo worn from one side.

15-Aug-16
Had no joy looking for this one. Might try another day.

18-Jul-16
Couldn't find it. There were a couple of likely candidates based on the hint but didn't have any luck, and with the GPS moving around a bit, I was never quite sure if I was in the right spot. Will try again another time.

15-May-16
After 2 DNFs today, I was determined not to let this one get me. Thanks for the dog alert. I would've jumped out of my skin otherwise. Quite tricky locating GZ with phone GPS all over the show. Investigated a few distractions an came upon the place I was looking for. Then it was a fairly easy find PHEW! TFTC Random.

27-Apr-16
We tried for ages.. Got the GPS down to 0/1m and tried our hardest but to no avail. Will be back again!

29-Mar-16
Nice walkway through the bush, another place i've never visited before. Thanks. p.s. that guard dog is annoying.

TFTC!

Should have listened to the previous logs and worn insect repellant! Mozzies had a feast today! Had to abandon 1st search as a group of bird watchers whispered their way past us. 2nd attempt and R found the cache. Quick sign and we're off! Tftc!

19-Feb-16
In between running some errands today I decided to have a look for this hide. Parked up on Thatcher Street and made my way into the reserve. Had trouble spotting the hint item initially. Eventually found, but only gave it a gentle once over before expanding the search again. Revisited a second time and gave it a more careful search this time. Not careful enough as I missed it. Again wandered off to search elsewhere. In the end I had to conclude it could only be exactly there, especially given the hoard of mozzies flying around there. Third time was the charm as I finally came up with the goods. Don't think I got bitten, mozzies mustn't like me. Cheers for the cache placement!

19-Feb-16
GPS was a little bouncy but settled down once we spotted the hint items saying 7m with a 5m accuracy. Took a long time to spot as it was well covered but we were sure we were in the right area so persevered. Thankfully it paid off and another day of our streak is completed. TFTC Smile

Yay.....Third to find ! Lovely place for a cache ! Easy to find thanks . Congratulations on your first cache placement Random.Geocacher !
I added a lifelike fake worm !

A cache less than a km from home! Had to find! Entered from Colenso to avoid dog but still got an earful on approach. Bet its neighbors love it. Marvelled at butterflies at entrance. Give them swan plants and they will come. Watched compass until about 20m then paid more attention to matching visual to hint. While still on track got 5m then 7m which turned out to be pretty accurate. Stepped off track and compass reading shot up. Mr j searched while mrs waited for GPS to settle but before it did reached down and grabbed the prize. NINO TFTC

Tried very hard but signal failed us every time we got anywhere near, never mind try next we are in NZ we will try again.

24-Jan-16
I think beconaze has said it all. I have a lot of mozzie bites thanks to this one. Not nearly as easy as it made itself out to be, in part due to the dodgy GPS under the tree cover.

23-Jan-16
Got back from Rangitoto and a new cache was published so decided to head over and take a look. Arrived to find beconaze and onawe already searching so joined in. Took a while but we found it for a joint {FTF} after a while. FTF 1907 TFTC

Onawe had just turned up at our place to pick up her car from a few drinks the night before & we were languishing on the deck with the crazy heat. Heard the phone start tweeting and we ignored it as it was too hot to move to try and get it (phone was only about 1m away).....but after about 5 mins curiosity got the better of us...oooh look its just down the road. Dammit, now that we've looked we have to go

Arrived at GZ to be met by the noisy resident security force. We were stoked to find that as we descended into the bush that the temperature rapidly dropped off and we could search in comfort. We searched for a bit but were having no luck.

After a while FMZ and Slieschke turned up and after a brief chat we got to searching and expanded the search area which led to Slieschke making the find. Signed for a joint FTF then back to melting on the deck
